Obama and the Henry Gates incident

We’ve got two separate questions at work in the Henry Louis Gates incident, which in this late-July news vacuum seems to getting more attention that it deserves.

Question One:

Gates has always struck me as a very intelligent, rational person. If I was “breaking into” my own home, and if I had ID to prove it was my own home, as Gates did, I could see getting a little upset if the responding cop treated me like a criminal. If I was a black man in that same situation in a neighborhood such as Cambridge, I could see that trigger getting a little shorter.

However, if I was the cop in that identical situation? I can’t promise I would have reacted differently either. Absent evidence of the interaction between the professor and the officer, we do not know and cannot know who was most at fault. Even if we had sound and videotape, I’m sure opinions would vary.

So who was right? Who knows.

Now, the second question: Should the president have ventured into the matter?

No. He should have expressed concern and moved on. But the world is not perfect, and neither are those of us who occupy it.  In expressing sympathy for Gates, Obama acknowledged and expressed the justified frustration that many black Americans feel in general about interactions with the police. I can’t blame him for that.

But in a perfect world, given his position, Obama would have explained that history without impugning the individual officer involved. His error was in translating the general problem into a specific criticism.

It’s not pretty, but this is how our national conversation about race continues. It’s all good in the end.

Really.

Gates behavior was atrocious. He should be thankful his neighbor reported TWO individuals “prowling” around and that an officer responded. After the officer shows up Gates begins behaving as the RACIST he is…read his comments…Gates is a racist. His supposed education level, one would think, would leave him more level-headed but no. He just wanted to attempt to exert some type of authority.

What a stupid man this Gates…caterwaling and screaming like some banshee in the night.

The cop did what he should have done. Everyone knows if you become belligerent with a cop you are gonna get cuffed but the again I guess Mr – “you dont know who you are messin with” – Gates was yet again clueless.

Obama should keep his mouth shut.

One thing is pretty obvious to me. Gates over-reacted to a situation he obviously did not understand himself. I think he owes the officer an apology. Big time.

Whenever one reads or hears the description “distinguished” by a newsy, it is always crucial to dig a little deeper.

Just prior to this unfortunate incident, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., had returned from China. While I am ignorant of the frequency of these trips, I am aware of some of the organizations Dr. Gates belongs to and affixes his name to.

One of these is the Bretton Woods Committee, the American-based, international lobby for the ultra-rich. In a recent letter to the US Congress (dated February 11, 2009) which listed Dr. Gates’ name, the Bretton Woods Committee successfully pressured the US Congress to remove the “Buy American” clause from the federal stimulus package.

This acts to promote the next colossal wave of American jobs offshored to China, as well as elsewhere. Should Dr. Gates have received any payment from the Chinese government (or any other Chinese organization as almost everything there is PLA-owned [People's Liberation Army]), he is required by federal law to be a registered foreign agent (FARA, Department of Justice).

Along with Dr. Gates’ name, the other names on this letter included the owners and senior-most executives of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, National Association of Manufacturers, Citigroup, AIG, JPMorgan Chase, Blackstone Group, KKR, Burson-Marsteller, etc.

Today I saw video of Professor Gates’ recounting the story and the Police Officer recounting the story. If body language is any indication, I would say that Professor Gates is much more credible than the Police Officer. According to Gates, the officer asked Gates to get his I.D. While Gates was going to the next room to get his I.D, he asked the officer for his name and badge number. The officer refused to answer Gates. Then it escalated. Maybe it could have been avoided if the police officer had just answered Gates.

Politically speaking, BO shouldn’t have called the act of cuffing an obviously non-threatening individual “stupid”. But it was stupid.

DG…interesting…the police officers account is somewhat different. I guess the only two that know the truth are the ever belligerent Gates and the officer.

Perhaps from this point forward two officers will be needed to respond to each and every call thereby avoiding such “racial” issues. But then of course the two officers will be in the wrong unless they are both black. But then of course the two officers will be lying… and on and on and on it goes.

Probably the best course of action is for the officer and Gates to forget it and move on.

Obama should keep his mouth shut.

I agree with Jay. This is another of those Rhorshach tests, like the OJ trial, that show how differently white and black America view an incident. On on the one hand, Gates likely was perturbed that he was seen as breakking into his own home (though I would appreciate my neighbor being on alert if they saw someone trying to force open my door). On the other hand, the police officer was just doing his job by responding. It’s hard to know who’s to blame, if anyone, so we should all withhold judgment, as the president should have. Such events make us uncomfortable because we don’t know for sure what happened and who is wrong. When there aren’t clear answers, we tend to choose sides and make assumptions based on our cultural perspective. Sad, but as Jay says, maybe a good tonic for us in the long run.

I know exactly what the cop went thru because I’ve been on the similar recieving end of what is the HUGE “bigot chip” some black people carry. I bartended at clubs for over a decade, and most had a requirement that to start a tab, ALL patrons had to leave an ID and credit card with the bar. It’s usually iron clad policy. House rules. To be plain, around 20% of the time, a black customer will pitch a hissy fit when asked for the ID/card; “oh, it’s because I’m BLACK?!!?” No matter how calm you are, no matter how you try to explain that EVERYONE must leave the documents as a way that the house protects itself from walk outs…they still scream their “racism!” diatribe. They’ll call me every name in the book, threaten, try and have management fire me, a few idiots have tried to come over the bar and others later in the week had called their lawyer. I had to come to the defense of my other bartenders that go thru the same thing. It is simply part of the business; and I’d bet every white bartender can regail you with many stories of “black-jerk-i-tude”. Moreover, the embarassed look of horror on my black regulars’ faces and their apologies for their “brother”, indicates that African-Americans are also aware that their are race-jerks in their community. GATES IS ONE OF THOSE.

