It’s not peace in the Middle East, but it’s something

It’s been one of those days, but I still couldn’t help but crack a smile when I saw this report. (h/t TPM)

Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates and Cambridge police Sergeant James Crowley were spotted at a pub in Cambridge Wednesday night.

The owner of “River Gods” told WBZ the two sat in a booth together and talked for about an hour.

Over the summer, Crowley arrested Gates for disorderly conduct while responding to reports of a possible break-in at Gates’ home. Gates accused the officer of racial profiling.

Wonder how many would be upset if you were in your own house and had documented identification as to who you are and it shows you are at the address the police officer is physically located.

Disorderly conduct charge for a man that is upset because he is partially crippled and shows you his identification for his home at his address?

Hard to buy that one, but, truth is stranger than fiction.

Well, I think it was mighty kind of that cop to have a beer with one of Those People, even if he is uppity. I just hope the cop wasn’t on duty. Nothing worse than a drunk cop. You can sometimes reason with a sober cop, but not a drunk one.

I’m still a little took aback by a question this fellow asked downstairs about if I’d take out a loan on my trailer to help pay the salary of my boss. Heck, if I even learnt my boss had to take a loan out on his house to pay me, I’d be setting up about 20 job innerviews a day trying to get a new job before he fired me. Everybody knows the first thing to go in a co. in trouble is training. The 2nd thing to go is workers. Does this guy that asked the question think we’re all idiots?

Have a good day everybody.

**What NIF leaves out of his question is: if the business is dying from lack of customers would the boss STILL mortgage his house to pay his employees, **

Ahhh, . . . . yea. no one mortgages their house to meet payroll if the business is booming. Man, you really have NEVER even considered running a business, have you?

it’s all about having the spine to take the chances that will result in a successful business where employees can be paid and given a nice benefit pkg.

But what do you want? It sounds like you want the owner to take all the chances, create the market, extend his credit, borrow money for expansion, and then refuse any profit that might come his way. When the company does well, the employees get a nice bonus. In those years, I make a nice profit. Why do you have such a problem with that?

“no one mortgages their house to meet payroll if the business is booming”

And no one mortgages their house if the business is dying either. That would only happen if there’s a reasonable chance the business will pick up and the mortgage paid back.

“When the company does well, the employees get a nice bonus. In those years, I make a nice profit. Why do you have such a problem with that?”

Why do you think I said anything like that? I never did. What started this…AGAIN…was your question about working for a poor person. I don’t begrudge the bosses of successful businesses their income, or their bonuses – if honestly earned – or their success. What I do begrudge is the attitude that if it wasn’t for THEM *I* wouldn’t have a job.

Well, you know what? If it wasn’t for the CUSTOMERS, they wouldn’t have a job EITHER. Trickle down is based on the same false premise that leads you to repeatedly ask that question. Money, income, profits DON’T “trickle down” and never have. They RISE UP from the customers. Always have, always will.

**And no one mortgages their house if the business is dying either.**

Of course they do. I did. I knew that if I could hang on, I would make it work, which I did. it is a matter of having the confidence to know what you can do. But that’s true in every part of business. The house was an asset that I turned into a vehicle to finance my business until it could recover. Happens every day. I don’t mind you not answering the question. I knew that you wouldn’t. But you need to understand that yes, business owners put everything they have on the line and they do it every time that they need to do it.

**What I do begrudge is the attitude that if it wasn’t for THEM *I* wouldn’t have a job.**

Well, you wouldn’t have THAT job. There’s always other jobs, but whether you like it or not, when you work for someone else. without their taking the chances that it took to establish that business you would not have that job. It sounds like you need to start your own business. Meet a few payrolls. take a few chances. Do you think you could do it?

**They RISE UP from the customers. Always have, always will.**

Why do you put the customer on the bottom? They are the ultimate boss. They are my boss. And yes, they pay me and I pay the employees: t-r-i-c-k-l-e-d-o-w-n It’s the actual definition of trickle-down. The customer doesn’t pay the employees and they decide who gets what. Even if the employee takes the money (in my business, checks are sent to our accounting service), the money is turned over to a boss.

I know how touchy libs are about that trickle down thing, but Capitalism is based on trickle down. Your paycheck has trickled from the customer to your company to your boss to you. All downhill.

Yes, my grandmother had the new TV setting on top of the old TV. But saying that a person is a Redneck if their family tree doesn’t branch? No. That is progressing a bad stereotype.

Bill Cosby did the same thing, but his parodies didn’t do what Foxworthy’s parodies do. To Russell, my brother, whom I slept with was the name of a Cosby album People could identify with that without it being offensive. Cosby didn’t do jokes about unwed mothers, black men in prison. Those that are so touched by the two “enemies” sitting down together are missing the point altogether. Crowley was not the enemy. He was a police officer with no agenda or bias that was called to investigate a suspicious activity and when he got there, he was met by an irrational, egomaniacal man with a boulder on his shoulder ranting about racism. Maybe Gates came to understand he was the horses arse and is feeling a little foolish and he seeks some kind of reconcilliation. Maybe.

Yes. My church splits up the kids and the parents, too. Of course they all come together for the main service in the sanctuary, just like they do at Rev. Wright’s church.

