Fox poll says Obama disapproval rising; bow was OK

Fox News is trumpeting the results of its latest poll, showing that President Obama’s job approval rating has fallen to its all-time low of 46 percent, matching his disapproval rating.

A few days ago, Fox was also trying to make a big deal about Obama’s bow to the emperor of Japan. The poll suggests that seed fell on barren ground.

The question:

When the president of the United States is traveling overseas, do you think it is appropriate for him to bow to a foreign leader if that is the country’s custom or is it never appropriate for the president to bow to another leader?

The response:

Yes, bow when it is the proper custom: 67 percent
No, it is never appropriate: 26 percent
Democrats: Yes, 84 percent; Never, 9 percent
Republicans, Yes, 53 percent; Never 40 percent
Independents: Yes, 62 percent; Never, 30 percent

Your headline should have read, All polls show Obama’s dissapproval rising, although it could have been phrased differently. Polls lst week showed dissapproval rates from 42%-48%.

Goons: Having lived in Japan for 5 years, I can assure you that one DOES absolutely…bow! For all the reasons that you are too ignorant to grasp. Culture. Courtesy. Respect. Tradition. And sooo much more. (We have no traditions, courtesies, respect, culture, etc., here in the U.S. A reason why we are properly known for decades as “UGLY

Thinking a bit deeper–

I guess the Pubbies decided to go full-tilt boogie with their attacks on the White House, their fealty to party unity uber alles, and subsequent determination to obstruct any kind of meaningful reform legislation and nitpick every last decision or (literal) gesture from Obama because they figured that by driving up Obama’s negatives they could win by tearing down. No other reason than that–it’s just about winning and they figured it’s their best shot.

If there’s nothing personal, just business, ok. I get that.

But in the back of my mind I keep wondering if there’s some interplanetary “Biggest A-Hole” contest world leaders are privy to, that we groundlings aren’t allowed to know about.

Well, he should never of bowed. A good American would of stood up straight on his tiptoes and maybe give a finger to boot. We’re better than everybody else. Anybody can see that.

I’m just so ashamed of this illegal President. We need My President back. He would of said something like “How you doing, Emp?” like Babe Ruth said “How you doing, King?” back when he was innerduced to the King of England. And My President would of cut off federal funds and maybe attacked a small country to boot, just to show we don’t take no crap from nobody.

I can’t hardly wait till 2012 and Sarah is elected.

Have a good p.m. everybody. And try not to blush when somebody mentions this President. There’s no reason for you to blush. You didn’t vote for him. He got elected by ACORN.

Bows are the traditional greeting in East Asia, particularly in Japan and Korea. However, bowing is not reserved only for greetings. Bowing is a gesture of respect. Different bows are used for apologies and gratitude, to express different emotions, humility, sincerity, remorse, or deference, and in various traditional arts and religious ceremonies.

Basic bows originate at the waist and are performed with the back straight and the hands at the sides (for men) or clasped in front (for women), and with the eyes down. Generally, the longer and deeper the bow, the stronger the emotion or the greater the difference in social standing.

Bows can be generally divided into three main types: informal, formal, and very formal. Informal bows are made at about a fifteen degree angle and more formal bows at about thirty degrees. Very formal bows are deeper. In extreme cases a kneeling bow is performed, which may be so deep that the forehead touches the floor. There is an extremely complex etiquette surrounding bowing, including the length and depth of bow, and the appropriate response. For example, if the other person maintains his or her bow for longer than expected (generally about two or three seconds), it is polite to bow again, upon which one may receive another bow in return, often leading to an exchange of progressively lighter bows.

Josef Nix

Medical Pot can help me explain.

Bows are a required and expected part of any apology or expression of thanks in East Asia, especially Japan and Korea.

Bows of apology tend to be deeper and last longer than other types of bow. They occur with frequency during the apology, generally at about 45 degrees with the head lowered and lasting for at least the count of three, sometimes longer. The depth, frequency and duration of the bow increases with the sincerity of the apology and the severity of the offense. Bows of thanks follow the same pattern.

Bows of apology are frequently performed at press conferences by high-ranking members of a company that has performed some misdeed, such as producing faulty parts that resulted in a death. These bows are almost invariably performed standing behind a table; the tips of the fingers touch the table while the upper body, held straight, is lowered from the waist until the face is parallel with the tabletop.

Asians are familiar with the custom of bowing, this often leads to a combined bow and handshake. Bows may be combined with handshakes or performed before or after shaking hands.