Most people who claim “we should have a national dialogue” on race, don’t WANT an honest discussion about all it’s facets—they just want to continue their lecture about how naturally evil one race is, and how all misconduct from minorities is excusable and acceptable. Well, it isn’t.

After reading an account of the incident it appears that the officer was behaving more like an azzhole than a racist. Additionally, if you are familiar with any of Professor Gates’ work you would know that in 2006, Professor Gates wrote and produced the PBS documentary called “African American Lives.” It was the first documentary series to employ genealogy and genetic science to provide an understanding of African American history. As a part of the research, Professor Gates traced his own genealogy and found that he possessed some DNA from Western Africa, but to his surprise his DNA most closely matched that of people found in Western Europe.

Professor Gates is not a reactionary. He is one of the most educated and distinguished scholars that exist in this country. Read the full account of the story. He was treated like a jerk by a police officer with an attitude.

[[Since committee hearings to mark up the bill have been canceled three days and counting due to the lack of votes I find it hard to believe they have the votes on the floor.]]

Nor do I. But given Spkr Pelosi’s assertions to the contrary…

She’s this divorced from reality and she’s second in line for the Presidency?!!?

OMG, we have a president who prays. All the time!!! He’s letting his decisions be directed by some superstitious western-biased American theology and doesn’t have the intelligence to make his own decisions without…

oh, I misread… you wrote “Obama” not “Bush.” That’s different. Sorry.

Thogwummpy, you can’t make the distinction between what happens while dealing with bar patrons and what happened to Professor Gates? Do you really think that people with any sense would entrust their ID and a credit card to the safekeeping of a bartender and the barbacks that run around behind the bar? R U Serious?

“There are three sides to this story, Gates’ version, Crawley’s version and, the real truth. ”

Not necessarily. You are assuming BOTH of them are not telling the truth, when in reality ONE of them might be.

considering that the mayor is transgenger, I don’t think that he/she applies as a Democratic Woman. nice try, though.

but, talk about lame, his/her excuse: “Rasmussen argues the city dress code does not apply to him since he is transgender and not entirely a male or female.”

I mean. come ON. a little common sense, please!!!

Here’s your specific example, Paul.

“Professor Gates was driven to his home by a driver for a local car company. Professor Gates attempted to enter his front door, but the door was damaged. Professor Gates then entered his rear door with his key, turned off his alarm, and again attempted to open the front door. With the help of his driver they were able to force the front door open, and then the driver carried Professor Gates’s luggage into his home.

Professor Gates immediately called the Harvard Real Estate office to report the damage to his door and requested that it be repaired immediately. As he was talking to the Harvard Real Estate office on his portable phone in his house, he observed a uniformed officer on his front porch. When Professor Gates opened the door, the officer immediately asked him to step outside. Professor Gates remained inside his home and asked the officer why he was there.

The officer indicated that he was responding to a 911 call about a breaking and entering in progress at this address. Professor Gates informed the officer that he lived there and was a faculty member at Harvard University. The officer then asked Professor Gates whether he could prove that he lived there and taught at Harvard.

Professor Gates said that he could, and turned to walk into his kitchen, where he had left his wallet. The officer followed him. Professor Gates handed both his Harvard University identification and his valid Massachusetts driver’s license to the officer. Both include Professor Gates’s photograph, and the license includes his address.

Professor Gates then asked the police officer if he would give him his name and his badge number. He made this request several times. The officer did not produce any identification nor did he respond to Professor Gates’s request for this information. After an additional request by Professor Gates for the officer’s name and badge number, the officer then turned and left the kitchen of Professor Gates’s home without ever acknowledging who he was or if there were charges against Professor Gates.

As Professor Gates followed the officer to his own front door, he was astonished to see several police officers gathered on his front porch. Professor Gates asked the officer’s colleagues for his name and badge number. As Professor Gates stepped onto his front porch, the officer who had been inside and who had examined his identification, said to him, “Thank you for accommodating my earlier request,” and then placed Professor Gates under arrest. He was handcuffed on his own front porch.”

Well, he could have been thrown a curve ball. I sure hope you’re wrong, tho. Surely he would have understood this would have legs of its own.

Curve balls don’t happen.

Obama put protective footware upon these legs.

This galvanized his base, and sickened the people who mean nothing to him.

Just look at this post.

Please Read This

“”It is time for Henry Louis Gates and Sergeant James Crowley, and the media that will cover them and feed their causes, to quit the personal posturing, step into each other’s shoes and lead us to a better place. Their respective backgrounds should make them two of the most perfectly suited individuals possible for the task. If Henry Louis Gates and James Crowley are each the men they claim to be, they will start the process together and force the recalcitrant media and public to follow. Are they such men, or just the petty posturers they have each been to date?”"
