Boy is it ever fun to see the wingnuts on display. Basically the argument is “Obama is destroying the nation – we needs mo tax cuts and you lefties goes to work now. Everything will be grand when we get them Democrats out of power”. Hah, Yanks, you never learn a thing do you? Both parties have sold you completely down the river. And have any of you noticed that many of those horrible socialized countries are coming out of recession faster than you are? Chine, Communist China mind you, is rocketing ahead. The EU, a bigger economic power than the US now, was pleasantly surprised by a larger trade surplus than they had expected and both France and Germany are doing better economically than the US. Germany has seen their unemployment rate rise by a walloping 0.5% – how much as it gone up here? And as to those who want blame all of this on Obama, not that I’m a great fan of him, who was President when this mess started? What party was the idiot from who said that the fundamentals of our economy are strong? Yanks, you are losing power and are an empire in decline – get used to it.

- I actually enjoy Hanson’s books. “Hoplites” and
“Carnage and Culture” are the standards of modern
military history as far as ancient warfare are concerned.

I first came across his name from a CD-ROM encyclopedia
I purchased in 1994 (Software Toolworks; was the default
CD that came with the Creative external CD-ROM Drive).
“Carnage and Culture” analyzes nine battles of ancient and
recent history, and Hanson himself is an example of moderate
political views.

Nonsense. It isn’t so much that other powers have risen, it’s that we have fallen. Debt is killing us. We are addicted to other people’s money, whether it be rich people in this country whose money we want to seize or by uncontrolled borrowing from other nations. This has all happened before in history, and it most certainly DOES depend on our policies.

And by the way, if it comes down to a choice to listen to Victor Davis Hanson or Jay Bookman, that is an easy one to make. That is not a dig at Bookman as much as respect for Hanson. He understands history a lot better than Bookman (or me).
