Cold enough for you?
The temperature today isn’t predicted to rise above freezing, and the low tonight is supposed to be a frigid 18 degrees. In other words, the weather gives us a perfect opportunity to talk a little more about the realities of global warming.
For starters, this isn’t really very cold. Atlanta’s record low for today, Jan. 5, was 3 degrees, set back in 1884; the record low for tomorrow, Jan. 6, was minus 1, also set in 1884. That’s cold. Compared to those temperatures, today is practically balmy.
In fact, winter weather here in Atlanta has been getting warmer and warmer. Over the past 15 years, according to Weather Channel data, we’ve set seven record highs for January. We have set no record lows.
I made a similar point in a column last month, noting that 24 out of the 31 daily record highs for December had been set just in the last 25 years, while we set only 3 record lows in that time frame.
In that column, I also warned against the fallacy of trying to draw larger conclusions from temperatures in just one location, such as Atlanta. But as it turns out, scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado had noticed the same phenomenon but on a national scale:
BOULDER—Spurred by a warming climate, daily record high temperatures occurred twice as often as record lows over the last decade across the continental United States, new research shows. The ratio of record highs to lows is likely to increase dramatically in coming decades if emissions of greenhouse gases continue to climb.
“Climate change is making itself felt in terms of day-to-day weather in the United States,” says Gerald Meehl, the lead author and a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). “The ways these records are being broken show how our climate is already shifting.”
The study, by authors at NCAR, Climate Central, The Weather Channel, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has been accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters. It was funded by the National Science Foundation, NCAR’s sponsor, the Department of Energy, and Climate Central.
If temperatures were not warming, the number of record daily highs and lows being set each year would be approximately even. Instead, for the period from January 1, 2000, to September 30, 2009, the continental United States set 291,237 record highs and 142,420 record lows, as the country experienced unusually mild winter weather and intense summer heat waves….
“If the climate weren’t changing, you would expect the number of temperature records to diminish significantly over time,” says Claudia Tebaldi, a statistician with Climate Central who is one of the paper’s co-authors. “As you measure the high and low daily temperatures each year, it normally becomes more difficult to break a record after a number of years. But as the average temperatures continue to rise this century, we will keep setting more record highs.”

This graphic shows the ratio of record daily highs to record daily lows observed at about 1,800 weather stations in the 48 contiguous United States from January 1950 through September 2009. Each bar shows the proportion of record highs (red) to record lows (blue) for each decade. The 1960s and 1970s saw slightly more record daily lows than highs, but in the last 30 years record highs have increasingly predominated, with the ratio now about two-to-one for the 48 states as a whole.
Climate is an average taken over time, just as a baseball batting average is measured over time. In both cases, you’re still going to get day-to-day fluctuations. Ted Williams was a great hitter, the last man to hit .400 over a season, but even he went 0 for 5 pretty often. He just had fewer of those cold hitting spells than poor hitters did.
Likewise, even in a warming climate, you’re going to get the occasional cold spell, which is what we’re seeing today. You still get variations of heat and cold. But if the planet is indeed warming, you would expect to get fewer and fewer record lows over time, and more and more record highs.
That is exactly the pattern we’re seeing.

And, yes, I believe had we actually counted the ballots in Florida and experienced 8 years of Al Gore and Lieberman, we would be MUCH better off as a Nation.
No war in Iraq, continuation of Clinton’s fiscal policies (remember surpluses???), No torture, etc.

