In a piece calling for a more civil dialogue on health-care reform, my colleague Jim Galloway posted a photograph taken at this weekend’s rally at Centennial Olympic Park opposing President Obama’s health-care reform plan.
Let me point your attention to the man literally if not figuratively to the far left, the man holding a neatly printed sign that reads:
“THIS TIME WE DID NOT BRING OUR GUNS”
This time?
It’s hard to misinterpret the message that sign is intended to communicate.
I would argue that it is a threat intended to terrorize. It is an effort to use the spectre of violence to frighten people into accepting an outcome that they would otherwise not accept.
It is attempted intimidation. It is an acknowledgment that, lacking the intellectual firepower and ammunition to carry the day, the person in question is prepared to try to settle the issue using the kind of firepower and ammunition that any idiot can purchase at a local gunshop.
It also reflects a growing mindset among some that the government just isn’t listening and thus must be made to listen, one way or the other. There’s a fundamental childishness to that attitude, a notion that equates listening to agreement. The person in question is not prepared to accept the idea that having listened to him, a majority of his fellow Americans might decide that he is wrong. So he reserves the right to try to impose his view at the point of a gun.
The sad part is, the guy probably sees himself as a defender of freedom and democracy.
(At Talking Points Memo, Rachel Slajda has compiled reports from around the country of people taking it another step farther by bringing actual firearms to political events. Outside an event today in Phoenix at which President Obama appeared, two men were seen carrying AR-15 assault rifles. )

That’s right Jay. Try to marginalize the people that don’t walk goose-step with you and Obama and your liberal progressive agenda by pointing out something that could be construed as threatening but obviously is not. This sign looks metaphorical to those not so inclined to find the conservative devil hiding behind every corner (unlike yourself). If it makes you feel better to try to make those people against Obama & Co.’s socialist idiocy as being a threat to civility, so be it. The bottom line is, the majority of this country does not believe like you and there is nothing that you and your bottom feeding progressive “journalist” class can do about it. We live in one world. You and your Never Never land liberal buddies live in another. Keep this up, and you will soon go the way of Tucker as in, you will be coined irrelavent. You have lost every last ounce of objectivity that you may have had (though you had very little in the first place). What conservative monster did you wrong in the past Jay? Someone must have because you seem not to be able to get over it. Your inflexibility to anything but your liberal/socialist idealogy is going to be your undoing. Let’s face it, we all want what’s best for our country. But the greatest single thing about America is that when we, the low down working class see cow pie, we call it cow pie. At least the majority of the country does. Obama better slide to the middle soon or he is toast. He better tell the real president, Rham Emanuel, that they can’t afford, politically, to bulldoze their Harvard learned liberal idealogies down America’s throat. Harvard don’t pay our bills for us Jay.

Good article by Jay. Much of the violence that has actually happened like the shooting of Dr. Tiller, and the killing at the Holocaust Museum have their genisis in the racial unmitigated hatred that has become the mantra of an increasingly small island of the extreme right. What used to be the Republican party with real values and educated members –about the time William F. Buckley Jr. was at his height at the National Review is completely dead; never to return again. It’s been downhill ever since.
The Republican mantra has always been “if ah can’t do it with mah anatomy cause it don’t work , ah’ll do it with mah gun.”
The reality is, instead of looking for ways to broaden its appeal, the way Kay Baily Hutchison is presciently suggesting in her campaign for govenor of Texas, the Republican party is shrinking faster than ice caps in the Artic circle. That base is meltin’ baby, but it’s all good.
Speaking of really scarry developments, now we have the announcement of future convict Tom Delay as a contestant on “Dancing With the Stars.”

Whazza coop? They’ve been around for 30 years. Cobb EMC is a coop. It’s under active federal investigation, embezzled a ton of money, hidden all their records which had to be seized with a subpoena, and is full of corruption where a few board members steal from the members.
Your rates with Cobb EMC are significantly more than from Southern Company/Georgia Power.
Coops, around for 30 years have brought you:
In 2008:
Average Insurance Cost: $12, 680
Employer $9,325
Worker $3,354
430 People Lose Coverage per Day in Georgia. 430 more have gotten the great news today by close of business.
It’s rising exponentially and in about 3 years it’s going to be $21,500 in Georgia.
The administrative costs of private insurance have swollen to hundreds of millions of dollars because the brunt of their money is spent on Bunny Ranch contributions to Congress, and advertising.
The paper work doctors are forced to shuffle around and the administrative costs of banging on the insurance companies to get them to pay you could be saved with the competition of a public option easily.
But it’s always about fear. The insurance companies are “skeeerred” of competition. The pharmaceutical companies are “skeeerrred” of competition which is why they are spending hundreds of millions trying to defeat patent window revision for drugs and competitive bidding for Medicare and competition for the insurance companies in the form of a public option.
If Dick Armey is so freaked by government involvement then where were these people when they were secretly sanctioning illegal wiretapping of every domestic phone conversationand illegal email capture? Where were they when they let the phone companies off the hook for doing the illegal wiretapping of all domestic conversations for years?

