Here’s Mike Castle, a Republican congressman from Delaware, trying to deal with the birther nonsense at a town hall meeting back on June 30. It really gets a little spooky when the woman hijacks the meeting with an impromptu demand for the Pledge of Allegiance. It’s hard to imagine a more vivid example of how easily false patriotism can trump reason and common sense.
Apparently, CNN’s Lou Dobbs — always on the lookout these days for a fringe issue to ride — is also jumping on the bandwagon.

My father was in the service and we moved around a lot. My parents lost my original certificate of live birth a long time ago during one of our moves. I also have an original copy of the short form. That make me less of an American? According to many of these idiots on the right-wing, yes. Ask them to show you the law that states that the short firm isn’t enough? There isn’t any. Copyleft, there were different birth certificates issued in Hawaii at the time he was born “there”. Some were issued to people who were actually born in Hawaii, and a different one was issued to people who may have been born elsewhere, but applied for a birth certificate in Hawaii. From all understanding, the only thing he has produced is verification from Hawaii that he has a Hawaii issued birth certificate and has not divulged which variety was issued.
I suspect you already know this, however, and just don’t want to discuss the real issue here hoping you can make it go away like it hasn’t happened. That would put you in the same category with Jay on the intellectual honesty scale….at the bottom.
Why not just show the birth certificate and end all the scandal? If you have the ability to prove all the “birthers” idiots, why don’t you? Who in their right mind would endure the level of nuisance this has risen to, along with the money being spent, when the solution is so simple as showing the document? And the political slam dunk would be incredibly damaging to the Rush/Hannity crowd at the same time.
Yet the scandal continues…. Why?

I always refrain from calling anyone an “idiot” or from using other derogatory terms on the blogs and comment pages. But this issue sorely tests my limits. Do these people not know that a certified birth certificate from the State of Hawaii was produced during the campaign last year to put to rest these wild allegations? Will they not believe it until each person has a chance to hold it and examine it personally? Do they not know that the Honolulu newspaper archives hold birth announcements showing the birth of a baby boy to Barack Obama’s parents in Hawaii? Do they not know that attending medical staff have recollected his birth?
Continuing to say “there’s no evidence” when presented with the evidence is – if not stupidity – then lunacy. And the lunacy among conservatives these days seems to be very widespread.
“Hiding his birth certificate”, RB??? What are you talking about? Obama has not gone through much effort to hide something that was made public last year. Maybe you should “go to the effort” of getting the facts instead of just going along with the angry yammering mob that your party is becoming. You can help your party bring a little common sense to the table by manning up and saying, “OK, time to move on with some real issues.”

Hack, the only think Obama has produced is Hawaii saying they issued him a birth certificate. If he had produced one showing he was born in X hospital, this issue would be closed. And showing it to Rahm Emanual and Rammi saying “case closed” doesn’t cut it. Heck show it to Rush himself and embarrass the entire Rush/Hannity crowd and laugh all the way through the next election. You’re right, byte, I don’t trust Obama on this issue and I don’t have anything more than what everyone else has.
Several of you have raised valid issues; lost original birth certificates, adoption, etc., but you all know that’s not what this discussion is about. Obama has never said he lost his birth certificate, the hospital lost my records and here’s the only copy I have, I was adopted and was actually the son of KKK Byrd and his maid, nothing. He just keeps hiding whatever document it is he has. If there is ANY valid reason why he should not show it to someone who can end this discussion forever, please do share it. BTW, I would be more than satisfied if he did that and was legitimate. I just don’t understand why anyone would hide something so simple if they had nothing to hide.

As far as the subpoint mention of the record US fatalities in Afghanistan with the month not nearly over – in the NY Times online, my point was that if this would have been a record month for fatalities in Iraq, it would’ve been banner headline time, not a subpoint.
My memory of such fatality rates in Iran is that they were reported front page, newshour leads, plenty of video and descriptions, war opponent reaction, questions of policy, etc etc etc. Quite unlike the reporting of deaths in Afghanistan.
The Brit death rate has caused an outcry over there, with all sorts of demonstrations and questioning by members of Parliament. Quite unlike here.
No, a second paragraph mention of highest ever is not enough for me.

I’d kinda like a like:like example rather than recalled-from-memory observations. My recollection is that the harsher-sounding headlines about Iraq casualties were seen well after the fall of Baghdad; it was newsworthy because it was unexpected; the mission had been accomplished and peace and democracy were supposed to spread.
I don’t think anyone’s terribly surprised that a major military offensive has produced fatalities. Also believe that at month’s end, you’ll see an accounting of the human toll, as well we should see it.

