White House says it: Fox News not a legitimate news outlet

Running against the media has a long, rich history. Back in the ’30s and ’40s, Gene Talmadge would travel rural and small-town Georgia railing about “them lying Atlanta newspapers,” stirring the resentment of voters against those fancy-pants big-city folks always printing stories about corruption and other shenanigans. You see a variation of that still today, with candidates such as John Oxendine and Nathan Deal blaming the “liberal Atlanta media” for forcing them to take $120,000 in illegal campaign contributions or spout off about “ghetto grandmothers.”

At the national level, nobody played that game with more gusto than Richard Nixon and his attack dog of a vice president, Spiro Agnew, both of whom turned the media into punching bags. Agnew in particular became the mouthpiece for speechwriter William Safire, who penned such classic attack lines as “nattering nabobs of negativism.”

Traditionally, the tactic has been a favorite of conservatives, but with the advent of Fox News and talk radio, that has begun to change. Back in the ’90s, Hillary Clinton complained quite accurately about “a vast right-wing conspiracy” against her husband’s administration, and the Obama administration is taking that a step farther, publicly dismissing Fox News as a legitimate news outlet.

As White House communications director Anita Dunn told the New York Times:

“We’re going to treat them the way we would treat an opponent. As they are undertaking a war against Barack Obama and the White House, we don’t need to pretend that this is the way that legitimate news organizations behave.”

Dunn made similar charges in an appearance on CNN, claiming that “the reality of it is that Fox News often operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party.” The overall strategy, and the thinking behind it, is laid out in a http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1929058,00.html. After a series of overblown “controversies” such as the president’s decision to speak to schoolchildren, Obama officials decided a new approach was necessary:

“… rather than just giving reporters ammunition to “fact-check” Obama’s many critics, the White House decided it would become a player, issuing biting attacks on those pundits, politicians and outlets that make what the White House believes to be misleading or simply false claims, like the assertion that health-care reform would establish new “sex clinics” in schools. Obama, fresh from his vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, cheered on the effort, telling his aides he wanted to “call ‘em out.”

The take-no-prisoners turn has come as a surprise to some in the press, considering the largely favorable coverage that candidate Obama received last fall and given the President’s vows to lower the rhetorical temperature in Washington and not pay attention to cable hyperbole. Instead, the White House blog now issues regular denunciations of the Administration’s critics, including a recent post that announced “Fox lies” and suggested that the cable network was unpatriotic for criticizing Obama’s 2016 Olympics effort.

White House officials offer no apologies. “The best analogy is probably baseball,” says (White House press secretary Robert) Gibbs. “The only way to get somebody to stop crowding the plate is to throw a fastball at them. They move.”

Personally, I like the move by the Obama administration. It’s not going to change Fox’s behavior; to the contrary, Fox understands quite well that it benefits from being cast as Obama’s opponent. That’s its market niche, and it exploits it cleverly. Obama is merely acknowledging what everyone already knew, and adjusting his behavior accordingly.

Meanwhile, the AJC continues it’s role as DNC mouthpiece sans the research arm, they just pass along whatever the fax machine spews out.

The mere fact that Obama can’t stand what Fox is saying about him tells me they must be doing something right. After all, a liar in power can’t tolerate someone calling him out and letting the public know he’s wrong.

And let’s not forget that nearly every other mainstream news outlet will only paint Obama in a negative light after someone like Fox News or another outlet has already reported it and the lamestream knows their already terrible numbers will go down even further lest they report it. I guess the tactic of bashing the outlet getting the most viewers and highest ratings is still alive and well as evidenced by this column and by this paper. Plus, look where Dunn ran to cry: the New York Times and CNN, two of the administration’s biggest cheerleaders.

Didn’t she make that claim while saying it was all in the heads of her husband’s critics that Billy Jeff would ever have been foolish enough to have had an affair with an intern in the White House? That must have been a doozy of a conspiracy

ok, now you have lost it.
Just because this Anita Dunn says it doesn’t make it true. Of course, with Fox as the only outlet challenging Obama, it makes Fox a target of Obama and his cronies. They ‘punch back’ as it is the only target they have to swing at. Otherwise, without this Fox target, they run rampant, unchecked.

What is wrong with a little checking? And no, there was no right wing conspiracy.

You don’t mind Olbermann and Maddow going unhinged against the GOP do you? Of course not, you side with them.

