The smoothest ride I ever had on a street bike was on a 1976 Suzuki RE-5. Nowadays, I just look at my dust-covered Honda and think about repairing it whenever I get the urge for a ride.

1982 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim, used to ride it all through the roads of the forest preserves in Illinois, averaged about 13,000 miles a year, first time out in the Atl nearly got decapitated by some errant minivan.
Haven’t rode it since.

Jay, my KAW ultimately gave me pain but boy what fun I had getting it! That’s why motorbikes are for young people. They don’t know how badly they have been injured and they heal quickly! Of course, everything that comes around goes around. I know from personal experience.

But I do remember running wide open on 10-mile straightaways in the Nevada desert wearing just a helmet, a pair of ’80s short shorts (!!!) and boots. You feel very vulnerable, which was part of the point.

At 13 he told his parents he was staying with his cousin in Atlanta. He wasn’t. He was driving a motorcycle down to Daytona. Down there a whole week, drinking and driving….his parents were none the wiser. He’s owned bikes ever since.
His passions are bikes, poker and me. Not sure about the order but it could be just as I typed it. Poker is definitely first on the list.

Seriously off topic. And long. But I was laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe and tears were streaming down my face. Seemed good for Friday night. Plus, when I finished reading this I thought “Dang, Rebecca and Bill post on Jay’s blog!”
Here’s a prime example of “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus” offered by an English professor from the University of Colorado for an actual class assignment:
The professor told his class one day: “Today we will experiment with a new
form called the tandem story. The process is simple. Each person will pair
off with the person sitting to his or her immediate right.
As homework tonight, one of you will write the first paragraph of a short
story. You will e-mail your partner that paragraph and send another copy to
me. The partner will read the first paragraph and then add another paragraph
to the story and send it back, also sending another copy to me. The first
person will then add a third paragraph, and so on back-and-forth.
Remember to re-read what has been written each time in order to keep the
story coherent. There is to be absolutely NO talking outside of the e-mails
and anything you wish to say must be written in the e-mail. The story is

At first, Laurie couldn’t decide which kind of tea she wanted. The
chamomile, which used to be her favorite for lazy evenings at home, now
reminded her too much of Carl, who once said, in happier times, that he
liked chamomile. But she felt she must now, at all costs, keep her mind off
Carl. His possessiveness was suffocating, and if she thought about him too
much her asthma started acting up again. So chamomile was out of the
question.

Meanwhile, Advance Sergeant Carl Harris, leader of the attack squadron now
in orbit over Skylon 4, had more important things to think about than the
neuroses of an air-headed asthmatic bimbo named Laurie with whom he had

said into his transgalactic communicator. ” Polar orbit established. No sign
of resistance so far…” But before he could sign off a bluish particle beam
flashed out of nowhere and blasted a hole through his ship’s cargo bay. The
jolt from the direct hit sent him flying out of his seat and across the
cockpit.

one morning. The news simultaneously excited her and bored her. She stared
out the window, dreaming of her youth, when the days had passed unhurriedly
and carefree, with no newspaper to read, no television to distract her from
her sense of innocent wonder at all the beautiful things around her. “Why
must one lose one’s innocence to become a woman?” she pondered wistfully.

destroy the human race. Within two hours after the passage of the treaty the
Anu’udrian ships were on course for Earth, carrying enough firepower to
pulverize the entire planet. With no one to stop them, they swiftly
initiated their diabolical plan. The lithium fusion missile entered the
atmosphere unimpeded. The President, in his top-secret mobile submarine
headquarters on the ocean floor off the coast of Guam , felt the
inconceivably massive explosion, which vaporized poor, stupid Laurie.

Reminds me of a friend of mine who wrecked his brother’s Vette. Saw him a few days later and he didn’t have any serious injuries but he was moving kind of slow and his face was all bruised and skint up. After he walked off, one of the guys said, “Well, he was lucky; he could’ve been hurt a lot worse”. Another guy laughs and says, “Oh, he came out of the wreck without a scratch, his brother is the one that hurt him”.
And speaking of Easy Rider, seeing it today, it really was a stupid movie. “Born To Be Wild” was the best thing about it.

My dad was a bootlegger. Long story, but I’ve seen a few real stills. He had an old Buick Wildcat that was souped up and must have been putting out about 500 horsepower. He didn’t run moonshine, but hauled illegal liquor across state lines.
When the city decided to put legal liquor to a vote (the town had been dry), Mom was a serious church lady, so finally, they both fought against legalizing liquor. I think that is the only thing they ever agreed on.

Back in the 30’s and 40’s, there wasn’t much traffic on the roads, especially at night. If it was on Highway 9, it was either a trip car or a revenuer. They mainly used late 30’s or 40 Ford coupes. They’d take out all the seats except the driver’s seat, stack wooden boxes full of liquor in Mason jars up to the bottom of the windows and head for Atlanta. As soon as they left it was wide open all the way down, they knew if they saw another car it was likely the Revenue. They did have some alternate routes they took from time to time but basically it was no finesse, just speed against speed. The goal was to leave after dark, get to Atlanta, get unloaded, get paid, and be back in the hills before daylight. You’d get about $30 a load for hauling in those days and the average pay in the area in those days was about a $1 a day.

Back in NJ, I went to the local DMV to buy new plates for my f@ggy little Vespa scooter. I walked with them down the block, around the corner, to where the bike was parked–as it turned out, next to a coupla Harleys. Whose owners were also coming ’round the bend with their new tags.
Naturally we got to talking a bit. They were nice enough–local guys, weekend warriors, lived to ride/ride to live guys, wearing leather but not gang colors. But they were smirking a bit at my f@ggy little bike.
I asked them where they’d taken their rides. “Down the shore, you know, upstate a bit.”
They asked me where I’d taken mine. “Oh, down to DC, over the Bay Bridge, tooled around the Chesapeake a bit that one time.”
Their collective looks were priceless. Their gasping, “you took THAT… down THERE?”
Anyway, we both walked away with a bit of mutual respect; I’d pretty much hated Harley guys up to that point, and these guys were all right.

The big question: Was Desiree Rogers pushed, prodded or pointed to the exit door at the White House?
Answer: Yes.
“She is loved by the Obamas and part of the Chicago White House gang, but it became apparent Desiree was totally in over her head in her role as White House social secretary,” a top Dem source said.
“Desiree was under-prepared and broke the cardinal rules of the job: Keep your head down, work your ass off and do not permit the camera to focus on you,” added the source, who is familiar with the inner workings of the White House.
“She was the wrong pick in the first place,” the source said.
So was her boss Obama.

“Sign up for the new Geico credit card,” Buffett wrote in his 2005 investor letter. “It’s the one I now use.”
But it soon became apparent that people significantly less well off than Buffett were among the leading users of the Geico card.
The card business eventually ran up $6.3 million in pretax losses before Buffett pulled the plug. Berkshire then sold its credit card receivables for 55 cents on the dollar, resulting in additional losses, Buffett wrote.
All told, Buffett’s credit card caper cost the company $50 million.
