Obama seeks to prove ‘we have the guts to govern.’

The election in Massachusetts changed both the political landscape and math in the Senate. President Obama is rejiggering his political organization and that of the Democratic National Committee, including hiring ‘08 campaign manager David Plouffe as a consultant. Congress is back into session, and a new political season begins with President Obama’s State of the Union speech Wednesday night.

The rhetoric coming out of the White House is pretty tough; we’ll see how that translates into action.

From The Wall Street Journal:

WASHINGTON—Coming off one of the most difficult weeks of his presidency, Barack Obama has beefed up his political staff and is expected to deliver an uncompromising State of the Union address. Aides said Sunday that the White House wasn’t making any abrupt policy shifts, even as the message was retooled to focus more sharply on job creation….

“People are working harder,” White House senior adviser David Axelrod said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” referring to the economy. “If they have a job, they’re working harder for less. They’re falling behind. That’s been true for a decade. They look at a wave of irresponsibility from Wall Street to Washington that led to that. And those were the frustrations that got the president elected in the first place, and they were reflected again on Tuesday” in the Massachusetts election.

The message Mr. Plouffe is bringing was a collaborative effort by him, White House officials and the leadership of the Democratic National Committee. That message is one of no retreat in the face of polling that shows opposition to the president’s push to overhaul health care and discontent with his economic efforts.

“Instead of fearing what may happen, let’s prove that we have more than just the brains to govern—that we have the guts to govern. Let’s fight like hell,” Mr. Plouffe wrote, striking the same chord Mr. Obama did at a town-hall meeting in Ohio Friday and likely will Wednesday in his first State of the Union address.

The White House is clearly trying to position itself as aligned with, rather than opposed to, the growing discontent with Washington and its performance. It’s a smart approach if they can pull it off.

You claim that the wingnuts policies drove the country into a ditch, after stating that this same bunch are always telling us they know how to create jobs and fix the economy.

Can you tell me about the policies you are referring to? Also, can you tell me about any of the current policies that have resulted in creating jobs or fixing the economy? Just curious to get your opinion. Thanks.

Contrary to what you might think, I am a proud member of the pro finger-pointing caucus. It wasn’t too long ago that my longtime colleague Paul Begala and I urged our friends on the other side of the aisle to engage early and often in the blame game.

Obama and the democrats have convinced themselves that the problems in Mass were because of the bank bailout. The mainstream media is also pushing this theme. Voters, however, were citing Health Care reform, and the stimulus program as the source of their discontent. So what’s the administrations response? Full steam ahead with health care and another stimulus program, and we’ll use this as an excuse to further regulate banks.

Until the Democrats start listening to the voters, they have an uphill battle.

Where were all of you politcial/analysts/commentators when Bush was office for 8 years. Now Barak is President everyone has a opinion and wow they are closely watching how things are done whereas they were sleep when Bush was in office. It is amazing how the Repulicans are acting like little boys pissed that they didn’t win and won’t pass anything to make the President look bad instead of saying let’s work together to get this country on board. If the Democrats health plan or any other plan is not gonna work what kind does the Republicans have. We haven’t heard from their majority LEADER. Why are you questioning Obama’s leadership when this country has never been perfect regardless who was in office. SO why has everything got to be perfect now. Like I said before, now Barak is in office and everyone is looking for perfection in a year and wow folks have lost their jobs and he can”t do the job. Excuse me a lot of our jobs have been going overseas for years and who is to blame for that. Did anyone doing that time DEMAND that the President bring those jobs back. First laid on theis azzes for 8 years and did nothing and now everyone is DEMANDING this and demanding that. Stop the madness please.

Bin Laden wording ‘indicator’ of upcoming attack: monitor

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Osama bin Laden’s word choice in the latest audio message attributed to him is seen as a “possible indicator” of an upcoming attack by his Al-Qaeda network, a US monitoring group warned Sunday.

IntelCenter, a US group that monitors Islamist websites, also said that manner of the release and the content of the message showed it was “credible” that it was a new release from the Saudi extremist.

“The Osama bin Laden audio message released to Al-Jazeera on 24 January 2010 contains specific language used by bin Laden in his statements in advance of attacks,” IntelCenter said in a statement.