Generally when bowing in proximity to another, as necessitated when combining bowing and shaking hands, people turn slightly to one side to avoid bumping heads.

What would they say if the Japanese came to the U.S., the President stuck out his hand for a shake, and they bowed, leaving the President standing there with his hand out? Would that be appropriate?

Showing respect for your hosts is not a weakness, it is called etiquette.

Is there ever a time when you don’t see a “small difference between the two circumstances”. I mean there is always some thin reed of an explanation for why conservatives are bad for doing something, but liberals are not bad for doing the same thing.

Prince Abdullah had nothing to do with 9/11 and the Saudi government has been among the most ruthless opponents of al-Qaeda. This hair splitting does not change the fact that partisan liberals did exactly the same thing to Bush that partisan conservatives are doing to Obama now.

Just like they thought that Bush was not a legitimate President. Just as they called him a Fascist. Just as they accused him of destroying America, etc, etc.

The arguments made by the partisans and the knee-jerk outraged response to these arguments are exactly the same.

Foam on the bunghole of a barrel in a brewery.

A bunghole is a hole bored in a liquid-tight barrel. The hole is capped with a large cork-like object called a bung.

Bungholes were first used on wooden barrels, and were typically bored by the purchaser of the barrel using a brace and bit. Bungholes can be bored in either head (end) of a barrel or in one of the staves (side). With the bung removed, a tapered faucet can be attached to aid with dispensing. When barrels full of a commodity were shipped, the recipient would often bore new bungholes of the most suitable size and placement rather than remove the existing bung. Wooden barrels manufactured by specialty firms today usually are bored by the maker with suitable bungholes, since the hobbyists who purchase them for the making of beer, wine, and fermented foods often do not have a suitable brace and bit.

Closed-head steel barrels and drums now used for shipment of chemicals and petroleum products have a standardized bunghole arrangement, with one 2″ NPT and one 3/4″ NPT threaded bunghole on opposite sides of the top head. Some steel barrels are also equipped with a 2″ threaded bunghole on the side.

In his work Hamlet, William Shakespeare makes a passing reference to bungholes, as Hamlet contemplates the skull of his old friend Yorick, and how even such high mortals as Alexander the Great must inevitably return to lowly dust:

Hamlet: To what base uses we may return, Horatio! Why may not imagination trace the noble dust of Alexander, till he find it stopping a bung-hole?
Horatio: ‘Twere to consider too curiously, to consider so.
Hamlet: No, faith, not a jot; but to follow him thither with modesty enough, and likelihood to lead it: as thus: Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returneth into dust; the dust is earth; of earth we make loam; and why of that loam, whereto he was converted, might they not stop a beer-barre

W YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–As President Obama continues his trip through Asia this week, he is trying to sell both himself and his policies on the other side of the world. When he makes it back to the United States, he may have to do the same type of sell here as his approval ratings continue their downward spiral with Americans believing that the country as a whole is moving in the wrong direction. The President, and Congress for that matter, need to do something positive in the eyes of the American public to stand a chance of increasing their approval numbers in the near future.

This month, just over two in five Americans (43%) give the president positive ratings on the job he is doing while 57% give him negative ratings. This is down from last month when 45% gave President Obama positive ratings and 55% gave him negative marks and it continues the steady downward trend that has been happening since June.

The Japanese themselves said the bow inappropriate. And he did it for them, not for Americans, so the gesture did worse than fall flat, it made the Japanese think Obama is an idiot who couldn’t be bothered to spend five minutes finding out the proper protocol. What Americans think when polled on this particular issue is completely irrelevant, since the average American isn’t supposed to know the proper ettiquette in Japan. Fox News has pulled off another dominant quarter, claiming the top 10 cable news programs in 3Q 2009 and growing against 3Q 2008, while CNN and MSNBC lost substantial portions of their election-boom audience.

Fox News averaged 2.25 million total viewers in prime time for the third quarter, up 2% over the previous year. That’s more than CNN (946,000, down 30%) and MSNBC (788,000, down 10%) combined.

“The O’Reilly Factor” led all cable news programs with an average of 3.295 million total viewers for the quarter, up 12% over the previous year. “Hannity” (2.603 million, up 9%), “Glenn Beck” (2.403 million, up 89%), “On the Record with Greta van Susteren” (2.150 million, up 16%), and “Special Report with Bret Baier” (1.997 million, up 20%) rounded out the top five.

