Frank Luntz, eat your heart out. (And yes, it’s travelin’ music).

WASHINGTON — Conservative opponents of the Democratic health-care reform initiative have adopted a strategy recommended to them by four high-priced political consultants hired from Great Britain, according to material leaked to this blog by high-placed sources.

Included in that material is a secretly taped video of a strategy session in which the consultants laid out their recommendation to a very enthusiastic response.

Just kidding, of course. In all the weeks we’ve been doing the Friday night Travelin’ Music segment, I don’t think we’ve ever featured the four lads from Liverpool, and that’s a travesty that had to be corrected.

By the way, at .42 into the video, I would almost swear that was Al Franken in the crowd. And at 1:23, I think I spotted actress Maura Tierney, one of my own personal favorites from back in her NewsRadio days. (OK, given the year maybe it’s not her. So maybe it’s her mother.)

Also, I thought it was quite cool how you folks carried on the tradition last Friday while I was on vacation. I got a kick out of that, I have to admit.

Let the merriment begin!

Freddie beats Fannie:

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Freddie Mac, the second largest provider of U.S. home mortgage funding, on Friday reported its first quarterly profit in two years as higher interest income and gains on its hedges offset still-lofty credit losses.

Government-controlled Freddie Mac reported second-quarter net income of $768 million, compared with a $9.9 billion loss in the first quarter and a $821 million deficit in the period a year ago.

After payments of $1.1 billion in preferred stock dividends to the U.S. Treasury, Freddie Mac had a net loss of 11 cents per diluted common share.

For the first quarter in four, Freddie Mac said it would not need a capital injection from the U.S. Treasury to maintain its business of providing credit for U.S. housing.

Luntz is a businessman. Sells his talents. Reps were getting hammered, Luntz gets called in to boost standing. Luntz tells’em they’re out of sync on the environment, people don’t necessarily buy gloom and doom but want the environment protected – more than Cheney and company. Tells’em they’ll curry more favor by using different lingo – like ‘climate change.’

And we know that just because you pay someone to give you advice, it doesn’t mean your political opponents won’t hear it and heed it.

Now, it’s difficult to find a Dem who says ‘global warming.’ Heck, advocacy groups even send out memos detailing the change in language.

“U.S. births fell in 2008, the first full year of the recession, marking the first annual decline in births since the start of the decade and ending an American baby boomlet.”

Another sign that the Republican base is slowly withering away.
For 2008 naturalized citizens were twice the birth rate.

Again, we need to forget Republicans & form a big tent Conservative Party. Remember, McCain received almost 57% of the white vote & still got stomped.

Luntz’s influence became particularly evident in 2003, when Environmental Working Group provided the press with a confidential memo he’d written after George W. Bush’s “arsenic in the water” gaffe early in his first term. (Or probably more accurately, a “confidential” memo—-Luntz’s advisories wind up in the press with such regularity that there’s little doubt that he is his own mole.) The memo offered suggestions for ameliorating the negative perceptions of Republicans’ environmental policies—-use “common-sense solutions” or “balanced approaches” in the place of “rollbacks” and “deregulation,” talk about “climate change”rather than “global warming,” stress the need for “sound science,” and make frequent use of words like cleaner, safer, and healthier. By the time the memo was made public, a lot of the language had already made it’s way into Republican speeches, paving the way for Bush administration initiatives with names like Clear Skies and Healthy Forests.

Brings back some old memories, Jay. My Aunt on my mom’s side of the family, and still a minor living at home, was told to dispose of her Rubber Soul while it was still in its prime. Damn. What a waste. Actually, she just hid it from my grandparent’s sight. What they did not know, did not hurt them. John was quite popular amongst the younger generation back then — more so than even some biblical character.