Which book? PLEASE don’t tell me that you voted for Obama without knowing that he wrote his book called “The Audacity of Hope”, based on a sermon by Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Did you also know that the big controversy was not caused by FOX News slipping into a service. Did you know that it was caused by an ABC reporter ordering a DVD set from the church? This was their OUTREACH, not a secret, closed section of the church. It was and is the message that they want to represent their organization. Do you really think that they wouldn’t be teaching the kids the same racist garbage?

mike: “There’s only one definition of racism” Says who? You?

Wesbsters actually. But if you just wanna argue with someone, you can go online and hit their “comments” button and take it to them!!!

josef: The best? Oh, without a doubt, the cast and crew of Sordid Lives–now THAT’S us laughing at US

Never saw that one!! Is that on HBO? My favorite “southern” dramedy is the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries with Bill the Vampire, (I read the books first, then when I was online here I heard people talking about it — tuned in ONCE and was hooked!!). They do a “parody” of this black girl named Tara, (in the book she’s white), and she’s the ANGRIEST woman in AMERICA!! It’s sooo funny!! She reminds me of my cousin Sandra.

mike: Look we get it. You think that hurling bigoted and ignorant stereotypes at people who don’t share your political views is acceptable. Good for you.

Oh mike!!!!! (notice the !!! after your name!!!!), THANK GOD I have you to explain me!! You have just saved me from YEARS of wasted money on therapy. Bless you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NIF: I understand now why it bothers you. Forgive me for not seeing it your way; however, i understand your point.

The thing in his throat is an artificial voice box. My dad had one before he died. Try to set down and have a conversation with him. He will love it more than you can imagine because everyone is uncomfortable with it.

You are a good person for doing that, Debbie.

Parodies, stereotypes, etc..
Two of my favorite movies are “Missing” and “Waiting to Exhale.” In the first, Cissy Spacek plays her role speaking in her native dialect and at no point is that at issue. In the second, the cast, black, plays out a story in which at no point is race an issue. These are rarities in American cinema where, to speak Southern or to be Black, there must be a REASON…the characters can’t just BE…

Well, actually the Miriam-Webster site and Dictionary.com have different definitions. So as is empirically demonstrated, there is not only one definition of racist and you are wrong yet again.

Regardless, the notion that all thought processes around a complicated term such as “racist” are restricted to the three sentence definition found in Webster’s is child like. For example, look up the definition of the term “conservative” and tell me if it encompasses all reasonable uses of the term.

The shallowness of your thinking makes me sad.

Sordid Lives was both a film and a Logo series–Delta Burke in the movie and Rue McClanahan in the series…it’s told from the point of view of an aspiring gay actor in Hollywood talking to his shrink about his family in a small Texas town—

NIF: In all honesty, I never thought to ask him too many questions; it seems so hard sometimes for him to catch his breath and talk that i didn’t want to bother him, thanks for saying that though — I should’ve figured that out for myself. DUH!!

But if I had my way I’d still be a social worker, not an-almost-cold-blooded tax attorney. I miss social work, I miss helping people and I miss making a difference. I’m not a social worker anymore because I just couldn’t separate the job from my personal life. I’d take the job home with me every night until I just burned out. I witnessed one too many abused kids sent back to parents that ended up killing them and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I understand josef’s passion for teaching and i’m amazed that he hasn’t burned out on it after all his years in the field, and i ENVY him for the fact that he still loves what he does. How many people can say that after 10+ years in a field that’s been torpedoed by budget cuts, politicians blaming them, parents blaming them, and kids blaming them for everything that’s wrong in their lives?

Uggghhh I’m getting morbid!! Back to being flippant!!!

So, how about them GATORS!! Gonna spank that bulldog butt this weekend!! Go Gators!!

“The accent is not the issue. The issue is the characterization of a group’s intelligence, civility and morality and the intent of the writer.”

At a deeper level it is about the accent. All one has to do is use it and the malevolent, ignorant, bigoted/racist nature of the character is established with no further development necessary…

I was listening in on a group of priviledged elite, black and white, teenagers as they carried on their conversation in “Ebonics,” ever so cool. I must admit they had the fluency. Yet WHAT they were talking about was another matter. When I asked them a few questions of educated nature, they switched codes to clipped grammatically correct speech. Talkin’ trash was black. Talking the socio-political issues of the day was white.

Racism? Bigotry? Perhaps, but stereotyping certainly.

Mike,

Convert targets white southerners which he portrays as being dimwitted and ignorant. To me he is like a gnat; see it and brush it aside automatically without acknowledging it or its presence. He is just a sad little snipe and he is a cheap thrill and a circus clown for the liberals here that believe as he does . Best way to handle him, don’t acknowledge him. Acknowledgement is what he loves and he lives for. Without the acknowledgement by a few people here that don’t even know or care anything about him he is nothing. He is offensive but Jay won’t do anything about him so let him go man. I mean, Jay believes only minorities can be offended, certainly not white southerners. I am really surprised by how many people, like this dust ball, come here day in and day out all day long that truly seem to come for acknowledgement, for “friendship” and for personnal validation. On a blog for God’s sake? I mean, don’t they have real lives? We live in a sad time if this is all they have.

Ug. You’re a gator. I’m a Vol. Next year. The question is: will Tebo be too old to play for the NFL when he graduates.

Take it easy on the guy at the desk. it does take a lot for him to talk, but trust me, he will not mind talking to you.

The last time I was in a VA hospital, I was watching my Daddy die I’ve never mustered the courage to go back. I can’t even watch the commercials late at night about abused cats and dogs.

I really hate it when I find out that a liberal is actually a good person. NOW STOP IT!!!

Be good tonight.
