The FBI has issued a statement regarding its investigation into the tragedy at Fort Hood, including revelations that Major Malik Nidal Hasan had come to the agency’s attention long before the shooting last week:
At this point, there is no information to indicate Major Malik Nidal Hasan had any co-conspirators or was part of a broader terrorist plot…. Major Hasan came to the attention of the FBI in December 2008 as part of an unrelated investigation being conducted by one of our Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs). JTTFs are FBI-led, multi-agency teams made up of FBI agents, other federal investigators — including those from the Department of Defense — and state and local law enforcement officers.
Investigators on the JTTF reviewed certain communications between Major Hasan and the subject of that investigation and assessed that the content of those communications was consistent with research being conducted by Major Hasan in his position as a psychiatrist at the Walter Reed Medical Center. Because the content of the communications was explainable by his research and nothing else derogatory was found, the JTTF concluded that Major Hasan was not involved in terrorist activities or terrorist planning.
The unnamed “subject of that investigation” was a militant imam now in Yemen, an American citizen by the name of Anwar al-Awlaki. As the Chicago Tribune reports, unidentified senior law enforcement and military officials in Washington officials told reporters that al-Awlaki “had ties to al-Qaida and was the author of a popular Web site espousing jihadist activity.”
“The disclosure that Hasan had ongoing communications with al-Awlaki, who had ties to some of the Sept. 11 hijackers, immediately raised questions as to whether U.S. intelligence and law-enforcement agencies had information that, if properly shared and investigated, might have helped prevent the attack that left 13 dead and 29 injured.”
(For a backgrounder on al-Awlaki, see here.)
Congressional investigations of such matters can become little more than sloppy publicity platforms, but given the involvement of multiple agencies and the possibility that internal investigations could be whitewashes, I suppose there’s little alternative to an outside look. Hindsight is dreadfully accurate, but we do need to determine how to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The wisest, most balanced piece I’ve seen on how the military should have responded to concerns about Major Hasan Nidal came in the form of an editorial in the Los Angeles Times:
“It’s essential to avoid profiling people on the basis of their religion, but that doesn’t require us to deny the existence in this country, as elsewhere, of a dangerous and anti-American ideology that identifies itself with Islam and seeks to recruit believing Muslims. If the U.S. military receives evidence that some of its members have succumbed to the siren song of extremism, it must investigate. Not to do so would be foolhardy. But it must be done in a way that doesn’t treat adherence to Islam itself as a security risk. It would be grossly unfair, for example, to subject all Muslim recruits to special screening, as some commentators on the right have proposed.
Nor should Islamic extremism be the only noxious ideology monitored by the military. The Department of Homeland Security came under misguided criticism from veterans this year when it released a report warning that some disaffected veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were especially susceptible to the lures of right-wing extremism. That common-sense conclusion also applies to current and prospective members of the armed forces…..
Policing a service member’s participation in an extremist group becomes more delicate when the organization is a religious one. But if we’re talking about involvement in a mosque where violence is preached — or in a white supremacist group that calls itself a church — that’s not a private matter. The military can recognize and act on that fact without presuming that every Muslim is an extremist.”
Of course, finding such a fine balance is so much easier in theory than in practice with actual human beings.

Racial profiling is the proper way to dredge out these dregs. These islams are determined to take over…see Europe. There philosophy seems to be that of “William the LongShanks”…if we cant get them out we’ll breed them out, in somewhat different fashion. Thereby soaking the welfare systems and eventually resting control of local govts.

We need to take our country back from the Heathens and Atheists and Ragheads and Hippies and put God back in the military and our schools again! We need to stop being all Politically Correct. If his name is Habib or al Mekvi or Goldstein and not Jones or Smith or Wragg or Stumpbottom, he don’t belong in the military or in charge of anything in this country.
You know good and well this raghead that shot all those soldiers was a Terrist. You could tell by his name. But they let him in the army anyway and even made him a Major!
Anyhow, I’m just disgusted with how stupid this country has become and I know there’s lots of people on this blog that’s as disgusted as I am. We need to bring back the 1920s and 1930s and get back to our roots again and stop catering to all these Minorities!

Yeah, damn that ACLU:
The ACLU is our nation’s guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.
These rights include:
Your First Amendment rights – freedom of speech, association and assembly; freedom of the press, and freedom of religion.
Your right to equal protection under the law – protection against unlawful discrimination.
Your right to due process – fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
Your right to privacy – freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.
The ACLU also works to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including people of color; women; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people; prisoners; and people with disabilities.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And Block – Seriously? You wanna go with this?
“How in the heck are citizens supposed to narrow down who to look for?”
Citizens don’t need to be looking for bank robbers – that’s the police’s job. Or are you one of those who like to go out with your gun to hunt them down all vigilante style?
Displacing that much sand would change the diameter of the earth by inches and that could alter the angular velocity of the earth and even result in more wobble if the change is not uniform. “…a dangerous and anti-American ideology…”
This is a really big phrase isn’t it, “a dangerous and anti-American ideology”. Anti-American ideology is like beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder.
For example, I would suggest that those members of the Georgia legislature who call for Georgia to secede from the United States are, in fact, anti-American ideologues. They do not accept the rule of law and want to destroy the United States. Others would say that I am full of it (it has been said before & I never deny it).
Long discussion on Major Hasan on “Morning Joe’ this AM. Consensus, as I heard it, was that the Army officers who were aware of Hasan’s thinking did nothing because it was easier to do nothing than take a stand & risk their own careers.
Billy Beer drinker,
The only ones currently taking more of my money (in the form of taxes and fees) are those of the Republican faith at the state (Georgia) and county levels. My fed level taxes are still going down. Further, unless Obama intervenes, Bush and the Republicans will be responsible for increasing my fed level taxes just as soon as their tax cuts expire per their legislation.
I think Common Sense / Block #23 is the blogger formerly known as the Corporal. The Corporal was the Prince of the Bookman blog.
Taxpayer,
If Block was the Corporal – he’d be bragging about his Secret Service duty – he wouldn’t be able to resist.
Hopefully he was cleared under the Bush administration, or else the vast-right-wing-conspirators will never let Obama live it down.
It looks like the Army dropped the ball, as well. It’s incomprehensible that they would make someone with his known views stay in the service when he asked to be relieved of duty.
“Fort Hood shooting suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, wanted out of the Army after being constantly harassed by others in the military and was called a “camel jockey,” his family said.”
“Apparently became very disgruntled in the mission in Iraq and Afghanistan and voiced that to a lot of his colleagues,” said Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX).
Dont believe a word of it. Yet even if true then the shootings is justified?
Do the math: “Nearly a year before Maj. Nidal Hasan allegedly went on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, terrorism investigators conducted an “assessment” of him before deciding he did not pose a threat.” from the AJC
In using the generalization “they are after all,superior in every regard to government employees” I must say for one of few times I agree with AmVet, the private sector is superior in almost all facets than anything run by government.
So you two are in agreement with Marsh’s 9:49 post, which is:
Obama is a better President than Bush because his first attack did not come until November while Bush’s America was attacked in September.
Good morning Tn, Your statement, “It looks like the Army dropped the ball, as well. It’s incomprehensible that they would make someone with his known views stay in the service when he asked to be relieved of duty.”
The military mindset is that “You joined, you do your duty. You don’t have to like it, you do have to do it”. They would add, “If we let you out for religious reasons, we’d have to let everybody out.”
Little known fact, hidden deep in the monstrous healthcare bill is a provision inserted by Imam Hussein Obama that each day $2.00 of taxpayer monies be sent to his brother in Kenya, since Barry is too cheap to send his own money
