President pays respects to America’s fallen

Obama Fallen Soldiers

President Obama went to Dover, Del. in the wee hours of the morning to greet the returning bodies of U.S. servicemen killed overseas. He also met privately with the families of the fallen for a reported two hours.

He needed to do that. As commander in chief, he honored the sacrifice of those under his command. As president, he expressed the gratitude of the nation not just to those fallen but to all who risk their lives for the country. And as a human being, he saw and felt first hand the consequences of the decisions he is making. It’s a weight every wartime president must carry.

I continue to search for a convincing argument that Afghanistan can be “won.” I haven’t found it yet, and if someone comes across one, let me know. Even Gen. McCrystal’s assessment was pretty pessimistic if you read it. I’d love to sit McChrystal down and ask him one very private question: If we follow your advice, what do you think the chances that in 10 years, Afghanistan will be a peaceful, self-governing nation that offers no harbor for Islamic terrorism?

Forty percent? Eighty percent? It’s sure as hell not 100 percent.

As an AP story pointed out, the U.S. and its allies already outnumber the Taliban forces by 12-1, yet as McChrystal acknowledges, we’re still losing ground. The inherent corruption in Afghanistan and our status as a profoundly alien presence are obstacles that sheer manpower cannot overcome.

I do see a lot of arguments in effect describing Afghanistan as “a test of our will and toughness.” It is so much more important than that, and justifiying it in those terms is profoundly wrong. We’re not bringing those caskets back to Dover as a way to prove our toughness. At least I hope we’re not.

Here’s an AP video of the ceremony early this morning.

I say pull the troops out and stop screwing with our CIA. Let them do their jobs and let them kill the people who did the deeds. The cowards who financed it need to live in fear for their lives and our current policy means that they need not fear unless they hear the American Army at the edge of town. Use the drones. Use whatever sneaky, clandestine equipment we have to make them fear for their lives every single day.

Yo Jay, why does the Urinal Constitution not have a special run on the conviction of the Black Mayor of Brimingham Alabama, with vendors out in the streets of Atlanta yelling to “Read all about it, Black Mayor convicted of Bribery”? Thanks for the response, Doggone/GA. I checked:

The Naval Officer’s Guide, Mack, W. P. and Paulsen, T. D., 10th edition, 1991

Army Officer’s Guide, Crocker, L. P., 46th edition, 1977

Naval Ceremonies, Customs, and Traditions, Mack, W. P., Connell, R. W., 1980

Service Etiquette, Swartz, O. D., 4th edition, 1988

and the only reference I could find is that when the President receives a salute, he is ‘expected’ to return it, but can choose to respond with a head nod or do nothing. That implies a rendering hand-over-heart salute in civvies, as opposed to returning a salute.

Where did you find that information?

Comparing wars to recessions is like comparing elephants to p-nuts (pun intended)

Yes, Bush caused the recession by his actions through his administration. If the economy improves, and if the stimulas packages Obama started was proven to help, then yes, he gets the claim because of his actions.

dear, if I’m dim-witted, that makes you a black hole.

as far as quoting far left sites – ABC is far left? VOA is far left? the fact is, the guardian article was correct and you were wrong – last year was NOT the most promising in Afghanistan. too bad you’re not man enough to acknowledge your error. (as I said to TnG, I wasn’t holding my breath)

as for incomplete training, you are right – he did finish his training, he just decided to leave before his actual SERVICE was completed (and, whoda thunk, there are no records to show that he made up the time later)

When Bush moved to Alabama in May of 1972, he was supposed to report for duty at the 187th Tactical Recon Group in Montgomery Alabama. But the unit’s commander at the time, retired Gen. William Turnipseed, was quoted by several news organizations as saying he had no recollection of Bush showing up. “I had been in Texas, done my flight training there. If we had had a first lieutenant from Texas, I would have remembered,” the Globe quoted him saying. This is the source of the charge that Bush was AWOL (Absent Without Leave).

But while Bush himself later was quoted directly by the Dallas Morning News as admitting he missed some weekend drills while in Alabama, he claimed to have made them up afterward. “I was there on a temporary assignment and fulfilled my weekends at one period of time,” he said. “I made up some missed weekends….I can’t remember what I did, but I wasn’t flying because they didn’t have the same airplanes. I fulfilled my obligations.”

Shame on you! I thought you were bigger than that. Can’t you at least give him the benefit of a doubt?

I am giving him the benefit of the doubt. With each day that passes, I’m doubting he has what it takes to make the tough decisions. Here’s some of what he said during the campaign (to get himself elected).

“We’ve got to get the job done there and that requires us to have enough troops so that we’re not just air-raiding villages.”

“The Afghan government needs to do more. But we have to understand that the situation is precarious and urgent here in Afghanistan. And I believe this has to be our central focus, the central front, on our battle against terrorism,” Obama — CBS “Face the Nation”

So what’s changed since then, TnG?

Don’t talk to me about public opinion. Public opinion was against Bush’s war in Iraq, but still he moved forward, and Iraq is a relative success. What’s relative? The insurgents swarmed into Iraq to make their bones. Once the surge took effect, they were out of there into the vast unknown of what is Afghanistan/Pakistan.

He has two choices…either he’s gonna pursue the enemy (he said he was) or he’s not. Either decision comes with dire consequences. He needs to make one…not sit on his a$$ lookin’ “insightful”. He has no insight other than what can be seen by the Generals on the ground. They have spoken. Gates has spoken.

