In a rather bizarre, rambling announcement speech last summer, Sarah Palin announced she was resigning her position as governor of Alaska after just two years in office. She was doing it, she said, for Alaska.
Rather than take “the quitter’s way out” of hunkering down and plodding through her duties, she said, she had decided to take another course, “to build UP this state and our country, and her industrious, generous, patriotic, free people!” She wouldn’t go with the flow, because “only dead fish ‘go with the flow’.”
In reality, as a new story in New York magazine documents, Palin did it for the money, and it lays out a pretty good case that the decision was the right one:
“The numbers are staggering. Over the past year, Palin has amassed a $12 million fortune and shows no sign of slowing down. Her memoir has so far sold more than 2.2 million copies, and Palin is planning a second book with HarperCollins. This January, she signed a three-year contributor deal with Fox News worth $1 million a year, according to people familiar with the deal. In March, Palin and Burnett sold her cable show to TLC for a reported $1 million per episode, of which Palin is said to take in about $250,000 for each of the eight installments.”
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with making money, and these days there’s no more American way to make money than to cash in on your celebrity, whether you acquired it by having eight children, playing golf better than anyone on the planet, sleeping with the guy who plays golf better than anyone on the planet or running for vice president.
Reading the “New York” piece, you get the sense that Palin probably won’t be making a serious bid for the presidency because in an odd way she has become bigger than all that. She is a brand, and the confines and demands of a presidential campaign wouldn’t allow Sarah to be Sarah.
“Running for president is no doubt part of her business model,” Gabriel Sherman writes. “But forget elections (as many Palin supporters already seem to have done); she’s already the president of an alternative America — and also its CEO.”

Wasn’t it the RNC who used the Palin kids to promote their “family values” and “She’s a REAL woman!” schtick? Why were they pulled out of school and trotted out in the spotlight? Especially the pregnant one? As a mom, I did not perceive that any of the RNC-driven publicity was in the best interest of those children. Of course it’s ugly and wrong to attack children!! Why were they dragged in front of the cameras? Their presence had nothing whatsoever to do with her ability (or inablity) to articulate knowledge of the issues pertinent to the election, unless they were positioned there as a deliberate distraction from the winking and vague, nonsensical anwers to legitimate questions.

Yes, I am aware that a candidate’s children show up for photos and stand behind mommy or daddy on big days. But the Palin children were subjected to much more than the usual “Oh, aren’t those cute children!” stuff, as I’m sure you remember. That the teen was preggers and unwed was something that should have been treated with some measure of modesty, IMO. Instead, they bought the boy a suit, told everyone they were getting married, and thrust them forward into the “SEE? We have family values!” circus. When any non-Repub dared to comment on THAT, the “You’re attacking the children!” screeching began. Sheesh. Mom should have said, “My daughter’s condition is a private matter. Why don’t you ask me another foreign policy question instead?”

Obama is the ULTIMATE case of branding in American Politics. He’s got a logo, he’s got slogans, he’s got people buying books, posters, stickers, t-shirts, videos and building little shrines to him in their homes. Apple should market themselves as well… and they do. He’s laid out the blueprint for modern politics going forward, and now the Dems are mortified to discover that the formula works for the other guys (or gal) as well.
I’ve said for months that Sarah Palin is the same as Obama; young, charismatic, photogenic and completely, utterly unburdened by experience or accomplishment. The fact that this is the state of politics today does not bode well for our republic.

Look, Sarah Palin’s role in the conservative movement is to help keep liberal pundits talking about her instead of anything relevant.
At the end of the day, the independents who decide elections do not make their choices based on what Sarah Palin or Al Gore say. They make their choice based on issues and policy. Conservatives have been crushing the left in the debate over issues and policy and are increasing their advantage.
The left should be spending its time making the case for the deeply unpopular health reform. Instead, Jay and the rest of the spokesmen for the left waste their breath griping about Sarah Palin. She is pretty much an irrelevant distraction, but apparently an extraordinarily effective one.

Some people “have it” and some people DO NOT. Sarah Palin was a young housewife with children. She was elected mayor of her hometown. People liked her. Then she was elected Goovernor of Alaska becasue THE PEOPLE LIKED HER. The Republican Party put her on their presidentialal ticket becaseu THEY LIKED HER. There is nothing illegal on her record. PEOPLE LIKE HER becaise she is very honest, ethical, moral and the kind of American most people like to see.
She writes a successful book and makes money. Lotsa money. Honestly! She makes speeches and makes money. Lotsa money. HONESTLY and without the help of dishonest politicians(Blogo,Ritzo), former terrorists (Ayers) and an anti-American minister (Wright). She has no crooked pals among her friends. She got where she is because SHE’S GOT THE ABILITY TO MOVE AHEAD.
If Bookman writes about her one more time I think I will bring up HIS BOOK etc. etc. If he has the right to smear Palin because she’s political, then why not smear a newspaperman with twisted facts and innuendoes. It is a sick act by Bookman with sick followers disgracing themselves. Let us hope this is the end of hate propaganda..

