Cutting the ‘2 Big 2 Fail’ down 2 size

In the discussion about banks that are “too big to fail,” I think you start with two observations:

1.) In general, competition and the discipline of failure are better, smarter regulators than government bureaucrats. That doesn’t mean government regulation is unnecessary; it does mean that regulators should be empowered to do only what the market cannot or will not do.

2.) Banks that are “too big to fail” are largely immune to the discipline of failure and to the rigors of competition.

That in turn leaves you with two basic solutions: You can greatly expand the gov’t regulation applied to the “2 Big 2 Fail,” or you can reduce and limit the size of those institutions and by doing so reintroduce the spectre of failure to the system.

There’s a move afoot in Congress to take the second approach, and I hope they have the guts to carry it out.

From the Los Angeles Times:

Angered by bailouts that have kept corporate titans such as American International Group Inc. afloat, members of a key House committee last week voted to give the government vast new power to downsize private companies, something that happens now only in the most egregious antitrust cases.

Instead of helping cushion the fall of Wall Street powerhouses through government aid or variations on traditional bankruptcy, there is growing momentum in Congress to cut those firms down to size before they start teetering to limit the damage if they do collapse.

“The era of the big bank is over,” said Simon Johnson, an MIT professor and former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund.

Support for Health Care Plan Falls to New Low
Monday, November 23, 2009

Just 38% of voters now favor the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s the lowest level of support measured for the plan in nearly two dozen tracking polls conducted since June.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 56% now oppose the plan.

Half the survey was conducted before the Senate voted late Saturday to begin debate on its version of the legislation. Support for the plan was slightly lower in the half of the survey conducted after the Senate vote.

Prior to this, support for the plan had never fallen below 41%. Last week, support for the plan was at 47%. Two weeks ago, the effort was supported by 45% of voters.

Couldn’t that be done by simply enforcing current regulations and not letting an “investment firm” take deposits to become a bank? Or some other method of skirting regulations.

Skip, we want improved health care, like insurance companies not being able to deny us b/c of preexisting conditions. What we DON’T want is to have to pay for other people’s health care.

first of all, where would Congress get the authority to break up any banks or investment houses (if they’re not a monopoly, I wouldn’t think that Congress could do such a thing) … ??? would be interested to hear what peeps think.

secondly, how do you measure the size of the corporation? if it’s a bank, do you look at their asset/liability ratio? or just the amount of deposits? their market saturation?? if it’s an investment firm, do you look at their risk level? their overall assets under management? where they’re invested??

Well, I see where this young fellow up in Illinois was walking around minding his own business and being peaceable when one day his Mommy up and told him his Daddy was Charles Manson. It throwed the young man out of whack quite a bit. He told the newspaper people he was downright shocked. Said he was a nice man most of the time but once in a while he got real mad for no reason. Anyway, if I was his neighbors these Muslim Terrists wouldn’t be the only people I’d be keeping a eye out for.

Anyways, seems to me the guvmint ought to keep its grubby hands off big business, being as how they are part of the Free Innerprize system. I reckon if they grow real big we could name the country the United States of IBM or Google or Morgan Stanley or Microsoft and just turn the whole treasury over to them instead of bailing them out again when they get into trouble. I would as soon take my orders from a CEO with ten houses and gold-plated faucets and all that stuff than take them from a Kenyan that’s one of Those People and wants to take my money and give it to a bunch of welfare bums.

But no, they won’t quit till every co. is so little it can put its headquarters in a double-wide. It just don’t pay to get ahead in this country anymore.

Have a good day everybody and don’t ask your Mama who your real Daddy is. You might not want to know.

100% agree with Jay on this. I didn’t understand why we did not do this during the bailout, until I realized that with the strings attached to bailout money, the government has a toehold on controlling almost 50% of the capital in this country with just 4 or 5 large banks.

It is for this reason I believe any attempt to break up the large banks will fail.

I have to agree with USinUK (shudder) about the whole authority issue. :-) If we are going to start breaking things up.. where will it stop? What about the airline industry? If Delta were to fail the economic impact would be far reaching until the industry had a chance to recover. We already own GM, AIG, etc.

Given their reasoning. the US is too big to fail.. does that mean we can start downsizing Gov’t?

Well it is about time someone inside the beltway showed some glimmer of brains.

Mrs. Godzilla,

Yes, that is correct. The courts broke up a perceived monopoly and AT&T became an unregulated utility. It survives or dies by its own hand.

As we have seen, with the merging of AT&T, SBC and Bellsouth, not even AT&T is too big to fail.

BTW, SBC bought AT&T and Bellsouth and decided to keep the name. AT&T in its original form did not survive, but instead was taken over.

1) If you own it, you control it. (although the current situation is the exact opposite)

2) In a free society, you are free to fail. (NO bailouts.)

3) No governmental manipulation or intervention; free market fails when government intervenes.

Now that the truth is beginning to dribble out about the Troubled Asset Relief Program – the Government Accountability Office’s eagle-eyed auditors said they found no evidence that it prevented a financial meltdown a year ago – this $700 billion monument to political posturing should be shut down. This can be done in three easy steps: First, federal financial regulators should be called before Congress to explain why they did nothing before 2008 to stop the proliferation of toxic mortgage-backed securities; second, all outstanding TARP funds given to corporations should be returned with interest by a date certain; and third and most important, government-owned shares in companies that received TARP funds should be sold.

I have long thought that big business, not government, is what squashes small business. Isn’t that what anti-trust laws were about? When one big corporation eats up its competitors like Pac Man, there is less competition and fewer choices. That certainly doesn’t benefit the consumer OR the workforce! (Even with low low prices on cheap, foregin-made cr@p…) History has shown us that unchecked greed trumps the concept of self-regulation, and we can all see who really pays the price.

It’s time to return this country to the small businessmen and innovators. When Americans can pursue their dreams outside of corporate domination of our economy via the government favors they purchase, THEN we can see a “free market” that really works. And yes, health care reform is a necessarsy part of that!

Perhaps the freedom of democracy allows us the privilege of being our own enemy. It allows us to make good decisions on our own BUT it also allows us to make bad decisions. If it didn’t, we would be like Pavlov’s dogs. Make a move only by command from our superiors.

“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

This is a big country. We cannot run the country with only mon & pop stores. It takes big business to run bigger things. You want electrical power run by a twinkies company? You want communication run by people with two cans and a string? YOu want research and development in medicine run by the local doctor? It is not possible. You want an automobile put together at the auto repair shop?

