January 10, 2007: In a last-ditch effort to fend off the disaster they long claimed could never come, President Bush and others are proposing to escalate our effort in Iraq, reportedly increasing our commitment by roughly 20,000 troops. It is a futile gesture, a vain attempt to salvage what is already lost. Recent experience in Iraq confirms that conclusion. Beginning in August, U.S. military officials stripped troops from elsewhere to boost manpower in Baghdad by several thousand troops, in what was then billed as a make-or-break effort to secure the city. As the Pentagon recently conceded in a report to Congress, the effort did produce a reduction in insurgent and sectarian attacks in August, but it proved temporary, with attacks rising to record levels in September and October even as the operation continued. I am seeing a lot of silly stuff here. Ssg is a rank currently held in the AirForce, Army and, Marines. IED's are not always command detonated. They can be set like land mines to, go off when a vehicle hits them or a "Drop and Pop" usually a timer of some kind on a bomb and dropped out of a moving vehicle or, left on the road. This mostly to the first ones who commented and had not much clue what they were talking about. I was with the 48th in Iraq 05-06. I respect that some are veterans but, you are popping comments and questions with out thought. This is a tribute to a fallen troop. Leave the polotics and q and a for another web site!
I have never seen a newspaper allow a Soldier's tribute be so dishonored. These comments should have been moved to another location from the beginning. AJC you have done yourself proud. Leftwing/rightwing instead of tribute...

I am sorry and mourn the loss of the soldier, his family, friends and all of who care that these young men left so much behind. Its sad. I came home in September from working on a police team in Eastern Paktika Province, Afghanistan after spending a tour in that particular area and trained some 121 memebers to replace us. It breaks my heart to hear this kind of news from that area and from these teams. All soldiers in harms way are in my prayers.

SSG French was a member of alpha company if he was based out of lawrenceville, my old unit. He was fairly new to the unit because I am not too familiar with him. War is hell and it is never easy to lose a soldier. Let us hope his sacrifice meant something.

My condolences to the family. Your husband and father gave his life in part for my safety and freedom. His sacrifice will be remembered and honored. My son is with the 48th at Spera. The following is an excerpt from his blog after Sgt Blair was killed.

"I march now in time, solemn and resolute with my brothers, escorting the soldier in front of me on his final journey home. And though I did not know the man well, he was a warrior through and through. Though I did not know him well, my brothers around me do; left and right they stare forward with the pain and knowledge of what we have lost. As we march by hands raise slowly in salute, Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy, Afghan Police, civilians, every one, every one on the base not to busy fighting the war. This is respect, this is honor, and this is something any warrior would be proud of." -- Carl Jackson July 4, 2009

We understand people in the armed services die all the time for no reason at all in Afghanistan and Iraq because Bush put them there. We understand Bush ran AWOL and Cheney and Chambliss are draft dodgers.
