Part XVII in our national conversation about race

As of 10:50 a.m., this was the lead banner headline at the Drudge Report:

WHITE STUDENT BEATEN ON SCHOOL BUS; CROWD CHEERS

Of all the thing’s occurring in the nation and the world, that’s the story that Matthew Drudge believes his readers will be most interested in seeing and will draw the most traffic. And nobody ever said that Drudge does not know his audience.

The incident occurred in St. Louis. It’s ugly. But ladies and gentlemen, it ain’t national news. I can remember witnessing probably a dozen such instances in my own high school years, with kids responding to a fight between their peers in just the fashion they do in the video. Most of you can probably say the same. I guarantee you something similar has occurred dozens of times this very day on school buses or at high schools around the country, and in most instances it had nothing to do with race and everything to do with the fact that high school can be closer to “Lord of the Flies” than most people want to admit.

But in this case the kid getting picked on is white. The boy who attacks him is black. And there’s video. So in Drudge’s world, it’s the biggest news story of the day.

There has been a lot of discussion in the past week about the role that racial resentment among white males plays in the conservative movement. I think it’s easy to exaggerate it, and I think it’s wrong to try to discredit all opposition to Barack Obama as somehow race-related, because it just isn’t. Obama is trying to do big things, and big things need to be questioned and challenged. We have to have room for that in our national life.

However, Drudge’s reaction weighs very, very heavily on the other side of the scale. He understands better than most how much power racial resentment has among his readership, and he is clearly pandering to it. It is compelling proof that for many, this is not about policies or the national debt or health care reform but something much more primal.

UPDATE, as of 3 p.m.: Just saw this from Hank Johnson, Democratic congressman from Georgia, referring to his colleague from South Carolina, Joe Wilson.

“”It did not help the cause of diversity and tolerance with his remarks. If I was a betting man, I’d say it instigated more racist sentiment, feeling that it’s OK, that you don’t have to bury it down,” Johnson said.

“I guess we’ll probably have folks putting on white hoods and white uniforms again and riding through the countryside, intimidating people,” he said. “That’s the logical conclusion if this kind of attitude is not rebuked.”

That’s crazy talk. That’s garbage and nonsense. You can’t justify charges of racism on the words “you lie” and you certainly can’t make charges that inflammatory based on little or no evidence.

Johnson now needs to apologize, publicly, the sooner the better. That’s just wrong.

You and your children and grand children and great grandchildren and great, great grand children and great, great, great grandchildren and great, great, great, great grandchildren onwards for 400 years watch some other race subjugate you. Murder you. Brutalize you. Lynch you. Keep you unempowered. ALL systematically.

More people died fighting to end slavery in the Civil War than have been lynched or brutalized all throughout the entire history of the United States.

Mumbling morons that wish vengeance on other people and those who cheer that notion on, are no better than the scum who enslaved people in the first place.

AMVET,

Have never committed any of the things you suggest,
Don’t know any who have
Don’t even know any who have had any of that done to them, or seen it done to any other.

Maybe it is your older generation that is still holding all of the racist and bigot filled ideas.

By the way I am mostly Scottish, does that mean I should have bad feelings about brits? You know they did the same thing to my people. :)

Confederate history month-Fact- There were free blacks living in the Confederate states…..

CMT- Didn’t know country was another one of thoe code words you all keep speaking of.

I gotta get my hands on a comprehensive list of those code words……. ;)

AM VET, thanks for your 1:58. I often wish that a person could tell me apart from these “white pride” freaks with just a glance, but sadly, only the palest specks of melanin emerge in summer. My words and actions will have to set me apart, so I hope people will forgive me if I seem to be trying too hard. As long as these haters still walk among us, it will never be enough.

Remember this?
——————-

Sometimes I’m right then I can be wrong

My own beliefs are in my songs

A butcher, a banker, a drummer and then

Makes no difference what group I’m in

I am everyday people

There is a blue one who can’t accept

The green one for living with

a black ones tryin’ to be a skinny one

Different strokes for different folks

And so on and so on and scooby dooby dooby

Ooh sha sha

We gotta live together

I am no better and neither are you

We’re all the same whatever we do

You love me you hate me

You know me and then

Still can’t figure out the bag I’m in

I am everyday people

There is a new man

That doesn’t like the short man

For being such a rich one

That will not help the poor one

Different strokes for different folks

And so on and so on scooby dooby dooby

Ooh sha sha

We got to live together

There is a yellow one that won’t

Accept the black one

That won’t accept the red one

That won’t accept the white one

Different strokes for different folks

And so on and so on and

Scooby dooby dooby

Ooh sha sha

I am everyday people

Hef, that’s how it is all over. One race does another wrong and the other tries to even the score. I remember Yusef Hawkins in Bensonhurst, Latasha Harlins, Robbie Tolan. Every race in America can come up with names and instances.

-In an obvious reference to the Ku Klux Klan, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., said Tuesday that people will put on “white hoods and ride through the countryside” if emerging racist attitudes, which he says were subtly supported by Wilson, are not rebuked. He said Wilson must be disciplined as an example.

