Saturday Night at the Movies … and a map!

A few years back, I gave my wife a Netflix subscription for Christmas, and all my holiday gifts should be so popular. We use it pretty regularly.

So I got a kick out of playing with this little interactive feature courtesy of the NY Times. They break down Netflix orders by zip code for 10 major metro areas, including Atlanta. You can see the most popular Netflix orders in your zip code for 2009 and compare it to those in other zip codes here in Atlanta or in nine other metro areas.

One of the most surprising things was that “Benjamin Button” was the most popular Netflix movie nationwide. Some of the differences were pretty stark. “Mall Cop,” for example, was pretty big OTP, but died ITP. “Frost/Nixon” did big numbers in the Sandy Springs/Vinings corridor, while “Milk,” not surprisingly, was almost exclusively an ITP order.

I went to the little interactive feature but I guess up here where I live we don’t interest Netflix or the New York Times. Just as well, I’ve never rented a movie anyway.

The other night I was flippin’ around the TV and stumbled across an abomination of a movie called “Southern Comfort”. I only watched a few minutes of it because it was making me nauseous and I can only imagine what a Cajun would have felt seeing such drivel.

Interesting…I’m a lot more in touch with my neighborhood than I would have thought. Some surprises, thouh, I’d have not thought “Pineapple Express” would have been so popular–hmm, kinda makes me wonder if that really IS what I thought I smelled…the Bond flick didn’t surprise me much, but I kinda expected “Star Trek” to have played better…”Religulous” did about what I expected…the “race” divide is pretty clear, but it does appear that southside viewers are more willing to watch northside movies than vice-versa…But what I really want to know is about those folks in 30336–them’s some movie watching fools and they see ‘em all just about it…

We’ll have to disagree on that one! :-) Now, the Southern Comfort here? That one I like a lot! Incidentally, Netflix is great! I’m one of those folks whose taste in movies is not mainstream and netflix has a HUGE selection to fit every taste…you can also get those tv shows you missed or would like to see again. We just recently went back and saw all of “Babylon 5″ from start to finish…Unmentionable is the movie nut in this household, he’ll watch anything from the latest Kung Fu kicker to the silent classics with equal fervor and he thinks Netflix is the greatest thing since sliced bread…

Yes I saw your Little Foxes clip, though I’ve never seen the whole movie. Like I’ve said before, I’m not a big movie buff, although I do like to see a good one on occasion. I just have trouble finding movies that I like. I like comedies that are funny, but most aren’t funny to me; I like a good character study and they don’t make many of those now, and I like a historical movie if it’s accurate which they seldom are. I think that’s how notions of history get mixed up a lot. People watch a “based on fact” movie but they don’t know what is fact and what’s dramatic license and most will never look into it to find out.

I’m a big fan of Lillian Hellman and of course Bette Davis! But Hellman was a person after my own heart. Her testimony before the House Unamerican Activities Committee is what I’d like to think I would have done in time and place. Her statement “I cannot cut my conscience to fit the fashion of the day” is one of my life’s credos.

They’re watching and listening, you know. To beat them, you got to stay off the grid or else stay plastered all over the grid or else wear one of these tin hats. It’s hard. You can’t just sit back and enjoy a good movie or anything anymore without having someone watch you. There should be laws against that sort of stuff. Peeping tom-tom laws or something.

What is it about Jay B always trying to pit zip codes against each other? It’s not like we have our own flags and militias or anything.

Anyway, my kids used to rent movies when they were little but I’ve never rented one since. Should I report that to my census taker so my zip code doesn’t lose a tank or something if that post office three streets over invades?

I don’t think guilt-ridden is a category I’d ever put you in! Seriously, though, I felt obligated to give it a shot…blea-a-ah! I was one of the pioneer, front-liners in “the struggle for gay rights,” (he says so modestly) and I recall well Milk and the reaction to his assassination. I also recall Milk beforehand. His “struggle” and my “struggle” were not the same by a long shot and I didn’t then nor do I now think he “spoke well for our people.” He went out of his way to buy into the stereotype and Penn went out of his way to make sure we didn’t miss it…

It’s not like we have our own flags and militias or anything.

Now y’all do know that all Georgia counties are divided into Militia districts? And unless the law has been changed in recent years, if you’re a male between 18-45 I think is the ages, and you’re not active military or National Guard, as a Georgia resident you are a member subject to call up. I think the last call-up was 1864, but there were several before that. Maybe a lawyer out there can fill us in.

“I don’t think guilt-ridden is a category I’d ever put you in!”

Thank you. I have my guilt problems, but they tend to be more personal. I don’t generally feel guilt for the actions of others, but I *do* try to learn from them and to do what I can to keep them from happening again.

One of those things I learned was how NOT to blame the victim of a crime. And it does rile me when others do, even if they don’t realize that is what they are doing.
