BP finally admits Gulf spill is a lot larger than it had claimed

According to BP, it is now siphoning off as many as 5,000 barrels of oil a day from the leaking pipe on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. That’s great news, since the company has been telling us that the leak itself was putting out 5,000 barrels a day. Problem solved, right BP?

Right?

Wrong.

The company has now been forced to acknowledge that outside scientists were right, that the leak is dumping a lot more than 5,000 barrels a day into the Gulf. How much more? The company won’t say, but thanks to pressure by Congress and the administration, you can see for yourself. The company has agreed to post a live video feed from the site, which can be seen here. It isnt’ pretty. (The site can be a little balky, probably because of heavy traffic.)

Meanwhile, fresh from arguing that the Civil Rights Act was an unconstitutional imposition on business, Rand Paul is now chastising President Obama for being too hard on BP. From the AP:

“What I don’t like from the president’s administration is this sort of, ‘I’ll put my boot heel on the throat of BP,’” Paul said in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “I think that sounds really unAmerican in his criticism of business.”

Other Republicans have criticized the administration’s handling of the oil spill, but few have been so vocal in defending BP, the company responsible for the deep well and offshore rig that exploded last month, killing 11 workers.

… Paul, a libertarian and tea party favorite, said he had heard nothing from BP indicating it wouldn’t pay for the spill that threatens devastating environmental damage along the Gulf of Mexico coast.

“And I think it’s part of this sort of blame-game society in the sense that it’s always got to be somebody’s fault instead of the fact that maybe sometimes accidents happen,” Paul said.

On Sunday, BP officials are scheduled to take their next shot at shutting down the leak. They hope to suffocate it with heavy mud, followed by a permanent seal of cement, a process known as a “top kill.” I’ve looked around, and I can’t find anybody willing to take an educated guess on their odds of success. But it’s pretty clear that Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and other officials are growing increasingly anxious about the oil now starting to come ashore.

The map below, from NOAA, demonstrates why. It shows the predicted spread of the spill through Sunday.

Again, it’s not pretty.

Spoken like a true libertarian. It only somebody’s fault if their poor. Bad things only happen to the rich by accident, and its nobody’s fault. Can’t wait to hear the blame placed on the fisherman and coastal tourism workers for being unemployed as a result of this spill, due to their “bad decisions”.

Accidents do happen. That drill accidentally started up on its own and accidentally made its way down to oil and… accidents did happen. So we need to feel sorry for BP, et al, and their long string of most unfortunate events. Accidents. Bad luck. That’s all it is. Just a lot of bad luck. We need some charity concerts or something to help raise some money for BP. Maybe we can get a few country singers to donate a song. Maybe some Dixie Chicks.

This accident is totally BP’s fault. They made bad decisions on safety and procedure operating the rig and it blew up. did any of you watch the interview of the guy who was on the rig when it blew up and jumped into the water to save himself? Also, 60 minutes, on the same show, interviewed an engineer who used to work for them and was fired for calling them out on safety violations. Rand Paul is an even bigger idiot than his father. Well, aside from Paul’s chiding Obama for his bashing of business, you and Rand are on the same page, jay.

YOU: And how this all ends, nobody knows. We humans have forgotten how frustrating it is to be largely helpless in the face of such a mess, particularly one of our own making. Thanks to modern technology, we have become accustomed to believe that for every problem there is a solution. Well, sometimes there just isn’t. Once in a while, we just really screw ourselves, and this is certainly one of those times.

RAND PAUL: “And I think it’s part of this sort of blame-game society in the sense that it’s always got to be somebody’s fault instead of the fact that maybe sometimes accidents happen,” Paul said.

Since you mentioned modern technology, I don’t know why this technology has been overlooked. I saw a demonstration on TeeWee. It was amazing!!! The trapped oil can be recycled too.

Oil spill, bad news and my thoughts and prayers are with those trying to fix the mess. The real cause of the accident remains unknown, all the news stories are likely hit and miss. Being from aviation, I know how they absolutely butcher the reporting when there is a crash or serious accident, so I dont’ expect their reporting on the oil spill to be any better.

As to Rand Paul, it’s progressive politics. The Democratic party sent out about 10 messages to new services trying to get them to whip up this story, obviously Jay received one and bought right in. I have listened to the Rand Paul interviews; he was dumb in letting them, the left, drag him into this subject. After all, they are supreme experts on playing the race or discrimination card when they have no other defense. He has stated he does not want to repeal the civil rights act, and that he supports all but he private business portions. If you think he is wrong about the private business portions, then you likely never have owned a small business.

Well, I’m sure glad you all are fussing about something besides the gays.

I can’t hardly help feeling a little sorry for BP. I mean, all this time people talked about how we need more oil and we need to drill here and drill now. The Southren guvners were the ones that were yelling the loudest about it. Now we got plenty of oil coming out and are these guvners happy? No, they’re whimpering like a kid that fell and scraped his knee. This Jindal looks like he’s going to break down and bawl just any time.

And then we got all the people that said the guvmint needs to get out of the way and let Free Innerprize work. So guvmint gets out of the way and the people working for it start sleeping with the oil co. employees and don’t do nothing to get in the way. And are the people that wanted guvmint to get out of the way happy now? No, they’re all yelling that guvmint ain’t doing enough and the oil is going to kill all the fish and birds and everything is going to be ruint because guvmint ain’t doing nothing.

Anyhow, it beats me. Danged if I can figure any of you out. But at least you know I’m almost finished stocking and you can set around and listen to your weird music tonight and soak your brain in alcohol.

Have a good p.m. everybody.

