Obama at the UN: World loves it, neo-cons hate it

President Obama’s speech to the United Nations was well-received, at least by the world leaders and ambassadors assembled for the occasion. As The Wall Street Journal reported, Obama “sought to distance his country from the era of his White House predecessor, vowing that “America will live by its values” on human rights even as he said he would take to task the abuses and failures of allies and foes alike.”

“The U.S. president clearly tried to turn the page on the Bush era. He spoke of his decisions to ban the use of torture and close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The U.S., he said, has “moved from a bystander to a leader in international climate negotiations.” He pledged to soon seek the ratification of the Comprehensive nuclear Test Ban Treaty and pursue deep cuts to the U.S. nuclear arsenal…

As he spoke, the dramatics that had greeted some of the addresses of President George W. Bush were nowhere in evidence.

But Mr. Obama did call on the world to give up a “an almost reflexive anti-Americanism, which too often has served as an excuse for our collective inaction.”

“Those who used to chastise America for acting alone in the world cannot now stand by and wait for America to solve the world’s problems alone. We have sought — in word and deed — a new era of engagement with the world,” he said. “Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.”

Over the National Review’s Corner, however, the reviews were not so kind. Words such as “shameful,” “appalling,” “galactic obliviousness” and “staggering naivete” were being bandied about. Former UN Ambassador John Bolton called it “a post-American speech by our first post-American president.”

Here’s the text of the speech.  Go read it yourself, and judge for yourself. Personally, I think the folks at the Corner have utterly lost it.

Oh yeah, I forgot the labor unions-

The 215 percent increase in tire imports from China is largely the fault, so to speak, of lower-income Americans, many of whom will respond to the presidential increase in the cost of low-end tires by driving longer on their worn tires. How many injuries and deaths will this cause? How many jobs will it cost in tire replacement businesses, or among longshoremen who handle imports? We will find out. The costs of the president’s sacrifice of the national interest to the economic illiteracy of a single labor union may also include injuries China might inflict by imposing retaliatory protectionism or reducing its purchases of U.S. government debt, purchases that enable Americans to consume more government services than they are willing to pay for.-George Will, RealClearPolitics

This post is actually in response to Cynthia Tucker’s column comparing “birthers” with “truthers” which just disappears when I post it. Just trying to see if it is something with the blog software or if it is some kind of censorship:

First of all, Cynthia is a member of the “left wing fringe” herself. That is pretty indisputable.

Second of all, Public Policy Polling is a partisan liberal polling source, so their numbers are garbage. PPP says that Democrats are 25%-63%-12% yes/no/not sure on Bush and 9/11. Rasmussen non-partisan poll has it at 35%-39%-26%. The difference between the two polls is 24 points on whther Bush may have known about 9/11. Just to be clear 61% of Democrats think that Bush did or may have knowledge of 9/11, so Tucker’s claim that there are extremists on the left is laughable.

Thirdly, the notion that everyone who does not know if Obama was born out of country is a “birther” is a joke. The question only asks if you think Obama was born out of country, not if he is legally President. For folks who don’t follow politics, they may simply may be confused by the cross-talk, Many folks are aware that Obama’s father was Kenyan and that he lives overseas as a child. Is it such a stretch that people may not know where the guy was born? Do we also think that all of these people are familiar with the naturalized birth requirement for the President. Liberal hacks intentionally conflate the two to make just the silly point that Tucker is making here.

Finally, let’s compare the two “offenses”. It is much more extreme to accuse Bush of intentionally letting 3,000 people die than it is to not be aware of where Obama was born. Tucker may try to conflate the two to continue her relentless partisan march to demonize people who dare not share her narrow-minded views, but this dishonest argument falls apart under light scrutiny.

Let’s see, on the European tour he apologized profusely for America and now he says he won’t apologize for America. The reason that President Bush drew a visceral response from the UN crowd was simple – he viewed the world as a battle between good and evil and the corrupt fat cats in the UN audience are the embodiment of evil. On the other hand, in Obama they have found a cuckhold willing to set aside American interest to win the world’s approval. One can hardly cheer anything this dufus does, let alone his ramblings today at the UN.

