New private jets for Congress? Are you kidding?

I don’t know whose mistake this is, but as speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi will get and deserve the blame. She ought to step in right now and announce that this thing is grounded permanently. The audacity is really unbelievable.

From the WSJ:

WASHINGTON — Bipartisan opposition is emerging in the Senate to a plan by House lawmakers to spend $550 million for additional passenger jets for senior government officials.

The resistance to buying eight Gulfstream and Boeing planes comes as members of both chambers of Congress embark on the busiest month of the year for official overseas travel. The plan to upgrade the fleet of government jets, which was included in a broader defense-funding bill, has also sparked criticism from the Pentagon, which has said it doesn’t need half of the new jets.

“The whole thing kind of makes me sick to my stomach,” said Sen. Claire McCaskill (D., Mo.) in an interview Sunday. “It is evidence that some of the cynicism about Washington is well placed — that people get out of touch and they spend money like it’s Monopoly money.”

It’s hard to believe this one ever got to the public ear. I can believe some idiot proposing this. But really, just because they are talking billions and trillions these days, did someone really think the public wouldn’t notice this?

Okay, Jay … under the heading “You Can’t Make ^%$£%&* Like this Up” …

the anti-healthcare demonstrator who was “attacked” (the jury is still out) in St. Louis while he was handing out “don’t tread on me” flags is now soliciting donations for his medical bills:

“Supporters cheered. Brown finished by telling the crowd that Gladney is accepting donations toward his medical expenses. Gladney told reporters he was recently laid off and has no health insurance.”

Jay,

According to Roll Call, our Reps. Sanford Bishop-D and Jack Kingston-R are two names mentioned for the requests although, according to this article, Kingston denies requesting the funding.

http://www.rollcall.com/media/37552-1.html

I had heard before that the two of them were involved because Gulfstream is located in their area and are campaign donors too.

Well, all the guys with kids were excited about the first day of school. And that goes double for the ones with kids starting the 1st grade. They done their best not to spoil the suprize that those little squiggles that show up on signs and stuff really stand for sounds. The first book their kid will ever see will be today. So the parents can say to the teachers, Here he is. His head is empty. Just pour the learning in till he’s full. If you don’t do the job, we’d hate to have to use NCLB on you because that would mean the furloughs we give you to start the year are just a taste of what you’re going to get. And don’t go giving tests and homework to ruin a good NASCAR or football weekend, neither.

Anyhow, I reckon Congress needs all the new jets so they can take their famblys with them on their overseas trips. They call it fact-finding. Me, I call it boondoggling. But I reckon I wouldn’t complain none if my boss down at the warehouse give us all new Cadillacs so we could visit all the bars we stock and see if everything’s going all right.

thomas August 10th, 2009 4:08 pm WROTE: Except for the one about IF YOU LIKE YOUR HEALTH CARE YOU CAN KEEP IT. That is only true if every single thing in the plan stays the exact same. If anything changes then a person in washington decides, not the consumer, if the plan is still acceptable.

CHRIS WRITES: Wrong again. The Bill states that, after a 5 year period, all NEW health insurance plans offered to the public, privately or through employers, will need to meet a minimum standard. So, if your NEW employer already has an EXISTING health insurance plan that meets or exceeds these minimums, you’re doing great and can enroll in that plan. However, if your NEW employer has an existing plan that does NOT meet the minimum care requirements, then you will have to shift to a Federal plan. Employers or Insurance companies will no longer be able to offer sub-standard plans that don’t take into account preventive care, pre-existing conditions, etc. So, how is this bad for anyone?

So please, read the Bill or go to http://www.factcheck.org to get some unbiased answers.

LETTER FROM THE BOSS

Dear employee:
As the CEO of this organization, I have resigned myself to the fact that
Barrack Obama is our President and that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way. To compensate for these increases, our prices would have to increase by about 10%. But since we cannot increase our prices right now due to the dismal state of the economy, we will have to lay off sixty of our employees instead. This has really been bothering me, since I believe we are family here and I didn’t know how to choose who would have to go. So, this is what I did. I walked through our parking lots and found sixty ‘Obama’ bumper stickers on our employees’ cars and have decided these folks will be the ones to let go. I can’t think of a more fair way to approach this problem. They voted for change…… I gave it to them.

I will see the rest of you at the annual company picnic.

It seems to me that the US is getting ready to implode. We have far-righters, far-lefters, and they are continually in a battle for the souls of americans but all they’re doing is polarizing the country. We’ve drawn lines and double-dared anyone with a differing opinion to cross. I had asked myself when did we become such a bitter, hate-filled, arrogant people; who’d rather be heard than be correct? It came to me when this happened:

December 12, 2000. The case that resolved the 2000 presidential election in favor of George W. Bush; by the United States Supreme Court.