It is fine to have a “stay small philosophy” but when realism hits, it cannot be done in a country the size of the USA. The reality of stock owners should regulate big business. With that said, I don’t think we need to rely on the government to break these companies up. All corporations are in business to make money. They’re not here to make us feel good, or look good, they’re set up to make money. If people quit supporting their products or subsidiaries then they fail on their own without the government lifting a finger. The power is and has been in the hands of the people for the longest. We had the best telephone system in the world, but the federal government never stopped until it was broken into small pieces and we were left with all the wars between smaller companies, along with a truly balkanized system. We had a consistent supplier of natural gas, and the state government never stopped until that supplier was stripped of delivery powers, while we got “marketing” companies inserted between us and the natural gas, with the attendant additional expense.

Now we’re talking about breaking up large companies. Well, why doesn’t Congress enact some decent regulation to control the excesses, instead of punishing corporations for being successful? We need an SEC and a Fed with real power, instead of a pair of politicized lapdogs willing to go along with anything some corporation with big money wants to do. A guy reports Bernie Madoff to the SEC six times–six times–over a period of five years, providing proof of the impossibility of the gains Madoff was reporting. And what do Chris Cox and his gang of lickers do at the SEC? Nothing.

We need governmental powers to control the abuses of the corporations. We don’t need government to break up corporations merely because they are large. What we don’t need is for government to impose huge losses and expenses on the rest of us after corporations fail because of the excesses that the government has refused to control.

The ‘Bookman Political Indicator’ is a qualitative measure of just how badly the Obama Administration and the Democrat Party are doing their job. Conversely, the Indicator also measures the liklihood of the Republican Party picking up significant Congressional seats in the 2010 election cycle. The Indicator reflects the number of times Bookman espouses capitalist principals like less regulation and market discipline being superior to socialist intervention.

Bookman and his socialist Democrat Party are realizing what Smith, Hayek, Friedman and many others knew years ago. The capitalist system works. It has given us a standard of living and wealth unknown in history. The U.S. promotion of such principals has also led to the fall of communism in the former Soviet Union and China. Without a shot against either nation.

The Bookman Political Indicator is now closing in on 100 – the utter failure of socialism and any government’s dependence on it’s people. Ronald Reagan knew it well – Obama thinks he’s smarter than the Soviets and the Chinese. He ain’t.

The U.S. government now OWNS 80% of AIG whose share price has risen nicely over the past three months. The $130 billion in revolving credit extended by the federal government is scheduled to be paid back to the government WITH INTEREST. TARP funds extended to banks by the Bush Administration are also being returned to the federal government by major banks WITH INTEREST. The Bush Administration negotiated market-based solutions and the taxpayers were mostly spared any “bailout.” In fact, they should benefit from the increasing share prices of AIG and other the financial institutions.

Keep talking about free markets and less regulation, Bookman. It’s one of the few times you’ve made sense.

**Violate any 3 = no money and no party endorsement.**

Just like those stupid Republicans, stating whet they believe. Any Democrat could tell them the dangers in that. They should wait on the favorable political winds, tell the public that those are the issues they stand for and then just do as they please once they get in office.

It might not work as well for Republicans because conservatives are a lot less likely to tolerate obvious lies as the Democrats. Look at what Obozo promised, but look at how many of those promises were obvious lies, but the democrats still support him and make excuses like: “well look at what Bush did” to justify his lies.

I see the lack of oversight by Greenspan and Dugan and Congress along with the limitless greed of the bankers, investment bankers, and mortgage loan companies as the principal causes for the current recession. Gramm Leach didn’t cause the recession. AIG, for example, went under because they had an under-regulated portfolio of high risk CDS’s. The CDS’s went bad because greedy bankers and mortgage loan companies created interest-only ARMs and ninja loans because they made huge profits up front and then sold off the risky mortgages, which firms like Bear Stearns bought and then securitized. Allowing companies like Citigroup to merge banking, investment banking, and insurance under one umbrella wasn’t a proximate cause. International giants, like ING, did that a long time ago without financial system collapse.

AmVet,

I read the article and I have to say that Professor Ekelund should not mix politics with economics in his theoretical arguments. He says on one hand:
1. the problem created by the Bush Administration is too much government involvement with corporations,

but we should,

2. return to the gold standard (and be subject to this fine metal and whoevers mines it),
3. reinstate Glass-Stegal separating traditional and investment banking (why? because we’ve gotten too creative in financial services? huh).

Ekelund maybe a fine ivory tower economist but the real world demands much more coherency.

Microsoft is not too big to fail and is only lightly regulated compared to financial services. Get the government out of financial services and the companies that fail will be taken over by smarter bankers. It works.

Well, while you all are fussing and griping about big cos. President Obobo is getting ready to host his first state dinner for some towelhead from India. It just makes my guts growl.

First, it ain’t a dinner. It’s a supper. Dinner is something you eat around lunch time.

Second, if we got this much money to blow on a meal why don’t they give us some more tax cuts? Instead of spending money hand over fist.

Third, it can’t be that much fun. Just think, you’re setting there with some of the biggest big-shots in the world and you need to cut a big one. All you can do is set there and try and hold it in.

Anyhow, I was griping about all this to the missus the other night. She was on a diet again and kind of grumpy, I reckon. She’s bound and determined to get down to 315 before Christmas. Anyway, she up and told me I would never get invited to one of these suppers. Then she started carping about how I pour my coffee into a saucer to let it cool a little and then slurp it. And how I use the same fork to eat salad and meat and dessert. And then she took a swipe at my clip-on tie I wear to church.

So one of the things I’m grateful for this Thanksgiving is not getting invited to a state dinner. It would be miserable, I’m sure. Besides, they probly invite alot of Those People and librul Democrats. With that company I’d rather eat beans and weenies in my truck alone and do what I want.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.(If you don’t want a government to give or take anything, move to Somalia) When half of the people (Wallstreeters, major CEO’s/ major shareholders) get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half (the rest of us)is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for (i.e. worker productivity rises dramatically, yet real wages go DOWN), that is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.(You can only multiply wealth by concentrating it in the hands of the already wealthy, and then hope something trickles on you)”

Mike, Give me a tall ship and a star…

Sea Fever

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea’s face, and a gray dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way, where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

Well, had to (got to?) check out early last p.m. and the holiday stay-with-y’all bunch are out seeing the sights, whatever they are, of lovely not-yet-reconstructed, occupied Atlanta and I had a little time to come back and say hello to this bunch of malcontents…

I see we’re still arguing how to downsize the country–why not let’s just go ahead and accept the Compromise of 1850 boundaries and let the imperial colony south of the Mason-Dixon-Ohio River-36 30 go its own way and see what they can come up with, citizenship determined in accordance with international standars of born there, automatic. Those born elsewhere who want to stay and are already resident can sign up and be given the rights of natural born citizens. Those still not sure can have 5 years to make up their minds at which time they can become naturalized citizens if they choose and their properties remain untouched. Those choosing to go immediately can liquidate their properties under a certain value, say a million dollars, and leave. Those not willing to take citizenship still here after five years would have their properties confiscated and sent packing. Those wishing to move here from outside would be dealt with on a case-by-case immigrant basis.

