We can’t keep going on like this….

Sooner or later, the piper demands to be paid:

From the NY Times:

With the national debt now topping $12 trillion, the White House estimates that the government’s tab for servicing the debt will exceed $700 billion a year in 2019, up from $202 billion this year, even if annual budget deficits shrink drastically. Other forecasters say the figure could be much higher.

In concrete terms, an additional $500 billion a year in interest expense would total more than the combined federal budgets this year for education, energy, homeland security and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The potential for rapidly escalating interest payouts is just one of the wrenching challenges facing the United States after decades of living beyond its means.

NOTE: I’m on vacation this week, so posting will be a little lighter than normal. As you might have noticed….

Well, I’m like all the other godly Conservatives on here. Tell me what it’s going to do to my personal bank account and taxes and I’ll tell you what we need to do. But you just can’t leave me stuck with all this information about the debt and not tell me how it’s going to hit me in the wallet.

Otherwise, I’m glad to see USinUK back from vacation. She gets a little wild-eyed and radical at times, but she’s worth a read. It’s alot better than seeing mike put on his hissy-fit about bigots and such.

War tax? I totally agree. I think it should be a seperate transaction every time you buy anything – even a Coke from the store – not just some added on percent like sales tax, but a seperate transaction – that way you see it, you hold the receipt, and you know how much you spent. In other words – you own it.

Cut government spending across the board to include subsidies of all kinds unless necessary for national security.

Increase import tarriffs to make it cheaper for companies to make goods here. Maybe that would lowre unemployment and increase the tax base.

Short term tax increase that expires once the deficit is lowered to a managable amount and resets tax rates that are equitable across all income levels.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is about the end of any nation. Are Minorities Getting Enough Out of the Stimulus?

Powell thinks it’s only fair that more stimulus money finds its way to minority communities, since much of today’s economic disaster can be traced to those areas being lavished with subprime mortgages. Despite recovery.org, the federal website designed for tracing stimulus outlays, Powell argues, “We need to put how this is playing out under a larger magnifying glass, make it more transparent.” If not, he warns, “we’ll have the irony of the first black President presiding over the greatest economic restructuring in decades, but it could actually end up worsening the racial disparity.”
So why is this happening, you libs might ask. It’s because democrats have to leave ‘em wanting…..coming back to the voting booth over and over again…..less power for their punch.

It’s how dems have always operated.

A guy in line with his wife and two other couples (he said the guys went to curry favor) came over and said “when we walked up and saw you with that line of women we all said “now that guy has it figured out!” Actually, I didn’t, but I’ll take the compliment.

Laurent getting ripped apart was gratifying. Dakota Fanning is chilling. And forget about avoiding the squeals by going when teenagers are in school. The 40-something women screaming when Jacob ripped off his shirt were quite irritating, but funny.

@@, Do you actually think the children in today’s schools will be able to right the ship of government? Or are you refering to the generation after that?

I really must respectfully disagree with Dr. Adrian Rogers. If all wealth is accumulated in the hands of a few then the many will see no value in what they do regardless of who they do it for. This country has always had wealth redistribution. It might have been under a different name but it has always been there.

“everyone, with very, very few exceptions, pays a very significant portion of their income in NHS tax”

um. not really. as I’ve stated before in other discussions, my income tax burden here is the same as it was in the US …

for anyone interested, here are the rates: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm

About 90% of poverty is self-inflicted. Main reason being having children you can’t afford to raise. These people need to take responsibility for their sexual pleasures.

USinUK, Now if my HC was included in my tax burden or I ended up paying even the same amount with my HC deduction today included, but we ended up with single payer, I would be happy. I would not even complain –much– about the amount my employer is no longer spending for my HC that the don’t put back in my pocket.

Busy morning, no time to welcome back our USinUK.

Did MIL’s inconvenient backbone(s) prevent the Wales frolic you’d had planned?

As to the original topic… danged if I know how best to turn this leaky ship around.

Gale:

As long as the democrats promote their brand of school reform….more money for less quality….it could take MORE than two generations.

With Obama’s government mandated coverage, many of the college students who supported his CHANGE are starting to see the writing on the wall.

Who knows? The revolt may come sooner than expected. It’ll be one of a libertarian nature.

We would all say that, if we were being honest.

hey dB –

“Did MIL’s inconvenient backbone(s) prevent the Wales frolic you’d had planned?”

it prevented nearly everything we had planned.

except we did manage to see the stage version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s before things escallated … it was okay – true to the original novella rather than the movie. The bigger thrill was seeing Ian Hislop on the walk to the theater. Now, he’s cool.

I agree with that. With one side convinced Obama is the answer, and the other side convinced Palin has the answer, we need the “silent majority” to find a sane person willing to run who they can get behind. Boy, that is a tall order!

Normal, 11:52, I remember reading that when I looked up Alexis De Tocqueville some time ago in connection with another thread. I don’t recall that he said anything about what might happen when the republic failed.

Wasn’t that link for their version of Federal income tax, when what we’re discussing is an additional tax for National Health, at this link?

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/nic.htm

Can you imagine any politician, let alone Democrat, proposing an equivalent WEEKLY tax for lower income people? Ninety-five pounds a week? 4949 pounds a year? $8,211 a year? For the lower tier? Are you kidding me?

I know, it’s not enough to simply translate the pounds to dollars. It’d be more meaningful to translate the income of those at the lower and middle tier, then make the NHS tax as a percentage of that.

Which, I’d guess, would actually make the equivalent American amount more than that $8211 for the lower tier.
As I said, no politician here would dare do that.
