Back in May, the Obama administration set explicit conditions for a resumption of peace talks in the Middle East. As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sternly laid them out:
“He wants to see a stop to settlements — not some settlements, not outposts, not ‘natural growth’ exceptions. We think it is in the best interests [of the peace process] that settlement expansion cease. That is our position. That is what we have communicated very clearly. … And we intend to press that point.”
If the administration pressed that point, it certainly didn’t win it. Israel under Benjamin Netanyahu in effect called Obama’s bluff, blithely ignoring the American pressure and continuing to expand settlements. Obama has been powerless to respond.
The Arab world, ever aware of the ebbs and flows of power, noticed Obama’s failure. They now have no faith that the United States will be able to wring concessions from Israel in peace talks, so they see no reason to negotiate. Israel’s continuing expansion is, in their eyes, an aggressive act from an opponent with no real interest in talking, and that conclusion is sadly correct.
In truth, there hasn’t been much realistic hope of progress toward peace in the Middle East since the end of the Clinton administration, when the late Yasser Arafat walked away from the best deal the Palestinians were ever likely to see. But Obama’s decision to draw a line in the sand over settlements and then fail to back it up was a major mistake that set the cause of peace back even further.

And if Tea Party Republicans do win big next year, what has already happened in California could happen at the national level. In California, the G.O.P. has essentially shrunk down to a rump party with no interest in actually governing — but that rump remains big enough to prevent anyone else from dealing with the state’s fiscal crisis. If this happens to America as a whole, as it all too easily could, the country could become effectively ungovernable in the midst of an ongoing economic disaster.

Agree with Normal. We send a lot of aid to Israel. They don’t wamt to simply live peacefully, they want to crowd out their neighbors because they feel they have a right to their land. That is not a peaceful position and America should withdraw support. They are strong enough to stand on their own now.

So how did concessions to the Palestinians work out before?
Did it bring peace in the middle east?
Benjamin Netanyahu apparently has this magical unique ability that few liberals possess: he is able to see past the promises and LOOK AT THE ACTUAL RESULTS.
Here’s some crazy talk, but maybe we should start looking to someone besides Israel to start making concessions.
And has anyone figured out why the Palestinian land that was given to Jordan is never in question? AND has anyone figured out why the Middle eastern Arabs that are some of the richest people in the world can’t help their fellow Palestinians?
Why is it the responsibility of Israelis and Americans to help the Palestinians, considering how much they hate both countries.
I know. Waaaay too logical to even consider. American and Israel are just plain eeeeeevil.

Cut Aid to Israel.
Sure. Let’s abandon our Allies for promises of peace from people who have never stood by their promises. I think we are really onto something. Let’s take missile defense out of Poland so that Russia will feel better. Let’s cut funding and demand that Israel be nice to the people who launch rockets into neighborhoods, and let’s set down and discuss nuclear arms with Iran. They certainly like to take Obama by the back of his head and rub his nose in the smell of this administration’s incompetence.

So we have about seven countries over there plus the Palestinians who will settle for no less than the destruction of Israel and its people. And what’s the solution proposed by some of the geniuses on this blog? Why, it’s to cut off U.S. aid to Israel and thereby help these countries and the Palestinians destroy Israel.
It’s time to face the facts. Most Arab countries do not want peace with Israel. They want it eradicated from the face of the earth. It wouldn’t matter if the government of Israel completely eradicated all the settlements now existing. The goal of Israel’s enemies would remain the same.
So why are we so anxious to aid in the destruction of our only real friend in the Middle East?

If we ceased aid to all of the countries who displayed “bad behavior” we could pay off the national debt. Israel is a country that is only 48 miles wide at it’s widest point, surrounded by mountains on three sides and by the sea on the other. They fight every day for their survival. They are one of the few voices of reason in the Middle East and a good ally, if not provoked by someone like Bozo who is in so far over his head in foreign policy that he might well not even voice an opinion. If a friend like Netanyahu can call his bluff, just think what is in store for us in his future negotiations with Putin, North Korea and Iran.

