Majorities in US, UK say Nobel was undeserved

PoliticsHome, a news and opinion aggregator with operations in both the USA and UK, conducted a poll/survey in the two countries about reaction to Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize.

The site says the poll was taken via email, so I’m not sure whether its accuracy compares to those conducted by telephone. But with more than 1,400 respondents in the US and more than 1,300 in the UK, I suspect it’ll do as a rough gauge of public sentiment in the two countries.

1_obama

According to PoliticsHome, 39 percent of Americans polled said Obama deserves the award, compared to just 22 percent in the United Kingdom. Fifty-two percent of Americans believe that he did not deserve it, compared to 62 percent of Brits.

Pluralities in both countries also believed that awarding the prize to Obama diminished the award’s credibility.

As I indicated earlier, I’m with those who believe the prize is undeserved at this point, and I also think it did diminish the prestige of the award. While  Obama has done a good job in his nine months in office; I just don’t think that qualifies him for the Nobel Peace Prize. The world is full of good, smart people struggling to do right in important jobs, and most of them don’t deserve the prize either.

This fresh from the Norway Post-

Letters from our readers with comments and reactions to President Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize is still coming in on Sunday morning. And while the majority are negative, we have now received a few positive e-mails as well.

However, for every positive reaction there are more than five negative ones, at last count.

When we wrote the first article on this subject we had only received negative reactions, and one reader wrote: – I’m very disappointed to read on this website the negative slant regarding Obama’s being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Why did you only report the negative reactions? Have you no positive emails to report on?

The answer is, as we also wrote in the article, there were none. It took nearly 24 hours for the fiirst positive letter to arrive, and one of them read:

- I am ashamed that you have received negative emails from us here in the United States. I grew up in Norway and I am very proud of what the Nobel Peace Prize Committee did was to give the awarded to President Obama. I was distressed when President Bush said that “either you are with us or against us”. I am very proud of Norway and I apologize for these awful remarks of the Americans.

Let me just repeat what we have underlined in earlier reports: Reactions are mixed here in Norway too, but mostly in the positive, although many express the veiew that it was a bit early for Obama to receive the Prize now. Others describe it as an investment in the future, a Prize for hope.

“However, for every positive reaction there are more than five negative ones, at last count.”

Three paragraphs later states-

“Let me just repeat what we have underlined in earlier reports: Reactions are mixed here in Norway too, but mostly in the positive, ……”

The Norway Post is undoubtably a “legitimate” news source as per the WhiteHouse.

A political pawn for a political gotcha on the previous Administration. It’s an embarrassment to him and to our country. President Obama is doing himself no favors…just sayin’.

To start you first have to decide how big a portion of stockfish you want to soak, or rather how much Lutefisk you want to make. As a rule, 125 grams of stockfish is the equivalent of 1 kg of soaked fish. A lutefisk lover is likely to consume more than a kilo of lutefisk, which means you should allow a minimum of 125 grams of stockfish per person.Soaking
Ready beaten stockfish is soaked in cold water for about 24 hours (stockfish that has not been hammered should be soaked for about 4 days). You should use running water, or change the water at least twice every 24 hours.

‘Luting’ — adding the lye
Make a solution of water and caustic soda (NaOH) using 50 grams of soda per 7 litres of water. The soaked fish should be left in the soda solution for about 24 hours. Subsequently, it should be watered down, preferably in running water, for approximately 48 hours. Then the fish is ready to be cooked or frozen.

Peace prize? Peace? I suppose one could stretch a case that somewhere down the line competition for resources as a result of policies that led to global warming will also lead to warfare and so the award was based on heading of a might have been, just like the Pres’s award it based on a might will be. Still and all, Alfred Nobel’s rolling over in his grave.

The only one we were shut out on was Literature which went to Herta Mueller, a Romanian-born writer living in Germany. (I am sure all ya’ll have several of her books in your homes). They could have given it to an American writer, say William Goldman.

This fortifies this argument .

Obama was a Junior Senator who had voted “present” 129 times. He has never ran a business and has never been a leader of anything. And now he wins the Nobel Peace Prize because of his having “good thoughts”.

I congratulate the president on his award.

My view isn’t a matter of deserving vs. non-deserving. I see it as a foreign intrusion into American policy. Most of the world would like to see a weaker U.S., which they believe would be in their best interest. Alas, when you are on top, everybody wants to knock you down. Giving obama the award is a way of forcing him to live up to their definition of what peace is.
If obama’s foreign policy fails, there will be anything but peace and we will be in a worse position to deal with the aftermath.
For instance, if we take a hands-off approach with Iran, Israel may feel compelled to take a hands-on approach. What will follow will not be peaceful.
Iran has threatened and already indeed acted hostile towards Israel, I would not expect much patience from out Jewish brethren. They are surrounded by enemies; they have little wiggle room for error. If Iran goes unchecked, expect Israel to act. Do not expect a single inspector to set foot in an Iranian nuclear facility. They are buying time and nothing else.