I don’t understand the post of “I report; you whine,” who wrote:

“Maybe it will wash up in Atlanta and you libs can have a giant hate America party?”

Is “report” actually saying that people must believe in “hating America” whenever they criticize a British-owned petroleum company for potentially wrecking the tourism industry of southern Mississippi and the fishing industry of Louisiana?

Is that what “America” is to you, Mr. Report? The right of a giant foreign-owned corporation to do billions of dollars in damage to the Gulf coast beaches and coastal wetlands of five or six states in the US, and not get any flack for it?

Also, when did it become “liberal” to think that American commercial fishermen and American resort owners & the natural environment should all be protected from gross environmental pollution on the part of the oil industry?

If you get angry at the oil industry sometimes and you don’t want it destroying the bayous of southern Louisiana, does that make you a “liberal”?

I’m a democratic socialist myself, not a liberal. But I think there are probably some conservative Republicans, too, who don’t approve of BP’s accident destroying the environment & the economy of southern Lousiana.

From American Solutions – A new study by Point Carbon shows that the Global Warming Bill authored by John Kerry (D-MA) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) amounts to a new gasoline tax on American motorists. As The Hill newspaper reports: Oil refiners would not participate in the trading system but would purchase allowances based on historic sales figures set aside each quarter. The companies would pass those costs on to consumers, resulting in the higher gas costs.

I don’t know a thing about the oil business and not a whole lot about the ocean but I’d think skimming would work great in calm water (theoretically anyway). 10 or 15 foot seas my change things, I would think. (Think something like the 25 foot seas you often see on Deadliest Catch).

UNITED NATIONS — The Obama administration on Friday lifted sanctions against four Russian entities involved in illicit weapons trade with Iran and Syria since 1999, and acknowledged exempting a Russian-Iranian missile deal from a U.N. draft resolution banning most missile sales to Iran.

The move comes just three days after the U.S., Russia and other key powers reached agreement on a draft resolution sanctioning Iran for violating U.N. demands to halt its uranium enrichment program. The draft includes a loophole that would exempt a 2005 Russian deal, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, to sell Tehran five S-300 surface-to-air missile systems.

The United States also lifted sanctions against D. Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology of Russia, which was sanctioned in 1999 for aiding Iran’s missile program, and Tula Instrument Design Bureau, which was sanctioned the same year for supplying anti-tank equipment to Syria. Since the beginning of the year, the Obama administration has also lifted sanctions against two other Russian firms, Glavkosmos and Baltic State Technical University, for their dealings with Iran.

Whose side is the Obama administration on, anyway?

Saw on Huffpo where some guys said using just hay can soak up oil. Likely a little easier to handle, this guy (sure he’s the owner of a business that makes the product, but so what?) was on the news showing how a plain old mattress pad soaks up oil. They dumped 3 quarts of motor oil into a wading pool, dropped the pad on it, pulled it off – and clear water. Said talking to the bureaucrats was an exercise in frustration. They’re focused on what – microorganisms that are green?

Guy needs to make a campaign contribution. Maybe then someone will listen. Other than a Republican Senatorial candidate from Nevada.

“And members of Congress released video from the company that showed much more oil pouring out of the damaged well than the siphon was capturing. Rep. Ed Markey, who leads a House subcommittee investigating the disaster, told reporters, “I think now we are beginning to understand that we cannot trust BP.”

“People do not trust the experts any longer,” said Markey, D-Massachusetts. “BP has lost all credibility. Now, the decisions will have to be made by others, because it is clear that they have been hiding the actual consequences of this spill.”

Not true, Representative Markey.

BP still has 5,000 barrels a day of credibility with the party first, anti-environment Republicans.

And I fully understand the poorly educated cons are incapable of understanding the interconnectedness of ecosystems, but good news for your side! Too bad for the Euro-weenie birds…

The damaging effects of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will be felt all the way to Europe and the Arctic, a top scientist told a congressional panel Friday.

“This is not just a regional issue for the wildlife,” said Carl Safina, the president of the Blue Ocean Institute. Safina, who recently returned from the Gulf Coast region, presented several photographs, including one of an oil-covered bird.

“There will be a nest empty in Newfoundland,” Safina said, noting common migratory patterns. Safina warned that multiple forms of marine life in the Atlantic Ocean “come into the Gulf to breed.”

Behold, for instance, major environmental groups’ attitude toward the Gulf oil spill.

We know that before the disaster, President Obama recklessly pushed to expand offshore drilling. We also know that his Interior Department gave British Petroleum’s rig a “categorical exclusion” from environmental scrutiny and, according to the New York Times, “gave permission to BP and dozens of other oil companies to drill in the Gulf without first getting required (environmental) permits.” Worse, we know that after the spill, the same Interior Department kept issuing “categorical exclusions” for new Gulf oil operations, and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar still refuses “to rule out continued use of categorical exclusions,” as the Denver Post reported (heckuva job, Kenny!).–San Francisco Chronicle

They’re gonna focus on Illinois…Chicago’s suburbs to be exact, while failing to process illegals sent to them from the border states?

In the midst of an outcry over illegal immigration and Arizona’s new crackdown, a top Department of Homeland Security official visiting Chicago on Wednesday said his agency intended to step up enforcement in places such as Illinois.

Echoing comments by President Barack Obama and others in the administration, Morton said that Arizona’s new law targeting illegal immigration is not “good government.” The law makes it a crime to be in the state illegally and requires police to check suspects for immigration paperwork.

Morton said his agency will not necessarily process illegal immigrants referred to them by Arizona officials.
