Cal Thomas, a purveyor of hate in religious disguise

Syndicated columnist Cal Thomas, writing in the Washington Times, today offers an ugly, despicable attack on all Muslim Americans, whom he accuses of “the undermining of this nation from within … through deception, putting on a peaceful face while subtly plotting ways to bring America down.”

As his sole piece of evidence, Thomas cites statements at a public prayer rally of Muslim Americans in Washington, at which a Brooklyn imam lauded American freedom, telling the crowd that “What we’ve done today, you couldn’t do in any Muslim country. If you prayed on the palace lawn there, they’d lock you up.”

But on Facebook, Thomas points out, that same imam has written that “Democracy is not revelation, and democracy does not equal freedom, for in democracy you have apartheid, you have slavery, you have homosexuality, you have lesbianism, you have gambling, you have all of the vices that are against the spirit of truth; so no we don’t want to democratize Islam, we want to Islamize democracy.”

To Thomas, an evangelical Christian, this statement constitutes proof that the imam in particular and Muslim Americans in general are trying to destroy America from the inside, using terrorism as a weapon. Yet the truth is that on an almost daily basis, socially conservative Christian leaders employ almost identical rhetoric as the socially conservative imam.

They too decry the excesses of American freedom that lead to tolerance of gays and other perceived vices — the difference is that in their case, they seek to “Christianize” rather than “Islamize” democracy.

Thomas of course sees nothing dangerous or wrong with that at all. (For the record, neither do I. I disagree with them, but they have every right to say those things and in no way endanger our country by doing so. The same is true of the imam.)

“Are we being infiltrated and surrounded by people who want us dead and our country destroyed?” Thomas asks in his column, raising a question that he lacks the guts to answer. “Try a little experiment: Google “Islam near” and then type in the name of any city or town. When I tried the small town of Bryn Mawr, Pa., outside Philadelphia, 10 Islamic-related sites came up. In larger cities, there are as many, or more. Deception is part of the terrorists’ battle strategy.”

So the presence of Islamic related sites is evidence of a terror conspiracy? What Thomas seeks is the marginalization and rejection of Muslim Americans, the very process that in European countries has made their Muslim communities more prone to radicalization. He seeks to create the very thing he claims to despise.

It’s useful to recall that after the fall of communism, this very same Thomas called for a “cultural war crimes tribunal” in which many of his fellow Americans would be forced to answer for their opinions. At those trials, he wrote, “people from academia, the media, government and the clergy who were wrong in their assessment of communism would be forced to confront their mistakes.”

Sounds just like democracy, doesn’t it?

In 2003, this stalwart defender of democracy again called for a domestic war crimes tribunal, this time to bring to account “scores of false media prophets who predicted disaster should the U.S. military confront and seek to oust the murderous regime of Saddam Hussein.” This was in those short heady “Mission Accomplished” days right after the invasion of Iraq, before most Americans truly understood that we were not being greeted with roses and chocolate.

“The purpose of a cultural war crimes tribunal would be to remind the public of journalism’s many mistakes, as well as the errors of certain politicians and retired generals, and allow it to properly judge their words the next time they feel the urge to prophesy…,” Thomas wrote. “All of the printed and voiced prophecies should be saved in an archive. When these false prophets again appear, they can be reminded of the error of their previous ways and at least be offered an opportunity to recant and repent.”

The mindset of people such as Cal Thomas is far more undemocratic and dangerous than that of most of the Muslim Americans whom he seeks to smear.

Wow. Good piece, Mr. Bookman! What a terrific reminder that our first ammendment rights come with a price: tolerance of those with whom we disagree. I also agree that the religio-fundies of different religions are more alike than they are different. Let them say what they will, and let us all think critically and objectively about what we hear.

Drawing on his family’s violent past, the Democratic congressman (Patrick Kennedy) told roughly 75 people gathered at a private health-care forum Saturday morning that opponents of Democrat-backed health-care legislation had gone too far. He cited, as an example, 10,000 signs distributed at a recent Washington protest that read, “Bury ObamaCare with Kennedy.”

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Swimmer dead already at the time?

Would have been kinda hard to kill him, don’t you think.

There is a station in Israel, called “Israel National News” where Cal Thomas is virtually worshiped as the partner of Hashem. This is a station that virtually calls for the genocide of Palestinians.

Thomas is a nut. Its a shame they do not lock him up under the various state laws that allow the insane to be held against their own will.

What an imbecile. And then the local dims jump in saying how tolerant we need to be of islam while Christians are openly slammed on this blog almost daily.

How do they do it? How does the media convince people that Islam is good and just misunderstood but with all the good that Christians do, they are actually just a front for a hate group.

A year ago, this same media convinced the left that War in Iraq was very, very bad. but war in Afghanistan was very very good. How’s that working out now?

And the most stunning thing about all of this is that the media can change it’s mind overnight and everyone just goes along like a bunch of bobble headed dogs . . . Yep . . . Keith Oberman said it, must be true, Yep, Yep.

The fact that Bookman is the biggest bobble head is no big surprise.

You will never read about this in any textbook-

The “old-skool” slaves of Georgia (18th and early 19th century) were mostly moslems.
Before Washington DC flexed its central authority muscle, these same slaves were mostly literate, were free to attend schools and practice their religion of Islam. Ben-Ali the Mohammedan of Sapelo Island even owned slaves and was paid a handsome salary to be overseer of said island.

During the war of 1812, Ben-Ali even defended the sacred coast of Georgia against the bloody British. The Brits offered him freedom. He chose to fight for Georgia.

People of faith know who their commen enemy is, no matter what their television or nattering nabobs of negativity tell them.