Bookman, this would not be thetype of race baiting you were speaking of would it?

And a GA democrat none the less.

How could teh words “you lie” be seen as racism?
How is it OK for a congresman to compare “you lie” to the Ku Klux Klan?

But it is far worse when white people do it right?

“AmVet” Dude you sad! Poor, poor you. It must be so hard for you to know that only your race has had to endure hardships in the history of this planet. No one else on this entire planet has had any issues only the Black race. Well hate to break to you and your great, great, great, great, great granddaddy, but suck it up. There is not a religion, a race, a gender that hasn’t been hit upon one time or another in this world. And oh guess what here is a shocker, yes the white man has been trodden upon.

What you say this can’t be true, because the white man has caused all the problems in the world. Pick up a book and become educated, your lack of intelligence is appalling. I will help you get started. Roman Empire, they had complete control over a little island you might know as England. Their domain lasted over 500 years sport. The Mongol Empire, The Ostrogoths, the Visigoths and so on. So please go cry on somebody else’s shoulder.

However I do like your points of murder you, lynch you, brutalize you. It all sounds like what is going on in Africa right now. I wonder why. But of course I am sure you will enlighten us that it is whitey that is controlling Africa, and has kept it from coming out of the dark ages.

How nice it must be for you to use an entire race as a crutch for you and your ancestors failings throughout history.

Apparently the reason the issues were written about differently is because white people are the historical majority…..

Those who will not condone or allow these irrefutable and countless crimes to continue. Even in the most subtle and covert ways. And those who will. Or at least DENY them and so tacitly approve of systemic and de facto bigotry. And endlessly obfuscate and justify with their moral equivalencies like mystery meat.

Take your stand as you see fit.

Each and every group you could think of has in some way been subject to hate, based upon a genetic condition.

The problem is when comments are made like it is worse when a white person does the same thing, as was done here today.

‘Gee, look how much I’m not a racist – I’ll blame the stupid white kid for sitting down in an empty seat on his school bus and inciting those poor black kids to act like animals’. ‘If he’d just moved away and not made the beating continue, he wouldn’t have given the rest of the mob anything to laugh and cheer about’ ‘Stupid Drudge for linking it too!”
Typical Liberal, sees Black & White rather than Right & Wrong.
Reaffirms why I left the race-obsessed/racist DNC. Only a fool believes someone is not a racist who constantly believes minorities are inferior and can’t succeed without the benevolent help of the white liberals and their affirmative action programs. Liberals never truly see minorities as equals and never will. This country of over 300 million people just elected a black man to the highest position in the free world and the liberals believe they ‘propped’ him up there, without any merit given to the talent, charisma and intellect of the individual.
Wake up America and stop focusing on race over the actions of individuals.

That NO justice is to be allowed.

Frankly, some of you here make me sick to realize we share a common ethnicity…

You don’t presume much, do you, AmVet.

What good does it serve to replace a physical ball and chain with a psychological ball and chain?

I’m hearing more and more black leaders address this very issue. Aside from the Jeremiah Wrights, many are saying that carrying burdens from the past while trying to move forward leaves people idling which is exactly what the Democratic party wants. Can’t use ‘em if they’re movin’ on up. If they can remain victims, they’ll be needing a champion. We know how liberals love to champion causes.

Many self-professed blacks on these sites have said themselves, that the Jesse Jacksons, Al Sharptons (others) have had their heyday and no longer serve a useful purpose. So here’s the question…

If civil rights leaders of old are no longer useful and Barack Obama is not useful (you said that yourself) then who’s left? Your sympathy certainly isn’t going to benefit the black community. Again…who does that leave?

White liberals!!?!!

Oh puleeze.

This is for you, DDR. You dig deep into your pockets to support your colleges, your own people? My church, for as long as I’ve been attending, has supported The UNCF (United Negro College Fund). The United Methodist Church is among one of their biggest contributors. The International Heifer Program with donations going to Africa where real poverty is reality, not something that politicians get to define so that they can project for the T.V. screen.

How quickly you forget the fact that it’s conservatives who do most of the charitable giving while liberals only talk about it.

I pray for the day that we can all come together, look our representatives in the eye and say….

The white racist repubozoputzotards can’t stand it and are wall to wall and continuously livid that a black man is in the white house cleaning up the messes they were obvliviously and stupidly making.

The repubozoputzotards are trying to come between doctors and their patients. 73% of doctors in the large NEJM poll published yesterday want public option. 77% of patients in 4 recent large polls want public option. Repubozoputzotards want continuous insurance price gouging and to continuously destabilize Medicare by forbidding competitive bidding in Part D.

You’ll never ever see a repubozoputzotard here dig in and discuss exponentially rising insurance premiums, deductibles, and the dropping of 14000 a day in the US predomninantly because they get sick and insurance companies don’t want to pay out.

You’ll never see and I haven’t seen a Repubozo explain why Bill Frist and the Repubozos set up Medicare in 2003 to forbid competitive bidding on drugs when every hospital from Piedmont to Pill Hill to Kennestone Wellpoint to Emory Healthcare enjoys the big price break of competitive bidding for drugs via consortium.

