We went to see Jeff Bridges in the movie “Crazy Heart” a few weeks ago, and it was excellent. And all the time I was watching it, I was thinking of the late Townes Van Zandt. The Bridges’ character, known as Bad Blake, had a lot of Townes in him, as did his music.
But of course, since this was Hollywood, Bad Blake by the end became Good Blake and survived his sins and excesses. Townes did not.
The truth is, Townes was a great picker and songwriter but not that great a singer. At best he could often make a virtue of his limitations. So here’s an interesting version of his most famous song, performed by a couple of other pickers who also reap virtue from their limitations.

Well, I’m afraid you’ll just have to get used to it as there are rude, crass, disrespectful people on both sides. Free speech is not always pretty but it is protected. Even Jesus called the religious rulers of His day ……….. vipers ! Sometimes the truth hurts.
BTW, conservatives have dealt with that type of rudeness from the liberal side for at least since the hyppie dyppie days …………….. Personally, I like to see civil debate but strong satire and hyperbole is fair game and I will continue to use it verbally (just like Luckovich does with his cartoons).

“The United States Senate has the responsibility to approve or disapprove of my nominees. But if, in the interest of scoring political points, Republicans in the Senate refuse to exercise that responsibility, I must act in the interest of the American people and exercise my authority to fill these positions on an interim basis,” Obama said in a statement.
“Most of the men and women whose appointments I am announcing today were approved by Senate committees months ago, yet still await a vote of the Senate. At a time of economic emergency, two top appointees to the Department of Treasury have been held up for nearly six months. I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government.”
Good show. It is way past time to start putting the Republican obstructionists in their proper place — at the children’s table.

In the early 1970s, President Richard Nixon favored a mandate that employers provide insurance. In the 1990s, the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, embraced an individual requirement. Not anymore
What is this! Even the Heritage Foundation wanted a mandate requiring individuals to have health insurance. The fainting couch is going to need a lot of pillows for this one. The shock. The awe. The horror of it all!

Repubs are not examples of profiles in political courage.
They obstruct and cause more harm to the country than is imagined because they know they have support from their constituents.
How many believe Senators DeMint (R-SC) or Coburn (R-OK) are stellar examples of American values?
Sadly, the above examples are just two of the many Senators with the same affliction.

Perhaps that explains why the Administration is now so touchy. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke took to the White House blog to write that while ObamaCare is great for business, “In the last few days, though, we have seen a couple of companies imply that reform will raise costs for them.” In a Thursday interview on CNBC, Mr. Locke said “for them to come out, I think is premature and irresponsible.”
Look dude, this is pretty simple to understand, you are a communist wanna be that has never run a successful business in your entire career, and the people that have run businesses laugh in your face and write their profits by the Billions.
So, the question remains, are you socialists deeply stupid people or are you purposefully trying to destroy the United States?

“This reform of the federal student loan programs will save taxpayers $68 billion over the next decade,” Obama said in his weekly Internet and radio address Saturday. “And with this legislation, we’re putting that money to use achieving a goal I set for America: By the end of this decade, we will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world.”
So much for those prospects of increasing the Republican/conservative base. Another GOP dream trickled down the drain. The GOP will have to be content with tea partiers as their loyal base. Grumpy Old Poohs… salty dawgs.

As we’ve discussed before, it’s not for us to judge each other. We all have a tendency to lean that way sometimes but we have no say in who goes and who don’t, only ourselves. And when each person stands in judgement, money, fame, whatever, none of that stuff can help and nobody else can either. I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying, “You can’t pray nobody into Heaven”. I don’t doubt what you’re saying but I’ve known some very accomplished liars. I live in a small community, so I know all the people who’ve spent time in the state and federal pen. Some of them can lie like you wouldn’t believe. I also knew a man who spent a lot of time off and on in mental hospitals. I also knew a nurse at one of the places where he was. She said anytime he decided he wanted to go home, it was like flipping a switch and he could convince any professional in the place of anything he wanted them to believe. She said when he decided he wanted out, he’d be out in a week’s time.

And the beat goes on…
March 26 (Bloomberg) — JPMorgan Chase & Co., Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and UBS AG were among more than a dozen Wall Street firms involved in a conspiracy to pay below-market interest rates to U.S. state and local governments on investments, according to documents filed in a U.S. Justice Department criminal antitrust case.
A government list of previously unidentified “co- conspirators” contains more than two dozen bankers at firms also including Bank of America Corp., Bear Stearns Cos., Societe Generale, two of General Electric Co.’s financial businesses and Salomon Smith Barney, the former unit of Citigroup Inc., according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on March 24.
The papers were filed by attorneys for a former employee of CDR Financial Products Inc., an advisory firm indicted in October. The attorneys, as part of their legal filing, identified the roster as being provided by the government. The document is labeled “list of co-conspirators.”
None of the firms or individuals named on the list has been charged with wrongdoing. The court records mark the first time these companies have been identified as co-conspirators. They provide the broadest look yet at alleged collusion in the $2.8 trillion municipal securities market that the government says delivered profits to Wall Street at taxpayers’ expense.

To those of you who work in law enforcement, could the people in AmVet’s 10:27 be prosecuted under RICO?

I hear ya loud and clear, SoCo.
But the tiniest ray of hope, form that same article:
Banks may choose to cooperate with prosecutors because in light of the government bailout funds they’ve received “a guilty plea would just be an absolute disaster for some of these companies,” said Nathan Muyskens, a partner at Shook, Hardy & Bacon in Washington and former trial attorney with the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition.
“There have been antitrust investigations where there have been companies involved that were just never indicted,” he said in a phone interview.
At the same time, the government will probably focus on seeking to convict individual bankers, he said.
“When someone goes to jail for five years, that resonates,” he said. “When a company pays $200 million, it’s simply a balance sheet issue. Jail time is what captures corporate America’s attention.”
Great songs about varmints in the road, josef.

Hey! Doubt Jay will open up on illegal settlements in the American Southwest, he’s more concerned with the ones on the West Bank…and, well, those two memos might be in conflict, eh?

The banks may choose to cooperate. Nothing says they will. Even if they do, I’m willing to bet they will throw some bottom-of-the-totem-pole schmuck out to placate investigators. I seriously doubt any of the major players will even break a sweat. I hope I’m wrong, but you’re talking about a government that can’t even decide how or when to try people that want to kill us all.
