More time? Gay and lesbian servicemembers have been waiting long enough, suffering through 8 years of executive and legislative branch leadership that offered zero hope for a DADT repeal. Meanwhile, the norms of society have changed dramatically and being a closeted gay person is no longer the most socially acceptable option. Gay and lesbian servicemembers find themselves in the uncomfortable position where they are not wholly welcomed in the LGBT community where being out is now taken for granted, nor are they accepted in the military community that does not tolerate them acknowledging the truth of their existance. It is a terrible position to place our servicemembers in and needs to be corrected immediately. After waiting for over a decade to get this law repealed, you now think it is OK to wait a little bit longer? I expect we'll wait long enough to let congressional Democrates lose their legislative majorities, and then we'll be stuck with this social injustice for another decade or more. It's OK though, gay and lesbian servicemembers have no voice in this matter because the policy prevents them from speaking about it. No complaints from servicemembers must mean that everything is working out, right?

El Jefe...14th amendment; specifically the Equal Protection Clause. But when it comes to the debate on gay marriage it's all about the civil law because within it there are 1,100 rights or obligations associated with marriage at just the Federal level that are unavailable to gays for basically no good reason. For example I can be forced to testify in court against my spouse of 18 years because we're not allowed to marry therefore not covered by the law that grants this right to married persons.

"can the gay community just pull out on this topic already?" No, we can't. There's always going to be some military mission to use as an excuse. Even the Israeli army accepts openly gay people and doesn't have issues with it. I think it's a hetero male thing to assume that just because they have a penis that all gay men want it. All women have breasts, but that doesn't mean that all men want every woman's breasts. The sad thing is that the gender of the people that a person wants to have sex with and/or form a committed relationship doesn't completely define who that person is yet this is exactly what those opposed to equal rights for gays tend to do. They focus on our penises or vaginas and how they're enjoyed instead of looking at us as HUMANS.

Its funny how liberals care only about particular topics in regards to the military. In fairness this topic should be put to bed. The ego on some of these men that think gays are going to want to flock to them.

If greg and greg want to kiss and touch each others gregs, then who am I judge?

That said, can the gay community just pull out on this topic already? I'd like to think our military has more important things to do, such as closing out Afghanistan than worrying about the deeper meaning of someone's bunkmate is waking up with morning wood.

NetBanker,

What rights under the Constitution is denied to gays?

Not civil law, but under the Constitution, since these are the only right enumerated and unenumerated guaranteed to all and serves as the basis of all law - or so it should be.

"What really matters to some people is that the rest of us embrace their sexual preferences." Acutally, Sluggo, gay folk could care less whether non-gays embrace their preference, lifestyle, or whatever else you want to call. What we want is EQUAL access to civil laws and the same anti-discrimination protections afforded to other groups (gender, race, religions, etc). The challenge is that people suddenly get all religious and want to talk about lifestyles and sin and whatnot which leads to them voting against anything that would provide equality to gays. But they don't worry about legislating other lifestyles or sins. For example adultry is a sin but there aren't any laws punishing adulterers (and of course there wouldn't be or 1/2 of Congress would be either fined or locked up). There aren't any laws that annual a heterosexual marriage when one partner has committed adultry or if the married couple are swingers. Why is it that the sex life of gay people is so important to so many people?

Doggone/GA, I do have a question for the minions of Al Gore.

How do we know what temperature it should be?
We might be too cool to begin with and we should be warmer still, how do we know?
Did the warming cause the oceans to release more CO2, or did the increase in CO2 cause the oceans to warm? (old chicken or egg argument)

The current President has trouble making decisions. Hand Congress the SEIU plan for health care -no problem - decisions on Afghanistan and DADT - whoa, I have to think about this.

Stimulus I, crises mode - Health care - crises mode - fast, fast, no time to think, just sit down and shut up. But, of course, he gave both of those to Congress to ram through.

Anyway, DADT, is a straw man issue anyway, nothing is stopping gays from serving their country. They just have to be discrete like everyone else.
