A little Sunday morning on a Friday evening

I love oldtime black gospel; when I’m in the house alone, I’ll put on a couple of CDs and crank it loud and lose myself in the power and the glory. Gospel provided the foundation of soul music, jazz, blues, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll, but none of those genres ever outshines the original form.

Some of the best of the archival material was collected and made available by the Smithsonian, such as this piece. Those of you who know your Dylan will recognize it immediately.

But here’s a song more apropos of this rainy Friday, by the inimitable Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Didn’t it rain, didn’t it rain. If this don’t get your spirit and your feet moving, call the coroner cuz you dead.

Ok Normal it’s a tear jerker, (classic “chick” flick). It was originally done in the 30’s, however the most classic rendition is with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The greatest line of the film is “It’s the closest thing to heaven that we have in New York.” (when talking about the Empire State Building.

Section 2531, entitled “Medical Liability Alternatives,” establishes an incentive program for states to adopt and implement alternatives to medical liability litigation. [But]…… a state is not eligible for the incentive payments if that state puts a law on the books that limits attorneys’ fees or imposes caps on damages.

Jay, for your black gospel library get the CD from the old PBS program “Say Amen, Somebody”. It is the mainly the story of Thomas Dorsey, who many consider the father of black gospel. (There is a Dorsey museum in Villa Rica, his hometown, you can check out).
The man was active in the business for over 70 years.

Sarah Palin hates you.

She hates your smug elitist lower-48 ways because, when you come from Wasilla, everyone from the lower-48 is an elitist. You laugh at the way she talks and at her snowbilly ways. You are unaroused by her fading physical charms. But mostly she hates that you can see though her and recognize her for the venal grasping fraudulent second-rater that she is.

So she is going to make a sh_tload of money just to show you who is extra special awesome. She is going to collect her royalty checks and her speaking fees and she is going to let people fly her around the country (first class or private jet), put her up in luxurious hotel suites, and take her to fabulous restaurants. She will have people standing by just waiting to run and fetch her a stack of fashion magazines (which ones? all of them!) and a skinny white mocha latte. And if the PNAC guys want her to run for office, hey, it’s their dime, and it sure beats the sh_t out of gutting fish, making moose jerky, and changing Trig diapers.

As God is her witness, she’s never going to settle for Wasilla again.

wiccan, yeah. It really is beautiful. That shimmering, fragile little lead guitar figure, the folkies-hanging-around-a-campfire feeling, the bit of moodiness, the notion that maybe something’s going to come around and break up the fellowship. It all works so well together on that track.

I admit to having felt a bit embarrassed by it when I was first listening to the Velvets — why are they singing about Jesus? is this a joke? — but really, so much of Lou Reed’s work is about seeking redemption of one form or another.