The group said it considered the language “a possible indicator of an upcoming attack” in the next 12 months.

“This phrase, ‘Peace be upon those who follow guidance,’ appears at the beginning and end of messages released in advance of attacks that are designed to provide warning to Al-Qaeda’s enemies that they need to change their ways or they will be attacked,” the group said.

Obama’s Approval Most Polarized for First-Year President

RINCETON, NJ — The 65 percentage-point gap between Democrats’ (88%) and Republicans’ (23%) average job approval ratings for Barack Obama is easily the largest for any president in his first year in office, greatly exceeding the prior high of 52 points for Bill Clinton.

White House nightmare persists

At the end of Barack Obama’s worst week since taking power a year ago, the US president’s fortunes look set only to deteriorate over the coming days. Following the shock defeat of the Democratic candidate in Massachusetts on Tuesday, a move that deprived the president of his 60-seat super-majority in the Senate and left his legislative agenda in tatters, Mr Obama has just four days to reboot the system.

The reason obama is failing is becuase he has done none of the things he promised before he became president. He has not closoed gitmo, he has not passed healthcare legislation and he has not brought home any troops. Hes only increased the troop level. So what use is obama if hes not going to deliver on what he promised to do?

Our government has created a whole bunch of jobs. We call them the million dollar men (the women are just 3/4 of a million each though). Unfortunately, we outsourced them to Afghanistan and elsewhere so their efforts do not stimulate the economy here in the states. That’s just the way it has to be. It costs money to spread the word and protect us from all the bad people out there. The good news though is that they use bullets and guns and grenades and drones and planes and Hummers and MRE’s and other stuff and some of it gets made right here in the states. So, some of your tax dollars goes right back into some of your pockets. Isn’t that great.

This “new” approach would be funny were it not so pathetic. Another of Obama’s “new” and “improved” SHOVEL-READY PROJECTS???? Same crap/fertilizer…just a year older.

In Washington, a Lesson in Bureaucracy Comes in Every Bag

But nearly a month into the program, it’s turning out that government is having trouble legislating its way out of a plastic bag.

Solution?

Politics & Prose, a well-known local bookstore, sold one food item—mints—including a variety that came in a tin with Barack Obama’s likeness. To be safe, and avoid charging every customer who bought a book five cents a bag, the store dropped the mints. “It’s all been a little bit unclear,” says Tracey Filar Atwood, general manager. “Those items are not really at the core of our business. It was a very easy decision to make not to stock them,” she says

Satisfy the customer. And for the adults engrossed in navels?

Pleasure Place, an adult toy store, so far isn’t charging for bags—even though it has a license to sell food, including edible body frosting.

They can continue their “Slobbering Love Affair”.

Kinda reminds me of Obama’s health care bill. Create a bureaucratic mess and THEN try to tweak it.

Has Obama even appointed someone to oversee the Medicare behemoth or did he let that one fall to a “no-account” Czar?

We want our bills to hold steady and not keep steeply and steadily increasing (for example, my heating bill this month is up $200 because the “gas compensation fee” (money charged by the gas delivery system owner) was allowed to increase by that much…I can pay it but I almost make 6 figures, can the people in the lower middle or with more debt than I have make this unannounced increase?) We want to keep the health care we have without an the dramatic increase insuring people who don’t want to be insured will create….

All the president needs to do is listen then act….of course, he has to get HIS Congress to move in the same direction….

And by the way, his actions might be to DO NOTHING….no budget increases, no TARP, no “stimulus” to build Frisbee golf courses (yes, money was sent my state to do just that–hey, it was going to hire 4 people…hooptee-doo)….bet the President can’t understand why sometimes doing less is the better choice

Democrats new logic…

“Our recent stinging defeats at the polls were because you voters don’t understand our transformative agenda and how it will do wonderful things for you, if you are in a union anyway, or black, or latino..yeah its latinos we need ..x out black in the final revised speach, we have their votes anyway no need to give them any more bones…

To that Effect, we have revised our strategy and will even more forcefully jam this crap..revise in final speech to AGENDA….down your throat.”

