Feeling run down? A little ‘young blood’ might fix you right up
Dr. Amy Wagers. (The rumor that Wagers is actually 62 years old has not, repeat not, been substantiated.)
It sounds like something out of a bad movie. But Amy Wagers and other researchers at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston have found a way to reverse signs of aging in older mice.
“They recovered functions not quite to ‘young’ levels but really quite significantly, and easily, easily distinguishable from older animals that didn’t see this ‘young blood’ within their tissues,” Wagers said.
From Technology Review:
In the experiment, Wagers and team surgically connected the circulatory systems of two mice, allowing older animals to be exposed to blood–and all the molecules and cells it carries– from young animals. They found that the procedure made the blood-forming stem cells in older animals act young again; the overall number of these cells decreased, and the cells generated different varieties of blood cells in more appropriate ratios. “In aged animals, many of the changes we see normally that are associated with age were reversed,” said Wagers.

That is a scary concept. And why exactly would anyone want to live too long? There is no way you will want to work for 90 years, because if you retire earlier, you will certainly run out of money to live on. Seems like we are living a lot longer than most people plan for right now, so maybe we ought just to let the mortality rate drop a little, and we can all have a better chance of living decently to a reasonable age, rather than living on welfare (and poorly) to an old age.

The chairman of the leading climate change watchdog was informed that claims about melting Himalayan glaciers were false before the Copenhagen summit, The Times has learnt.
Rajendra Pachauri was told that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment that the glaciers would disappear by 2035 was wrong, but he waited two months to correct it. He failed to act despite learning that the claim had been refuted by several leading glaciologists.
The IPCC’s report underpinned the proposals at Copenhagen for drastic cuts in global emissions.

Last year, in a series of “town-hall meetings” across the country, Americans got the chance to debate President Obama’s proposed healthcare reforms.
What happened was an explosion of rage and barely suppressed violence.
Polling evidence suggests that the numbers who think the reforms go too far are nearly matched by those who think they do not go far enough.
But it is striking that the people who most dislike the whole idea of healthcare reform – the ones who think it is socialist, godless, a step on the road to a police state – are often the ones it seems designed to help.
In Texas, where barely two-thirds of the population have full health insurance and over a fifth of all children have no cover at all, opposition to the legislation is currently running at 87%.
Probably just bad blood.

This is one point where I disagree. It’s not that the use of statistics is off-limits per se with a “conservative”. In this case it was just the lack of a proper analogy that led to Gore’s loss in the debate. If Gore had related his statistics to say ERAs or total yards passed, depending on the season, etc., he would have been a shoe in with this segment of the voting population. If you do not connect with your intended audience, you might as well be talking to a wall.

Funny, RW, when I was revisiting Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” it said this:
“‘The organizer’s first job is to create the issues or problems,’ and ‘organizations must be based on many issues.’ The organizer ‘must first rub raw the resentments of the people of the community; fan the latent hostilities of many of the people to the point of overt expression. He must search out controversy and issues, rather than avoid them, for unless there is controversy people are not concerned enough to act.
The problem with Obama’s using that approach, is that he very quickly discovered that most Americans are not the liberal tools he cut his teeth on.
Those who willingly accept the role of victim, are an anomaly in the American psyche overall.

I think the first five or six cars I ever owned it was more likely than not the accelerator would stick so it seems like an odd panic to me, but I guess there are lots of younger drivers that wouldn’t know what to do.

I have not personally looked into all the details regarding the Toyota recall but what little bit I did hear seemed to indicate that the vehicles included in the recall were those that could contain a “gas pedal” (note that this “gas pedal” is a little more complicated than the old mechanical linkage since it contains a position dependent feedback within the gas pedal housing) from a particular vendor (also note that more than one company manufactured the gas pedals and Toyota most likely did not have a database that identified each specific vehicle made with suspect gas pedal) that is suspected to “stick” and thus cause the driver to lose control over the vehicle’s acceleration.

To make matters worse, the ad advocating anti-choice is false!
In the Philippines, abortion is (or was at that time) forbidden in all circumstances — the woman had no choice – so to say she “chose” not to abort is not true in fact.
I am disgusted that the so-called pro-lifers are only pro-choice if the woman chooses to have the baby – if she chooses not to, they would deny her that choice.
So it isn’t a choice to them at all, is it? It’s an order.
Too many pro-lifers are pro-death penalty, pro-war and anti-health care for maternity, neonatal, and child care.
What’s that word again?

In December 1994, Bill Clinton proposed a so-called middle-class bill of rights including more tax credits for families with children, expanded retirement accounts, and tax-deductible college tuition. Clinton had lost his battle for healthcare reform. Even worse, by that time the Dems had lost the House and Senate. Washington was riding a huge anti-incumbent wave. Right-wing populists were the ascendancy, with Newt Gingrich and Fox News leading the charge. Bill Clinton thought it desperately important to assure Americans he was on their side.–Robert Reich in Salon.
That was quite a trick since Fox News didn’t come into existence until October 7, 1996. Libs and their Fox fears are so funny. Salon got around to correcting the story two days later.

“Jenifer” is bound by chains of her own making. She can’t step outside the bounds of those chains because they won’t allow her to. She is the classic shut-in/isolated personality looking for relavency in a world that couldn’t give a crap about what she thinks. But even knowing this, she spends 12 hours a day (or more) here spewing writing of things that will amount to nothing. The people that “matter” are not listening to her and she is frustrated. She has to lash out at somebody. Southerners, conservatives, whatever. Pity her.