How did an award from a private organization in a foreign country suddenly become an American political crisis? No one in this country had a vote. So one cannot blame the Republicans or the Democrats, or the Liberals or the Conservatives, or the Congress or the Supreme Court.

If Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq & Iran are problems that are 10 on the scale, Obama getting the Nobel has got to be down around .01 or lower.

And, of course, this is my opinion. Do not feel insulted because it is different from yours.

I agree with you that the award was premature and non-deserving. I also agree with some of the posters that this topic has been well debated.

A point that this topic brought to mind that has not been discussed is that in the U.S. you can dissent with the ruling party and not be subject to torture, jail, or even death. Imagine if Kim Jong Il had won that prize and the North Korean people came out and said he didn’t deserve it.

All too often, we take for granted the country which we live in. We can vehemently oppose the president and make that known without living in fear of our life. Reading the previous blog entry made me laugh. People defending 24 hour cable as “news”. All they’re peddling is sensationalism to sell advertising. If you want real news, go to Reuters or AP. Political crisis? LOL!! No exactly.

**If Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq & Iran are problems that are 10 on the scale, Obama getting the Nobel has got to be down around .01 or lower.**

Perhaps it would be better if he had spent more than 25 minutes with his commander of Afghanistan and DIDN’T go to Oslo. Wouldn’t you agree?

You DO realize that when he goes anywhere, it is a matter of a giant airlift of his limo, plus yet a separate cargo plane of Black SUVs armed to the tee. It is a HUGE production, costing millions.

Maybe spending a few minutes back in Washington, pretending to care would be better. Just a real meeting with his military commanders just might be in order, if he can work it in between his TV appearances. We won’t even need to see the meeting. If he just pretended to care: that would be much better.

The third quarter was when Russia got things done, using a mixture of diplomatic, military, intelligence and economic tools. Russia has managed to soften Azerbaijan, Turkey and Germany’s pro-U.S. positions and, if it has not formally added them to the list of countries where Russian power is preeminent, it has at least made them neutral in the competition between Russia and the United States. Russia has persuaded nearly all factions in the Ukrainian political spectrum to favor a Russian-leaning (as opposed to Western-leaning) future and will cement that achievement in the country’s January 2010 elections.–STRATFOR

Shoulda known it was you and Mrs. G and all your secret handshakes stuff. I’m reading The Lost Symbol and I see you two throughout.

Y’know, this blog is probably the last place you want to float the idea that people can make $$$ by recycling their natural gas….

In a historic Holy Cow moment, the Vatican today made the startling announcement that President Barack H. Obama had been canonized a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, the first person in church history made a saint while still living. Church officials confirmed that President Obama had been given a dispensation from the normal requirement of having to die first because of concerns that Mr. Obama may in fact be immortal, as claimed by the Kool-Aid Society.

The officials further confirmed that the President had also received a dispensation from the normal requirement of having performed two miracles because, they said, he had made a number of eloquent speeches in which he had promised to perform more than two miracles — miracles that he said were necessary to clean up the messes he had inherited from his predecessor, who not only was no saint but was the devil incarnate, according to Mr. Obama.

Pope Benedict XVI had called President Obama at 4 a.m. to advise him of his canonization. According to a source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the conversation, the newly sainted President said thanks and asked the Pope if sainthood came with a monetary prize, like maybe $1.4 million. Advised by the Pope that there was no such prize, St. Barack told the Pope that was OK, he would easily make it up with a book deal, but the Pope would have to write a blurb for the book jacket. The Pope agreed, if St. Barack would autograph the book for him and throw in two magic teleprompters. Done. Sainthood had not dulled the Uniter-in-Chief’s keen ability to negotiate and bring people together.

But there was more negotiating, according to the source:

St. Barack said he wanted St. Peter’s Square rebuilt and expanded to make room for all his adoring followers on the day of his canonization ceremony in the square. And he wanted the name of the square changed to St. Barack’s Square, along with the name of St. Peter’s Basilica changed to St. Barck’s Basilica. And he wanted the exclusive use of the square and basilica for all his future campaign rallies. The Pope politely declined but countered with letting St. Barack dress up like the Pope for the canonization ceremony, complete with pointed mitre and golden staff, and agreeing to kiss St. Barack’s ring. That was a good start, but no deal, said St. Barack, according to the source.

St. Barack said he also wanted his visage put on all Vatican coins and he wanted his birthday, August 4, designated as a holy day of obligation for all Catholics around the world. His divine patience wearing thin, the Pope agreed, and the two men at last broke into a chorus of Yes We Can, in Gregorian chant.