The one criterion that would be non-negotiable would be that in registration of populations no race or religion category could be used.

Just an idea…

To the conservatives on this blog, i have made this point too many times: Corporate welfare (bailouts, tax breaks) are a much bigger part of the federal budget than individual welfare payments. In Fiscal Year 2008, for example, individual welfare payments totaled $47.5 billion dollars. The bailout package was more than 15 times that amount. Conservatives constantly tout the benefits of unregulated free markets. Then why do GM, AIG and others need to be bailed out by the government? This most recent recession and financial crisis is the result of 30 years of the supply-side economics started by Ronald Reagan. Instead of people making money by making things, too many people make money by manipulating other people’s money. The real thieves aren’t people on welfare, but people who cheat hard-working Americans out of their money (Ken Lay, Bernie Madoff, any number of corporate executives who fly to Washington on corporate jets while begging for taxpayer money). If conservatives were more informed, they wouldn’t constantly spout this nonsense about government vs. free markets.

There’s nothing like it. You get so used to the noise of the little diesel that is pushing you out of the harbor, but when the sails open up and the engine is killed, there is just something about those sounds of the ocean with no motors that is very alien and very familiar at the same time.

I love the outer Abacos, where the water is crystal clear and only about 20-40 feet deep so you see all sorts of BIG sea creatures running along beside your boat. Then you put in to places like Hopetown http://www.visithopetown.com/gallery.html
or Green Turtle Cay
http://www.go-abacos.com/cocobay/aerials-1-12-7/GreenTurtleAerial-12.jpg
and hang at some little bar until time to go back out to the boat.

Yes y’all, the ocean. Magnificent sun rises and sunsets. When the oceans gods are calm, the seas are like glass. Flying fish will jump right onto your ship and become dinner. Dolphins play tag at the bow, surfing in the wake. The tips of the waves glisten and reflect the sunlight or moonlight like a Kaleidoscope.

But when the ocean Gods are angry, the wind, the waves, the very depths themselves try to crush you. At that time, when your ship is being tossed, you raise your fist and shout, “not this time.” “We will prevail”. But you fear the power of the storm. Then dawn comes and the seas have lessened and you realize you have been tested and pronounced…Sailor. G-d bless the oceans.

Sorry for waxing poetic, but I do miss the seas…

“To the conservatives on this blog, i have made this point too many times: ”

Apparently this is your pet spiel, as you are brining this up out of nowhere.

“Corporate welfare (bailouts, tax breaks) are a much bigger part of the federal budget than individual welfare payments.”

“Tax breaks” are part of the federal budget? What “tax breaks” are you talking about?

“In Fiscal Year 2008, for example, individual welfare payments totaled $47.5 billion dollars. The bailout package was more than 15 times that amount.”

This action was supported by liberals too and is defended to this day by the Obama admin who provided much of this bailout. Don’t try to pin the bailouts on mean old conservatives.

” Conservatives constantly tout the benefits of unregulated free markets.”

No conservatives support some regulation. Conservatives oppose over-regulation.

“Then why do GM, AIG and others need to be bailed out by the government? ”

How did lack of regulation have anything to do with GM’s demise. Be specific.

“This most recent recession and financial crisis is the result of 30 years of the supply-side economics started by Ronald Reagan.”

This is a very simplistic and partisan explanation. You seem to forget the role that Carter and Clinton played in deregulation and are ignoring that massive burden that our entitlements are placing on our economy.

“Instead of people making money by making things, too many people make money by manipulating other people’s money.”

And why are you blaming conservatives for this. You do know that Obama raised a ton more form Wall Street than McCain did, right?

“The real thieves aren’t people on welfare, but people who cheat hard-working Americans out of their money (Ken Lay, Bernie Madoff, any number of corporate executives who fly to Washington on corporate jets while begging for taxpayer money).”

Let me know if you ever find anyone who disagrees with you about corporate crooks. BTW: Madoff was a huge Democrat fund raiser, so again blaming this on conservatives is silly.

“If conservatives were more informed, they wouldn’t constantly spout this nonsense about government vs. free markets.”

Hmm. Let’s see if you can respond to my questions before you start sneering about who is informed.

When a democracy gets to the point a 60/40 vote leaves 60 million voters on the losing side, it can’t function. We are definitely at a point where the country is so big and the needs and wishes of the electorate are so diverse that the government can’t really represent the people or get any meaningful legislation through.

Take the socialist bailouts out of the numbers and corporate welfare is still a massive, thoroughly corrupted boondoggle paid for by taxpayers.

The exact numbers are almost impossible to calculate but direct subsidies alone are about 65 billion dollars. EVERY year.

Boeing, Xerox, IBM, Motorola, Dow Chemical, General Electric, and MANY others have received untold millions in taxpayer-funded benefits through programs like the Advanced Technology Program and the Export-Import Bank.

And don’t forget about poor ADM which gets mountains of cash from the federal crop subsidy programs.

These giveaways and other “sales” at giveaway prices of the sovereign people’s assets to corporations by Uncle Sam is a national disgrace…

Taxpayer money went in the front door at AIG, and immediately flowed out the back door to Goldman. Tiny Tim the Tax Cheat forced AIG to pay off Goldman at 100 cents on the dollar, when AIG had already agreed with Goldman that 40 cents on the dollar was all they would get. The taxpayer got shafted by Tiny Tim and his Tiny crooked brain, but then again we know what he is, now don’t we? A New York City crook.

I agree that I am sickened by the “too big to fail” cop-out. There is no such thing in a healthy capitalistic economy. What happened when Pan-Am imploded and everyone was saying “they’re too big to fail”? They failed and others stepped in to take their place. That is the way it is supposed to work. Other big companies have fallen but capitalism has corrected itself time and time again.

Don’t think Obama will do anything about it because he is owned and operated by General Electric and George Soros both of who stand to make big money if his socialistic programs are put in place. The expect payment for their support of his campaign last year.

His performance at Woodstock was great (though it was probably fueled by a few stimulants of some kind but hey, who cares?). I think what he was saying when he said, “tax the rich, feed the poor, till there are no, rich no more” he was rebelling about the legendary high tax rates in England. He also said, “tell me where is sanity?”. He certainly thrived off of the money he was making under capitalism and he deserved to be payed well because he was an excellent entertainer. He was not some kind of marxist poet, just a person trying to make sense of the madness. Not much has changed I guess.

