NOTE: Two updates below:
I wonder whether this will finally be enough to force the Republicans to dump their embarrassment of a party chairman.
The Daily Caller writes about Michael Steele’s free-wheeling ways with party money, focusing on his use of private jets to ferry him about the country and his rather hefty hotel bills.
“According to federal disclosure records, the RNC spent $17,514 on private aircraft in the month of February alone (as well as $12,691 on limousines during the same period). There are no readily identifiable private plane expenses for Democratic National Committee chairman Tim Kaine in the DNC’s last three months of filings.
The RNC explains that Steele charters jets only when commercial service is unavailable, or when his tight schedule requires it. “Anytime the chairman has taken any private travel has been a either to a route that doesn’t exist or because of connections and multiple travel to where he just wasn’t able to do so,” Heye said. Yet Steele’s office repeatedly refused to explain in specific terms the circumstances of the February charter flights.
Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,620.71 spent [update: the amount is actually $1,946.25] at Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex.”
An RNC chairman blowing two grand at a bondage-themed Hollywood nightspot featuring topless lesbian acts? In journalism, putting that sentence so far down in your story is called burying your lede. Sure, it’s only two thousand dollars, but it’s the kind of expenditure that can crystallize the discontent felt by many top Republicans about Steele.
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. Personally, I’m surprised Steele has managed to survive as long as he has.
Here’s how a review from Clubplanet.com describes the place:
“In Los Angeles, it takes a lot to shock and awe. When you walk into Voyeur on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, you might not be completely shocked at the almost naked women writhing on each other but you will undoubtedly be in awe.
Voyeur is an intimate space, provocative and sexy, sophisticated and interesting. Inspired by Eyes Wide Shut and London lounge, Annabelle’s of London, Voyeur transports you to a world of risqué sexuality and eroticism. In fact, even if you tried to escape looking at the naked women all around you, you would ultimately fail. But then again, why would you even try?
Of course the guests are sexy, but the walls are also lined with black and white pictures of beautiful naked girls from decades past while temptresses wearing nothing more than pasties and a black thong “stretch” on tables or in large glass boxes. Yes, the women don’t strip or show off their outdone go-go girl dance moves. Instead, they hold onto ropes on the walls and literally stretch, like yoga class but much sexier (and probably more naked).”
UPDATE:
“The RNC said in a statement Monday morning that it was investigating the Voyeur West Hollywood expenditure, which it said was “a reimbursement made to a non-committee staffer.” The committee also said it was requesting that the money be returned and emphasized that Steele was not at the event.
“The chairman was never at the location in question, he had no knowledge of the expenditure, nor does he find the use of committee funds at such a location at all acceptable,” the RNC statement said.”
For Steele personally, that distancing is no doubt useful. For Steele as chairman of the RNC, I’m not sure it’s going to help him much.
UPDATE II:
Washington (CNN) – A California-based political consultant who charged the Republican National Committee nearly $2,000 for a night out at Voyeur – a risque West Hollywood nightclub now at center of the latest controversy surrounding RNC chairman Michael Steele – will return the money to the party, a committee spokesman told CNN Monday.
Erik Brown, president of the Orange County-based Dynamic Marketing, Inc., was re-imbursed in February for $1,946.25 worth of charges at the nightclub, according to the RNC’s latest filing with the Federal Election Commission.
It’s not clear why the RNC re-imbursed Brown for the charges or who else was with him at the club. A spokesman for the RNC said Steele was not at the club when the charges were made.

There’s been quite a push on the census down here. Some have talked about privacy, etc. The counter to that in the media is how some estimates said that over the last few years the state lost about a billion in funding. Plus it looks like the state will pick up 3 or 4 seats in the House.

It appears that Jay may have prematurely jumped on a story
It appears that the story is about more than just a salacious expense item; from the linked WaPo piece in Jay’s update:
The RNC had more than $22 million on hand when Steele arrived last year, but is down to under $10 million now despite raising $96 million during that time, records show.

RB from Gwinnett,
“That’s some real fine “journalism” Jay. I see you corrected a portion of your post from above, but it would appear a retraction of the whole thing is in order. This is if accuracy in reporting matters to you any more.”
Why should it be retracted? It is in on Steele’s expense reports submitted to the FEC. The Republican National Committee chairman is down for paying $2K for “fund raising” efforts at a sex club. This is not in dispute. When I submit an expense report to my organization, I am on the hook personally and professionally for everything contained therein. If there was an expense for the Cheetah or Swinging Richards you better believe I would be called to the carpet for it.
I would hope the chairman of one the national political parties would be held to the same standard.

Hate crimes force Jews out of Malmo
Anti-Semitic threats come from Muslim community
Marcus Eilenberg is a Swedish Jew whose family roots in Malmo run deep. His paternal grandparents were Holocaust survivors who found shelter in this southern Swedish city in 1945. His wife’s parents fled to Sweden from communist Poland in the 1960s.
Now the 32-year-old law firm associate feels the welcome for Jews is running out, and he is moving to Israel with his wife and two children in May. He says he knows at least 15 other Jews who are leaving for a similar reason.
That reason, he says, is a rise in hate crimes against Jews in Malmo, and a sense that local authorities have little desire to deal with a problem that has exposed a crack in Sweden’s image as a bastion of tolerance and a haven for distressed ethnic groups.
Anti-Semitic crimes in Europe have usually been associated with the far right, but Shneur Kesselman, an Orthodox rabbi, says the threat now comes from Muslims.

