Recession’s technically over, even if it doesn’t feel that way
Well, nobody’s throwing a tickertape parade, but ….
(Bloomberg) The U.S. economy grew in the third quarter for the first time in more than a year, propelled by stimulus-driven gains in consumer spending and home building.
The world’s largest economy expanded at a 3.5 percent pace from July through September, exceeding the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News, after shrinking the previous four quarters, figures from the Commerce Department showed today in Washington. Household purchases climbed 3.4 percent, the most in more than two years….
“A lot of this is thanks to government support,” Kathleen Stephansen, chief economist at Aladdin Capital Holdings LLC in Stamford, Connecticut, said in an interview on Bloomberg Television. “The consumer, in fact private demand in general, is not ready yet to pick up the growth baton from the government.”
It doesn’t mean the worst is over. There’s an awful lot of pain out there, and some of it will never go away. Jobs lost, businesses lost, careers lost, in some cases marriages and even lives lost. But at some point things stop getting worse and start getting better, and maybe we’re at that point.

As I stated some time back the recession is over for everyone but the unemployed. I’d like to amend that to include government tax collectors. The reductions are so dramatic it makes me wonder if compliance has lapsed, as well.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — A total of 690,000 new vehicles were sold under the Cash for Clunkers program last summer, but only 125,000 of those were vehicles that would not have been sold anyway, according to an analysis released Wednesday by the automotive Web site Edmunds.com.
Still, auto sales contributed heavily to the economy’s expansion in the third quarter, adding 1.7 percentage points to the nation’s gross domestic product growth.
Add to that the $8000 dollar first time home buyer tax credit and it is no wonder the world is fleeing from the dollar.
We have a huge crash coming that will make this look like nirvana.

Well, howdy everybody, it’s me taking a break from lugging in all that beer you drunks pour down your gullets.
I knowed in my heart that what My President done before he left office would sooner or later turn the economy around. In spite of what this Kenyan’s been doing to try to put it right down the tubes. This stimulus didn’t have nothing to do with it. It’s Trickle Down you’re seeing in these good numbers. The rich folk run out of places to store all that money they got from My President’s tax cuts and decided to go ahead and spend some of it. Besides, the price of bulldozers to pile the stuff up done shot thru the roof.
And don’t let them fool you. There’s plenty of jobs out there. Just in the past couple days I saw notices for fry cooks at McDonalds and greeters at WalMart. If you unemployed bums would get off of your duff and go apply for one of these jobs, you might could work your way up to handling a drive-thru window at Mickey D’s or running a cash register at WalMart. But you got to be ready to start at the bottom first.
Anyway, it’s too bad some of you voted for this Obama. He’ll slow things up considerable. But sooner or later Trickle Down will put us all in high cotton. And I don’t mean to be accused of being a Bigot for using that term.
Anyhow, get off of the dole and get out there and get one of them jobs. And have a good p.m. everybody.

There is still lots of consumer and business deleveraging to be done. Money will be spent to pay down debts of the boom. The economic growth is due to stimulus spending. After the stimulus spending has dried up, the anemic growth will commence again.

As witnessed by the postings, the subject of this blog his done nothing but given the so-called conservatives more room to complain.
It was not good enough the previous administration had stewardship over the loss of more than 7 million jobs, yet they complain about the situation getting better economically.
It’s not that they can’t read, it is clear that they refuse to accept situations that are beginning to show promise. This “bright” outlook allows the sun to shine in on their dreary souls. [B]anks and borrowers still do battle over foreclosures on an unlevel playing field that exists in far too many courtrooms. But some judges are starting to scrutinize the rules-don’t-matter methods used by lenders and their lawyers in the recent foreclosure wave. On occasion, lenders are even getting slapped around a bit.
One surprising smackdown occurred on Oct. 9 in federal bankruptcy court in the Southern District of New York. Ruling that a lender, PHH Mortgage, hadn’t proved its claim to a delinquent borrower’s home in White Plains, Judge Robert D. Drain wiped out a $461,263 mortgage debt on the property. That’s right: the mortgage debt disappeared, via a court order.
So the ruling may put a new dynamic in play in the foreclosure mess: If the lender can’t come forward with proof of ownership, and judges don’t look kindly on that, then borrowers may have a stronger hand to play in court and, apparently, may even be able to stay in their homes mortgage-free.