Obama’s birth certificate has been made available; you can see it online. The seal is there. It IS a legal birth certificate.

I was sitting in the doctor’s office this morning, waiting to be called back. This little boy comes in with grandma and grandpa and he picks up a book and wants to read it. I noticed he picked up a copy of the New Testament. He asked his grandma to read it with him and she said she didn’t want to (she had a woman magazine and really didn’t notice what he had picked up because she didn’t look up from the magazine). So the little boy flips through the book for a minute and then looks at me and says, “You know? I really just don’t get this book!” After choking back laughter, I told him, “Ya know little dude, nobody gets that book.” I passed him a Highlights and told him he’d probably enjoy that book alot more.

US deaths hit their highs several years after the fall of Baghdad. The drumbeat of reporting was constant. Just review the headlines of the wire services, not to mention the papers or the tv news reporting.
Question to other readers: does anyone here recall that when US deaths in Iraq hit all-time highs, was it a footnote or a major story? Would a death toll the highest in years have been relegated to a footnote?

That’s right, HOSPITAL PROVIDED BIRTH CERTIFICATES. Again, this doesn’t matter, because the birthers have already made up their minds, and aren’t interested in considering information that pokes holes in their conspiracies.

And NOBODY other than terrorists was cheering US soldiers’ deaths. A lot of democrats “used” it to prove their political point- that Iraq was a huge mistake and was horribly mismanaged. But NOBODY cheered it.
Seems to me a lot of republicans are hoping Obama screws up, whereas most democrats were hoping Bush would STOP screwing up.
That’s a big part of why young people and those not under the daily influence of Rush Limbaugh despise the GOP. Paul, you realize Iraq and Afghanistan are two different countries, right? You realize one could support the war in A-stan (seeing as they harbored Bin Laden- the guy responsible for 9/11) and not the war in Iraq (country that was no threat to us and wouldn’t sell us oil), right?
It IS telling, however, that less people are protesting the war in Iraq under Obama. That IS a valid criticism and I think it shows that a lot of the protesters were just anti-Bush.
But the fact that the media and the people don’t give the justified war in A-Stan the same treatment as the unjustified fiasco in Iraq doesn’t prove anything to me.

But as far as the justified war in Afghanistan, here’s my take:
al Qaeda (bin Laden’s group) was given safe haven by, and was intertwined with, the government of Afghanistan (Taliban).
We were attacked by AQ, not the Taliban.
We attacked Afg and its government when they refused to hand over bin Laden.
We destroyed the gov’t of Afghanistan, sent the Taliban and AQ running.
(I’m still waiting for those who define ‘legal’ wars by citing UN provisions for proportionality, etc, to weigh in with how Afg is a just and legal war. You out there, CopyLeft?).
But… but… rather than walk away, we stayed. Impose our cultural values, democratic ideals, all that stuff. Pres Obama expanded the war (he was counseled not to by his VP and SecState).
So….

2) I would have more respect for the fringe right if they put as much effort into ensuring that I – as a Georgia native and an adoptee – have the right to my original birth certificate. I can only be given an amended birth certificate. I am entitled to know my origins.
3) Healthcare reform is overdue in this country.
4) Why should I believe the politicians on the right who claim health care reform will cripple the US? These are the same politicians who claimed years ago that a) “managed healthcare” would give us better care and lower costs and b) deregulation of fill-in-the-blank would give us more choice and lower costs. We didn’t squash Al-Qaeda or the Taliban in Afghanistan. That’s why we’ve got this major offensive going on- the theatre was basically ignored and undermanned for years while we dicked around in Iraq, and the Taliban restructured and retook power.
As for Iraq and oil, I don’t think it was ALL about oil, but the facts are hard to deny: Before the war, Iraq forbade American oil companies from doing business and in fact sold most of its leases to China. Right now, Iraq is in the top 5 countries we import oil from and American and British oil companies have the leases.
And please don’t give me the standard defense of “well where is the oil then? why are gas prices so high?” First of all, gas and oil are two separate commodities. This theory also rides on the FALSE assumption that the government gives a half-crap about you or what you pay for gas. Their allegiance is to the super-corporations that bribe them and will pay them $250,000 a pop to give “speeches” to their executives after they leave office.