The time has long past to abandon failed neo-liberal policy. It’s time to “BUY AMERICAN.” We need to start SELLING to the world instead of BUYING from it.

All you libertarians SELL OUT AMERICA WHILST WAVING YOUR FLAGS.

Reaganomics, neo-liberal economics–whatever you want to call it has been a miserable failure. Drive down the street–look at all of the “For Lease” and “For Sale” signs where once-profitable businesses once were.

That’s real nice Soothie but-

None of the 10 manufacturers who comprise the domestic tire industry sought this protectionism. Seven of the 10 also make tires in other countries. Most U.S. manufacturers have stopped making low-end tires, preferring the higher profit from more expensive models. (Four U.S. companies make low-end tires in China.)

The president smote China because a single union, the United Steelworkers, asked him to. It represents rubber workers, but only those responsible for 47 percent of U.S. tiremaking. The president’s action will not create more than a negligible number of jobs, if any. It will not restore a significant number, if any, of the almost 5,200 jobs that were lost in the tire industry between 2004 and 2008. Rather, the president will create jobs in other nations (e.g., Mexico, Indonesia) that make low-end tires. They make them partly because some U.S. firms have outsourced the manufacturing of such tires to low-wage countries so the U.S. firms can make a small profit, while making high-end and higher-profit tires here in high-wage America.-George Will, RealClearPolitics

As much as you hate Unions, they serve a useful purpose: they help prevent the abuse of labor. Strong Unions, fair wages are the secret to “demand-side” economics. We have spent almost 30 years now on “supply-side economics.”

If you research the history of labor, you will find that Unions are not evil as you think but help prevent labor from being exploited to the extreme.

Many on the right think that people who work in factories should work for “less than a living wage.” Let me ask you this? What do you think is a fair hourly wage in the United States? $10.00 $20.00 $30.00?

$10.00 and hour is approximately $20,000 a year. Could you live on that? I know, you don’t give a sh*t! $20.00 and hour is approximately $40,000 year. This approaching a living wage–if your wife works.

It’s about time we have a leader who is willing to stand up to the right-wing neo-con machine and become a player in the world. We’ve had eight years of an installed administration that produced record high deficits to barely fund a multi-trillion dollar fiasco of two wars that ultimately failed in every way possible. Now we have empty-headed drones paradigg as pimps and whores to concoct what they think is the story of the century in ACORN. The right-wing media thinks it’s got the smoking gun to take down this president – who they despised from Moment One. It’s laughable to think that Murdoch has his Woodward+Bernstein Moment, but the mindless idiots who are well-off in suburbs/exurbs and exclusive areas in-town–peddle this crap as if they’re somehow informed. At first glance, it does appear that the order is going too far. However, past investigations into large corporations have been halted because of public pronouncements of innocence/guilt by the target of the probe.

This particular tactic raises the Constitutional question of double jeopardy.

If that is the concern, it is probably best the Justice Department ask the target to refrain from making public statements about the case.

You forgot about overtime, which is normal time and a half…or $37.50 at $25.00 an hour. I make that 61 hours per week, not 78

**If that is the concern, it is probably best the Justice Department ask the target to refrain from making public statements about the case.**

That would be great if we were talking about a court case or any kind of action being taken against anyone. We are not. We are talking about a bill being pushed through Congress that will effect us all. Demanding that Humana stop discussing this bill, or sending information to it’s customers while AARP is doing the same thing for it’s customers is simply against the 1st Amendment.

Again, this administration is doing what it pleases and continues to ignore our constitution.

Franklin Roosevelt inherited a situation very much like the situation President Obama faces today. Years of liberal economic policy had devastated the country resulting in the Great Depression. This liberal economic policy resulted in the same situation we have today–concentration of wealth in upper 1 – 2% of the population.

