What’s the best new movie you saw in 2009?

Viggo Mortensen, left, and Kodi Smit-McPhee in "The Road".

Viggo Mortensen, left, and Kodi Smit-McPhee in "The Road".

Oscar nominations come out Monday, which is always one of the year’s big days in Hollywood. So … any thoughts on what will be Best Picture?

“Avatar” was a great accomplishment, but its weaknesses in story disqualify it from Best Picture in my mind. I enjoyed “Inglourious Basterds,” but it was good not great. “Up in the Air” was again good but not great. I have not seen “Precious,” but those who have speak very highly of it. (My daughter said she was very glad she saw it, and never wants to see it again.) “The Hurt Locker” is on pay per view so I’ll probably see that soon. The most powerful new movie I’ve seen this year was “The Road,” based on the Cormac McCarthy novel and starring Viggo Mortensen. It doesn’t get mentioned much for best picture, which isn’t surprising given its bleakness. But it’s very well done, and like “Avatar” creates a very convincing alternative world.

So at this point I would lean toward the two films I haven’t seen yet: “Precious” and “Hurt Locker.”

Et vous?

Can you be more specific, jay. If I watched it in 2009, but it’s a movie on DVD (five years old) does that count?

Unless my daughter rents one while she’s home, I don’t contribute to “the artists” who adopt babies from overseas as though they’re some sort of fashion accessory. Plenty of babies here in the states that need a loving home. I guess they’re not good enough for the hollyweird.

The Road was, without question, the best film released in 2010. It’s a shame that it is not getting the recognition it deserves. While I love Jeff Bridges, and think he is very deserving, no one comes close to Viggo Mortensen’s portrayal of The Man. Not even close.

2009 was a hellish oblivion for good films…The best movie I SAW in 2009 was Shutter Island, and it won’t be released until feb 12th..so it doesn’t really count that it was test screened in 2009.

Oh well.. much like the presidential election of 2008, we must pick a winner from the lackluster collection of losers…

The best movie new to me that I saw in 2009 was “No Country for Old Men.” A dog food commercial done by the Cohen Brothers would be heads and shoulders above most of the rest of what Hollywood has been shipping out of late. Tommy Lee Jones is about as close as we’ve got these days to the giants of yesteryear’s silver screen…

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.

Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints!—I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!—and, if God choose,

There’s no need for Franken’s bill.

The ban on political contributions and expenditures by foreign nationals was first enacted in 1966 as part of the amendments to the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), an “internal security” statute. The goal of the FARA was to minimize foreign intervention in U.S. elections by establishing a series of limitations on foreign nationals. These included registration requirements for the agents of foreign principals and a general prohibition on political contributions by foreign nationals. In 1974, the prohibition was incorporated into the Federal Election Campaign Act (the FECA), [HTML] [PDF] giving the Federal Election Commission (FEC) jurisdiction over its enforcement and interpretation.–U.S. Federal Election Commission.

Franken’s bill has nothing to do with what the FEC says, and you know it. The bill covers foreign-owned domestic corporations–U.S. corporations whose stock is majority-owned by foreign nationals. That’s a whole lot different from the current prohibition on direct campaign contributions. Under current law and FEC regulations, for example, given the recent Supreme Court ruling, a U.S. corporation owned 51% by Saudi nationals could make unlimited campaign contributions to a U.S. candidate.

If you had a loser pays system, a person without money could never sue a person who did have money because they be bankrupt if they lost, no matter how good the case might be. Same with an individual suing a multi-national, the system would be skewed in favor of those with money even more than it is now.

Pelosi, Defense Analysts: Include Defense Pork In Spending Freeze

Defense should not be exempt. We should expect the same accountability and responsible spending there as anywhere else – we can have the strong defense we need without all the waste.

Republican Leaders Forming New Political Group

The American Action Network should be a big winner with Karl Rove leading the way. Are you guys sure you can’t get some of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth to join you, to provide…you know…integrity?

The Miss America Pageant is and….Houston we have a problem….This is going to stir up more than a few lingering stories and also open up some jurisdiction questions, but I better spill it anyway.

Lindsey Graham is Miss New Hampshire.

ABC Sunday Show Roundtable To Include…Roger Ailes?

Of all the TV Networks it’s obvious that ABC has developed a case of “Faux News Envy” and is now trying to imitate them in hopes of boosting their ratings. You know, breathless, hysterical “breaking news” type journalism with little or no fact checking and never challenging the assertions, propaganda talking points or outright lies of those their “journalists” interview!

You just watch, tomorrow Ailes will make assertions that would embarrass Beckster, Bill O, Rushblo and Sheannity and no one on the “panel of experts”, especially Barbara WA-WA will challenge him on them.

Ailes is gonna play these chumps and this program like Clapton does a guitar and even more of “Idiot America” will tune to ClusterFAUX…