Meanwhile, flagship programs at MSNBC and CNN did not sustain their growth from 3Q 2008: At MSNBC, “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” averaged 1.087 million total viewers, down 12% from the previous year and “The Rachel Maddow Show” averaged 996,000 total viewers (Maddow began the program in September 2008, so a comparison for the quarter would be inaccurate; compared to September 2008, though, Maddow’s September 2009 total viewer average is down 40%). At CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360″ averaged 1.005 million viewers, down 17% from the previous year and “Lou Dobbs” averaged 658,000 total viewers, down 24%. Larry King and Campbell Brown were both down just slightly in total viewers.

CNN in particular had a rough quarter in the primetime Adults 25-54 demo: the network dropped 39% compared to 3Q 2008, averaging 287,000 viewers.

A burqa (Arabic pronunciation: [ˈbʊrqa]; also transliterated burkha, burka or burqua from Arabic: برقع‎ burqu‘ ) is an enveloping outer garment worn by women in some Islamic traditions for the purpose of cloaking the entire body. It is worn over the usual daily clothing (often a long dress or a shalwar kameez) and removed when the woman returns to the sanctuary of the household (see purdah).

I think Fox is a joke, but at least Hannity admitted the inaccuracy. MSNBC didn’t even live up to that low standard:

“On Friday’s edition of Morning Meeting, host Dylan Ratigan featured fake photos of Sarah Palin during a mocking segment on why Americans are fascinated with the former vice presidential candidate. While listing the show’s top ten reasons, Ratigan showed a doctored photo of Palin’s head on the bikini-clad body of a woman holding a weapon.

The host never admitted or addressed the fact that his network was passing off counterfeit pictures to his viewers. Earlier in the segment, Ratigan displayed an image of Palin in a short, black mini-skirt. This photo is also not real.”

The middle of the road people who may favor Obama more (it would take a miracle for him to top 80 percent EVERY) are probably annoyed with how long the health care issue is taking. I personally think he should articulate exactly what he wants to kind of unify his people behind him. John Boehner and other GOP leaders have no such problem. It’s not hard to say NO!!!!

He’s also not going to be highly popular until the unemployment rate starts shrinking. $700 billion was spent to stimulate the economy, and the 15 million or so out of work aren’t going to approve of that until they get a job.

Speaking of neologism. You remind me of the 1950’s soft drink. And what YOU have.

Neologisms are often created by combining existing words (see compound noun and adjective) or by giving words new and unique suffixes or prefixes. Portmanteaux are combined words that begin to be used commonly. Neologisms also can be created through abbreviation or acronym, by intentionally rhyming with existing words or simply through playing with sounds.

Neologisms often become popular through memetics, by way of mass media, the Internet, and word of mouth, including academic discourse in many fields renowned for their use of distinctive jargon, and often become accepted parts of the language. Other times, however, they disappear from common use just as readily as they appeared. Whether a neologism continues as part of the language depends on many factors, probably the most important of which is acceptance by the public. It is unusual, however, for a word to enter common use if it does not resemble another word or words in an identifiable way.

When a word or phrase is no longer “new”, it is no longer a neologism. Neologisms may take decades to become “old”, however. Opinions differ on exactly how old a word must be to cease being considered a neologism.

The American tradition of not bowing to a foreign leader, and foreign royalty in particular, began with President Washington and has been honored by every President, including liberals such as Carter , until now. The tradition stems from the democratic revolutions of the 18th century, and the idea that free men and women should neither “bow to a king or step on a worm” . While the act of bowing to a king may not offend the ignorant, and by that I mean historically ignorant people of all political parties, it is offensive to anyone who understands American republican (small r) values and traditions. What I find even more disturbing than the act of bowing, however, is the complete ignorance of the general public and the apparent absence of any pride in being American.

The question is not about “if it is ok to bow”. No Japanese bows that way. It is always a little bit of bending over. However, it maybe our president just stoops over everytime. It is the same way with the Saudi King, and to the Japanese Emperor. I don’t mind bowing. However, I think it is reflective of his confidence level when meeting with other world leaders, and representing the American people. My personal opinion the picture is not good.

