Nobody does Travelin’ Music better than the gypsies

When I saw that the Gipsy Kings were playing at Chastain tomorrow night, I knew what the Friday Night Travelin’ Music ™ would feature. I’ve never seen the Kings in person, but I’ve long admired their musicianship and passion. They’re true Romani, or gypsy, from Spain by way of France.

But if their current tour takes them by way of Arizona, they better keep their passports handy.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Gipsy Kings!

My own introduction to “Gypsy music”—Too bad I don’t have any recordings of it, but Great Aunt Julia played Gypsy violin and guitar..she learned when she went west with the family railroads, and, instead of staying in the family car at night, she would go out to where the railroad workers, many of them Kalo (Spanish-Mexican) Rom…not what you’d expect from a proper Victorian lady, but, man, could she play. One of my Uncle Ralph’s buddies was an Irish Gypsy (not a traveller, but a real Rom), Mr. Doug Burns, and as a wee tot I got to hear them play and pass the jug..

Read that Lou Reed is going to be doing three shows in London of his instrumental album Metal Machine Music

I was going to say “Go on, pull the other one…” but dayum, I looked it up. It ain’t no lie.

, Reed has been touring with his Metal Machine Trio – who play music inspired by the album – and they performed at the Royal Festival Hall on Monday before heading to Europe.

[...]

Metal Machine Music is regarded as Reed’s attempt to shun his fan base after the release of his fifth solo album, Sally Can’t Dance.

Thousands of copies were returned and his label RCA was forced to withdraw the record within months of its release.

The experience had a lasting impact on the label, as Reed pointed out: “The Metal Machine contracts meant that if a group was signed there was a thing in their contract saying, ‘I will not do anything like Metal Machine Music’.”

I just don’t know what to say about that.

Here is an actual review of the MMM concert.

http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/ether/2010/review-etherloureed.shtml

A couple of guitars lying against a rack of speakers seemed to be causing the drone that seemed to get louder and louder the longer you sat there and it just carried on… and on… and on… With nobody on the stage for a good 20 minutes admiring the setup was about all you could do while waiting. Talking over the top was a battle lost so staring expectantly took over. A gong, a drum, a few guitars and effects pedals, laptop, keyboard, sax, more pedals, a few more effects thingamys scattered the stage artistically placed clustered around 3 spots, hopefully soon to be filled by the trio.

The show is based on the 1975 Metal Machine Music album, which has NOTHING to do with Lou’s other output. Somewhere treading the line between genius and insanity, it devised critics at the time and still does.

After a good 20 mins, there was a little movement. Strolling out nonchalantly came 4 guys. Lou Reed, Ulrich Krieger, Sarth Calhoun and some bloke to move the furniture (instruments) and hand people guitars and stuff. Wow, it might finally begin! The wall of noise didn’t change dramatically, just seemed to get out of phase and bend and twist and growl in a very arty way. A bang on a gong here and there shook things up a little while Sarth dramatically hammered away on a pad morphing the sound somehow with seemingly little effect other than do look like he was doing something very important. That or he was playing ‘Running Game’ with the intention of getting new world record. At some point the guy banging the gong moved over to the sax and then over to the drum. It could have been very intentional in every detail, or it could have been completely random and I wouldn’t like to guess at which. Impressive, yes. Pretentious, very. Entertaining, not really.

In a move that was more covert until the Wall Street Journal uncovered it, the Arizona Department of Education has told schools that teachers with “heavy” or “ungrammatical” accents are no longer allowed to teach English classes.

As outlined by the Journal, Arizona’s recent pattern of discriminatory education policies is ironic — and is likely a function of No Child Left Behind funding requirements — given that the state spent a decade recruiting teachers for whom English was a second language.

Brings back an early childhood memory. The only time we couldn’t play in the yard was when the gypsies were passing through the rural community. They had a probably undeserved reputation of kidnapping small children, and whenever that motley collection of wagons, horses, and ponies came down that small rural road, we were called inside and ordered to stay until they were out of the area. To this day, I’m not sure they had any foreign roots, but gypsies they were to the southern West Virginia folks.

I was reading some of your comments on the earlier thread and I have three questions for you:

1) How did Obama pay for his education at Occidental and Columbia. Did he get foreign student loans (the records have been sealed). BTW, I am telling the world that I paid for my UGA education by working part-time and with VA benefits. Nothing to hide there.

2) How did Obama pay for his education at Harvard University (the records have been sealed).

3) He has admitted to traveling to countries as a young adult that did not at the time accept U.S. passports. Under what passport did he travel to those countries (the records have been sealed).

Maybe you could put some of the investigative reports at the AJC (if you have any left) on this?

Well, it’s as plain as the nose on your face. He had a passport from Kenya, which is where he was born. He ain’t a American and he ain’t a legal President. Only trouble is, if he gets throwed out of office, we get Biden as President. That’s sort of like getting Sister Dusty when Elin Woods gets throwed out of the strip club.

It’s safer to have a accident from time to time then continually get our oil from our enemies.

Off topic, but since I saw this comment after it was too late to comment on it, I couldn’t resist. When are people going to learn that there’s no such thing as “American” oil? All oil, regardless of country origin, goes on the international market for sale to the highest bidder. The companies selling it don’t give a tinker’s d**m about “national security.” All drilling in the Gulf does is further deplete our oil reserves. It does not automatically increase our own oil supply. It merely makes a little more oil available on the international market. BP—British Petroleum—get it?

Massachusetts Constitution:

Article II. It is the right as well as the duty of all men in society, publicly, and at stated seasons to worship the Supreme Being, the great Creator and Preserver of the universe. And no subject shall be hurt, molested, or restrained, in his person, liberty, or estate, for worshipping God in the manner and season most agreeable to the dictates of his own conscience; or for his religious profession or sentiments; provided he doth not disturb the public peace, or obstruct others in their religious worship.