This is an enormous case of organized scientific fraud, but it is not just scientific fraud. It is also a criminal act. Suborned by billions of taxpayer dollars devoted to climate research, dozens of prominent scientists have established a criminal racket in which they seek government money-Phil Jones has raked in a total of £13.7 million in grants from the British government-which they then use to falsify data and defraud the taxpayers. It’s the most insidious kind of fraud: a fraud in which the culprits are lauded as public heroes. Judging from this cache of e-mails, they even manage to tell themselves that their manipulation of the data is intended to protect a bigger truth and prevent it from being “confused” by inconvenient facts and uncontrolled criticism.-RCP

There were people here but of course they didn’t know they were here. They had to be discovered before they realized they were here. ;-)

And on a similar subject, I’ve always been amazed at Thomas Jefferson and Lewis and Clark and the Expedition. These men were educated and quite intelligent but it never dawned on them that the various tribes they met might have their own views on things and their own self-interest at heart. In hindsight that’s a pretty naive view. I think maybe that’s why the French seemed to get along better with the Indians; they viewed them as trading partners whereas the Spanish viewed them as people to be conquered and the English viewed them as people in the way of westward expansion.

Of course the various tribes didn’t always see eye to eye either. I guess the moral of the story is people can always find a way to justify abusing other people. Been going on since Cain and Abel.

Hillbilly– One of the untold stories of American history is that of the South and the development of the Mixed Blood cultural milieu. Unlike the rest of the country, the Southeast from day one had a distinct character with intermarriage between the Indigenous people and the European and African elements. You will note that among the posters here there is a much higher awareness of Indian issues among the Southern posters and many, if not most, acknowledge with pride their Indian ancestry, fully aware of which side and which great-grandma or grandpa it was, though the textbook version has the red blood disappear completely with the Removals…and it was those areas with a French colonial past that the mixed bloods reached the highest levels of acceptance and got the best “deals” during Removals…

This is true and I’m of the opinion you should be proud of what you are, no matter your heritage. I’ve never found any direct ancestory in my line, going back many generations, but some of their siblings did marry into the Cherokee line. My ancestors did work along side them, trade with them, and were friends with them. The story here is that in the 1820’s-30’s around here, when there was funeral, it would be attended by about a 50/50 mix of settlers and Cherokees.

Many of the Cherokees used to come back here and visit for several weeks from Oklahoma as late as the early 1900’s. I heard a story (can’t remember the family name) of a young boy sitting by the fire with his family one night. He heard someone hollering outside in a strange tongue. He didn’t know what was going on and suddenly his Dad jumped up and started hollering back in the same tongue. His Dad opened the door and it was a group of Cherokees that he had known before the removal, coming back to visit.

We could probably write a volume of textbooks abouut what isn’t in textbooks. Since it’s coming up we could start with Thanksgiving and proceed on to what I view as the myth of our “Puritan” heritage. Don’t know about you but none of my ancestors were Puritans, even though the first ones got here in 1610 and the last ones were here by the mid 1700’s. All were here before the Revolution but none were Puritans or even lived near any.

Hillbilly–

If you want a whale of a read on the interaction between the Cherokee and the whites, go look into Sam Houston’s story…he lived as a young man among them, spoke the language fluently, often dressed in Cherokee style, married a Cherokee woman and when President of the Texas Republic, addressed Congress in Cherokee and during Removals, conducted treaties with the Cherokee and Choctaw people to bring them to Texas and a considerable number took him up on it…

Under the terms of Article 14 of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, one third of the citizens of the Choctaw Nation chose to remain in Mississippi and become citizens of the United States. The current governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour, is a descendent of Greenwood Leflore, who negotiated the treaty on behalf of the Choctaw. It is of note that those Choctaw who stayed made up some 30% of the “white” population of Mississippi in the next census…

At the time of the Dawes Roll, only 20% of those allowed to enroll as citizens of the Five Civilized Tribes were considered “pure bloods.”

Hillbilly–all were of Mixed Blood..like you, I have no Indian blood in my direct line, but I’m by no means the first generation to marry one! One branch of the Nix family intermarried with the Cherokee and were deported during Removal. On the Dawes Roll, there are some 20 of them registered and two have Cherokee given names and there among them is Robert E. Lee Nix, enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation! In another line, an intermarried couple chose to go to Oklahoma and five of them served under Watie in the Wah-uh. They and their descendents were not allowed to register under the Dawes Roll…

Step 1: fire Timothy Geithner. That idiot couldn’t manage money from a kid’s lemonade stand.

Step 2: forget all this health care crapola fiasco for now and concentrate on a way to get small businesses to hire people; tax cuts and incentives for small businesses might be a good place to start.

Step 3: a way to test out the “too large to fail” concept would be to let one fail and see what happens; my guess is that everything would pretty much go along and competitiors would fill in the holes. Taking over an industry to be managed by govt is INSANE, they cannot even run their own shop, much less a real economic business for profit.

Step 4: try reading some of this crap you pass as bills into law before suddenly starting to enact them, and only then find out how it is really working.

That’s it.

Everyone have an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday, I know I am.

Afraid To Kill

‘Fighting’ terror with wishful thinking

By Ralph Peters

It’s not true that the only good terrorist is a dead terrorist. Even dead terrorists aren’t good. But at least they’re dead. And that helps. But political correctness has possessed Washington. It’s so bad that even Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who’s done a great job in many other respects, parrots the cliché that “we can’t kill our way out of this.”

Well, folks, there’s no other way out of this all-or-nothing struggle with fanatics. Three thousand years of history teach that there’s no alternative – none – to killing fanatics in large numbers when your enemies are ablaze with religious zeal.

What Gates and countless others really mean is that we’re unwilling to kill our way out of this assault on our civilization. So the terrorists keep on killing us.

We tell ourselves that one more charm offensive, one more inept aid program, one more surge of troops who aren’t allowed to fight will persuade terrorists on a murderous mission from their god to lay down their arms and run for alderman.

We refuse to see the world through terrorist eyes. Instead, we superimpose liberal-arts-faculty values on bloodthirsty zealots, asking what we’ve done to make them so angry.

The result? We grant captured terrorists more rights and better treatment than nonviolent offenders in a US county jail. We cater to them at the gentrified prison at Guantanamo (yet the global media insist that Gitmo’s just a big torture chamber).

We tell ourselves we’ll impress our enemies with our humanitarianism. But how many Gitmo prisoners have turned pacifist or expressed regrets? If you were convinced that you were doing God’s will, would you be budged by a captor who gives you priority health care, a religiously correct diet, special worship privileges and free legal counsel? Allah has made his enemies weak . . .