We’ve been bickering, heckling, yelling and tearing each other down ever since. Where are all of the “middle of the roaders” at? Where are the moderates and independents? Maybe with them, we can get this country back in the business of doing the people’s business.

The money for these planes is chump change compared to the billions and billions that are being thrown away daily on the “stimulus” and that could be thrown away on this Health Care thing and this Climate Change package? Could it be that your animosity towards this is because you inherently know, as a good progressive, the right populist chord to strike with the “ignorant” public? And mean-while, you conveniently leave the real truth about the really destructive issues in the dark (such as those aforementioned) for you and your kind to push on an un-aware or on an uncaring public? I don’t come here much anymore because it is full of predictability from both you and your sad band of followers. The Liberal Lap Dogs (LLD’s) here are pathetically cliche. I have to say, as an outside looking and who is absolutely disallusioned with both political parties, with the exception of a few of the bloggers here, the conservatives win hands down as far as actually putting thought into their comments. The LLD’s spout the same old tired “Bush did this, Bush did that” rhetoric and they are incapable of actually looking objectively at what their leaders (Obama, Pelosi and Read), who are now and have been totally in control, are trying to do to this country. That is wearing very thin very fast with the American public. Un-American indeed. If Pelosi wants to see un-American, she only needs to look as far as her own mirror.

Actually it was a GA congressman. Gulfstream is in his district.

“According to Appropriations panel spokesman Brachman, members of Congress have been responsible for just one in seven of the flights, with Pentagon brass, White House officials and other Cabinet executives taking up the rest.”

“The planes are made in Georgia by Gulfstream, a subsidiary of General Dynamics. Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga., wrote the Appropriations panel to request $70 million for one of the planes. But the panel did not report this under disclosure rules since Congress was simply expanding an existing program.”

The committee saw a need for more. I don’t see how they do all the travel they do and stay sane. Maybe that’s part of the problem, they aren’t.

TnGelding: In my classes at law school; we’re told to study the stylings of Phyllis Schafley and to learn from her an art of debate. Schafley, as you know was a strong opponent to ERA and went up against some tough ladies in debates and forums concerning the ratification of the ammendment. The debates always started out semi-civil with Schafley on one side and some cute perky feminist on the other; however, by the end of the debate Schafley had turned the feminist into a raving, ranting, slobbering, shrill lunatic! She did this by oversimplifying, lieing and contorting the truth; because Schafley wasn’t bogged down by the need to be correct or accurate; her main weapon was to make the other person look like a fool, or a shrill, lonely woman; thereby exemplifying her case that feminism made women irrational, hard, and unstable.

She was a brilliant woman AND she helped to defeat ERA. I look around now and I see that the republicans have picked up her strategy and are using it effectively.

Here’s her bio: In a ten-year battle, Mrs. Schlafly led the pro-family movement to victory over the principal legislative goal of the radical feminists, called the Equal Rights Amendment. An articulate and successful opponent of the radical feminist movement, she appears in debate on college campuses more frequently than any other conservative. By the time Schlafly began campaigning in 1972, the amendment had already been ratified by 30 of the necessary 38 states. However, Schlafly was successful in organizing a grassroots campaign to oppose further states’ ratifications.

Critics of Schlafly have emphasized an apparent contradiction between her advocacy against the ERA and her role as a working professional. Feminist activist Gloria Steinem and author Pia de Solenni, among others, have noted what they consider irony in Schlafly’s role as an advocate for the full-time mother and wife, while being herself a lawyer, editor of a monthly newsletter, regular speaker at anti-liberal rallies, and political activist.

One of the reasons that members of congress need money is that they must maintain two residences–one in Washington and the other in their home state/district. This need makes them vulnerable to the temptations of the deep pockets of lobbyists. I say build dormitories owned by us, the taxpayers. Living together in close proximity might teach them to get along, and the money they save in not having to maintain a residence in D.C. they can use to fly coach on commercial airlines.

The most marked increase came among political independents, whose ranks of doubters swelled from 33 percent to 44 percent. Republican doubters grew from 59 percent to 66 percent, while Democratic skeptics stayed at around 20 percent.

What’s more, fewer Americans believe the effects of global warming have started to occur: 53 percent see signs of a hotter planet, down from 61 percent in 2008.

That’s us, TN.

Just finished. He mentioned that the Repubs introduced a plan right before the break, but received no publicity over it. He didn’t go into detail about it though. He made mention that they were looking at different ways to accomplish the reform. I kept hearing people ask questions about illegals. I guess they don’t realize that we pay for them whether they have insurance or not. Anchor babies are the perfect example. I just wish all politicians could just sit down and let common sense dictate the dialogue. But, that’s only in a fantasy world.