Consider some of the words of Keith Olbermann, one of the left’s loonier spokesmen, during W’s administration:
“We now face what our ancestors faced at other times of exaggerated crisis and melodramatic fear-mongering: A government more dangerous to our liberty than is the enemy it claims to protect us from.” (Commenting on the setting up of military trials for terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay, “Countdown,” Oct. 18, 2006)
“A President who lied us into a war and, in so doing, needlessly killed 3,584 of our family and friends and neighbors; a President whose administration initially tried to destroy the first man to nail that lie; a President whose henchmen then ruined the career of the intelligence asset that was his wife when intelligence assets were never more essential to the viability of the Republic; a President like that has tonight freed from the prospect of prison the only man ever to come to trial for one of the component felonies in what may be the greatest crime of this young century.” (On Bush’s commuting Lewis Libby’s prison sentence, “Countdown,” July 2, 2007.)
“Al Qaeda really hurt us, but not as much as Rupert Murdoch has hurt us, particularly in the case of Fox News. Fox News is worse than al Qaeda-worse for our society. It’s as dangerous as the Ku Klux Klan ever was.” (In an interview with Playboy magazine, October 2007 issue.)
You don’t have to claim you have a gun that you may or may not produce to be dangerous. Shout “Ku Klux Klan” and such and maybe you’ll get Black Panther Party members with clubs (and whose knows what else) to show up at polling places.

NO,,blowing up skyscrapers with planes is trying to terrorize people. Or blowing up police stations like Ayers, Obama’s buddy, did when trying to terrorize. Holding up a sign is not terrorism except for cowards.
Then Bookman makes one true statement. He declares that the man with the sign might see himself as a defender of freedom and democracy
YES, he probably does and is probably a veteran who thinks this healthcare policy is a stinker. He’s right about that.
What was needed at that rally was one little ol’ lady to go over and tap the guy on the shoulder and say”Buddy, that sign gives the wrong impression. Put it away.” He’d probably be surprised and say OK.
The insane nutcases are shooting up churches and college students in class. They are not carryng signs and protesting at a political meeting.
I’m sure you get personal threats, Bookman, and that is wrong. But you have gone overboard here about nothing illegal. NOthing personal. Just a man who wants his representatives to know his objections.
. Pull yourself together. A little man with a sign is not the one endangering the USA. There are far greater dangers you need to fight. I wish you could get upset over them. Seems you are not paid to do that.
.
Then Bookman goes wrong again. No one can legally buy a gun without a permit. In most places, you cannot carry a gun without a permit. .

“the inability to discern the difference between reasonable and lunacy.”
Maybe. But only if there is agreement on what constitutes reasonable and what constitutes lunacy.

I do believe this is Bush’s head in a basket beneath a guillotine.
Time and location?
Nine days before the 2008 Presidential election, the Obama campaign held a rally in Denver.
That’s in the U.S.of A.

You must pass a background check to buy a gun from a dealer. A carry permit is to conceal one after you have bought it. If you buy a firearm at a show from an individual, no check is required.

Some of us actually read the commentators comments before posting, and they are just that, comments, but waste of time with you
Chill md. Jay has chosen to follow the standard definition for comments in the industry but since definitions bother you so much, you go right ahead and re-define comments differently, just for yourself.

jay, have you confirmed that photo as legit yet? It really does look altered.
If the guy holding that poster wasn’t indeed holding THAT poster and sees your column, couldn’t he sue you for liable? I mean…
you basically called him a threat to the President.

Far left ultra Liberal Jay doesn’t get it. Nationalized health care is a step towards taking more of our freedoms away. If they choose our doctors or whether we live or die, then what’s next? I’m sorry, but this is what Hitler did to the Hebrews and others. We know how that story turned out. Leftist Communist Jay is taking the sign way too seriously. I love you Jay and would protect you because you’re still a born-American (I think). I would protect you with my guns. Don’t worry about this patriot at Centennial Park. It’s the lonely secular progressives who hate society that we all have to worry about. God Bless…..

The “base’ has finally morphed into what it was always meant to be – an irrational, undereducated, virulently impotent but enraged, ragtag amalgam of societal misfits, would-be Klanners/Aryan Nation/skinhead types and the flat earth bible thumpers.
You’re doing a heckuva job, connies…’
The libs are up in the body count. Gym shooter, a fervant obama suporter, got three. 89 year old WWII vet at the museum got one.

Honestly, are there any MEN left in this world who are not afraid of EVERYTHING?
Apparently not, considering the size of some of those weapons that they feel they need at a public gathering of other unarmed people. I mean, if these gun-toters were physical midgets, maybe the guns would be justified. But being mental midgets should actually disqualify them from having any right whatsoever to anything that they could hurt themselves or others with.

That’s right, keep arguing against provisions that ARE NOT in the bills being considered. THAT’s they way to educate yourself and others on what is being discussed. Keep it up, you fit RIGHT in.

Jay,
I did indeed see pictures of Bush hung in effigy. Pardon me if I didn’t capture the details, but it was during an anti war rally, and the caption in the newspaper was something to the effect of Feelings run high at anti war rally.
Now if you research was searching for an article or headline which used the words Bush hung in Effigy, I doubt you would find it. Much like I suspect if a few years in the future someone researches gun threats over health care reform, I doubt they will pick up your subject photo.
Just the same, I do remember it because it was strange to me that this was not mentioned in the caption.

Looks like Jay B might be right, but since this is the first set of Bush protest photos right here in the good ole U S of A I’ve looked at in a search that took three seconds I somehow think the smart money is on booger all except the part about the press reporting it. These probably are the reporters
Possibly not safe for work due to libs and their language problems.

Seems they see it as a political statement about their ‘rights.’ O-kaayyyy. Ummm, just what legislation has Pres Obama proposed that would do away with this ‘right’? Must be a subparagraph bullet point in the legislation to turn us into a socialized country.
Y’know how it’s been said how profanity is the mark of a weak mind trying to express itself? Well, when you see someone carrying a reference to guns (or guns themselves, or any weapons) to a political event not dealing with gun control…
