The books & teachings of every major religion in the world (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Mormon, etc.) condemn any sex outside of marriage & expressly condemn homosexuality.
Our Declaration of Independence refers to Nature's God & states "that all men are...endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights..." Our Creator is God. His book is the Bible. Homosexuality is condemned in numerous passages in both the Old & New Testaments.
In man's law, we discriminate against marriage based on sex, age, genetic relationships, genetics, number & consent. If we amend man's law to delete discrimination based on sex, we must also amend it to delete discrimination based on the other 5. Do we want to allow marriage for children, between incestual siblings &/or parents, between owners & their pets, polygamy & fathers of pregnant daughters with shotguns?
Marriage is very simple. It's between two consenting unrelated human adults of the opposite sex.
Children are the most deserving of rights, not to be denied the opportunity to have both a MOTHER & a FATHER as their family when at all possible.

Why do some people insist on highjacking words that have had a dictionary and commonly accepted definition for longer than my current age of 67 years? Gay, African-American, and marriage are a few of the words that have been placed in such a conudrum. Is a gay person happy or homosexual, an African-American any black in the USA or a USA citizen born in Africa or a person who has one parent from Africa and and one from the USA, and is a marriage a legal union between a man and woman or just a legal union between man/woman, woman/woman, and/or man/man? My preferences are: happy, USA citizen born in Africa or a person with one parent from Africa and one from the USA, and man/woman which is the only way the species is perpetuated naturally. What are your views? Note that homosexual, black, and legal domestic partners convey the same construct.

A lot can change in a year. I wouldn't read too much into any of these results. There is anti-incumbent mood in the country right now which is largely a result of the continuing economic woes. The Democrats won in '06 and '08 because of this, not an embrace of anything they actually stood for. If economic conditions improve chances are that the Congressional balance won't shift too much in 2010. If things take a turn for the worse, then the Republicans can probably win back the House and take back a few seats in the Senate. The off year is always the year when the ruling party wants to take on the unpopular issues; so, chances are that the Dems will back off somewhat next year. Either way, the Republicans pick up seats. I was never really sure where the more liberal types got the idea that Obama was going to be this vastly different sort of President (aside from the word Change plastered all over the place which really meant nothing). He has always seemed to be pretty much a generic middle-of-the-road Democrat to me. My prediction was that he would be the most boring President of my lifetime once all the hoopla about his skin color and non-Western sounding name died down and he seems to be living up to it. This is not all bad since the last two Presidents were particularly non-boring, often not in a good way. But I wouldn't mind seeing a middle of the road Republican candidate. There is a real danger that the Republican party turns into a circus. It was one thing when the circus was limited to the talk radio crowd that likes to get worked upp into a froth, but it now seems to have taken over the larger discourse. America probably is more conservative than liberal. However, too much arguing will likely throw votes to the Democrats at a time when the Republicans really need to unite. There is a lesson to be learned from NY23.

During the presidential elections, Obama showed that he knows how to avoid the big mistake and he knows how to time things. Don't be surprised if come this time next year he is riding high again.

I Report at 3:37...spot on. Amazing that the graft in Atlanta continues without any real outrage (guess that is what is called "resignation"). Easiest thing to do is sell the airport and end the gravy train, certainly it could be run more efficiently (i.e., without so much bid rigging, etc.) by private sector. Why should the City run it? (other than for the graft and favorites it has played for multiple mayoral administration). Maybe the one fellow's lawsuit on the advertising contract at the airport will bring more things to light, we can hope.

@ Willie:

1) The racial hatred in Atlanta does not exist in all quarters; for the preponderance of the populace, qualifications are the key issue. If Mary Norwood is qualified and elected, so be it! I just want someone representative of my concerns and acts upon them!!

2) "Christian America" is an oxymoronic phrase; if this country were truly a Christian nation, slavery would not have existed, bigotry would not existed, religious persecution would not have existed!! Whatever a person/couple does in the privacy of their own abode should not matter to anyone else....as long at it is consenting and legal!! Remember the old joke: Why should gay marriage be legal? They should be allowed to be as miserable as everyone else!!

3) Conservatism has a racist tinge in it; that should be discredited....but the preponderance of the GOP believes in it!! That's why many people who are of a liberal bent are such!! There are conservative principles in a liberal ideology...but the GOP does not recognize that fact! Isn't charity a conservative/Christian idea?? Isn't providing for the public good a conservative/Christian idea??

@ pat: Treaties primarily focus on contract law and recognition of such....and marriage is a recognizable contract worldwide!! The US Constitution supercedes international treties when based upon an American citizen...unless a criminal act is performed in the host nation!!

@ S A Alinsky: So you respect bigotry? How sad!!

The gays in Maine! The gays across America. They want their behavior to be accepted as normal! It is not! Never will be! You can be gay but you can not be "normal". You might pass laws and hate crimes but it will never be accepted as “normal” in a Christain America. Well you can ask a muslim if it is normal for that matter.

Soon the racial slurs by a bigoted Atlanta will spill out soon against Norwood. There is no stopping it. The bigots in Atlanta have survived that way for decades and it is not going to stop–not while jessie jackson, al sharpton, and the NAACP gets tv time.

I believe Scozzafava was a wolf in sheep's clothing. That is what I have stated about many republicans. They were liberals disguising themselves as conservatives to win offices. They were successful! The conservatives got blind sided. Atlas, awakened the sleeping giant. There is change in the air to save America and it smells like conservatism.