I just finished a bus tour with my fellow veterans to promote clean energy as a way to break our dependence on Middle East oil, and I wanted to give you the rundown and send some of my favorite news articles about it.
Because of this tour, I got to know fellow veterans around the country, united with a common mission in a cause we believe in. We’re out of uniform but our service continues. The reception we received across the country was overwhelmingly positive and supportive. Even President Obama gave us a shout out in a speech last week on solving our energy problem! Americans of all generations across the country really connected with our message, and went out of their way to thank us for our service (in and out of uniform).
The media coverage was outstanding.
Not only was this tour useful for positively affecting change, but I noticed many of our fellow veterans become confident and effective public speakers and messengers. Face a little reality here, Pal. A lot of business owners care a lot for their employees. Sometimes you sound like you have bought into the liberal’s BS completely. As long as “The Machine” keeps telling you that all rich people or all business owners are evil, there is little chance of anyone understanding the real problems.
No, business owners don’t give away money. They use that money to pay their employees and pay taxes and supply those employees with benefits. I have taken some real risks with my company, but never with it’s assets. My employees often make more than I make, especially in these hard times. But to hear you talk, they are nothing but a disposable assets to me.
My house has been mortgaged to pay my employees. I can’t help but wonder if you would mortgage your house to make sure your boss gets paid. Well would you? My accountant tells me how much I have made at the end of each quarter. First quarter this last year, I made zilch, nothing, not a dime. But every single employee was paid, every dime I owed them.
Of course the obvious question is: have you ever ran a business? Had employees that depend on you? My guess would be no.
Owning a company is ALWAYS an exercise in protecting your employees before protecting yourself. I can eat spaghetti and live off credit cards, but I can’t replace good employees.

Well, I hope the worst is over. But the ill effects will linger for a long time. Will it happen again? Not the exact same thing, but something else will. The ‘too big to fail’ institutions have gotten bigger. Real reform hasn’t happened. Regulators aren’t regulating and oversight’s still mostly undersight. And as long as there’s not a law or a regulation to prevent it, people will forget ‘right’ and do whatever lines their pockets. And the more outrageous it is, the better.

I don’t care how benevolent YOU are, if you have no customers you WILL eventually have to let your employees go.
When the Malden Mills (makers of Polar Fleece) building burned down they kept their employees on salary for a year or more while the new building was under construction…because they KNEW the market was there for their product. Kudos to them, but if their market had dried up in the interval…they WOULD have let those employees go, and their new building would be standing empty.
And personally, I’ve never said I think the rich are “evil” nor do I think so, but neither do I worship at their feet…I just have no blinders on as to how far their benevolence would go if their buyers quit buying their products/services

I’m not, and have never, “bashed” business owners. I just don’t worship at the altar of “trickle down” economics that says MY job depends on THEM. It does not. My job depends on the CUSTOMERS we BOTH rely on to pay us.
There would be no need for me to mortgage my house to pay my boss, because if the business is not earning enough money to pay him…*I* would already be out of a job and he would no longer BE my boss.
Would you quit your “job” as boss of your company to keep even 1 employee in a job? That’s the other side of the same question.
Business income and profits come from the “bottom” up. From the customers. No customers, no business, no income. But if the “boss” is rich enough, HE walks away scott free and his employees have to find new jobs…with businesses who DO have enough customers that they need to hire more employees.
Personally, I wouldn’t want to work for you. You seem far too hung up on your own importance to the company and not nearly enough on appreciating the people who keep you in business: YOUR CUSTOMERS.
I like a more customer oriented work environment.

His wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) were non-productive, costly and divisive.
Under his stewardship, the economy lost more than 7 million jobs. He took budget surpluses and projected budget surpluses and turned those into budget deficits.
His trickle-down tax cuts helped the pay differential between the rich and poor explode to record levels. The rich got richer and the rest of us got poorer. More than 17 million American children fell into poverty.
He trampled on our Constitution and the rights that we are supposed to enjoy. He spied on you and me.
He constantly touted his “protection of the American people” from future attacks. Shouldn’t the first question be, who was the Commander-In-Chief when the greatest attack on American soil since WWII?
Who was in charge in apprehending Osama bin Laden and where is he these days?
And, to make things worse, he used the Department of Justice and our political system to arrest and imprison the governor of the state of Alabama because Karl Rove was of the belief that Democrats always cheated on their voting practices, therefore Mr. Seigellman was guilty also.
My biggest complaint with President Obama is his quest to keep the political waters under control by not pursuing the criminals in the Bush Administration. Karl Rove and Dick Cheney being the most prominent.
This list could go on, but I need to allow others time and space to vent their displeasure with exhibited negative attitudes about President Obama.

I follow your point. It’s not a small business, but Circuit City is a prime example. I worked there for 6 years. During that time, the company decided to change focus and did away with appliance sales even though I think around 40% of store traffic was based on appliances. You really ARE clueless, aren’t you? Any financier invests in businesses. When those businesses make a profit, THEY make a profit. And how do businesses make a profit? By selling goods or services that there are customers for.
Give the money to the customers and they’ll spend it. Which makes the businesses profitable, which puts the money back in the pockets of the financiers.
I take back what I said about not wanting to work for you…I’m GLAD I don’t work for you.

I think the point Doggone is trying to make is that without customers, no business will succeed. No customers = no business. Paying your workers enough to become your customers will help keep the business running, but that will happen only if your business has a product that your workers need.

Your shallow grasp of the world makes me sad. Yes, when a person invests in a business, they earn a share of the profits (they also frequently lose their investment, something you have never seemed to consider.)

Congratulations to NASCAR for initating the first 747 Laptop Using Pilot derby.

Although it was put in motino when H1N1 went to camp this summer by equally ignorant prescribing physicians and parents, Tamiflu resistant H1N1 is on the move. Relenza isn’t mentioned, but the same thing is in motion for the other drug that can treat H1N1 if given with 2 days of the symptoms (usually hacking cough and fever are the main ones) and 5-7 days of the prodrome.
Anyone with H1N1 is shedding virus 5- 14 days after they get “well” according to several recent studies of shedding, but everyone’s ignoring that fact, and this will help the spread. Shedding isn’t synonymous precisely with spread, however if someone sheds the virus for two weeks they are contageous after symptoms stop for x amount of days.
H1N1 and were treated with Tamiflu, while *****600 other campers and staff took the antiviral***** “to prevent” the illness.
Two females who shared a cabin developed symptoms after starting on Tamiflu and were later found to have a virus with two viral mutations that rendered them resistant to the drug. The mutated virus was not found in other people tested.

All the Repubos who are insurance company hookers would get an educatino reading this Breast Cancer patient blog. Two drugs in particular that can cost 200 grand a year or more and are in a class of drugs called biologic drugs also used for RA (Rhematoid Arthritis), Chrohns Diseas. They treat metatastatic breast cancer and keep a large number of women alive. They are antibody receptor specific, so they do not destroy cells and cause the signficant side effects and discomfort of traditional chemothreapy.

Pelosi’s bill put up for whip count this morning with a 3PM deadline does not pay for these drugs, and the need for them can cause a woman to have to lose everything she owns and her home.

The truth is that consumers have far more options for spending their money than ever before and the odds that your employees pay will somehow end up back in the company’s profits are tiny.

NIF: It’s pointless to try & explain how business works to these people. Most of the “contributors” to this blog think they are owed a job, and profits are “evil.” When asked, they can’t read a P&L, determine any of the common ratios (profit margin) without turning to Keith Olberman for his insight. And he never created anything, either.
90% of the employers in this country have 5 or less employees. Small business makes this country run. Yet all you hear about is big business screwing the little guy. Well, if your getting screwed, get another job, dolt! Better yet, open your own shop!

