8:45 pm September 9, 2009, by Jay
“Instead of honest debate, we have seen scare tactics. Some have dug into unyielding ideological camps that offer no hope of compromise. Too many have used this as an opportunity to score short-term political points, even if it robs the country of our opportunity to solve a long-term challenge. And out of this blizzard of charges and counter-charges, confusion has reigned.
Well the time for bickering is over. The time for games has passed. Now is the season for action. Now is when we must bring the best ideas of both parties together, and show the American people that we can still do what we were sent here to do. Now is the time to deliver on health care.”

Fair enough RollerGirl. I can definitely respect your opinion, kudos for being a small business owner. I’m also of the opinion that sometimes the government tries too hard to be the save-all. In the case of health care costs, I kinda think there has to be a middle ground. If there’s no government intervention, we’re at the mercy of the health care industry to control themselves. I know from working in retail, the first priorty for a business is profitability. I just don’t see the insurance companies willing to curb their profitability even by the smallest amount to provide affordable coverage to those who can afford it the least but need it the most.

GOP’s Site: It’s “not permissible to use language that is personally offensive to the President”
http://rules-republicans.house.gov/Educational/Read.asp...
References to the Senate or Executive Branch
Until the 109th Congress, it was not in order to make certain references to the Senate or individual senators. However, at the beginning of that Congress, the House removed the prohibition on making references to the Senate, leaving only the requirement that debate be confined to the question under debate and avoid “personality.” The precedents of the House allow a wide latitude in criticism of the President, other executive officials, and the government itself. However, it is not permissible to use language that is personally offensive to the President, such as referring to him as a “hypocrite” or a “liar.” Similarly, it is not in order to refer to the President as “intellectually dishonest” or an action taken by the President as “cowardly.” References to the Vice President, in spite of his role as President of the Senate, are measured against the standard used for the President rather than prior standards used to govern the Senate.

The president did a great job of spelling out what’s at stake here, and not just in terms of health care, but in terms of our country’s future. If we can’t make real progress this time, we’ve got bigger problems than just this or that issue — we’ve got a system of government that’s fundamentally flawed. It will prove that we need campaign finance reform before we can ever get health care or any other kind of real reform.
I watched the Republican response, too, and glaringly absent were the kinds of consumer protections that President Obama spelled out. If we don’t hold the insurance companies accountable, there’s no real reform.

Well, Angry Black Man @9:42, I guess I’m not aware of any free market when it comes to health insurance. Or any power to enforce accountability that I have as a consumer. I pretty much have two choices through my employer — take it or leave it. And individually, I can buy insurance at an exhorbitant cost (thankfully I have no preexisting condition that I know of), then despite having paid premiums in full and on time, be dropped when we get sick because I forgot to disclose some unrelated condition!? So, how, as an individual, am I to hold these companies accountable? We the people formed our government to advocate for us. That’s not an overreach of power; that’s exactly the power that government is supposed to have.

According to laws passed previously, anyone showing up at emergency rooms can not be denied treatment. It has nothing to do with insurance. That’s where people are misled with the whole illegal argument. Visitors coming to this country legally usually have some kind of travel insurance. If they get sick or hurt, they’re covered. Some people come here to have their children. They show proof of insurance and ability to pay the bill, and they’re allowed to use our medical system. Those who are here illegally can’t get insurance coverage. They cannot usually afford to visit private practices, so they go for treatment where they can’t be turned down, the emergency room. Until there’s a better way to track and remove illegals, you’re going to have to face the fact that as long as they go to the emergency room, we’ll all be paying the bill.

Let’s do 5 things prior to passing a health care bill:
1. Get out of bed with the trial lawyers and pass meaningful tort reform.
2. Let’s stop giving free health care to illegals. California could especially benefit from this.
3. Instill the option to buy health care insurance across state lines.
4. Admit the fact that if Medicare and Medicaid are suffering from billions of dollars in mismanagement and incompetence, why isn’t the government doing something now to eliminate fraud and abuse? We don’t need to pass a health care bill to get this done.
5. Quit criticizing those who oppose you. The “transparent administration” has reached a point where it is obvious that it is my way or the highway for Bozo and his crowd.
We do need to reform the way we do business in the health care market. Just not the way that Bozo and his minions have it planned. This whole fiasco is dead before the vote.

Yes, the President did a great job of stating the obvious, without offering any way to pay for this “plan.”
Some of the suggestions he offered could already be taken care of in the free market. The “insurance exchange” for example. Why not allow insurers to compete across state lines and not have to deal with all of the mandates? If that were to happen tomorrow, you would see real choice in the insurance markets.
The respective states could subsidize the uninsurable with an “assigned risk pool” similar to the one that exists for high risk automobile drivers. It’s easy to villanize the insurance industry, but most of the underwriting guildelines they follow are set by the states they do business in. They have a fiduciary obligation to protect the policy holders they have. If they can’t, they either leave the state(like New York) or tighten up the underwriting process.
Forcing the insurers to eliminate the “pre-existing conditions” clause defeats the whole purpose of having insurance in the first place. You might as well wait until you have problems to start paying for it.

Sounds like you’ve been there before. It’s amazing to me that they’d put a facility like that in close proximity to people. But like you said, it’s all about the buck. I heard a figure today that was like $300 mil plus has been spent by lobbyists on the healthcare debate this year. Just imagine what that $300 mil plus could do in the hands of those who really need it.

Taxpayer,
The government requiring me to buy insurance to breath American air is one FU proposal.

Wilson is nothing but another South Carolina redneck chasing the almighty dollar. Forget about hard work or morals. The nut jobs and malcontents of America are the ones who get the lucrative book deals or TV shows. Look for disgraced Governor Sanford and Wilson to share the same publisher. Maybe they can piggy back with the “Octo Mom.”

Tort reform, a non issue. Just try and sue in Georgia/Florida and in other states. The states themselves have almost set it up where you can’t sue hospital’s Dr.’s etc. Look it up for yourselves.

So, you are not in favor of compromise or factual debate, just more of the same old hyperbolating.

I really can’t believe Obozo actually used the parallel of auto insurance to health insurance and the required coverage by law. If I don’t own a car OBOZO, then I don’t have to buy auto insurance. He said that right on national television.