The laws of war provide for the battlefield execution of illegal combatants – those who refuse to wear uniforms or identifying insignia or who commit atrocities. Instead, we give them flu shots before American citizens can get them.

When a madcap ideologue such as Attorney General Eric Holder tells Congress we mustn’t be afraid to try terrorists in our judicial system, he gets it exactly wrong. The terrorists believe we’re afraid to kill them. And they’re right.

So we’ll get the upcoming propaganda bonanza of the trial of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed and his terrorist barbershop quartet. And we’ll squander hundreds of millions of dollars on special security precautions in Manhattan. The inevitable outcome? We’ll make heroes of the terrorists throughout the Muslim world.

Meanwhile, down in Texas, terrorist assassin Maj. Nidal Hasan’s lawyer is already making a mockery of our judicial system. Hasan will become a terrorist icon, too.

And even if Hasan, KSM and the boys are all convicted of multiple counts of premeditated murder, they won’t be executed for many years to come – if ever.

How does this deter fanatical enemies? Our insistence on treating terrorism as shoplifting that got a little out of hand does not protect Americans.

Terrified of the new global reality, Washington refuses to accept that we’re no longer dealing with the political terrorists of the 20th century – some of whom could, indeed, be won over or bought off. We’re now dealing with religious madmen hungry for an apocalypse. And our government and the media scramble to deny that Islam has anything to do with it. The poor terrorists just have grievances.

If Khalid Sheik Mohammed has a heart attack during his trial, he’ll get better health care than most Post readers. Paralyzed from the waist down, Maj. Hasan will get priority on rehab treatment over our vets from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bring terrorists to Manhattan? They should never have made it to Gitmo.

Attempting to play down Mr Ainsworth’s remarks, No 10 and the Ministry of Defence last night made a statement backing Mr Obama’s deliberations.

It stated: “It is right that Nato partners have taken the time to review next steps in the campaign. These are hugely important issues that rightly need careful and detailed consideration.”

In an article in this newspaper today Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, claims that the reason public opinion is switching against the war in Afghanistan is because of the lies told in the run up to the Iraq war.

Mr Clegg also calls for a new approach to Afghanistan from the US. He writes: “We now need a complete change of strategy, which we still hope President Obama will announce next week.”

I mean, vicarious soldiering in one thing, but at least get a freakin’ job if you’re gonna complain about the gov’t…and maybe eat a carrot now and again…, what with the way they got to play war in Iraq without actually getting shot at, so maybe they do the same thing with ‘hard work’?

But then, why actually work hard, when all you have to do is pretend to?

We cannot run $trillion deficits every year forever. It just won’t work. And as soon as the Fed steps off the gas and/or Congress steps off the stimulus we will see this recovery for the hot air it really is.

Yet, in spite of all those generous assumptions, no double dip recession, no second recession, high rates of job growth and falling participation rates all the way through 2020, and unemployment peaking at 11.6% not 13%, the best I can do is suggest the unemployment rate will be over 10% all the way through 2015 and never dip below 8% all the way out through the end of 2020.

“On average, the economists don’t expect unemployment to fall below 6% until 2013.”

It could take until 2014-15 before we see a 5% handle on unemployment again,” said Diane Swonk at Mesirow Financial.”

I read a book once about what would have happened if the South had won. Two things were interesting. One, slavery would have ended by itself as technology improved enough to make it unprofitable, and two, the most surprising, North America would have been fierce enemies with England for helping the South win. They would have gone to war against England in both World Wars, if they had happened. It was a strange read.

He told me his plan – to become a language expert/translator – and I asked him if this was HIS idea. (I was slightly concerned that his mother and her ex-Army officer hubby had “suggested” this path.)

Clinton: 1.789067 in Y2K.

A simple idea that helps in our current situation relative to Afghanistan would be start the draft or raise taxes on the wealthiest to pay for the war.

It appears those who opposes health care reform base their opposition on perceived costs. The question now is, should we pay the cost in treasure and lives to prop up a known corrupt government, or should we pay our treasure on upgrading our health care system?

ONLY when there is a CiC with an R after his name do the heroic conned pound their chests and scream their vicarious bloodlust. (Remember Kosovo?)

Health care reform is needed because we can not afford to continue with our current system.

The difference is in the approach. To answer your question above, what health care companies bring to the equation is a system that over 80% of Americans are happy with. So why blow that system up?

Fix the PROBLEMS, Jackie.

I’ve said this all along. Even Mrs. G. at one point supported this plan.

1. Enact tort reform to lower malpractice insurance costs and end excessive and needless defensive testing for simple issues.
2. Allow insurance companies to offer their products across state lines.
3. Encourage insurance companies to offer group policies towards job classifications such as real estate agents or auto workers, rather than by employer.
4. Expand Medicare coverage for ONLY those people with existing pre-conditions that private companies won’t take and for those below the poverty level that cannot buy insurance, but require that a 3/4 majority be put in place to keep Congress from expanding that pool when it suits their re-election fancies. That would be the extent of a government option.

Yep, the 101st Chairborne, the GOP, Republicans, “conservatives”, local nut sacks…

They all live in a world of supposition, “this” will happen when Obozo does that, “this” will happen if obozo doesn’t do that…

Not a single solitary example will materialize on how Obozo’s actions or policies adversely affect any one of their lives. Some of the local nut sacks literally never see the light of day, so it’s hard to imagine how they manage to get a true picture of local, national, or world events, yet they postulate here all day long about the world as they see it, or rather as it’s described to them by their masters.

The problem with their clairvoyance is that it didn’t seem to work at all from the years 2000 to 2008, worked for 6 years before that, and it’s worked ever since Jan 20, but there’s a large gap there in between those periods of (in)accurate predictions made…

And consumers started spending again in October as their incomes grew modestly — another encouraging signal for the budding economic recovery.

The number of people filing first-time claims for jobless benefits fell by 35,000 to 466,000, the Labor Department said Wednesday. That was the fewest since the week of Sept. 13, 2008. And it was far better than the 500,000 economists had expected.

If…of course an independent South would have freed the slaves…it was after all very much a country in the mainstream of Western Civilization. My school kids just finished their own research into when slavery was abolished in the New World–Cuba, Puerto Rico and Brazil were the last, Brazil in the 1880s. It was a planned and gradualist process there, with age limitations in order to prevent the slave owners from not taking the responsibility for providing for the aged. There were also compensation provisions for the owners and provisions of land for the emancipated. The South would have been in this line of thought. The “sticking point” on abolition for the slave owners had always been the dollar value involved, the pocketbook, as always, trumping morality,

It’s obvious to me that the corporal body goes to sheol, the grave, as the Bible instructs, josef. And what about the “spirit”? If we speak of “eternal life”, it can only be in the spiritual sense, of course, which is what most “mainstream” Christians believe.