The problem among the reality averse, rationally challenged, sound bite, War First gang is that cutting the staggering amount of giveaways to Israel is equivalent to abandoning her.
The vast majorities of people in Israel and Palestine want a two state peace.
Two thirds of Americans believe the amount of “aid” given to Israel, with a per capital income rivaling those of Europeans, is excessive.
Since 1948 the US has given over a BILLION dollars (not adjusted for inflation and not including loan guarantees) to Israel. Over $500 per Israeli compared to 45 cents per Ethiopian for example.
And the people who prosper the most? OF COURSE, the thousands of DoD contractrors…

Israel exists because the United Nations created it. However, Israel literally ignores every UN resolution that directs Israel to act differently. The US enables this behavior by vetoing Security Council resolutions criticizing/affecting Israel.
Israel took the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights in 1967. An entire generation of Palestinians has grown up in squalid refugee camps while the world has allowed Israel to deny these people their homes, farms, and lives. The Palestinians don’t have any real weapons with which to fight the Israeli military, so they use terror tactics to try to keep the situation on the world stage. If this land grab had happened to Americans, they would quickly turn into terrorists to try to reclaim their lost lands.
The Israelis used the threat of war with the Arab states as a excuse to take territory from the Palestinians. After 42 years of occupation, it is well past time for the Israelis to return ALL the territory they took. And as long as the US supports Israel while these territories are occupied, much of the Arab world will consider the US an enemy.

Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. aid since World War II. Since 1985, it has received an average of $3 billion in grants annually, about two-thirds of it for military aid. (source) In recent years, a plan to reduce Israel’s economic dependence on foreign aid has led to gradual reductions in the proportion of economic to military aid. In 2005, for example, military grants amounted to $2.63 billion, and economic aid to $360 million.
Unlike any other U.S. aid recipient, Israel receives all of its aid in the first thirty days of the fiscal year, instead of quarterly installments. And unlike any other recipient of U.S. aid, Israel is not required to account for its expenditures. Israel, thus, is free to spend U.S. aid as it sees fit, including in ways that contradict U.S. policies – as in the building of settlements in the Occupied Territories.

Not only do they have no faith the US will be able to wring concessions from Israel, they may also make the link the US will be unable to wring concessions on other issues, such as Iran.

In fact, I think it is time to plant the seeds of change. Real change. Change for the better. With that in mind, a new study just released by the science arm of Liberty University shows conclusively that Israel actually broke off from the middle east as a result of a massive dinosaur stampede in 1 AD and the land mass was subsequently transported by hurricane-force winds that were described as miraculous by many across the Atlantic until it hooked up with North America. The rest is history. Now that’s just one example of how you might use the technique of ‘The Big Lie’ for the good of mankind as opposed to the Republican party’s usage of said technique to date.

“President Obama”: Bush DID do exactly what he wanted to do and he did it in HIS own way. That’s what got the country so mad at him. The current Prez is walking on that same slippery slope…doing things his way without regard to to his own campaign promises. He’s broken so many promises now he’s starting to resemble Humpty Dumpty. He’ll never get put back together again.

Shrub’s simple minded policies have turned the entire Middle East into a powder keg…it is not if it blows, but when. We can spend trillions more dollars trying to fix what Shrub wrought, but in the end it will be really ugly and untold numbers of people will die.

Don’t worry about the Palestinians, Jay. The Muslims are fast colonizing Europe and if they move fast enough, maybe the Palestinians can colonize Germany all for themselves. That would solve a lot of problems for everyone. Lebanon, Syria and Jordan could clear out all the Palestinian ghettos with a clear conscience after teaching the rudimentary German and issuing them shoes to replace sandals (German winters are REALLY cold).