August 09 — Gallup Daily tracking. [AUTHOR'S NOTE: Obama's job approval rating has fallen to 50% since this story was originally published.] Should his rating continue its downward trend and fall below 50%, he would — like most post-World War II presidents — have less-than-majority approval at some point in his presidency. However, Obama, in his eighth month in office, could hit this mark in a shorter time than has typically been the case. If his rating falls below 50% before November, it would represent the third-fastest drop to below majority approval since World War II, behind the declines for Gerald Ford (in his third month as president) and Bill Clinton (in his fourth month).

And Obama’s personal approval rating is still quite high, this poll was his job approval rating. And right now we’re still going though some tough times, none of which Obama caused.

The Obama presidency is much like a doctor in an emergency room. When Bush got drunk and ran the country off the road into a ditch they gave the body to Obama to heal. Audrey,

Why do you want to take away my insurance and healthcare? I’m a pretty healthy guy. Non-smoker, enjoy a drink from time to time.. I go for check-ups, I eat right, work out.. I got a job that lent me the option to have insurance after going a few years without it and paying out of my pocket. What needs to be changed? My wife works at a hospital for children.. Those poor kids get all the best treatments, and they don’t pay a dime? I waited in the urgent care once for some stitches, and had to wait while the illegals and the indigent got served before me, and I’m sure they didn’t pay because they said they couldn’t. I gave them my card, and I paid my deductible.

Whats wrong with the system now? Insurance and tort reform I’m all for. Taking away my choice, and feeling that I should suffer because of my responsible actions, because others didn’t do the same.. is wrong.

Something I have been thinking about off and on for a few weeks.

What will Hillary do?
I predict that within 6 months after the 2010 election (by early May, 2011) Hillary will resign. Then form a Study Committee, maybe make a listening tour of the country. Then later in the year announce that she will campaign for the 2012 Democrat Presidential nomination.

I am certain that I am not the only person thinking something like this. My question: Are any Democrats thinking this way?

Last righteous? Easy for you to say, I s’pose, since you’ve never lived under tyranny.

Do you know what the age of accountability is for children under Islamic law? It’s 15 for boys…9 for girls. If a 9 year-old girl is caught stealing (something many of our kids do…candy…trinkets, etc.) four fingers are removed from her right hand. That’s for the first offense. Second offense? Her left foot is removed. Prison for the third, and death for the fourth.

The 9 year-old boy. He goes scott free. He only becomes accountable once he reaches the age of 15.

If you were a Kurd under Saddam, you get gassed just because you are…

And I watch The Meter to see how he’s doing as well.

And if his party loses the 16-seat House average in 2010 after he pushes real hard to accomplish the tougher goals (HCR being the big garish one, but there are others like killing DADT and maybe instituting a more sensible immigration policy), eh. He’ll likely be re-elected.

They were over there openly telling the nurse at the triage, and the insurance liason that they DID NOT intend to pay for their service. That they couldn’t and wouldn’t. They had no ID to show.

I didn’t need to delve deeper into it, but the rather loud banter they kept going on about how they better not get a bill in the mail… Well, that kinda gave it away.

And they smelled like crap, looked like crap, and the kids didn’t have shoes. You tell me if these people cared about paying for a SERVICE? And lets be honest… Non-English speaker… refuse to show ID, or understand how to show an id… Or maybe it was the other cook that brought in his co-worker, to translate, so that his line helper could get sewn up from a knife cut in the kitchen.. If your legal, you have nothing to hide!

Maybe I should go to the restaurant tonight and tell them I’m broke and won’t be paying for my meal after I order it. I wonder how that will go over?

What about the bank that does my mortgages?! Just tell them I’m done paying, and think I should have a free house.. Yeah, thats the ticket!

Are you one of those people who’ve never cared about politics until “The Man” came to power? I bet your the kind that didn’t pay any attention to what went on, but felt that it was really awesome to put a “Change” or “Hope” sticker on your car… Infact, the oddest thing is.. during all the elections in the past, I’ve always seen both sides of the parties, and their garbage stickers and ads.. Rarely do you find them in the hood. Now, it’s uncool to be black, and not have one of those stickers on their beaters. The same way it was common practice to find those dopy “W” stickers on cars.
Racist or not, black people rarely care about voting and elections. Look at our turn out in ATL. It was sub-par at best. No one cared at all.. They banked on the voters of 2008 to come out and vote again in droves. ACORN didn’t care about the ATL vote. Not even 25% of voters showed.

Going with your train of thought here…. if your including free health care in the “welfare” clause.. What about free college degrees for anyone? What about…. Free housing? We need a house to be healthy and prosperous, right?