The government did its job. A lot of businesses have made a lot of profit from stimulus money. Its their turn to pick up the ball and use those profits for hiring, rather than profit taking and distributions to shareholders.
The growth in the last quarter is about 75 percent higher than the average of the entire previous administration’s 2 percent, and come close to the average growth rate that the American economy experienced during the years between 1950 and 1979, 3.9 percent.
Evidence that the Keynesian concept of the government picking up the ball when the private sector drops it works rather well.
What we are still not seeing is the businesses which have profited from the stimulus turning around and actually using this profit as an opportunity to lower unemployment and create enough employees to turn them into consumers again.

Businesses with a 5% profit cannot make customers out of thin air. You have to put money in the consumers’ pockets as well. Cash for Clunkers was backwards, and contradicts the Keynesian point.

Small business does employ most people in this country. A rather amazing fact, when small businesses make up about 7.9 percent of all businesses in the country.
When liberals rant about businesses, they are not ranting against small businesses. In fact, the most small business friendly Senator in the Senate has been John Kerry.
Every time he has attempted to sponsor or offer legislation that is designed to help small businesses, it is usually opposed, or amended to death by Republicans who amend it in such ways that most of the legislation ends up theoretically being available to small businesses, but in actuality can only be accessed by large corporations.
No liberal actually resents a small businessman who goes to work every day and works alongside or in some way with the people they have hired to work for them.
What is resented, as John Edwards pointed out, is a bunch of people who sit on their asses and make a living off of the paper investments they have.
Liberals do not much like the amount of money that is spent looking after the economic interests of those huge corporations, in America, and overseas, that are NOT responsible for 70 percent of the jobs that are created in America. Most liberal and Democrats are rather small business friendly and if you ever read the original versions of the legislation they propose, you would note that the original legislation usually exempts almost all small businesses from negative effects. Most of the small business assistance legislation in the last two decades came out of Kerry’s office and committee.
Largely the Chamber of Commerce does not like Kerry. Largely because he tends to favor small self owned businesses to larger corporations.
It is rather unfortunate that many small business owners tend to think that business friendly means small business friendly.
Under Clinton, most of the job creation came because of policies that tended to actually be small business friendly in fact, rather than superficially being “all business” friendly but which created conditions that were not terribly friendly to small businesses because the bar to make use of those laws was set too high for the bottom 98 percent of small businesses to access.
Small businesses will always end up paying higher rates of taxation, at all levels, federal, state and local, than larger businesses end up paying, if they pay at all.
A good example. Before Bush came to office and during the period in which the Democrats still held congress (2000-2002). If you were “self employed” and were running a small business by yourself with no employees you did not have to pay Social Security on the first 30,000 dollars of income you earned and took for yourself out of the business. After 2002 this exemption vanished.
Many other little details like this get ignored, but small businesses do tend to do better while Democrats are in office, rather than when Republicans are.

In the last 3 weeks the senate has tried to pass an unemployment extension for Americans unemployed through NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN. We sent trillions to Afghanistan and Iraq….just passed 7 billion for aid to Pakistan…a raise for congressional staff…
and 750 billion for Wall st bailouts. But for 3 weeks republicans have blocked extension of unemployment for millions of Americans out of work. They want to add pork barrel spending to the extension and are playing politics with the suffering of unemployed. As a result of these delays, millions of Americans , REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT ,will face a bleak Thanksgiving and Christmas.Many will lose their homes, cars, and all hope. They literally face starvation! THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN IN AMERICA!! Please call the Senate minority leader’s office and tell republicans to stop blocking the unemployment extension ! I volunteer at a local food bank. They are running out of food and aid for the overwhelming number of unemployed families who are in need.
We can’t keep up with the demand and the news media is not reporting this, so donations are not there. I can’t help but believe the American people would help more if they knew the urgency.
If you can donate time or money to local food banks or churches who help the poor or make a phone call please do.

Jay, If you look at how the numbers were presented on the books–a lot of the growth occurred by keeping only the consumer side of the Cash for Clunkers program on the books–If you really look at those numbers we did not grow and it was mickey mouse accounting that made it appear like growth. All the money that went to pay for the “growth” was not included in the growth projections. We actually went further and further in debt.