So you were on a conference call DURING a meeting? Illegals do present a problem. According to Obama they won’t be covered under the public plan so I guess we’ll still be paying for those who show up at emergency rooms. Can’t turn ‘em away…it would be inhumane. Maybe that’s why he’s delaying his immigration reform. He’s a sneaky fella, that Obama.

I was really just setting you up. I’ve met Westmoreland at social gatherings at my neighbor’s house. They’re pretty good friends. Nice enough fella as POLITICIANS go.

Here’s what Gallup found: The number of Americans who say the media have exaggerated global warming jumped to a record 41 percent in 2009, up from 35 percent a year ago.

Well, DUH! Those talking bobble heads on talk radio — you know the ones, Boortz, Limbaugh, Hannity, et al, aka, the blathering b00bs — along with the likes of FOXY News (all show, no content) do nothing but exaggerate, global warming and everything else that does not conform to their distorted views.

Republican doubters grew from 59 percent to 66 percent, while Democratic skeptics stayed at around 20 percent.

Double DUH! As the last few Republicans, with any gray matter left between the ears, leave the loser party, the percentage of remaining Republican doubters (also known as flat-earthers amongst other things) naturally increases. It’s simple math, even for a Republican. The Democrats, as usual, are the more stable bunch.

About 1995, I worked as a temp for a for profit organization that sold necessary medical packs and high speed physician counseling for private aircraft. They had over 500 military jets under contract.
Seems every general and admiral has his own private plane. Now that is a problem.

There was a decision in the middle of the winter to revise the contents of the emergency pacts. They had to send an employee to Hawaii to insert the new items in the packs. How many military personal planes are needed in Hawaii in the winter. Apparently 120 from the number of packs of items to be put in the emergency pacts. Can anyone say “spend the winter in Hawaii at government expense.”

Eight freaking planes is a joke.

The military spends 62.5 times that amount on their “personal planes.” Government waste and fraud, start with the military.

When I was stationed in NY city in the early 70s, the major general in command had his personal plane, his personal helicopter and his personal yacht all on the taxpayer’s dime. Ignorant as a post, but married to Westmoreland’s sister.

The line was right in the middle of the two you quoted. I guess that fact was inconvenient to the argument you wanted to make so you ignored it. Apparently those evil old Republicans are not the only ones who “do nothing but exaggerate everything that does not conform to their distorted views.”

WASHINGTON — House leaders are dropping plans to spend $330 million on Air Force passenger planes for use by senior government officials that were not requested by the Pentagon

Instead, the House will only seek $220 million to purchase one Gulfstream plane and three Boeing aircraft, as originally proposed by Department of Defense officials.

1) I guess all the people who call Bush stupid and lazy were also using them as a substitute for the n-word.

2) I Report did not call Obama lazy. You were the one who introduced the word, which you apparently associate with black people.

3) While I think it is silly to call Obama stupid, the left casual labellings of any who dare disagree with Obama as racist are practicing the lowest form of debate. Let’s not forget that Bill Clinton was also accused of racism when he dared campaign against him.

What is immigration to a Republican other than a cheap source of labor that requires no expensive outlay for health insurance, amongst other things. Further, when they are no longer of value, just turn on them, turn them in. Whatever. Not enough work for them, given the declines in the housing market. Even the carpet mills no longer need them. Hell, even the chicken processors no longer have the work for them and they really depend on cheap undocumented labor in order to keep those chicken wing prices affordable at Moes.

I didn’t think it was fair to fine them, among other things. I think we need to limit legal immigration as well, if we want to maintain the traditions of our country. The illegals that are acting illegally need to be deported ASAP. No future court hearings to skip out on , etc. By the time this economic meltdown shakes out a good many of them will be gone anyway. But how do you keep them from returning? I don’t support the Great Wall of The USA. The employers that have knowingly hired them need to be given amnesty if they’ll get them out of the country in 90 days.

I think they deliberately looked the other way to let them in to begin with to spur economic growth.

The Gallup organization (the same folks who performed the poll that we have been discussing) gave us this party split breakdown for Jul of this year and July of last year. This is the same time period covered by the pol we have been discussing.

JULY 2009

GOP 26%
IND 39%
DEM 33%

JULY 2008

GOP 27%
IND 35%
DEM 35%

So the GOP lost only 1 point last year, so it is not possible that the 10% swing in climate change opinion can be attributed to GOP folks switching to Independent. In short, your thesis is indisputably disproved and your snorting only makes your humiliation more complete.

Immigration review:

“I say let the prisoners pick the fruits,” said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of California, one of more than a dozen Republicans who took turns condemning a Senate bill that offers an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants an opportunity for citizenship.

“Anybody that votes for an amnesty bill deserves to be branded with a scarlet letter A,” said Rep. Steve King of Iowa, referring to a guest worker provision in the Senate measure.