If oil was our objective (even though we could buy all we wanted, prices were low) and we wanted to take over a country, Iraq was a pretty dumb move for several reasons. Venezuela would’ve been a much better target. IF we wanted to take over a country solely for their oil.

OBL was on the radio in Tora Bora, pleading for the fighters //and their wives and kids// to sacrifice themselves so they could escape. They fled to Pakistan. The gov’t of Afghanistan was destroyed and we installed a new one.
Now AQ’s base is Pakistan but their ability to launch worldwide efforts is not nearly what it was after 9-11. The Taliban is reconstituting as a tribal-based force – but not as the gov’t.
I’m not sure what it means to assert ‘we neglected Afghanistan.’ What are our objectives now vs when we went in? As I said, the mission’s morphed and Pres Obama’s expanded it. Do we want to keep AQ from attacking our homeland again? Keep the Taliban from taking over the gov’t again (what’s the problem with that, as long as they go back to what they were doing before they harbored AQ?).
Or do we simply want to stay embroiled in a hearts and minds contest while killing as many of them as we can?
See, if this’d been Bush as Pres doing this, I’d wager there would have been plenty of QUESTIONS about the wisdom and efficacy of it all.

It’s beautiful thing. It would be hard to invent an issue that so well flushes out the wingnuts.
It’s not quite correct to say it hurts any kind of rational conservatism. That is alas rare these days. The birthers aren’t and never will be that. The prevalence of wingnuts and the dearth of rational conservatives is a serious problem for the GOP. But I don’t know that it is anything the GOP can easily correct. There’s a sense in which the political parties have to take current political demographics as they are. Even if the wingnuts left the GOP en masse to found their Christian Right American Party, that would leave the GOP so small as to risk its continued existence. Rational conservatives don’t have a political home because they are relatively few. That’s not something that can be corrected by combating one particular piece of nuttery.

People just need to get over this birth certificate thing. I have four children. The first three are close in age so I didn’t request birth certificates for any of them until the third one was about 11 mos. When I got them, they were a “Certification of Live Birth” and not the actual long form people are speaking of. Four years later, when my youngest child was also 11 mos, the state of Georgia sent me the long form called a “Certificate of Live Birth.” I have no idea why I got the short form for the first three and the long form for the fourth. Same state, same hospital, same parents, same house. President Obama has the short form because that is what he was given.

This is very instructive! I’m learning a lot here.
I’ve learned that Barack Obama has produced his actual birth certificate (he hasn’t, he’s produced only a Certification of Live Birth), that the certification of live birth he produced proves he was born in Hawaii (it doesn’t – until 1972 a person born anywhere at all could have gotten a COLB) that medical staff has come forward to say he was born “there” (which hospital? Which person?) and that the birth notification proves he was born there (except there is no record of who put it in the paper – maybe just proud grandparents regardless of where he was born – and no one recalls his family ever living at that address, not even the next door neighbor (Beatrice Arakaki) who was there then and still lives there today). I also learned that if you mention any of this you must be a nutcake, a racist or both.
(Frankly, some of the so-called “birthers” are just that — just as some of the detractors will make up “facts” out of thin air to defend Mr. Obama. But the point is that you can doubt the legality of Mr. Obama’s presidency without being either.)
Now for what I haven’t learned. I haven’t learned is why, instead of making a five minute call and paying a few dollars in processing fees to get the “vault copy” of his birth certificate, Mr. Obama has spent a million dollars on lawyers who move heaven and earth to keep it in the vault. I also haven’t learned why his college records, which might show grant money that could only come to an international student, have also been buried. And I haven’t learned which hospital Mr. Obama was born in, since over a period of a couple of months he has claimed it was two different ones (so far).

It seems to me that this sort of thing only benefits the other side. The more conservatives focus on nonsensical speculation, the easier it is for liberals to paint them as nutjobs. There is a segment of the Republican Party that is driving it towards marginalization, a process that began when the religious element overwhelmed much of the party’s platform.
One of the most damaging images to the McCain campaign, from the point of view of an educated person, was that pathetically dumb woman who stood up at one of his rallies and said she didn’t trust Obama because “he’s an Arab.” Though admittedly an awkward moment for McCain, he would earned a lot of credit if he had went further in refuting her, for example, by saying “you are a bigot lady. So what if he were of Arab descent?”
Republicans will maintain that such idiocy is on the fringe of their party, but I’m not so sure. I can recall a conversation I had with some so-called Christians, who, when I voiced my support for McCain in the primary, said: “Don’t vote for him. He isn’t a Christian, they brainwashed him in Vietnam to pretend to be a conservative until he gets elected.” These people were absolutely serious, and otherwise seemingly normal. Where did they get this info? The internet, of course.