Where I part company with the the mainstream is in the understanding of the word “spirit”. By definition, a spirit, like God, is non-corporal. As such, any “personification” of said spirits is inaccurate, and silly. I think the Jews have the right idea by forbidding the attachment of ANY human word to God.

Huge a/k/a AmVet:

I post one comment, an occasional two at Wooten’s daily. Ain’t hangin’ around there either. Sorry to disappoint you once again.

Here’s one for somebody, but I don’t know who. When the name game was played, I wasn’t shocked by how quickly some liberal went looking for an address. Came back and reported the vicinity.

Had I witnessed that type of mistake made by a liberal, I would have simply let it go. I have no doubt that any conservative on this board would have.

But liberals? They are an obsessive bunch.

The address mentioned? Andy’s! Very much like Kamchak mentioning how I had inadvertently exposed critical data about myself online (not true, but it didn’t stop him from trying to capitalize on a lie). Then, of course, there was the individual who let her obsession overwhelm her when she decided to place a subscription I had at risk. Could have been very costly for me…not her…online defeat was her goal.

Looking at all the bikini clad babes, I see these cards with all sorts of hunks in thongs, etc.

So I said to a friend, “Hey look they have postcards for girls too!”

He looked at me and said, “Those aren’t for the girls”.

“As for the eternal, I am kinda drawn to the traditional Choctaw belief…we have two souls, the “shilup” and the “shilombish.” The shilup is that part of you that goes on forever, released from the body and earthly concerns. The shilombish is that part of you that hangs around to take care of unfinished business.”

Again, josef, my quandary from a “scientific” standpoint is that spirits are by definition, non-corporal. And since spirits contain no “matter”, it is impossible for us to even think about them. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist, just that we have to be extremely cautious when we make the attempt to discuss them.

And how can we speak of something that technically speaking doesn’t “exist” in the normal sense, yet stay within acceptable scientific boundaries?? To that, I say, God is all around us. God is the “spirit” which organizes bosons and fermions into atomic particles, atomic particles into atoms, atoms into molecules, molecules into organic compounds, organic compounds into living cells, living cells into living tissues, living tissues into living organs, living organs into living creatures.

Bruno, in Dan Brown’s latest book he talks of a science, started with an “N” but he claims it’s a real science. If that’s true and what he says in the book is true, then the soul is a measurable unit. when it leaves the body, the body weighs less. Interesting to consider…

Me? Don’t care. The only thing we are ever sure of in this life is the instant we call “now”. All before now is future and all behind now is past.

But is the soul is a living thing separate from the body? I believe so. Does it go to “Heaven”? I’ll find out soon enough…and if there is, then my only hope is that if I have been good enough, my slice of Heaven will be a certain little valley in Kentucky.

And a special side sermon for @@:

Accepting that the story of Adam and Eve is allegorical in nature, I’ve often wondered about the true meaning of Eve eating the Forbidden Fruit. Why is this an integral part of the Bible story?

In most churches, this is presented as being the Original Sin, for which mankind will eternally be punished for. Billions of people now saying, “damn that woman, she messed it up for all of us”.

I take a different view, however. The tree she ate from was the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Knowledge of good and evil, in secular terms, might be termed “moral discrimination”, which we humans believe we are uniquely capable of, which distinguishes us from other animals. So rather than viewing the awakening of Adam and Eve as a mistake or an evil, disobedient choice, I view it as an “evolutionary” step forward, one pre-ordained by the Creator.

Maybe josef or even a fundy can weigh in on this, but the way it’s been presented to me is that men and women simply have different roles in life. Men traditionally are assigned to leadership roles. Had some errands to run for the holidays.

@Dave R.

“Fix the PROBLEMS, Jackie.

That would be the extent of a government option.”

1. Ask Texas about tort reform. It does not help in any way in resolving the issue. It only provides more money to the health insurance carriers. Saves 1/4/ of 1%, at most.

2. Health insurance IS offered across state lines. Where areCIGNA, United Health Care and other providers located?

3. Encourage health care companies? Next comment.

4. Your proposal does nothing to reduce the cost of health care insurance. Without a large pool that takes all comers, the health care companies can choose whomever they want in order to maximize their profits.

Ask yourself, why do yo pay your premium to a health care company; they did no work to relieve you of your suffering?

In my opinion, your proposals would make the situation worse than it is presently.

Religion gives some people peace. But it is no more crazy than some of the “Earth Concerts” I have seen. When Melissa Ethridge starts talking about how much she believes in the ex-bible pounder Al Gore, the idea of a big man in the sky that loves everyone doesn’t seem nearly as crazy.

And why don’t you have the same problem with Astrology? Or do you? I never hear anyone talking about how crazy that idea is. Yes, I know: Nancy Reagan. Of course Nancy was never the president and every straight guy knows about the craziness that sometimes we all must face.

“There’s a lot of problems with that story, but the tree is not the problem. Where Cain and Able found a wife? That’s a problem.”

Which means that Adam and Eve weren’t the “first” humans in the sense of being the only Homo sapiens in existence on Earth at that time. I view the whole Adam=First Man, Eve=First Woman as meaning that Adam and Eve were the first Enlightened Humans who had the power of moral discrimination. Taking things out of a “literal” context and putting them into an “allegorical” context is the only way to understand the stories, IMO.

BTW, I”m sure you realize that Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 are two distinct Creation stories, with significant, irreconcilable differences?

**Cain and Abel took wives from among the women of men…*

Whatever. I mean really I see it all as a parable. God is nature. Nature is God. Earthquakes are caused by God? Earthquakes are caused by nature. Do we have an afterlife? If that is the natural order of things, then yes we do. We will all find out some day. Does our actions here decide how we spend that afterlife? I know that Karma is real, so I can see that happening.

The settlers at Jamestowne had a feast to give thanks for surviving the Starving Time over 10 years before the Pilgrims ever landed at Plymouth. There were thanksgiving type celebrations among the Spanish people in what is now the southwestern U. S. before the Jamestowne settlers arrived and of course many Indian tribes throughout the Americas had been having feasts to give thanks for a long time. So the First Thanksgiving wasn’t really the First Thanksgiving at all.

Y’all–this is true of G’burg. Another sidelight on the difference between them and us…Lee
demanded that any requisitions from the Yankee population be paid for at fair market value–C*nfederate currency, of course! However, those bills that can be reasonably verified as having come from Lee’s army are highly prized and fetch a high price among aficionados!

The story is told that General Cleland, one of my own C’federate heroes, during the Battle of Franklin, paused in his ride to give his boots to a barefoot soldier, saying “where I’m going, I won’t need them.” He was killed in the battle. Ima Gonna could learn a lot from this man.