I rather doubt the Fox News execs care one bit what the Obama Administration says. In fact, they may actually like the extra attention. As long as they continue to win the cable news wars (and folks, it’s not even close right now), Fox can laugh as they watch from their rear-view mirror. Do they have a slant? Sure, but mostly just in their personality shows. They aim those at conservatives, just as CNN and MSNBC aim at liberals. IF CNN or MSNBC were smart, they’d realize this and put on a legitimate conservative (Glenn Beck did very well at CNN, which must have eaten them up!) Perhaps Fox is on top because they don’t really have any competition…a rival network that would actually give conservatives a voice would probably cut into their ratings some. Too bad the other networks can’t bring themselves to give it a try…

The media, nor any of its flunky subsets, does not support the Democrats OR Republicans as their primary mission. Only as an avenue to keep the gleefully ignorant people entertained and uninformed.

Their primary mission is to peddle murder, shock and awe and mayhem. And assorted nonsensical non-news and salacious stupidity for the particularly vapid.

IF they did their jobs worth a sh_t, they would have long ago exposed the MASSIVE, long running corporate crime wave that has damn near ruined this nation. And which certainly has ruined an untold number of American lives.

But there’s this teensy weensy little problem with that – their bosses.

They merely PRETEND to do their job while their corporate overseers keep them in check and make HUGE dollars by diverting attention to the Barney Franks, Charlie Rangles, Tom Delays and innumerable other lower-level criminals.

They are in fact the American Politburo who deems who and what gets heard. And who and what don’t.

And they don’t even pay rent for using our airwaves.

The thing that has always disturbed me the most about FOX News and right-wing talk radio is how they continuously (it goes beyond continually) warn their viewers again the “liberal” (elite, mainstream, whatever) media. In other words, “Don’t go to any other source for your news and information, don’t read those liberal newspapers and magazines, no! And if you should happen by accident to hear any news or information that conflicts with what we tell you here, don’t believe it. They’re all liars. We are the only true source!”

Another thing FOX will do, instead of talking about an issue, they’ll talk about how other media cover the issue, so as to say, “See, told you those guys can’t be trusted. They reported this on the front page! They put this on the third page! They did not cover this at all!” And often this is not even true. But the viewers, who don’t go to other media sources, will never know.

There’s an interesting thing going on in Italy right now. The leader there is incredibly corrupt, but about 80% of the people think he’s great, because about 80% of the people get their news from television only, and guess who owns 95% of the television outlets? The leader! (The 20% who actually read newspapers or live abroad have a different viewpoint.)

So, this should be a lesson to those who only watch FOX or listen to right-wing talk, or hear any other sources only through the filter of disbelief: A democracy depends on an informed citizenry. If you’re so patriotic, maybe you should start listening, really listening, to the other side, and not automatically disbelieve everything you hear just because Rush or Glenn or Sean says something different. They could be the liars. They sure have always spent a lot of time trying to convince you that they other guys are. You should find something very suspect about that.

Can no one else see what happened after the election and inauguration? Almost literally, Fox (and the right-wingers on this blog) and CNN/MSNBC (and the left-wingers on this blog) simply swapped places. During Bush’s 8 years, every network’s coverage of his administration was overwhelmingly negative, except for Fox. Now, Fox is consistently negative in its coverage of the Obama administration, and the other networks are predominately positive.

I can hear the arguments that Bush was bad and therefore merited the negative coverage, and Obama is good, etc. However, the policies that engendered the most disdain for Bush (the war in Iraq and Afghanistan) have not changed between the administrations. Yet, the left mostly supports those policies (now that they’re advocated by one of their own), while the right opposes them (now that they’re Obama’s “policies.”) I feel like I’m trapped in some strange comedy that’s not really funny.

Now you just sound pathetic and desperate. I am guessing because leftwing media is dying a slow and painful death. There’s a reason Fox is number one, by a long way. Leftwing media outlets have been lying to them for so long, they are jaded. People don’t trust the media and they have plenty of reason for doing so.
You yourself are an unabashed left wing pundant who will happily manipulate facts to support your point of view.
Anyway, Fox is number one. It will remain so because they are the only people willing to challenge the establishment. Look at the whole ACORN debacle. CNN and the other left wing extremist media outlets did their level best to ignore and sink the story. If there was no Fox, this story would have never come to light.