Now we have neo-liberal economic policy with an even greater concentration of wealth in the top 1% of the population. EVEN WITH all of the policies instituted by FDR, only the second world war was able to break the grip of the depression.

As for all of you “wishers and hopers” out there who are looking for a quick end to our current difficulties, I wouldn’t hold my breath. In case you haven’t noticed, this is not a normal recession. Our economy is gone. Shipped out. Our only hope is home-building. Unfortunately, it costs far more to build a home than you can buy a foreclosed one for.

Hold fast to you beliefs! We are better off buying from overseas! Let our workers languish! They deserve it! It’s their fault! They only wanted a living wage!

I listened to every word of Bozo’s speech to the UN. He looked like he was on the campaign trail trying to win a primary election talking about how his administration was solving all of the world’s problems. A nuclear free world…. what has he been smoking? Closing Gitmo? Hasn’t happened yet and may not in the near future. “We don’t torture any more…. drew the most applause of anything he said. Guess a lot of those in the audience were happy that they weren’t going to have to worry about that anymore.
A lot of the people who listen in the audience are sizing up the leader of the free world and really like what they see. An empty suit who is a light weight trying to lecture all of the nations of the world on his “vision” of what the world ought to be. The Russians picked up on this on his visit to their country. None of his speeches were carried on Russian TV and many of the people at the Moscow Conservatory left during his speech on his vision of the world. They just don’t think that he is a player and worst of all, he is our president. No respect… no clout… those people in the audience at the UN not only don’t respect him, they are all looking for ways to exploit his weaknesses at the expense of the American people. He will be called out in the near future, depend on it. And when he does, we will learn what a community organizer does in a crisis. We can only hope that we survive.

The Chinese are getting your money bubby. Maybe you better review the codependence reflected in the vast holding of US bonds by their cheif banker China. China stepped up its lending to the US last winter at an unprecedented rate. That money doesn’t come for no interest.

China now earns more than $50 billion a year in interest from the United States, Mr. Setser at the Council on Foreign Relations calculated. That money don’t come from no tooth fairy; it be comin’ from the American taxpayer.

The Bush administration held hundreds of people at Gitmo with no charges and sat on their butts for 8 years without finding evidence. The Obama administration is doing much of the same thing thus far, although they are working on a plan to try the remianing Gitmo prisoners when and if they get off their butts and find evidence to charge them.

Hundreds have been released who were not charged by the Bush administration and there was no apology whatsoever even though they were held in solitary confinement conditions for years.

State Secrets has been deployed as a defense for those who have sued for torture during their incarceration for which they were not charged.

A case, al-Haramain v. Obama, was argued this morning that is probably the most significant along these lines yet before Judge Vaughn Walker in the ND California. There is arguably more at stake for the Obama administration and its policy of human rights violation parallel to Bush’s than in any other case so far.

So much for the “change” anyone can believe in as to civil rights.

All Obama’s appellate federal filings are well to the right of or identical to Bush’s.

Well, Mr. Bookman @6:20 wanted me to quote lines that led me to believe that the president is saying American is NO GOOD. I will do my best although that was a very long repetitive speech. And one must have the ability to read between the lines, a talent I am not sure Mr. Bookman has acquired. But here are a few lines I did not like or believe to be true..
———————————-
“Many around the world had come to view America with skepticism and distrust..
—————————————-

America has acted unilaterally without the interest of others. This has fed an almost reflective anti-americanism, which too often has served as an excuse for our collective inaction.
—————————————————
No longer do we have the luxury of indulging our differences to the exclusion of the work we must do together.
——————————————————-
There is no peace without preserving our planet!
————————————————————
The people of the world want change. They will not tolerate those who are on the wrong side of history.
————————————————————–
That is the future America wants–a future of peace and prosperity that we can only reach that when all nations have rights—
————————————————-

Then Obama takes responsibility with a bunch of claims most of which are almost unknown but will take a lot of money. Here’s a few of them : agenda for a world without nuclear weapons, Middle East workout, clean energy ($80 billion needed). launch $20 billion global food security, engage the United Nations and several other organizations,.$63 billion for HIV/AIDS.

