Brit Hume, the Fox News commentator, went on national TV this week and publicly criticized another person’s faith as inadequate.
Facing a backlash for those remarks, Hume is now casting himself as the victim of religious intolerance.
Got that? The victim of religious bigotry and intolerance is the man who publicly condemned another’s faith as inadequate.
To review briefly, here’s Hume’s original statement on Fox News Sunday:
“… the Tiger Woods that emerges once the news value dies out of this scandal — the extent to which he can recover — seems to me to depend on his faith. He’s said to be a Buddhist; I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. So my message to Tiger would be: ‘Tiger, turn to the Christian faith, and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world.’”
According to Hume and others, he has become the victim of anti-Christian bigotry for those remarks. “It is certainly true in secular America today that the most controversial two words you can ever utter in a public space are ‘Jesus Christ,’” Hume said in a later interview about the uproar.
That’s absurd. It’s not about Christianity. Among other things, it’s about poor manners. Like a lot of Americans, I was raised to respect religious belief, and I think it’s rude and crass to drag another person’s private faith into the public square for judgment and belittlement, as Hume did to Woods.
Reportedly, Hume’s longtime Christian faith deepened after the tragic suicide of his son 11 years ago. I get that and accept that, and I’m glad that Hume found solace at what must have been a very difficult time. If Hume had reached out privately to Woods to share that experience, I’d have no problem with it whatsoever, and I doubt many others would either.
In fact, if Hume had merely said on air that his own Christian faith had helped him through hard times and that Woods might benefit from it too, I’d find it hard to object much. (Such a statement would have seemed odd and out of place from a political commentator on a news show, but that’s another issue.)
However, that’s not what Hume did. He said Woods is a Buddhist and suggested that Buddhism is an inferior religion.
Thanks to an earlier post on this subject, I’m now among those being accused of being anti-Christian and intolerant. Well, let’s try a little experiment, shall we? Let’s imagine that a prominent newscaster had said the following about Hume at a difficult time in his life:
“Brit’s said to be a Christian — I don’t think that faith offers the kind of solace that is offered by the Buddhist faith — so my message to Brit would be, turn to the Buddhist faith and you can make a total recovery.”
Personally, I would find that just as objectionable as what Hume said about Woods. A person’s religion is not a topic for public judgment. But I guarantee that most of those who today rush to defend Hume’s comments in the name of tolerance would be singing quite a different tune. They would not be celebrating the airing of religious issues, they would be complaining about a lack of basic respect for faith.
And in that case, they’d be right.

One of those things (me patronizing you) has absolutely no relevance to the other (you reviewing research). Now I see why you may get some unpleasant responses from PIs. You have to connect the dots, or not if they’re not there.
As far as RW, I’m quite sure I have the right guy. He’s about 55 now, hails from around Lilburn, and is a telemarketer (alright, “communications” but I kid him like that). From Bob Barr no less:
(off topic…)
”
Yes — the not-so-bright, would-be terrorist from Nigeria got though international and domestic security mechanisms supposed to have stopped him long before the jerk lit his underwear afire before landing in Detroit. And yes — the incident happened during the administration of President Barack Obama. But the sniping at the president by Republicans, including former Vice President Cheney, and by conservative radio and TV commentators, borders on — if not passing into — asinine.
The criticism has included such childishness as blasting Obama for waiting a few days before making a national speech on the incident. For heaven’s sake, the president was briefed on the incident from the moment it occured; he made statements almost immediately indicating his concern and that he was being regularly briefed; he took time to gather the facts and meet with his national security team; and then he appeared publicly to give a rational, measured, but hard-hitting response. And for this, a former vice president criticizes him.
Partisanship truly has pervasively infected our political system when a reasonable, measured, factual, timely and substantive response by a president to a single security incident — the roots of which clearly indicate long-simmering problems that predated his tenure in office — is publicly blasted as irresponsible. In point of fact, those levelling such counterproductive attacks are the ones engaging in irresponsible behavior.”

Meanwhile, in 2000, 6 percent of Americans self-identified as “very conservative” while 32 percent said they were simply “conservative.” By the end of 2009, 9 percent said they were “very conservative,” but the percentage who said they were “conservative” fell by a point to 31 percent. The percentage self-identifying as “moderate” fell from 40 percent to 36 percent. In the last decade, Americans not only moved to the right, but deeply to the right. -AmSpec

Two points:
1. Hume’s comment might have been appropriate if it had been made in the context of a personal commentary. If he had said, “I don’t know much about Buddhism but for me personally I have found…….” that would have been acceptable.
But his statements were made as if they were fact…”only Christianity” which leads me to point 2.
2. Hume’s lack of knowledge
Hume made these statements I’m sure out of a strong sense of personal connecting with his faith. I respect that. But he stated this as if “only Christianity offered….”. He made this statement as if it were a fact. Nothing could be further from the truth. I’m not going to waste space here but Judaism and many other faiths with which I have some familiarity embrace the notion of forgiveness.
Now I don’t doubt that the pastor of his church tells him all the time that the only way to forgiveness and salvation is through Jesus. But that is the belief of his church.
It doesn’t make it true – that were Tiger to convert he would indeed be forgiven because religion and belief is just that, belief and faith. It cannot be proven by any acceptable standard. And Christianity is not the only faith to offer forgivness and a path to “salvation”, nirvana, whatever you want to call that human state.