Lighten up y’all, here’s a funny for ya…
We were dressed and ready to go out for
the New Years Eve Party. We turned on
a night light, turned the answering machine on,
covered our pet parakeet and put the cat in
the backyard.
We phoned the local cab company and
requested a taxi.
The taxi arrived and we opened the front
door to leave the house.
The cat we put out in the yard, scoots back
into the house.. We didn’t want the cat shut in the house
because she always tries to eat the bird.
My wife goes out to the taxi,
while I went inside to get the cat. The
cat runs upstairs, with me in hot pursuit.
Waiting in the cab, my wife
doesn’t want the driver to know that
the house will be empty for the
night. So, she explains to the taxi driver
that I will be out soon,
‘He’s just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother.’
A few minutes later, I get into the cab.
‘Sorry I took so long,’
I said, as we drove away. ‘That stupid
bitch was hiding under the bed. I had to poke her with a
coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off,
so I grabbed her by the neck. Then, I had to wrap her in a
blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked! I
hauled her fat ass downstairs and threw her out into the back yard!’
The cab driver hit a parked car.
Congrats

“Waste of money to research something that isn’t real.”
We’ve been spending money on moon research and sending people to Mars for years. We spend money on the research of all types of species, behaviors and lifestyles. There is a program that has been available for years that encourages people to request grants from the government for research.
I’ll ask again, why is global warming research causing such a stinker for non-believers?

doggone – As I’ve learned through several posts you have neither the intellect or education to attempt to teach me anything. FYI gravity is neither a theory nor a scientific theory, primarily because the data supporting it is vastly more verifiable than the global warming data. But since you’re so smart, please tell me why the average global temperature only increased 0.1 degrees Celsius from 1900 to 1950 despite the huge population increase and CO2 emissions (everyone was burning wood and coal)?

Was the end of the iceages caused by man-made global warming?
Was the Huronian Ice age 2.4-2.1 billion years ago caused by man-made GW?
Was the Cryogenian Ice age 850-630 million years ago caused by man-made GW?
One last questions for all who are apparently SURE that man-made global warming is a fact.
What is the evidence that the medieval warm period (which was very, very close to the exact same temps as today’s) was caused by man-made global warming?
If man-made global warming was not responsible for the Medieval warming period, then is it possible that man is not the main factor of our current day warming period?

Over the holidays I was back home in Dallas going through some old family photos from the ’30s through ’60s. They were all taken in East and West Texas, and the Metroplex.
We all noted the amount of snow that used to fall, and discussed how tire chains were necessary through the early ’70s or so. Now they’re rusting up in tow sacks.
Here in our part of CO the snowstorms are fewer and dump less snow. I’ve been able to plant several varieties of vegetation that the natives tell me won’t survive; they’re doing fine for going on five years now, albeit with some heavy mulching and a little extra care.

Jay, even more enlightenment, from http://www.surfacestations.org website.
NEWS Updated 07/16/2009
Surfacestations project reaches 82% of the network surveyed. 1003 of 1221 stations have been examined in the USHCN network.
The reliability of the data used to document temperature trends is important, and we can’t know for sure if global warming is a problem if we can’t trust the data. This is evident when looking at the above link and the pdf report within it, which shows that that 89 percent of the stations – nearly 9 of every 10 – fail to meet the National Weather Service’s own siting requirements that stations must be 30 meters (about 100 feet) or more away from an artificial heating or radiating/
reflecting heat source. In other words, 9 of every 10 stations are likely reporting higher or rising temperatures because they are badly sited.
“It gets worse. We observed that changes in the technology of temperature stations over time also has caused them to report a false warming trend. We found major gaps in the data record that were filled in with data from nearby sites, a practice that propagates and compounds errors. We found that adjustments to the data by both NOAA and another government agency, NASA, cause recent temperatures to look even higher. The conclusion is inescapable: The U.S. temperature record is unreliable.”