Obama mentioned that America had once had slavery. He told several “sob” stories. Then he closed by saying America is ready to CHANGE.
“United States stands ready to begin a new chapter of international cooperation, one that recognized the rights and responsibilities of all nations.”
—–
This speech sounds like America has been a bad, bad place but it will do better, somewhat like a bad boy in school. and Obama will take credit for making it good.

This speech will please our enemies.

I think America is the best and we have long been the nation the world turned to for help. People around the world try to get here and stay. I have no patience with those who want to change America to a nebulous nub in a world wheel. Let us continue to work and fight for freedom, not CHANGE for the sake of change.

Doggone,
So if the grocery store near my house is closed; what you are saying is that they are not taking any new customers but will continue serving those who were customers? And for how long may I ask?

Because i have been in Publix when they announced it was closing time (not closing down time)and I was asked to leave and escorted out.

A real polite employee walked me to the door, at which time he said and I quote, “We can’t close the store until you are not in here.”

But maybe it was him who mis-spoke?

But if you say so, guess I should just take your word.

Is this like that August deadline for Health Care reform thing?

If so should we expect a retreat by the administration closing Gitmo as well?

Oh yes about those who need to overcome their fear, would those be democrat or republican reps. cause unles things have changed the democrats do not need 1 single vote from any republican to pass any legislation.

So are you now saying it is the dems. who are fear mongers?

You need a better analogy. Last time *I* was in a grocery store they didn’t lock me in and refuse to let me go. Nor did they hold me without any kind of charges, or try me without letting me see the evidence or witnesses against me.

Don’t get it into your pretty little head that I approve of how GITMO has been, or is being handled. I don’t. All this whining about union wages, and not one word about the rock-star salaries of corporate execs over the past thirty years. Union enrollment has declined over the last quarter century and your still picking at that carcass.

Doing it again will more than likely increase it again exponentially. Quit crying about the jobs leaving the country and start worrying about policing our borders to protect the jobs we have left. The boards, like our gov’t, have forgotten who they are working for – the shareholders. Some top managers are over compensated just as some union members are overcompensated.

Dusty suggests that these statements by Obama, among others, are evidence that he believes “America is NO GOOD:”

“No longer do we have the luxury of indulging our differences to the exclusion of the work we must do together.
——————————————————-
There is no peace without preserving our planet!
————————————————————
The people of the world want change. They will not tolerate those who are on the wrong side of history.
————————————————————–
That is the future America wants–a future of peace and prosperity that we can only reach that when all nations have rights.”

To believe those constitute attacks on America, one must believe that America is on the wrong side of history, that America does not believe that all nations have rights, that America is not interested in preserving the planet, that America is willing to indulge our differences to the exclusion of the work we must do together.

I don’t believe those things about America. I don’t believe President Obama believes those things about America.

“Russian links Iran sanctions to US missile change”

NEW YORK (AP) – With a diplomatic wink and nod, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev opened the door Wednesday to backing potential sanctions against Iran as a reward to President Barack Obama’s decision to scale back a U.S. missile shield in Eastern Europe. While U.S. and Russian officials denied a flat-out quid pro quo, Medvedev told the U.N. General Assembly that Obama’s pivot on a missile defense plan long loathed by Moscow “deserves a positive response.” Obama himself has said his missile decision may have spurred Russian good will as a “bonus.”

You and I know that Israel would not invade Iran, but may try to bomb some of the nuclear facilities. In my humble opinion, this action would cascade into global war. There would be nothing we could do to protect israel because the country is so small, one nuclear weapon in the area would be devastating.

If this scenario were to play itself out, the world economy would fall on its proverbial face because the Straits of Hormuz would be closed and many of the ports in the Gulf would be closed because of nuclear fallout.

No need for name calling.