It’s one thing to be a supporter of left wing policies, but it is clear that the left wing extremist media desires not only to support, but also to manipulate policy. They will lie cheat and steal to do it.

It matters little, people will keep turning on Fox and keep turning off everybody else. I turn on neither. I have not watched news on television in years. But if I do, I’ll turn Fox on to at least get the truth before I get the tainted festering leftwing puss from the other outlets.
Just reading the websites, I really can’t tell the difference between Al Jazeera and MSBC, CNN, AJC, etc. For my money the WSJ actually does to best and most fair and balanced reporting.

interesting article … but, really, nothing new … there have been articles about a jobless recovery for the last few months (such as “a recovery only a statistician could love” from the wapo) …

interesting thing to point out:

“It dated the beginning of the current recession as December 2007 — and hasn’t yet called an end.”

because they are extremely backwards-looking. they only declared the date of the beginning of the recession in their paper dated 11 December 2008. in other words, it took them a year to say when the recession started – they’re not going to declare the end of the recession until they can process months’ worth of data (my £££ is on this last quarter … I don’t think it’ll be Q2).

First the WH dismisses teabaggers as irrelevant (nazis), now they’re dismissing tens of thousands within the LBGT movement as irrelevant?

Yesterday, CNBC’s Chief Washington Correspondent John Harwood said that the Obama White House doesn’t view dissatisfaction amongst LGBT advocates — tens of thousands of whom marched in Washington, DC yesterday — as a “serious problem” because officials feel “that if they take care of the big issues — health care, energy, the economy — he’s [Obama] going to be just fine with this group.” As evidence, Harwood cited an anonymous “adviser” who bashed bloggers and dismissed critics as part of the “Internet left fringe”:

Mostly I read the newspaper, and I go to the editorial pages first and read both the conservative and liberal columnists, and what many don’t realize is that now, on the AJC editorial pages, the right leaning columnists far outnumber the left leaning. Left: Bookman, Tucker, Pitts, the occasional Friedman, the occasional guest columnist. Right: Wooten, Wingfield, Krauthammer, Parker, Barr, Wills, Sowell, Galloway, Brooks, various guest columnists.

Since Fox News became popular Republicans have been slaughtered at the polls. They lost control of the House, they lost control of the Senate, and Republicans lost control of the Presidency.

Fox just headlines different stories. To the point of ad nauseum in some cases.

It’s just me, but I believe that Fox News is just the Far Right’s version of “The Colbert Report”, but they don’t know it or get it.
It’s all just entertainment, folks. Remember the interactive TVs in Fahrenheit 451?

Look who’s calling the kettle black? The state run media has been bashing every Republican candidate since Teddy Roosevelt and the state run media has been controlled by Democrats since the beginning of time. Gee, thanks Bookman for your impartial reference from CNN. Outside of the lunatic liberals, everyone knows the score with the news media. They had the liberal Cronkite from CBS calling the Viet Nam war a lost engagement like Harry Reid did with Iraq. They perpetuated the fabrication that President Bush lied about everything. They fed the American public a pablum of disinformation like a weasel trial lawyer; kind of like, John Edwards (a Democrat). The New York Times has been the liberal’s main spokeman for the conveyence of anti-American propaganda for decades. Was it any wonder that the New York Slimes tried to derail the Patriot Act? Fox has to go up against the whole gamut of liberal “news makers”, Hollywood, and David Letterman’s in order to give America an honest observation of current events. Given that fact, it is astounding that Fox is rated number 1 in viewship. No matter how the White House snake pit, the DNC propaganda machine, or the AJC’s liberal editorial department puts lickstick on this pig it’s campaign of disception is evident. Fox News apparently is well liked for the message that it gives. That message is truth and its message clearly cuts through the fog that the Democrats cast upon this nation. As I have said over and over…when liberals feel threatened they character assassinate the truth.