Now we may all pray to St. Barack, the Accomplished and the Humble.

Nothing Is Free and others

OK, I have read the responses to my opinion that Obama & the Nobel is not a big deal.

If you do not like Obama’s ideas, OK with me. I do not agree with most of his ideas either. If you just do not like Obama period, OK. I do not understand but I accept the fact. I have always been oriented toward people’s ideas, not them personally. So I have a hard time with liking or not liking them personally if I have never met them. But ideas are another matter.

Would it be fair to say that some people have a hard time separating the person from his ideas?

What this blog needs is more collegiality, if I may borrow Chief Justice Roberts favorite word.

Anything that makes the right wing nutter butters this ‘excited’ must be good. I’d give Obama a new award or prize every week just to hear them whine about it. I hope he wins the lottery next followed by being awarded honorary degrees to every college in the US and Iran and Russia.

Thanks. Had an MRI and thought it might’ve been a repeat of four years ago. Second MRI indicates it’s not. Hospital called because doc ordered another one. So I don’t know if this is a third one or if their signals are crossed on the second. In their defense, they might not’ve known to check because she was supposed to be scheduled one for this week and last weekend I took her to the ER where she was admitted. Looks like it may be a pancreas blockage – nothing like Patrick Swayze had – and the MRI done yesterday on her spine was supposedly clear. But then I got that phone call about another (?) MRI.

Trying to stay focused and get any work done is a challenge.

And yes, we did discuss this past weekend how this country needs some serious health care reforms.

It would seem I’m in the minority then when I think Obama deserved it more than anyone else. Still I don’t feel bad at all for siding with the Norwegians. Doesn’t hurt from my perspective that they avoided the brunt of the current financial debacle by exercising more prudence than the Americans or British and that those who are questioning Obama’s worthiness are the ones that found themselves in Iraq. That the Nobels are up to now still the most prestigious prizes going says something about those Scandinavians. One would have thought the Americans and British would have come up with an alternative if they could come up with something as credible.

I thought this was a fairly obvious selection. Considering all this controversy, however, in a few years this might end up looking like one of the best choices the Nobel committee has ever made and further make up for their myopia in overlooking Gandhi and the rather boring and uninspired choices they’ve been making the past few years. The prize could use a renewed boost to its prestige and if this selection proves prescient this might well do it.

That would’ve been fun. I read an article about the Republican Congressman who introduced the motion to remove Rangel. Guy’s and ex judge. Said what really got to him was that there were no penalties or interest paid by Rangel. None. Said it grated against justice.

I did see where CNN – Wolf Blitzer’s show – did a factcheck on SNL’s Obama skit where the Pres listed what he was going to do…. ‘course, some commentators said they searched in vain for a similar CNN factcheck on SNL’s skits about Palin… or Bush…. or Cheney.

No, I am not pulling your leg. CNN really did it.

Paul,

Well, I will be thinking good thoughts. I’ve never heard of a pancreas blockage – but now that I know about them, I’ll probably be sure to think I have one.

I remember a few months ago when I was going through all those tests, I kept thinking to myself that there were people having the same trouble as I was, and I was lucky to have insurance so I could have these tests. Turns out nothing serious was wrong – but there were probably people who were having the same symptoms, not having tests, and things aren’t okay but they won’t know until it’s too late.

And there is nothing like caring for the elderly to realize that our health care system is stupid – I’ve just realized it earlier than some, but in a few years when more and more people are faced with caring for an elderly relative, those naysayers will be thinking, “What in the hell was I thinking?”

I’m sure work is a challenge, but keep blogging and we’ll talk about food or Tricia Helfer or something – we’ll cheer you up!!!

**The prize could use a renewed boost to its prestige and if this selection proves prescient this might well do it.**

Yes, and I should have won the Nobel for my plans to save the world with my new “making energy from belly-button lint” invention. I have all the well meaning of Barrack Hussain Obama (mmmmm, mmmmm, mmmmm.) I want to save the world, too.

Seriously, legit awards are not given for good intentions and legit awards are not given for taking a chance that someone might do what they promise. So much for the legitimacy of the Nobel.

The battle lines have been drawn. Can we send in our drones now?

Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) — A bomb attack on a military convoy passing through a northwest Pakistan marketplace killed 41 people a day after the army ended a Taliban siege of its headquarters, taking the death toll from four days of attacks to more than 100.

The bomb in the mountain bazaar of Alpuri killed four army troops and two policemen, besides dozens of civilians, said Amir Muqam, the parliament representative from the Shangla valley, where the attack took place. “At least 48 are injured, many are in a serious condition,” he said in a phone interview.

The past week’s Taliban attacks, notably the unprecedented assault on army headquarters, which ended at dawn yesterday, may have bolstered public support for the military to launch a new offensive against the guerrillas, as the U.S. has been seeking.