No words will get you in more trouble among the politically correct crowd in the USA than telling people what Jesus Himself clearly stated – “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life – no man comes to the Father except through Me”. Little do they realize, if God is truly a fair and true God, He will PUNISH them for those very deeds, because they are not in fact loving their neighbor as they should; they are placing themselves above.
“The last shall become first, and the first shall become last”. Remember that O devout and perfect ones.

The problem with too many of the evangelical right, including ther folks over at Fox News, is that they don’t seem to practice Christianity as a whole. No, they prefer to follow the neo-con, GOP, uber-capitalist version of Jesus Christ and the teachigs that fit with this philosphy only. You know the Jesus Christ that doesn’t mind being used for financial and political gain.

Re the economic problems we face as a country.
We solve nothing by making up reasons why we are now up the creek without a paddle. The reasons are in any history book dealing with
the Executive & Legislative branches of government.
When Reagan took office he sent a budget to congress that called for tax cuts. After extensive hearings, all on C-SPAN, congress passed the budget with the tax cuts & Reagan signed it. But nobody cut spending.
So we have our income cut but our expenses increasing.
29 years later we are still doing what we did in 1981, cutting taxes and increasing spending. Obama has cut taxes and increased spending.
So did Bush 43. Bush 41 & Clinton did have tax increases but not enough, except for 2 years under Clinton, to offset the increases in spending. The Reagan model still governs. And until we get away from that model we will not solve this country’s economic problems.
Historical note: national debt 1981 – $950 billion. National debt 2010 – $12 trillion. I am saying this is the result of cutting taxes and increasing spending.

Hume is right and Bookman is wrong. It is good to see someone like Hume finally telling the truth. If all Christians would do so without trying to be PC, this would be a much better world.

If Bookman couldn’t flog Bush or those that support him, he’d have nothing to write about.

Jesus said something else: “Blessed be the children.” Could that have been because their view of the world was new, before growing into an opinionated, negative view of things, what Buddists call aversions. Stand back for a moment and imagine what children must wonder looking at the political “dialog” in this country. Blessed are the children indeed.

I’m so weary of FOX, Palin and Co. unleashing endless character assassinations, distortions and outright whoppers upon “liberals”, then bleating and whining that they are victims of persecution when anyone points out the hypocrisy.
Talk about glass houses and stones.

Is it now rude to compare one belief system with another? Did Mr Hume accurately portray the tenets of Christianity and Buddhism? Did he say anything critical or insulting about Buddhism except that it was different from Christianity? If all belief systems were the same, would we have different belief systems? If we aren’t free to discuss the factual differences between belief systems, religious, political, or whatever without fear of being branded bigots and rude, are we truly free? Don’t we all grow by hearing from the “other side” about the aspects of our belief systems that we perhaps haven’t examined. Do we want to grow? Seems to me we value the comfort of unchallenged beliefs over eventual change that comes from a fair and free exchange of ideas. Just my view.

So a man stating his beliefs is something you can’t handle???? tolerate others beliefs???/ Sure keep telling yourself that. As long as they fit into your politically correct wet brain. Ask a Buddhist if it was factual.Hume felt free to say it. People have the right to be Christians and feel their faith offers forgiveness. So when you sit down tonight with all your tolerance . Please place that somewhere safe.
So scary Brit Hume thought the forgiveness angle of Christianity would be of more comfort to Tiger than the karma of Buddhism. Opinion take it or leave it. The mere fact you were offended shows me just how tolerant you aren’t Now lets all discuss Al Sharpton advising us Tiger is is a racist because he didn’t have any black woman on the list. i think you just might agree with him. political correctness and all.

It is PC nowadays to attack Christians. I think it is a matter of personal integrity or the lack of it. I doubt Brit Hume is bothered much by the attacks against him. When one reads what he actually said and then see how those dismissing him are phrasing it, one can see who is wrong. Smile on, Brit Hume! Hopefully the others can come to a time in their life when they can see why you can smile and are able to do the same instead of feeling a need to twist and attack.

It’s a shame that those who preach tolerance are the least tolerant of others views. Last time I checked, this was the United States of America. I believe people have free speech in this country, so leave Brit alone.

Brit Hume is a hypocrite without credibility. Hume is a far right neo-con who played the role of a crutch that helped prop up the Bush/Cheney Regime. The people who helped Bush and Cheney screw up our Country should be forced to accept some of the blame for their crimes. ABC had very good reasons to fire his arse.