I would prefer there not to be a safe haven for those who wish us ill. And I wish there was a way to help the Afghan people find peace and stability. But after 8 years I don’t see the benefit of sacrificing more lives or money in Afghanistan.

I am for doing what we can to shore up the Pakistani government for two reasons. One is they have nuclear arms that could fall into the hands of terrorists or rogue states. Second, instability in Pakistan will trigger a response from India, another nuclear power. We don’t need to see yet another conflict in that region.

I am all for enhancing our intelligence capability provided we do so consistent with our laws, values and Constitution. The whole argument that we had to go into Afghanistan to root out the perpetrators of 9-11 would not exist if 9-11 had been prevented. Had the President, Vice President, Security Advisor Rice, etc. taken the briefing just a week before 9-11 warning of Al-Qaeda’s plans to attack seriously and taken steps to counter the threat would we even be having this discussion?

We cannot be the policeman of the world. Our nation is in shambles because of our adventurism abroad. The Bay Bridge is closed and they estimate there are thousands of bridges that are in need to urgent repair. We have millions without healthcare. Our educational system is in a crisis. We could use the human manpower being used to fight the Afghan and Iraq wars for better good. We could use the money being spend on these foreign wars for better good.

Back at you Mr. 21 percenter. Where do you get 19%? Here’s how I back up my statement:

40% of Americans interviewed in national Gallup Poll surveys describe their political views as conservative, 35% as moderate, and 21% as liberal. This represents a slight increase for conservatism in the U.S. since 2008, returning it to a level last seen in 2004.

You’re a one-trick pony TP. Try another horse and make yourself relevant.

Bush – Huge deficits, rising unemployment, US casualties in Middle East for nothing = horrible, impeachable offenses worthy of criminal prosecution. Obama – Huge deficits, rising unemployment, US casualties in Middle East for nothing = best President ever, should be re-elected in a landslide. It’s that simple.

S.A.: We cannot be the policeman of the world. Our nation is in shambles because of our adventurism abroad.

We can’t and we shouldn’t be. I feel the other nations don’t want to commit because they feel that the US SHOULD do everything by themselves, while the world reaps the benefit. We have to clean up our own back yard before we attempt to clean up someone else’s. Billions (with a B) of dollars per year for the past EIGHT YEARS with nothing new to show for it. It’s time to call it quits.

@@: Shiite or get off the pot. I’m beginning to suspect he’s chillin’ on the weed while Afghanistan goes to seed.

PLEASE……. –ummmmm….. just PLEASE!! Trying to be “hip” after 25 is soooo hard to do!! The best you can hope for is to wait until you’re 40 then you can kick it “old school” and be considered hip to the “youngsters”.

Normal at 11:39 Bush didn’t cause the recession. Right before it hit, Bill Clinton BRAGGED about & took credit for the “staggering” “$800 billion” in subprime loans made during his adm. He also admitted the Dems resisted efforts by the Reps to regulate the culprits.

Are we just to walk away and let the Taliban regain power? What a sad day that would be.

Linda – When Bush was asked about the deficit spending during his first recession, the dotcom bubble – 9/11 one in 2001, he responded, “we had a recession, we were attacked, and we are at war”. what he failed to mention was in the face of all that he gave the rich a huge tax cut. As for his second, the current huge disaster, there are lots of guilty parties, Clinton, Frank, Dowd, Dugan, Greenspan, Bush, Fannie and Freddie, Bear Stearns, greedy banks and mortgage loan companies, the CRA, all contributed.

Another day of the same rep-ugant and underachieving parasit dim-wit hate rhetoric. The subjects changes, thanks to Jay, but the hate rhetoric is always the same. I just wanted to comment that I think Lord Obozo finally got it right, just buy Afgan loyality! The plan has a proven history of success with the dem-wit parasites in the ole US of A.

I see that the conservative ranters are out in full force again today. I think what makes these White, male(mostly) Southerners so angry are the fact that we have a liberal Democrat as President. For some, it’s the fact that we have a liberal black man as President. Remember, Obama is now further along into his first term than Bush II was on September 11, 2001 and we haven’t been attacked. Also, today it was reported the third quarter GDP grew by 3.5%, the first quarterly increase in the last 5 quarters, endind the longest recession since WWII. Growth was fueled in large part by the stimulus package passed earlier this year, most of the money from the stimulus package has not yet been spent, so more money spent from the stimulus should help the economy keep growing into next year. For the conservatives that post and rant repeatedly on the AJC’s blogs, follow the news more closely, diversify your news sources and stop repeating the rhetoric and generalizations of the people that you allow to influence your thinking. And also, you(mostly) guys don’t strike me as being the most pleasant people to be around. Try to state facts, not repeated diatribes. For me, at least, you conservatives are becoming very tiresome indeed.

Yo Sam, lets hope your liberal black man as president does not make like a liberal black mayor and start taking bribes, see Mario Barry (he took his bribes in Crack, he he he), Bill Campbell, Langsford – All convicted felons.

This needs to be brought up everyday 100 times until people understand that those bankers don’t produce money they just move it around (steal a little). We need people to produce something, you can not have a society of “money movers” you have to produce things. Businesses have to be forced to put thier profits back into the company, not take it for themselves. Do you know a small business in the US can have up to 999 employees and there are loop holes that allowes more? We are not a country of opportunity we are now SLAVES to a few aristocrats.