Israel has more sway with our government than many of the states of the United States.
As long as the Israeli lobby maintains power over the Congress and we continue to believe the “holocaust” will be visited upon Israel again, the Palestinians or any other designated enemy of Israel will not be politically favorable in this country.
How many US citizens remember the attack of the USS Liberty by the Israel Air Force where 37 American sailors were killed in international waters?
How many realize that Israel took over the Golan Heights, the only source of fresh water in the Middle East and allow the Palestinians only 20 gallons of fresh water daily while the Israeli government subsidizes new homes built in the West Bank by giving a grant of $35,000 to usually move from Eastern Europe and providing “protection and purchase of land” the Israeli’s deem being illegally owned by the Palestinians, even though they have deeds 100’s of years old.?
How many remember the 1967 war where Israel attacked Egypt?
How many remember the attack on the Iraq nuclear power plant being built and maintained by France?
How many realize that Israel has entry restrictions on the Falasha Jews(blacks), documented by the Israeli government as one of the seven lost tribes, yet, anyone else remotely claiming Jewish heritage can move to the country and if an American citizen can obtain dual citizenship?

You know I am not going to think about other things until I get public healthcare! That is the most important thing IAW Potus, pelosi, reid and the liberals. I do not want to go job hunting, I do not want to think about Israel, and the Islamic killing Americans on American soil is a hard thing to push aside. Especially when they kill their own children and ours! But until I get healthcare, the rest of the world can just go to hel&. Thats my story and I am sticking to it.

Josef, I’m not “bashing” Jewsish folk, but I am questioning as to why Isreal is rebuilding the settlements. It’s like a slap in the face to the peace talks. If Isreal, as a nation, doesn’t care, why should we, as a nation, care?

Obama failed to back up:
Campaign finance reform.
Immediate with drawl from Iraq.
Closing Gitmo
Lobbyist
Transparency.
That’s the difference in Liberals and Conservatives. Bush was wrong about WMD but you libs say he lied.
Liberals lie and you use phone phrases like “failed to back up”
At least you have the gonads to even acknowledge he “failed to back up”. Most other drive by media, well they just drive by.
Still ahead, TAXES.

Jay,
maybe you should head over to stormfront and hang out with a bunch of similar thinkers that are obsessed with controlling Jewish population growth and deciding where Jews are allowed to live.
The ’settlements’ as you contemptuously put it, are perfectly legal and Obama knows it. Perhaps he should instead incite hatred over the hundreds of millions of dollars the US gives to the UNRWA–used to fund genocidal Jewhaters and jihadists, not unlike the guy that just shot up Ft. Hood.
‘Settlers’ aren’t the ones going around killing people all over the world. Time to give up the hate already.

incidentally, I am not questioning the legitimacy of the questions you raise relative to the settlements.

**My question for the Jewish voter block is always, Why should the American taxpayer support Israel?**
Would you rather we support Palestine . . . no wait. We already support Palestine.
Please stop listening to the propaganda. Nothing has appealed to the Arabs that Israel has ever done. I think it is unreasonable to demand that Israel make the same mistakes over and over so Obama can pretend he is advancing peace.

I have a more pressing engagement or I’d really be going off here…
I’ve tried to bring some light to these discussions in the past to little avail, J. Few people playing in this comments thread have the foggiest notion of (just picking a couple) the parameters of foreign aid provided by the US to Israel and Egypt; nor do they imagine that any significant percentage of Israelis are opposed to increasing settlements on the West Bank and Gaza.
Me, I’d just like to know what got Jay to thinking about this, this particular morning. Turns out Obama and Netanyahu are going to be meeting this evening, so I guess that’s it.

Take the teleprompter away from this muslim Kenyan and you have a brain the size of a walnut. This shallow bastard, who was elected for every conceivable PC reason won’t ever back up anything he has said (and we may thank God for most of it). This social experiment has failed miserably in less than a year. Now, we have three more years to put up with this joke.

Notice how all the attention has turned toward finding jobs. Of course I will not seek a job and pay taxes until I get public healthcare. The president, pelosi, reid, and the liberal democrats have deemed it more important for me to have healthcare than a job. So sometime in 2010 after healtchare is passed(if it does)I will job search. Possibly in the healtcare profession or with AARP. I am sure a I could make a good salesperson for AARP selling supplemental insurance to old folks. I will use scare tactic suchas the government healthcare will cause them to lose benefits and AARP will save the day.