“On his TV show, early in the Clinton administration, Limbaugh put up a picture of Socks, the White House cat, and asked, “Did you know there’s a White House dog?” Then he put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton, who was 13 years old at the time and as far as I know had never done any harm to anyone. “

I skimmed thru the comments, so if someone else has made this point – apologies.
Do any of the Palin detractors remember why she quit her term?
Hmmmmmm?
That’s right – because of all the other Palin detractors who manipulated the state’s ethics system to try to cause her problems. And cause them they did. No matter the detractors knew they were filing false charges – there’s no penalty for that. No, one objective was to swamp her in the legal system and run up her bills. Which they did. How much was she in debt to the legal beagles when she left? Half a mill?
There’s a lesson in here (and maybe a bit of karma, too) about unintended consequences. Kinda funny, the very people who tried to force her into bankruptcy instead impelled her on a course that made her a millionaire.
I love irony.

I’ll have to remember to wish you a happy mother’s day, then. I am not being snippy when I use the word. Why would I be snippy? Being preggers is no picnic — it’s tough, no matter who you are!! I was appalled at the many ways in which both those teens were both maligned and used. My initial point in this discussion was that I faulted the parents and the RNC for dragging them out into the spotlight where so many others saw them as fair game for cheap shots. To fault one “side” and excuse the other, IMO, is hypocritical.

It is scary that people are dumb enough to pay to read what this idiot has written, or hear her talk, or watch her on tv. And if someone leaves one elected position for another, or in this case, to make her millions, they need to be barred from running again for say 10 years. If you are “bigger” than the office you were elected to, or aspire to, then perhaps you are too little to represent us.

Jewcowboy,
If this thread has become quite lame (and there is a new dull thread) it is not because of Palin. It is the pernicious production of pure hate here by most liberals. They never heard the term “good sport” or fair evaluation or even good manners. Now that is not “lame”. It is crippled.

Just how will Sarah be able to WORK after this windfall? 1/2 term at best . . . if she were able to be elected. (I hope she runs.)

“Palin has amassed a $12 million fortune”
Earnings does not equal net worth so while she has done well she has probably “amassed” less than half of that after taxes and all. Liberals and journalists always seem to confuse earnings with ‘”fortune”,
and good for her.

“He was forced to pay b/c he disagreed with the amount. I have to be honest, at $1,800 a month for one child, I would be questioning that too.”
Evidently, you are ignorant of the child support laws in Georgia too.

“It’s sort of like Palin herself…starts out with vigor, then just kind of peters out…”
Yes, one always appreciates a “vigorous” debate about Levi Johnston. LOL

“Perhaps…just like this:
“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because …
or,
“On his TV show, early in the Clinton administration….”
Thanks for providing such an excellent demonstration of how partisanship has warped your sense of reason. You are excusing your nasty attacks on Bristol Palin by quoting equally ugly attacks from hateful conservatives.
What is your point? That you are as hateful and crude as Rush Limbaugh. Whoopee.
How about being responsibile for your own civliity instead of using the incivilty of media figures as your justification?
How about just acknowledging that attacking teenage girls is pathetic and so is anyone who does so?
The quotes that you cite from McCain and Limbaugh are mindless and hateful. So are yours. So how intellectual honesty works?

Much agreed with what you say…this is more the Matilda I have grown to respect and admire…sorry if I stepped on toes…it was a reaction and we always live to regret those…and, FYI, women will always have the trump card when it comes to giving birth…not something I think most men (self included) would care to go through…but, then, y’all should’ve left that apple alone!

I guess by jewcowboy’s logic, I can make any kind of hateful comment I want and be justified as long as somebody I never met who also happens to be a liberal made a similar comment.
Makes sense to me. Very progressive sentiment.

Well don’t forget how much richer Al Gore has gotten since he left office and got into the fear-peddling business. He also was a far harsher critic of Bush than Palin has been of Obama. Let’s not forget Al’s wacky shouting of “They lied to us!!! They played on our fears!!!”
It is the height of irony that the same people who demonize Palin worship Al Gore. Palin is a piker at the partisan, money-making ex-pol. Shoot, Gore won a Nobel and an Oscar for his version of Palin’s schtick.