It’s pretty interesting to see how emotionally handicapped many are concerning obama. OK, so the time is near and in 2010 we shift again. What exactly is it that republicans are going to do for us? All of their ideas were implemented in the last administration. I have two simple solutions: Get rid of NAFTA, produce in, and buy american. Forget the politics, we need to be mercantilists..

Well I for one would hope the first attempt would be something to balance the budget. They would (if they pull it off) still have to deal with presidential veto. I’d like to see a balanced budget no matter who wins in November…

There should be a we don’t trust both parties movement:

“the United States Supreme Court handed a huge victory to the special interests and their lobbyists – and a powerful blow to our efforts to rein in corporate influence. This ruling strikes at our democracy itself. By a 5-4 vote, the Court overturned more than a century of law – including a bipartisan campaign finance law written by Senators John McCain and Russ Feingold that had barred corporations from using their financial clout to directly interfere with elections by running advertisements for or against candidates in the crucial closing weeks.

This ruling opens the floodgates for an unlimited amount of special interest money into our democracy. It gives the special interest lobbyists new leverage to spend millions on advertising to persuade elected officials to vote their way – or to punish those who don’t. That means that any public servant who has the courage to stand up to the special interests and stand up for the American people can find himself or herself under assault come election time. Even foreign corporations may now get into the act.

I can’t think of anything more devastating to the public interest. The last thing we need to do is hand more influence to the lobbyists in Washington, or more power to the special interests to tip the outcome of elections.”Obama

LA, I’m going to have to ask you to abide by a rule I imposed earlier on another blogger. Please limit your off-topic posts to two (2) per post.

Ha Ha.

Jay is still smarting over that SC ruling.

Nice try- better said “does he have the guts to continue to do something outrageously stupid behind closed doors in a room filled with bribes about a something the majority of the American people don’t want”. What a joke. This President is less transperant and less popular than Bush/Cheney. Can you imagine being so bad that you make Hannity look correct?

“What exactly is it that republicans are going to do for us?” Good question. If it’s their intent to go back to what they did for us all those years when they had control over the house, senate, and white house, then I’d like to see another option.

** I’d like to see a balanced budget no matter who wins in November…**

Yes, a balanced budget is a good goal but right now it has to be about unemployment. The blueprint is out there, just look at some of the program’s from FDR’s new deal and try to adapt them to the current situation.

Why does President Obama decide to bring back his Campaign Team for Public Relations instead of Working across party lines to address the issues?
So let’s get this straight: he is more concerned with POLITICS (winning elections and keeping congressional seats) and his image than he is with GOVERNING and working to FIX our country’s problems.
Does anyone else see this…

Yes We Can?

Yes we can what?

Drive the country toward socialism?
Drive the country into debt beyond imagination?
Attempt to cause the quality of healthcare to plummet?
Cause the democratic party to lose its congressional majorities in November?
Not get re-elected in 2012?

Yes you can. Yes you have. Yes you will.

Folks are ignorant one seat is lost and folks are popping the champagne as if Obama is done. If this was a socalist society all of you guys will be in jail. This is no popularity contest. Who are taking these polls because no one talked to me nor my friends. Wow jobs were not created. It takes more than him to create jobs it takes the corporations to do it as well. I still have not seen/heard the Republicans come up with a better plan. It is funny how folks are saying Obama is not working. The man has been working since day one or he needs to stick to one thing at a time, or my favorite when is he gonna do something else. I can’t wait for the news conference when he gets on the air and curses everyone out. Obama every black person in America feels your pain because no matter what you do they will have something to say and they will find any and every little thing to say you are lazy and you don’t know what you are doing while the other folks do nothing. Where is the Republican plan. My favorite headline is “The Honeymoon is over for Barak”. I am quite sure Barak knows good and well this job was no honeymoon. Some of these folks are against healthcare reform are liars. As soon as the bill is passed they will be the first one in line. Believe it.

Probably too little, too late.

The Dems have the higher ground, but they failed miserably to frame and spin the health care debate. Of course, the GOP and its allies are all about spinning and have dominated the health care spin (including borderline lies) since last summer and now it’s likely too late.

Mick,

For the rest of us it would be a disaster – If socialism is so great, why is it such a failure?

Unless you are holding up Cuba as an example. As I see it, we are 5% of the world population and generate 25% of the worlds wealth. maybe I just don’t see your point.
