So who was right?
The congressional Republicans, who have gone around the country claiming that the stimulus bill has created no new jobs and stimulated no new economic growth, or the congressional Republicans, who have gone around their home states and districts bragging that stimulus projects would create a lot of new jobs?
Well, The Congressional Budget Office has looked into the question, and it turns out that the Republicans were right! The stimulus bill has indeed produced a lot of new jobs and increased economic activity.
According to the report:
In sum, CBO estimates that in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2009, ARRA’s policies:
– Raised real GDP by between 1.5 percent and 3.5 percent;
– Lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.5 percentage points and 1.1 percentage points;
– Increased the number of people employed by between 1.0 million and 2.1 million;
– Increased the number of full-time-equivalent jobs by 1.4 million to 3.0 million compared with what those amounts would have been otherwise.
The CBO also estimates that the biggest impact of the stimulus is yet to come. It predicts that job growth produced by the stimulus will cut the unemployment rate by 1.9 percentage points for the rest of the year, boost GDP by as much as 4.5 percent in the second quarter of this year and increase the number of people employed by as much as 3.3 million people.
By the way, CBO also compared the stimulus effect of various aspects of the legislation. Direct spending by state and federal governments had the biggest effect, producing four to five times as much beneficial impact as tax cuts to higher income taxpayers.
Just in case you were wondering.

“What can we do? Spend and buy American”
Careful with that one as the “foreign” products are sold by companies that are owned and employ many, many Americans. Would love to see it, but won’t work in actuality as cheap labor allows for cheap products which we all demand.
And for those that say make it here with the higher labor – its a cycle – labor goes up, cost of goods goes up – cost of goods goes up, demand goes down – demand goes down, people lose their jobs.
Sound familiar?

“I get that you fear obama and all but he can be defeated by the ballot, the way its always been done if that is what the majority wants. Government is we the people, why should you fear that?”
Mick–In some ways, you’re right. Obama won’t be in office forever, and hopefully any damage he does can be undone if it is the people’s will. At the same time, what Obama is pushing for is a huge step in the wrong direction. I don’t want a “guaranteed” life–I’d rather choose my own life and either enjoy or suffer the consequences. And as I linked above, that “guaranteed life” that you keep calling for comes with a huge price tag, as witnessed by the income differential between the US and Europe.

Well, I won’t get in this taxes thing because that is far away from my field of expertise or whatever.
But I see that I missed a question from Linda. She asked: “Where does gas come from that you buy for your American made car?”
Let’s see. First I stop and fill at Q-T where they have filled their underground tanks with gasoline from a tanker truck. The tanker truck filled up from a gasoline tank farm on the other side of town. The tank farm filled its silos from a large underground pipe that carries gasoline across country from oil refineries. probably in Texas. The oil is mixed and comes in quanity order from these countries, #1 Canada #2 Mexico #3 Nigeria #4 Saudi Arabia #5 Venezuela #6 Iraq. Some by pipeline. Some by tanker ships. It originates from prehistoric plant life. i.e. fossil fuel.
It does make my American made car happy. Hope I have answered your question. Anything else??

From my perspective, md, once the globalization genie was released from the bottle, there’s no putting her back in there. No good argument can be made that consumers should be forced to buy more expensive consumer goods. And other than folks voluntarily buying American-made products, there’s no good way to limit competition from abroad. Trade tariffs don’t work well because the targeted country always responds by raising tariffs on our exports, which does nothing but freeze all trade.
The ultimate problem is the huge disparity in living conditions here and abroad. Smart computer programmers in India are willing to work for 1/10 of our wages. Until their living standards are similar to ours, we can’t match that.

Even when they depict the doomsday scenario, all these programs spinning out of control, no one projects a number more than 400 billion. First you said:
They are talking about income taxes, which from my understanding forms the bulk of taxes collected from individuals.
then you said:
My counterpoint is that the bottom 50% of wage earners are paying virtually nothing in income taxes.
Well, let’s do remember that income taxes, while significant, are but 43-33% of what the fed collects in revenues.
And I find it bit irksome that the lower end’s contribution in social insurance taxes gets completely swept aside in these arguments. As that particular chart would indicate, this contribution is just about as high as that made by the poor, put-upon upper-income earners paying income taxes.
(Not singling out Bruno at all–he’s usually pretty reasonable about this stuff.)

People who build highways aren’t government workers. Stimulus funds didn’t created government jobs – the jobs are funded by gov’t funds, which is different, but conservatives can’t understand that. Road (for example) have always been paid for by gov’t funds, but do you call the people building them gov’t workers? Of course not. The jobs added have not been in federal or state agencies. The claims that they are all government jobs are made by the same people who claim that no jobs have been created. And the alternative was?

Mick/Linda/josef:
Good comments all. My last ones on this thread are this:
A democracy is the only form of government I can think of that is automatically set up to “allow” its own destruction. That is what we must guard against and my personal belief is that we are failing in that regard. Time, as always, will tell.

“Jay and others here like to claim that everyone’s contribution to society is equal, implying that we all should earn the same income.”
What absolute, fabricated baloney.

all the stimulus did is keep the same people in the sam e positions that got us in trouble in the first place if the economy was left to its own demize we would have purged the people that did the wrong thing and left the people that had done the right thing standing and able to buy up the things that were left at the right price the stimulus proped up the prices of the things and kept the wrong idology alive. for that our grand children will pay because it will happen again and again until the system is alowed to work like it is suppose to. I say let the dems have all the rope they want they are going to hang themselvs in november.

There are and have been many jobs available. I believe it is each person’s responsibility to adjust to the economy. A great article was posted on more detail about the state of jobs in 2010… http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2720921/getting_a_job_in_7steps_explained_by.html