Its not always that simple in geopolitics. Actions usually have more than one consequence. From Poland:

“some prominent figures in the region, such as former Polish President Lech Walesa, worried the new U.S. administration was turning away from its traditional allies in Central Europe to placate Russia. “It’s not that we need the shield, but it’s about the way we’re treated here,” Mr. Walesa said on Polish TV.”

StarKist is the major employer in American Samoa employing 75% of the Samoan work force.

In January, 2007 when the minimum wage was increased from $5.15 to $7.25, Pelosi had

American Samoa exempted from the increase so Del Monte would not have to pay the higher wage. This would make Del Monte products less expensive than that of its competitors.

Last week when the huge bailout bill was passed, Pelosi added an earmark to the final bill adding $33 million dollars for an “economic development credit in American Samoa ”

O.K. your pushed my last button I self identify as a liberal. As a member of a union I was pulled to the side in the most remote part of a warehouse ant told by the shop steward to “knock it off”. I asked him what was the meaning of his request he said “your stats for work efficeny are at 200% or more every day and we (the UNION) are trying to get these efficeny ratings thrown out.” Believe me when I say unions are for the people who don’t want to work. BTW I had to agree to join the union or the company I worked for would not be allowed (their word) to hire me.

After military service and working my way through school. I began work in the IT field. Now today I find myself on the street after 25 years with a company because they have outsourced my job to Brazil. Twelve years until I can access the money I have paid into SS for the past thirty seven years. Oh there are still positions I could do at my former employer but they have hired
people from India to come here with special work visas because they “cannot find U.S. citizens to do the work”. WHAT? Here I am pick me! Corporations are abusing these laws left and right. If the government cared they would crack down on these abuses now. That would be change I can believe in.

Congress sold us out to big busineess, and big business has deserted us. That’s where the rage should be directed, not at Obama. But you’re right, he could be doing something to stop it.

Are you talking full SS benefits at 67 or did you start work at 13? At least with 25 years with the company you should have a pension coming and a sizeable 401(k). I’d recommend you start drawing your reduced SS benefits at 62 and put them in savings. A bird in the hand… But talk to your acountant or financial advisor.

“America armed, but guns not necessarily loaded”

“We are working overtime and still can’t keep up with the demand,” said Al Russo, spokesman for North Carolina-based Remington Arms Company, which makes bullets for rifles, handguns and shotguns. “We’ve had to add a fourth shift and go 24-7. It’s a phenomenon that I have not seen before in my 30 years in the business.”

“Americans usually buy about 7 billion rounds of ammunition a year, according to the National Rifle Association. In the past year, that figure has jumped to about 9 billion rounds, said NRA spokeswoman Vickie Cieplak.” (Good source of revenue?)

Can’t agree with ya’.

The doctors in congress can say all they wish, I remember that Bill Frist certainly did. I’m more comfortable with the opinions of Doctors who are still praticing – still in the trenches so to speak.

AND, I don’t think his promise to raise the taxes on the middle class is the least bit unrealistic.

Consider this “The tax legislation enacted under President George W. Bush from 2001 through 2006 will cost $2.48 trillion over the 2001-2010 period.” (Citizens for Tax Justice) This was a change in the tax rate from 39% to 35% on the teeny tiny minority of the wealthiest Americans.

These are the folks who’s taxes will and should increase.

Everyone got a tax break under Bush, just most of it didn’t mean that much to anyone but the most wealthy among us, but only because the Democrats insisted. With a nearly $2 trillion deficit this year and over a trillion for years to come, we’re all going to have to start paying our fair share. We aren’t paying anything, but I planned it like that. Do you feel like you could kick in a little more and not be over-burdened?

Of course because the very premise of the neo-con philosophy is for America to rape the rest of the world in order to keep Americans living the American lifestyle. Ever read the PNAC document. Founding document of the Neo-Cons, it espouses creating an American world empire using military force to overthrow government that are important to American vital interests(read “large American corporations overseas”) Basically it is an imperialistic, colonial policy.