Seriously, does anyone here only get their news from just one source? Anyone with a shred of intelligence will examine other sources if they WANT the full picture. Democrats are unlikely to watch or visit FoxNews, because they have to listen to a bunch of opinions they don’t want. Likewise, conservatives will prefer FoxNews or Drudge because it focuses more on opinions they agree with. However, if one wants the truth, without slant, it requires looking at several sources, and comparing to remove the bias. Some issues, say the recent tsunami in Samoa, are just plain fact, and all sources will pretty much be reporting the same thing. Sure there are ignorami (correct plural of ignoramus? I dunno, sounds good) among us who are so politically polarized as to not be willing to listen to opposing viewpoints, but those are the ~30% on either side who the political parties can check off as guaranteed voters. The remaining third of us must try to listen for the truth amid all the propaganda to decide. I have yet to find the truly unbiased source – could be because we are all human and we all have an opinion. I do personally find Jamie Dupree (on the Boortz show at noon every weekday) to be particularly fair, and it is worth listening to at least just that segment if you have not tried yet. Neal tries to bait him for opinions, but Jamie is a model of journalistic integrity…

Fox News is a lot more trustworthy than most of the media, and isn’t full of the pap that passes for “news” on CNN. Fox is telling it like it is, and the White House can’t stand that. Well, all of you who want censorship of the only station that will give us the other side of the story, you are just like the Communists with their Pravda, and Hitler with his Goebels–they just want to keep you fat, dumb and happy–and you will be until you are paying about 75% in taxes.

DannyX:
I think that we would find that the “high circulation” of the AJC is because it is located in the center (more or less) of the largest metropolitian area in Georgia, probably the southeast.

But even with these millions of people and business to market to the daily circulation of the AJC is just over 300,000. Circulation has been dropping steadly for years. From Oct. ‘08 through March ‘09 the AJC lost another 8.5%.

And the cause: The AJC has been unable, really unwilling, to provide the service that their potential subscribers wantd. That is Geographic and Political balance. I will admit that they have been making an effort over the last several month. Still a ways to go. Maybe to little to late. I hope not.

The mere fact that Bush couldn’t stand what MSNBC was saying about him tells me they must be doing something right. After all, a liar in power can’t tolerate someone calling him out and letting the public know he’s wrong.

“news channel” is a misnomer since they don’t actually employ reporters. Like MSNBC it’s more of a current events discussion forum.

They hire talking heads who claim to be experts who just blab blab blab.

I do kind of dig Shepard Smith. He’s a standout over there at Fox.

Actually listened to Limbaugh the other day, Friday it was. I was traveling by car, so it was convenient. Just had to tune in to see if my instinct about him was correct. I just knew he’d have to play down the Nobel announcement. Just too easy a target for him. So I tune in and sure enough, I’ve got him pegged to a T: “I’m not going to devote this entire show to the Nobel prize news. I just know it’s a plot by this White House to yank my chains.”

Do I know my el Rushbo or do I know el Rushbo?

Speaking of fox news, on Huckabee last night, an audience member asked Huckabee if his band took requests. He said yes, we get lots of requests, but we keep on playing anyway. Good stuff.

OK, since you seem to have a modicum of emotional stability I’ll ask–why would Cox media be “really unwilling” to offer something that would provide additional revenue?

You might also consider that this company is the same one that signs Neal Boortz’s paycheck and runs mostly right-wing propaganda on its WSB-750 radio station, before you answer that.

The BushCo faithful shucked and grinned for Faux News for years on end. And stil do.

And promulgated the lie that the “free press” was oh so hard on Bushie. WTF??????????

They gave that criminal a free pass even though he should have been summarily impeached. For SERIAL violations of US law and the US Constitution.

They made millions and millions and millions off of his shock and awe. And botched, lie-fueled invasions and occupations. And trotted out an endless line of never-served chickenhawks to promote it further. Being the good “patriots” they all are.

ALL of the main supposed “news” outlets did it. EVERY LAST ONE.

But you never-will-serve cowards were too busy being conned into believing they were “liberal” so you conveniently failed to notice.

Their veracity and credibility were beyond reproach to you vapid and vacuous TVers.

Now your teabagging nephews do the same.

Mental midgets getting “enlightenment” from frauds and corporate con-men.

And you split hairs about which is more “truthful” instead of acknowledging that they are an enormous disservice to our democracy…

Joey, my point went way over your head. Of course even though the AJC with the highest circulation in Georgia does not reflect the state.

Just where have the lost AJC customers gone? Usually when one leaves they go elsewhere. Would you please tell us the newspaper that has taken the AJC’s customers. Surely supply and demand means there is a major conservative paper in town.

If no conservative paper, why? Why is there no start up paper picking up the slack?

If you don’t want a pretend reason how about the obvious. The Internet.