What about food? We all need that? Who can perform well with no intake? Cars? We should get cars too for free? Need them to get to work, and get things done after work, right??

Your argument doesn’t hold water.. Anything can be included in that, and it doesnt say healthcare is a right. It’s not.

At least up until 4 years ago testing for citizenship in a language other than English was only allowed for the very elderly or or a person with some infirmity that prevented them from gaining a working knowledge of English.

It does not matter what you or I think concerning this matter. What matters is just what did the bow mean to the Japanese? Just what does it mean when a citizen of Japan bows to the emperor of Japan? Does it mean that he/she is acknowledging the “divinity of the emperor” (Tennô which is usually translated into the English emperor literally means “heavenly sovereign”), that he is a direct decedent of the Japanese Kami, and the highest authority in the Shinto religion? Sometimes yes. So, just what did the Japanese think that Obama meant by his bow?

GetitRight, get a grip. Your interpretation is stressing you out, and stress is a killer, you know. The government, which is actually you and me by proxy, has established guidelines and systems by which people in this country (most if not all) have access to clean water — to the extent that we take it forgranted. As a result, we have a healthier, more productive general welfare than countries where people drink feces-contaminated mud. Pay attention now, Sparky: This is NOT the same thing as having a federal agent come to your house and force an enema hose into your anus, followed by three gallons of [much needed] cleansing water. See? Tweaking systems so fewer people are left out of lifesaving goods and services can be beneficial to us ALL! It doesn’t mean the end of goodness as you define it. Bless your heart.

Ditto Matilda! Big D, I think I have hurt your feelings. Get over it! Here is a quick English lesson for you. Your is the possession of you. Example: your opinion, your way of life,
your attitude. You’re is the contraction of the two words you and are combined. Example:
you’re nice (you are nice), you’re not nice (you are not nice), and you’re happy (you are
happy.) I hope this English lesson helps everyone going forward.

For example: Audrey, we have good news and bad news….you have ovarian cancer and need surgery…it won’t cost you much, so that’s good. It can be scheduled in 6 months…the bad news is at the current spread rate you have 4 months to live.

Bosch to GetItRight

As to the other issue: unless you are some kind of supernatural creature who can read minds, you have no idea if a person is illegal or legal simply by sight, or smell.

Your refusal to acknowledge wrongdoing on the part of leftists is astounding. But then you’re not here to discuss issues. You’re here to discuss other people, which is exactly why I take hits at you when you apply the old double standard principle.

His ratings are slipping because the koolaid is starting to wear off. If you were anti-war, the increased body bags returning from Afghanistan is not the change you hoped for. If you’re a 20 something ‘invincible’, being forced to pay for health insurance you don’t want isn’t the change you hoped for. If you’re one of the 16% of unemployed Amnericans due to the total failure of both stimulus packages, this isn’t the change you hoped for.

Dis/Approval ratings, What is that? What was W’s approval rating his last YEARS in office? What was Clintons approval ratings? We have checks and balances in place to make sure that not even the President has so much power. In 1-2 yrs the disapproval will show when Congress gets re-balanced in favor of the GOP. Then when everyone sees that with a Dem in the WH and a GOP controlled Congress even then nothing much will get done. I am convinced that our Modern Day politicians on both sides are in cahoots. Honestly when was the last time we had a Great Statesmen or a real Leader?

There is hope, but it is slight.

The last time this country had a balanced budget was right after Clinton failed to pass his version of healthcare. Congress was cleaned out and replaced with the gop, which unlike the Bush years demanded a balanced budget. If you will recall, Clinton had to submit 5 budget proposals before congress approved one and the budget was balanced within the next 4 years.

If this monster bill goes through, you can kiss that balanced budget goodbye forever, and the downfall of America will be complete. Before long, a strong economy would barely be able to pay the interest, much less the bills.

How many “average workers” should have kept their jobs? How many families had to stress over the fact their head of household was let go for no reason? Bush’s base is still alive and kickin’ because of the good ole’ southern boy mentality in this grand republican state. I think it is absolutely absurb for people to hold Obama accountable for the state of this country. He has been given a huge responsibility to fix mess that’s been brewing for years. It is also appropriate for world leaders to bow when the custom of that country requires it. If the US had a custom for other world leaders to bow to Obama, would the Republicans be upset if someone didn’t do it. People let’s get real. Let’s focus on real issues and not this type of foolishness!!
