The problem with the last Bush tax cut voted into existence in January 2008, was that like all Republican tax cuts it gave about 46 percent of the 143 billion to the top two percent of income earners (a flat ten percent tax cut, the Republican standard tax cut, always is distributed in such a way that it gives almost half of all the money to those in the top two percent. That is always what happens when you give a flat rate tax cut distributed over a progressive tax system. The only way to eliminate that effect is to have tax cut that is progressive..giving larger percentages to those at the bottom than those at the top. All the last Bush tax cut did was fuel the speculative markets that drive the economy further into a market bubble cycle. The rich took their tax cut money and did not spend it on consumer goods but started looking for investments that would return a higher level of interest than simply sticking it into a savings account. About 66 billion out of the 143 billion dollars in the last Bush tax cut which was a pure Republican style cut, went to the top two percent of income earners. They didn't go out and spend it in the consumer markets, they went out and invested it in the same markets that were about to go belly up.

The largest single group that opposes health reform and government insurance are people who are on Medicare. Check the polls as divided by age group. They oppose government insurance by almost 70 percent, being totally unaware that their Medicare IS government insurance.

Nobody has said anything about the fact that Congress gave itself a big raise this year. I guess they didn't realize they didn't need it.

Jay, It gives me a glimmer of hope in the midst of a very grim picture when even a liberal like you acknowledges an act of lunacy on the part of Obama and the Democrats. Bill

Political Reality

Jay, there is no writer I respect more than you. But. (and to all the snide right wingers posting- pay attention).

EVERY President must deal with political realities. Reagan - (I can hear all the right wingers drop to their knees to worship his name) absolutely catered to the seniors as did Bush I, Clinton and yes, Bush Jr...

Does anyone remember George W. Bush sending out the stimulus checks about 1 1/2 ago? This money went to virtually everyone breathing.

So this money going to seniors does keep money in circulation (the seniors have to spend it as they have to pay light bills, etc).

So Obama is not selling the country down the road. He is dealing with political reality.