On the subject of lack of shoes among Confederates:

The retreat from the Battle of Nashville was conducted in sleet and ice. According to many first hand accounts the ice on the roads was stained with the blood from barefooted soldiers.

General Cleburne (a native of Ireland by the way) was one of five Confederate generals killed or mortally wounded at the Battle of Franklin. In my view, the ill-fated charge that Gen. John Bell Hood ordered there is one of the biggest horrors in a war that was filled with horrors.

Cleburne was also gay, and quite openly so, and was one of only two C’federate generals to adopt Judah Benjamin’s 1861 proposal to free any slave and their families who would serve in the Army…the other was Nathan Bedford Forrest who freed 40 of his, men who rode with him til the end.

I knew there was a shoe factory in Gettysburg. My lessons didn’t point out that was the reason the Confederate troops were headed there. Gale one of the ironies of the war, to me at least, was that General Longstreet openly advocated for a defensive war from the beginning. Arguing, and correctly, that the Noth had more men and material. Anyone who studies warfare knows that to take a defensive position from the enemy, you had to have at least three times the manpower and even then it would be a close thing. General Longstreet was to become one of Lee’s superior generals, but even at Gettysburg he argued against Pickett’s Charge. If Lee had listened, many confererate live’s would have been saved.

Hillbilly Deluxe

the other was Nathan Bedford Forrest who freed 40 of his, men who rode with him til the end.

And of those 40, the one in charge of the rest, Jerry, was referred to by the others as “the General”.

Interesting story, Bedford Forrest had one horse, King Phillip, that was his favorite of all his war time mounts. He rode this horse through many battles, in spite of having had 30 horses shot out from under him, and King Phillip survived the war. King Phillip developed a hatred for the color blue and would snort, paw at the ground, and try to charge, if he wasn’t restrained, if he saw blue.

One day after the war Bedford Forrest and the General were putting up fence posts in a field and King Phillip was grazing unattended. Along came a detachment of Union occupation troops riding down the road. Upon seeing them King Phillip immediately charged the troops. One of the Union men struck at the horse and Jerry, the General, ran out to the horse’s aid and order was restored.

In my view, if Forrest had ever been given command of the Army of Tennessee, expecially early on, things would have been a lot different in the Western Theatre.

Gale
You posted that South might have been better off fighting a guerilla war, and I would tend to agree with that. Most of the high ranking Generals on both sides were West Pointers though, and I think this idea was foreign to them.

Yes, it is true that the initial foray into Gettysburg was to search for shoes. However, it was not for shoes for Lee’s entire army. Rather, it was a single brigade of around 300 men, and the search was for shoes for that brigade. The brigade commander had Lee’s blessing. It was just an accident of history that the brigade encountered a fairly strong Union force passing through, withdrew, and reported the existence of the force to Lee. The brigade commander even stated his intention to return to Gettysburg the next day to accomplish his mission, but by that time Lee’s aggressiveness had taken control of the situation and even stronger Confederate forces were diverted to Gettysburg.

Gale, Shelby Foote wore a narritive trilogy “The Civil War” that is very good. He explains a whole lot about the reasons the started, economics, and ramifications involved. It’s easy to read and is a good primer. You would be amazed at how much Lincoln was like G.W. Bush (or visa versa) in the actions he took in the name of “preserving the Union”.
If you can find it, there was a PBS series on the book too…

I don’t know of any books that focus on the economics, although I’m sure there are some. As a starting point though, I’d recommend Shelby Foote’s 3 volume set, “The Civil War: A Narrative”. (Took me almost a year to read those by the way). Foote’s material is well researched and since he was such a talented writer, they don’t read like the typical history book.

When you read something in there about the economics that interests you, I’d suggest checking the bibliography and trying to find the source material to read. That works with pretty much any history. Just keep digging back and you’ll find more material.

No, I’ve never heard of that book. I do know that there was some ill will towards Longstreet after the war for his views on Gettysburg as well as for his advising Southerners to accept Union rule. There has been a great deal of discussion about his comments on accepting Union rule by various people, often using his stance to make a political point one way or another. If you read his book, “From Mannassas to Appomatox”, however, he makes the point that he advised Southerners to accept Union rule because at that point, they basically had no choice.

And a tad unrelated but one of the most interesting anecdotes from the war is about Union Gen. Sedgewick. His men were penned down by Confederate sharp shooters and he was trying to rally them. He said, “I’m ashamed of you, dodging that way”. Then he laughed and said, “They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance”. The next shot hit him under the eye and he was killed.

Longstreet was a traitor at worst, a self-serving hypocrite at best, in my opinion.

At least give Longstreet credit for strongly advising Lee against the attack on the center of the Union line. After Lee made the decision and issued the order, Longstreet didn’t have the heart even to utter a word when Pickett asked him if the charge should begin. The decimation of Pickett’s division and the loss of the battle at Gettysburg can’t be laid at Longstreet’s door.

I wouldn’t disagree with that. For generalship (if that’s a word) and as a military man I don’t find a lot of fault in Longstreet. It was his some of his actions after the war I’d be in disagreement with. Of course, I wasn’t there and I guess hindsight is 20-20.

Rewriting history for the sake of current political views is responsible for the confusion surrounding a certain religious text. I can see it now, a middle age Greek translator saying, “Oh! Josef, as a military mind and what I see as a realist, Longstreet was Lee’s best and should have been listened to. I know Lee had the utmost faith in his troops and thought that they were unbeatable, but If the south had adopted Longstreets strategy and fought a purely defensive war ala WWI, the North would, in my military mind, lost heart and sued for peace. The south also ran up against a new weapon at Gettysburg. The Spencer repeater carbine. The Calvary unit they ran up against had them. Longstreet might have been many things, but to me, he was one helluva strategist.

I don’t understand the moderation either. People who write history books only portray the negatives of all Southern troops. You never hear about the good things. Longstreet’s thought process would probably have changed the outcome of Gettysburg, but hindsight is 20-20 and I wasn’t there to see how things played out. Having walked and rode through Gettysburg, I wouldn’t have advised Pickett to march his men across that field either.

As far as Post-War Longstreet, I agree w/josef and Hillbilly, although I don’t think he would have been brought up on charges of treason for the same reason that most others were not. I believe once the fighting was done, those involved wanted to put it in the past as soon as possible.