The Truth Hurts

September 29th, 2009

“In the seventh century of the Christian era a wandering Arab, of the lineage of Hagar, the Egyptian, combing the powers of transcendent genius with the preternatural energy of a fanatic and the fraudulent spirit of an imposter, proclaimed himself as a messenger from heaven, and spread desolation and delusion over an extensive portion of the earth.”

“Adopting, from the sublime conception of the Mosaic law, the doctrine of one omnipotent God, he connected indissolubly with it the audacious falsehood, that he was himself his prophet and apostle. Adopting from the new revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion.”

“He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy; and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war as part of his religion against all the rest of mankind. The essence of his doctrine was violence and lust; to exalt the brutal over the spiritual part of human nature.”

“Between these two religions, thus contrasted in the characters, a war of more than twelve hundred years has already raged. That war is yet flagrant; nor can it cease but by the extincture of that imposture, which has been permitted by Providence to prolong the degeneracy of man. While the merciless and dissolute are encouraged to furnish motives to human action, there never can be peace on earth and good will toward men. The hand of Ishmael will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him.”

Most liberal actually never think of homosexuals or are “disgusted” with gay sex, because for the most part, its completely off our radar screens. The only time we even think of it is when we have to hear some social conservative go off on a rant about it. S

Same thing with “prayer in the schools”. Their attitude is basically to force something on other people, and what liberals are doing is actually forcing “nothing” on anyone. To not have something is considerably different that requiring something.

My favorite fact about the recent western ideas about Islam is the fact that the idea of “Tolerant Islam” is another western creation. It was created by European Jews trying to gain political and social equality in the Europe of the 19th Century. The would use the example of how much better Jews were treated in Islamic societies than they were in Europe. There were a lot of Jews at that time who gave up on Europe and moved to the Islamic world, for those reasons. The most important of them were the Zionists. They figured they had it better in the Islamic world, and decided it was easier to move than to fight western Antisemitism. Theodore Herzl, the founder of the Zionist movement stated that Jews would never get a break in Europe, and it would be easier to petition the Islamic Ottoman Empire for a Jewish State, because historically under Islam, areas with Jewish or Christian majorities were sort of allowed to rule themselves, at least religiously, under their own religious laws. One of the primary reasons Muslims became pissed off at the creation of Israel was that the Ottomans responded positively for the Zionist request to go to Palestine. They viewed it as a breach of good manners to abuse the invitation and right to come and live among them.

The only real difference between social conservative Christians in the U.S. and Fundamentalist Muslim in the Muslim world is civil government. I doubt America would look all that different if the concept of separation of church and state did not exist. And of course the most secular states in the Islamic World, like Turkey, constitutionally adopted the same idea. The complete separation of mosque and state.

Mr. Bookman: 3 separate Islamic plots against our country (on our own soil) were reported last week. Do you really know anything about Islam?
The Koran allows Muslims to lie to infidels (about things like being peaceful American citizens) if it helps Islam in it’s quest for world domination. This is not a game. What we have here is an ever growin population of fanatics allowed to infiltrate a free Western society whose media is dominated by naive ignoramuses. Easy pickins for Allah!
It’s too late for much of Europe, and if you have your way, America’s days are numbered too.

As Abe Lincoln once said, America will never be brought down by any external force, Islamic or otherwise. It will destroy itself from within and the instrument of that destruction will of course be socially conservative Christians.

Some of you misunderstand. We only APPEAR to “target” Christianity because that’s what’s flung in our faces most frequently. If you use it to back up your position, expect to be challenged on it. Your choice. I reject neither God nor Jesus (being a monotheist, I find it absurd that other monotheists argue as to whose God is more real), it’s RELIGION many of us reject.

By religion, I mean people who organize themselves and set about telling everybody else what’s what (while asking for money, of course!) AS IF God can’t tell me what He wants me to know! He needs to “use” some guy who went to seminary school in Kentucky? How insulting! The most powerful force in all the Universe does not need YOU (or Charles Stanely or some Imam) to tell ME anything. Get over yourselves and have a merry friggin’ Christmas all year long for all I care. Not everything is about YOU, as much as you think it should be.

3 Fundamentalist Muslim plots against America were discovered in the last week. How many right wing threats to the nation were discovered. On average, the U.S. government has dealt with 135 such threats a year and was dealing with them long before Al Qaeda ever existed.

Conservative wing nuts are much more powerful than the Muslim threat. So much so that the government report about the right wing terrorist threat to the U.S. had to be withdrawn from publication.

Simply put while Republicans were offended by the Department of Homeland Security report, it identified almost a 926 right wing hate organizations that promoted the use of violence against the government or minority citizens. It did suggest that it was possible for returning veterans to be recruited to these groups but also stated that since the original spike in such recruits immediately after 9/11, the rates of recruitment of veterans had dropped rather than increased.

Actually another false statement. The Quran does not allow Muslims to lie to non Muslims.

This has been a right wing misinterpretation of a Shi’ite theological assertion that Shi’ites have the right to lie about being Shi’ites to people who were allowed to kill them for being Shi’ites.

Another conservative lie nipped turned on its head by the facts.

Yes, I know about Islam and I have traveled in Muslim countries. I would feel safer there than at a Tea Party protest.

AmVet;
I am not surprised that you would contend that.
Are you contending that there are no similar excentrics on the Left?

Religious fundamentalists are all the same, no matter which religion –

Unfortunately the above is very true. Fundies may be wrong, but by gosh, by golly they are committed!

That’s why they are so dangerous.

For those with an open mind who seriously are interested in the symbiosis of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic symbiosis, Bruce Feiler’s “Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths” is highly recommended.