Mrs. G – Merci. I’ve actually read a fair amount on the subject. I posted a link to a very respectable and unbiased source above that has evidence showing we’ve been cooling since about 2000 and the cause of the 1950-2000 warming was actually CFC’s not CO2. Did you know CFC’s in the atmosphere retain like three magnitudes of the heat CO2 does? I’m not screaming global warming is a myth, I’m saying it’s unproven. But what I really feel strongly about is that if global warming exists and if it actually represents a serious threat to life as we know it (wouldn’t longer growing seasons in Canada and Russia be a good thing?) O’s cap and trade proposals would not solve the problem. Just like the current health care legislation will not vastly improve out health care, and it certainly won’t reduce health care costs below 16% of GDP. I’m concerned that the newly empowered Dems will now push through another ill-conceived piece of legislation that we don’t really need primarily in the name of increasing government intervention into our daily lives. As a nation we are much dumber and much more dependent on Uncle Sam than we were in my youth, and I think that’s a bad and potentially very dangerous thing. Y2k will be the end of us all an dnow the earth is warming and the sky is falling and only the Dems can save us by appointing another 100 or 200 czars of global warming, cap and trade and universal health care oversight.

Due to America’s financial success, imperialist foreign policy, and zionist sympathies we have become the jihadist’s favorite target. So while you are disgusted by my willingness to throw out the wheat with the chaff (not that some 10th or 16th century Arabs are exactly prize wheat) I tell you it’s the only solution certain to eliminate the jihadist threat/problem. BTW the lie part I wqas referring to was that you claimed you and others didn’t know the moon was not cheese until we went there. That is false many on earth knew the moon was not cheese well before 1969. Because they were able to use telescopes. Jake, when your solutions to problems are wildly immoral, delusional AND impossible…perhaps it is time to either change medications, perform a lobotomy on yourself, commit yourself to a proper institution OR (perish the thought)…rethink your position.

LHS – it might not be prudent to assume that he actually knows his “solutions” are any of those.

Lord – Do you think it’s immoral to kill someone that’s trying to kill you? I believe jesus turned the other cheek and went rather meekly to the cross.

“I cant beleive some of you are to gullible, so trusting of the US GOVT, the EU, the UN etc.”
Speak for yourself, poo receptacle. I wasn’t gullible enough to believe that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11, that the Saudis are our friends, that KBR had the soldiers’ safety in mind when building electrified showers, that wiretapping US citizens without warrants was essential to our safety, that nobody knows what happened to the billion$ in Iraq, that the SEC was actually policing our financial system as per their job description, that marijuana is more dangerous than alcohol, or that rich men spend millions to give up lucrative paychecks for a Congressman’s wage because they give a *bleep* about my childrens’ future.
Regarding this topic, Green Jeans and I are simply pro-common sense. I’m sorry you find that idea so offensive to your core values.

Nope, but the records Jay quoted show that it COULD BE colder than it is.

Do YOU know that the “eye for an eye” passage is a plea for mercy, not a road map for revenge?

This really doesn’t have to do with global warming but after reading Jay’s piece, it got me to thinking. How many did times did Ted Williams go 0-5 in his career? I can find that he played 2292 regular season games with a lifetime batting average of .344 and only struck out 709 times in 7706 official at bats (which is mighty impressive in it’s own right) and drew 2019 walks for an on base percentage of .482. Anybody know how to find the answer to that?

Matilda,
From your earlier post:
“Thank you! I also wonder what the heck is so objectionable about clean air, water, and land? Why does the idea of discovering and implementing CLEAN forms of energy bring such harsh criticism? How many loved ones must a person watch suffer and die from cancer before thinking, “Gee, toxins are bad for us, aren’t they?”
You stated earlier to me on the healthcare thread that you like to watch all news channels in order to keep an open mind and balanced perspective. If you actually do what you said, you would know that the debate is not about implementing cleaner forms of energy. It is about the left using questionable “science” in order to enforce a policy on all of us that would amount to additional taxes. This is about Cap and Tax, Matilda. Cap and Tax is a job killing piece of legislation that we especially don’t need during a recession. Do you know anyone against a cleaner earth? Wouldn’t we get cleaner energy much quicker if we invested the amount of time and money into actually producing technology for alternative energy or making the current technology better? This makes more sense than manipulating data to enforce a new tax scheme, which will do nothing but redistribute wealth.
