According to Lt. Gen. Bob Cone, commanding officer of III Corps at Ft. Hood, Texas: 12 dead, 31 wounded.
The shooter was a U.S. soldier, who was killed.
Two other soldiers who may have been involved have been arrested. Officials believe the situation is now under control.
What a nightmare. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the end this turns out to be a solo act, a soldier who lost it.
UPDATE: The U.S. soldier in question has been identified as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.
UPDATE II: Hasan, an Army psychiatrist slated for assignment overseas, is now reported to be alive, having suffered four gunshot wounds.

we mold these men (and some women) into killing machines, send them around the world to shoot & fight, and then are surprised when 1 snaps…it’s our own faults…the military does nothing but destroy these poor people…i have a TON of family & friends in all branches of the military, my brother is on Ft. Hood as I type this…i know what the military does to a person…may this soldier’s soul rest in peace & my prayers to the families & victims involved

God rest these soldiers souls and God help this country. They deserved way better than to be gunned down by madmen, whoever (or more appropriately, whatever) the madmen were. I know you progressives don’t care too much to any reference to God but just this once patrionize me. The “naivete and backwardness” of the reference is mine and I can deal with that.
IF this is related to Muslim extremism, these soliders blood will fall squarely into Obama’s lap. The terrorists know the weakness of his kum-ba-ya world vision and they know wherein his religious sympathies lie and they will use these against us. This may or may not be one of those times but those times are coming.

This is the reason we are over there, to fight this war on their soil instead of ours. Notice that the first terrorist attack on this soil is months into a Democrat’s administration. Bring Bush back.

What we need is someone to understand what can happen to people that are in battle for extended periods, for starters. Grieve for those lost now that this has happened and use it as a wakeup call.

There is no excuse, no matter how many deployments, no matter what anyone has seen or been through to kill your Brothers and Sisters in arms. I am disgusted and feel nothing for the shooter, no matter what anyone tries to say in his defense.

Rachel- This is an awful, rare occasion. My husband is in the military. But he is not a killing machine. He is a skilled warrior who passed all of his psych tests. All soldiers are given psych tests repeatedly throughout their service. Not all of them pass and they are then treated. Most of the men and women in the military are mental healthy. But just like any other community, there are those that aren’t. This is sad and tragic. It does not mean all of those in the military are “killing machines” and “snap”.

IT is Bad, very bad,,,,, but get a life folks, bad things happen to good people, it is not the military’s fault. Support the troops, belived it or not, THEY DO KEEP YOU SAFE AND SOUND. THINK ABOUT IT WHEN YOU GO TO SLEEP TONIGHT. Your president need to give them what they need, so they can do their job…………

It would be easier to sympathize with you and to “patronize” you if you didn’t start out with a LIE. Just say what you want to say and leave out the “I knows” that aren’t even true.

What a crock. How many of the soldiers that fought in the battle of the Bulge came home and went on a shooting rampage.
PLEASE. For once. STOP TRYING TO CLAIM THAT YOU KNOW THE REASONS!!!!!!!
There has been nothing that says that this (these) shooter(s) were coming back from deployment.

A friend of mine that served in VietNam slept with a 45 under his pillow for years after returning. He also kept it loaded. He scared the crap out of his family many times waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat with that gun in hand. I would not wish that on anyone.

I agree wholeheartedly that there need to be accomodations made for the mental well-being of ALL officers, not JUST at home, but in the field… when it just gets to be too much, there needs to be someone right there to catch them… HOWEVER… There is NO excuse for the actions of these individuals.
If Bush had been in office, he would have been CRUCIFIED for “letting this happen” and yet everyone just hollers “Peace” at Obama… I will NEVER say anything negative about our President, as God has allowed him to be placed in authority over our nation, and that position demands respect. NOT because I respect him, but b/c God commands it… That being said, folks… we need to pray for this nation… DESPERATELY… we are headed into irreversible chaos if God doesn’t get a handle on this Country… Forget God Bless America… America, Bless God!!!

We as American’s need to wake up and realize we are too PC and go back to the ways of old where we are proud of our country. If you don’t like it, don’t do it, if it hurts your feelings too bad don’t listen to it. We need to beef up. God Bless America and the men and women who fight to keep us free and safe.

It makes me sad that so many people are so quick to say something, when none of us even really know what happened. All of our soldiers are overly exhausted and some have problems yes, but that doesn’t mean that they are killing machines. They are trained to DEFEND. Grow up, would you. In a time like this people are suppose to come together like family, not make accusations of our military. And a military without guns….? Are you for real? What do you purpose they use, cooking utensils? Be real.

Mass killings happen all the time, and most are not done by people in the military. Lots of high school shootings. Should we take all the kids out of high school? Please. You haven’t seen anything near what you would see in the USA if we were not over there. Remember 9/11…THAT was a mass killing caused by terrorists.

Thank God YOU are not a soldier. That kind of thinking we don’t need in our military. No matter why he snapped like that, he is just as much a victim as those he attacked. And no, I am NOT pointing any fingers. But he’s a victim, none-the-less.

It was worse it was home grown terrorism. One of the many ticking time bombs that have been homegrown on US soil. Facilitated by the fact that we entered into a war and failed to acknowledge and protect the ones we sent to do our bidding. We have failed these young men and women, failed to treat both their physical and mental wounds and for that we should all be ashamed. And this isn’t our current president’s fault. He’s just the one that we have elected to clean up the mess and I hope to hell he does and soon.

Some of us can handle the army life, and some of us can’t. I’ve been through deployments and tough times with my family (combat arms btw) and I haven’t come close to considering behavior like that nor do i understand why someone would do that. I wouldn’t blame the army, This guy definitely had other mental issues and I have no compassion or respect for such a selfish act.

My children have both served in Iraq. My friends husband’s are still serving there. My other daughter’s boyfriend just left for his THIRD deployment. They have all changed because of this war. I am not sure what to say — why someone would do this and turn on their own. My daughter said that it is common overseas too — their anger goes out to each other…. BUT, not to kill each other…. It is SO sad. I agree our troops are weary. They need rest — these LONG LONG deployments for Army have to be stopped. It is destroying them and their families. My daughter was medically discharged when she returned from Iraq and she is STILL waiting for benefits 10 months later! Do you think that helps her mind –?? She is already so sick with cancer — and no money and all those years she gave to the military and Iraq — just gone! BUT, I don’t think she would go into a Post with guns and kill the very people that she needs to support her. This is sad and my heart goes out to all the famlies of these soldiers. They are ALL in my prayers and I don’t even know their names.