These topics are like a third rail to the racist repubozoputzotards. They want their white man in the white house. They want their country back they say, meaning they’re proud to be poor and dropped by their insurance companies when they get sick. They think they’re immune from serious illness.

Why are the repubozos here trying to get between doctors and their patients? We know why the ones in Congress are–they’re on the payroll of insurance companies.

You’ll never see a rapubozo here take this on:

“DebbieDoRight”
I have to admit your posts amuse me the most. You are the very definition of why racism, hate and bigotry will never end in our lifetime.
According to you, pretty much all of Washington’s monuments were made by whom exactly? Are we to understand that all of DC’S monuments were made by blacks and Hispanics? Hate to break it to you, but I don’t go to DC and look at the Viet Nam Memorial and WWII memorial and think boy I sure am proud of all of the white people. And I bet no one else does either.
And WET wouldn’t allow your voices to be heard? What?
Sanford and Son, Bill Cosby, Family Matters, Chico and the Man, Good Times, Martin, The Jefferson’s, Heck even Star Trek, First interracial kiss, black woman in a leading row, Korean in a leading row, and this was in the 60’s.
My problem now, is when I choose to watch a movie on BET, I now have to explain to my daughter why its say “BLACK BUSTER” instead of block buster. Or maybe as a white man I am not suppose to be watching BET. In regards to Univision or Telemundo, don’t you believe that has more to do with the language barrier?
January – December is WHITE history month. That statement alone shows your heart.
We raise money for “OUR” colleges, same as above. We keep these colleges because it reminds us of how far we come. Who is not letting go of the past now.
Deny the Holocaust, To whom is this directed to?
Robbed the Indians. YOU ARE RIGHT! And guess what your race did too. Ever heard of the Buffalo Soldiers? And at this moment they are raising funds to build a grand monument to them in El Paso. There’s a quandary for you. A statue for your race, yet they contributed to the destruction of the American Indian. What will you do?
Debbie you are awful quick to point out the weakness in the white race, or you able to do it to yourself?
Think about it.

Affirmative action? Forced busing?

Absolutely necessary in historical terms. I know of few conservatives who would have argued against them now or at the time. It was old democrats what done that.

I’m of the opinion that blacks ARE equal. It’s the Democratic party that keeps reminding them they’re not.

I have to pat my on the back here. My neighbor called the other day…one of my many black neighbors…one of many whom I admire and respect for a myriad of reasons

He’s become very active in the Tea Party movement. Is actively engaged in sit-downs with reps (David Scott) and local conservative leaders like Herman Caine, Deborah Honeycutt. Anyway he wanted to thank me for drawing up the sign he carries with a message that is far more inflammatory than anything I would have chosen but I asked him what he wanted the sign to say. I followed his instructions. He seems to think THAT sign has been the most photographed in Georgia.

I was happy to penne his thoughts with a BOLD BLACK MARKER.

Maybe my post came off as too accusatory. I was responding to this:

We raise money to fund our colleges because that’s our traditions.

Sometimes…just sometimes it would be nice to have Christians represent something other than a target of liberalism. The colleges would go empty were it not for those who financially help them to attend.

All too often many, of the liberal persuasion, (here and elsewhere) sit silently by while we conservative christians are bombarded with attacks for no other reason than to diminish our existence…shake our foundation with the intention of crumbling it.

It ain’t gonna happen but the audience here seems to take pleasure in watching their efforts to try.

You would prefer charitable giving move through politicians? Find out how your church handles charitable giving. I can assure you, the bulk of our giving does not go to our overhead expenses. We have done everything in our power to cut back on those so that we could reach out and help, not only our community, but overseas as well.

It has definitely been a struggle to get to this point. You’ll just have to forgive us the need to congregate.

@@ I was not saying anything derogatory about Real Christians; I was making a point that Blacks have UNCF drives because that’s how we’ve funded the colleges for years. It started from going church to church and door to door. Although I grew up mostly Catholic, (who’s coffers are almost boundless); I still respect and understand the drive behind blacks, some poorly educated themselves, putting together their pennies, nickles and dimes to support “their” colleges.

The dig on the Christian Coalition — that is what it is. I have no respect for them or their causes. However Real Christians are a totally different matter. Real Christians don’t have “agendas” or “clauses or contracts” that you need to navigate in order to be a part of God’s Love.

As I stated earlier, I was answering to Eli Stone’s derogatory, inflammatory remarks about minorities. It amazes me that people like him will say “_____________ (fill in the blank); need to stop depending on the Government and do things for themselves”, and then turn around and say black/hispanic/ethnic owned enterprises like BET and Telemundo are “racists”, because they cater mainly to blacks/hispanics.

Hypocrites, agitators and liars distort truths to bend them to fit their own ideologies and agendas; but I’m glad that there are people on this board/blog, yourself included, who aren’t afraid to call them out on it. I’m sure not going to let a blatant racist rant like what Eli Stone posted go without a rebuttal; that would be so un-Debbie-like.