As someone not afraid to swim against the tide for a better understanding of who we were so as to plot a more rationale course for where we want to go, I think you understand why I find such “moderation,” whatever the source, extremely telling as to what, for lack of a better word, is propagandization, much the same mentality which Goebbels and company used (and no, I’m not calling Jay a nazi, but I will certainly put the AJC in the camp of, if not der Sturmer, at least the Frankfurter Zeitung post 1939). It all reminds me of Buffy Ste. Marie’s “little wheel, spin and spin, big wheel turns around and around, blame the angels, blame the fates, teach your children who to hate…”

If there is anyone in American history who exeplifies learning from the past for a better future, it is the gentleman mentioned. They would be thrown asunder trying to comprehend John F. Harrison’s speech before the Mississippi legislature in 1890. Not one in a hundred have read Justice Harlan’s dissent in Plessy v Ferguson or know the first thing of the man’s life. Yet, these three men understood the concept of honor, dignity and integrity and, yes, swimming against the tide.

Geez, nothing! I never said this time that it was Jay and it matters very little to me as to who or what is in control. The verdict is in and it’s not just me saying so. I’ve passed this by a wide range of individuals, some who share my perspectives, some who do not. To a one they have seen the same pattern and it is a pattern pertinent to content. I have conscientously posted on a number of separate occasions using the strings of words in other contexts and there was no problem. I am by no means angry this time. It has turned into a fun thing and I am enjoying it. The frustration I might feel at the moment is more than paid back by the “heh-heh” I am getting elsewhere from this. There are other moderations which, while I might object, do not fit into so blatant a pattern and I can accept them. There are others which it is obvious what the problem is and, by and large, I have learned to get around them, the r word one being truly intriguing!

And, no, I don’t exactly “blame” Jay. As you well know, I kinda like him and will stand up for him in a New York minute when I think he’s being attacked unfairly. I appreciate his tolerance of our many different opinions on many different topics and the forum through which to discuss them. I have found him to be a man of wide and deep reading and a gentleman and a scholar.

As for the one today, there was no surprize and I could have pretty much gotten around it, too, but it would have been way too much effort.

So, again, geeze nothing. In the great cosmic scheme of things, it means very little. As an old friend put it, “it’s just another game to play while waiting for Armageddon.” :-)

Following is the Thanksgiving message from President Obama:

Feel free to read it and then tell me “Who” we are supposed to thank? Not one mention of God ………. truly sad.

“Tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day, Americans across the country will sit down together, count our blessings, and give thanks for our families and our loved ones.

American families reflect the diversity of this great nation. No two are exactly alike, but there is a common thread they each share.

Our families are bound together through times of joy and times of grief. They shape us, support us, instill the values that guide us as individuals, and make possible all that we achieve.

So tomorrow, I’ll be giving thanks for my family — for all the wisdom, support, and love they have brought into my life.

But tomorrow is also a day to remember those who cannot sit down to break bread with those they love.

The soldier overseas holding down a lonely post and missing his kids. The sailor who left her home to serve a higher calling. The folks who must spend tomorrow apart from their families to work a second job, so they can keep food on the table or send a child to school.

We are grateful beyond words for the service and hard work of so many Americans who make our country great through their sacrifice. And this year, we know that far too many face a daily struggle that puts the comfort and security we all deserve painfully out of reach.

So when we gather tomorrow, let us also use the occasion to renew our commitment to building a more peaceful and prosperous future that every American family can enjoy.

It seems like a lifetime ago that a crowd met on a frigid February morning in Springfield, Illinois to set out on an improbable course to change our nation.

In the years since, Michelle and I have been blessed with the support and friendship of the millions of Americans who have come together to form this ongoing movement for change.

You have been there through victories and setbacks. You have given of yourselves beyond measure. You have enabled all that we have accomplished — and you have had the courage to dream yet bigger dreams for what we can still achieve.

So in this season of thanks giving, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to you, and my anticipation of the brighter future we are creating together.

With warmest wishes for a happy holiday season from my family to yours,

President Barack Obama”

Well, good evening,.. I am just back from our Thanksgiving Serivce and it was a good one. Our pastor has a degree in history besides his Doctor of Divinity. so he throws in a lot of history. I am not good at reviews but he quoted early documents , one written by George Washington , about the country being founded upon God based principles. Americans had always drawn together in that feeling, if divided by other things. Now he feels that is lost and the bond between Americans is also lost . He reiterates that we have so much for which we can be thankful . So much, indeed.

I have hope there is enough “bond” left to keep up hanging together. But some days, I ,too, wonder.

But… I promise to be more cheerful! But wait a minute..

Bookman is no sweetheart. Sorry but I had runins with Mr. Bookman long before this blog started. I am accustomed to his twists and turns. Even this year he has asked me why I hate America. That was because I disagreed with him. He has mellowed a bit but I think he saw the tide turning at AJC and did a little turning himself. but nevermind. He wrote a nice little piece about his children and family. That scores a few points for him.

Well, that is a nice, fairly gentle view of Bookman. (Who am I to disagree with gentlman josef who can swing a mean blade and a basball bat!!)

I assume that newspaper editors can have ethics just like anybody else . From what I have heard we once had some in Atlanta who took the high road in journalism, not always the path they thought was popular.

Somewhere along the way, the AJC lost any resemblence to an honest, straight forward newspaper to its detriment., Most editors seemed biased. The readers knew it and did not like it. Changes were made but it is a hard time for newspapers. They are losing their popularity but I hope they don’t lose all their ethics. That is the worst loss of all.

Good night. Getting late. Have a fine day tomorrow. I am looking forward to a happy time with my big family. Makes a perfect Thanksgiving.

I’ve heard that there used to be a dirt track for auto racing there as well at one point.

Yes, it was a one mile dirt track. They ran there in the 40’s and 50’s. A few races were run there in the 60’s as well. They even ran some Indy car races there, I think. And the roller coaster there at the Fairgrounds was blown up at the end of Smokey and the Bandit II. I’ve still never had a roller coaster ride quite like riding that one.

If you like real country music, you’ll like this. If you appreciate a strong voice, you’ll appreciate the ending. I’ve seen him live and he still hits this note, everytime. I’ve seen ‘em all, Haggard, Jones, Conway, Vern Gosdin, and Gene Watson is as good as any of them live.

Most all progressive rock music has roots in “The Court of the Crimson Kings”, I think.

I leave this for y’all. It’s from a little known movie of the 80’s called “Local Hero”. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Dusty,

I agree with you. The problem is finding a Viking Kittie link that can be passed along. Does this one work?

It sounds a lot like the International Harvesters, whom he played with in 1984-85. I’m not sure if they had a studio release, but some of their videos still remain on youtube.

Enjoying the RG.

B, some of Jimi’s sweetest stuff ever recorded IMHO was his mellow stuff, like Castles….

This one from Cry of Love is also fine.

I had an 8-track of jazzy instrumentals that was great also. It was titled “Midnight Lightning” or something like that.

Beautiful.
