Hm, you democrats that are commenting really do surprise me. Moving the prisoners to Illinois is not a matter of Republicans or Democrats being cowards or corrupt or any of that. The fact of the matter is that moving them to Illinois is simply a dangerous decision, and as an Illinois resident is terrifying. While we are not 100% safe with them in GITMO, we are that much safer than we are with them here.

Anyone who would suggest that they cannot "melt through metal bars" or "escape a maximum security prison", is simply uneducated and unaware. The guards in the prison would be just as inexperienced and unqualified as the people who are supposed to be protecting our airports and borders, and who have allowed KNOWN terrorists and felons to "slip" into our country.

What Americans don't understand is the lack of humilty among terrorists, and that they truly do not have a value on human life. They have more connections all over our country than we can possibly fathom, and moving them here would make there operations that much more feasible than they are now.

Seriously Democrats, get over yourselves and our dishonest and overpromising president and start seeing reality.

American is the coward! The reason Gitmo is being closed is due to FEAR, fear for our image abroad, fear that it's reputation is hurting the feelings of the radical Islamic terrorists, fear that terrorists are using it's existence as a recruiting tool, fear of what the UN thinks.

America has always held prisoners of war until the war was over. Controversial enhanced interrogation techniques were used at Gitmo but are no longer being used. Suspected detainees experienced an indefinite incarceration but are being tried now. A federal judge ruled in the spring that the pres. can detain POW's indefinitely without charges.

Congress voted overwhelmingly in the spring (Senate 90-6) against funding $80 M to close Gitmo. Harry Reid said, "We don't want them around. I can't make it any more clear..."

We need to try & convict the detainees we can & detain the others at Gitmo until the wars are over. We should transfer those detained at Batram to Gitmo. Some of those released were picked up on the battlefield a second time. Most of our allies have turned us down. They don't want them either.

If we ever capture bin Laden, where is a better place to detain him until trial? On an island or in a US prison?

There is NO reason to close Gitmo except an irrational fear.

P.S. If we try them in federal courts rather than in military tribunals, we should pass out copies of the Purpose of Life in the streets just in case there's some Brian Nichols-type antics.

md,

"dropping out of a free education system is a choice, and so is getting back into same said system. Many like to make the first choice yet far fewer want to make the second choice."

I agree, but what does that have to do with the topic du jour?

"But, I sure as hell didn’t decide to stay poor just so I could keep getting that handout."

Good for you, but there are many that have decided to "stay poor".

Remember, dropping out of a free education system is a choice, and so is getting back into same said system. Many like to make the first choice yet far fewer want to make the second choice.

The Earned Income Tax Credit really helped the Bosch family back in the day when we were young, still in graduate school all the while working and raising our very young kids.

md,

I don't dispute that the Earned Income Credit is a benefit (or in wingnutese "handout") to lower wage earners, but I also have not seen any Republicans doing anything to stop that program. So the notion of those on the left being the only ones who give handouts is simply not true.