Anyway, I do have a few questions;
- Does anyone besides me see it as a backhanded slap at Israel by Obowo that he essentially showed Netanyahu the door the other day, then flew to Afghanistan for Passover?
- Why did America’s Jews vote overwhelmingly for Obowo in ‘08, all the time clamoring for more support for Israel, where Obowo’s latest poll shows he has a 4% favor-ability rating over there? Yes, I said 4 %.
- Where have all these new name bloggers come from, or are you all just changing names?

RB from Gwinnett,
Sorry for the lag in responding…Photoshop and Vista are having a power struggle on my desktop.
“this stuff wasn’t on Steele’s expense report.”
I did read it several times along with a story posted earlier from another site, was getting the two confused. In the story Jay posted, “Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style” this is line is most contentious. I assumed it meant it was his personal expenses, though if I had been paying attention closer the word “suggests” should have been a clue that it was RNC expenses and not necessarily tied to Steele. Whether by deception or inaccuracy, I misinterpreted what was written.
“It’s a lie.”
No, it is not a lie…just not succinctly written as it should have been. The trouble with not reading closely…but it does not warrant retraction…but, perhaps, a correction since the story is correct, just written so as to inspire some confusion. As Jay has done.
I will take the chairman at his word that he was not there. And until any such evidence comes to light he was there or personally approved the expense, he is probably owed an apology for (un)intentional maligning his character.
But it does beg the question; who approves these expenses? How did a $2K sex club reimbursement get approved? How does The RNC amass $46K (if not more) in luxury travel expenses in the month of February and how does this correlate with the party of financial conservation? Are these types of expenses ok with Republican donors?

“Likely the same reason they ALWAYS vote against Republicans.”
Most “Jews” in America are Jew in name only. They attend the parties etc.. but when it comes time for Temple……nowhere to be found. Most Jews don’t even know Hebrew let alone their heritage.
“but as one I presume it is that they do not trust deadly right wing zealots and the hijackers of Christianity…”
You mean the ones that fought against Hitler and helped rebuild Israel as a country? Israel overwhelmingly loves the GOP. Why, because they know the GOP doesn’t want to see them destroyed.

I’m not a Republican and I don’t give either party any money (taxes not included), so I guess it’s probably none of my business. It does stick in my craw however, to see anybody flailing an expense account like that, when they’re telling me to suck it up and tighten my belt. That applies equally to both parties.

Same feudalism, they just let people get stoned long enough to not notice what’s going on. Ross
Perot was right, but what he didn’t tell you is that he wanted government out of the way so HE could enslave you and not have to share.

Jay, no politician or political party can claim the MORAL high ground in this country. Most of us who haven’t totally sold out our minds to any political party (unlike yourself who long ago forfeited your journalistic and maybe even your personnal integrity to support the liberal/progressive cause) are not surprised by what any politician does. I don’t even think the current republican party even tries to go for the religious thing anymore. How can they and really, when it comes down to it, who even cares? Liberal lackeys in the press such as yourself continue to try and portray every conservative in this country as some kind of “holier than thou art” religious zealot just waiting to be caught with their pants down. And because of a few bad apples, it is a convenient sore that you can pick at again and again meanwhile ignoring anything the democrats do. If the republicans are as bad as this can you imagine what the democrats must do on their “retreats”? I have a mental picture of Pelosi, dressed in bondage attire (her with her skinny thighs and with her bulbous eyes bulging) riding a subserviant Reid (who is dressed as an ass, the democratic mascot) around a big ball room beating him with a riding crop while screaming “I am omni-potent!”. All of this with the musical backdrop of the big band classic Sing, Sing, Sing! playing on high volume through the amplifiers. Meanwhile, at the head of the room, Obama sits on a big throne while Chris Matthews massages his feet and Katy Couric (dressed in arabic harem clothing) feeds him grapes all the while cooing to him, “you are our saviour who absolves us of all of our white sin”.
OK, that last is a bit much. But you get my drift. Anyone that thinks anybody up in Washington or in politics in general is not capable of deplorable moral behaviour, then you are indeed a programmed idiot. By far, the most deplorable behaviour being demonstrated in this country today is by the media. They are far too culpable in their unquestioning support of Obama. They dare not question him on anything he does and in the process, they are selling out the country and they are destroying themselves in our eyes. “The Third Branch” has actually turned into exactly that for this president. It will take a long time to undo the destruction he, and they, have done.

jefferson said, “I think Palin would be a most excellent replacement, her cheers are better than his cheers.”
Yes, sure. That move would light up the blogosphere. Now, that would be just the type of repeal and replace Republicans are capable of doing.

John Edwards was defeated for his Senatorial bid in NC; he was divorced by his wife and has no position of authority in the Dem party. How can one draw a moral equivalence between John Edwards and Michael Steele?

John Edwards was running for president when that all went down. He could have been president or vice president. Michael Steele didn’t cheat on his cancer stricken wife. Edwards did.

Libertarians were almost a non-entity, right up there with the Socialist Party and the Green Party, until around 2006 when the Republicans were tanking. Now Republicans are so embarrassed to call themselves Republicans, they resort to calling themselves Libertarian.