It seems you reject the provisions of the U.S. Constitution which specify the Person taking office must be a natural born citizen. His sister born in his step father’s country while he attended school in 1970 has a Hawaiian birth certificate. Atthe time to obtain one in this state was fairly simple. If he wants the issue to go away, all he had to do is show his compete live biirth certificate which includes hospital and docter attended birth. Yet, since 20 January, his campagin fund has spent $733,000 since then on liegal issues in the may finance report. It would also be interresting in what nationality he used for a passport when he visited Partistan when no US citizen could obtain a visa. What about his activities in the Ill state senate? Nothing is available other then in his two autobio he wrote.
Most intelligent individuals would be interested in answers to these questions.

The certificate Obama posted is like a driver’s license or Social Security card. At the time of Obama’s birth, Hawaii issued those certificates of live birth even to baby’s who had come to Hawaii as infants, but were not born there. The real birth certificate would include the name of the physician and the hospital.
Obama has publicly claimed to have been born in two different hospitals in Hawaii.
In Africa it is widely believed, taken for granted by many, that Obama was born in Kenya.
Americans have to present their birth cerificates on all sorts of occasions. It is certainly reasonable to require a candidate for President to do so. John McCain was required to prove his citizenship. Why not Obama?

These people are talking treason and rebellion straight up. If they were Black, or Latino, there would have been calls for their arrest and I’m sure many would have been killed by some “patriot”.
Now we have another phony moniker with these “birthers”. The media allows them to claim their concern is about country therefore the challenge of a birth certificate’s legitimacy. But that is not what this is about now, nor has it ever been. This is about a bunch of racists who “want their country” back from that Black guy in the White House! “My” and “our” is code for white folks, not all who hold some acceptable looking birth certificate. Heck, there are Americans that probably couldn’t produce a birth certificate if you asked them for it. I know for a fact that there are many rural and southern Black people who weren’t born in hospitals and couldn’t produce a certificate “signed by a doctor”, “signed by a hospital administrator”, “with a seal” etc… Yet they were born in this great country just the same and are full citizens. This is all a smokescreen.
Sure these groups overlap, but the point remains. We need to stop with the white privilege and start calling these people who, and what they really, truly, are.

Why in the world would anyone accept a document image on the Internet as proof of anything? I mean, seriously, people. A 9th grader could make that document on photoshop. Is it too much to ask that a document with Constiutional implications actually be revealed to the press so they could show everybody? A real piece of paper? There is a distinct and verifiable difference between a C.O.L.B. (Certificate of Live Birth, and a Certified Birth Certificate (the so called long form version__NOT a super-duper-double-secret-probation-long-form_although you children do come up with some whoppers now and then).
The “COLB” is issued for kids born both foreign and domestically and is NOT a legal form of identification (neither is a newspaper announcement) nor does it display the name of the hospital, the attending doctor, or any signatures.
The “Certified Birth Certificate” (or long form) IS a legal form of identification and displays all of this information. Big difference.
And even a liberal should be able to discern that.

As somebody who recently got my first passport, I didn’t have an orignal birth certificate (I love my parents, but they’re scatterbrained). So guess what what I found out? A copy issued from the State Dept. of Health is just a valid.
Also, show me the 10 Democratic U.S. Representatives that co-sponsored a “9/11 Truther” or “Grassy Knoll” bill because there are 10 Republicans who have co-sponsored the “Birther” bill.

As regards your points (the ones based on what I wrote, rather than what you divined), I don’t know how Barack Obama funded his schooling, nor did I claim to know. But the fact that he is hiding his school records suggests to me, as a matter of common logic, that there is something there he does not want us to see. I am raising the possibility that it might relate to his legal status.
Regarding the birth announcement, neither you nor I know how that announcement found its way into the paper – which is precisely the point I’m making. If it came from a hospital, which hospital did it come from? It certainly doesn’t mention one, does it?
This brings us to another practical consideration. Barack Obama is just 47 years old. That means if the doctor who delivered him was, say, 35 when he was born, he would be just 82 today and certainly might be alive. So might be any number of people there on the day of his birth. A 25 year old nurse would be just 72, a 30 year old food services person would be just 77, an 18 year old candy striper who helped out at the hospital would be just 65. Doesn’t it strike you as odd that not one person has come forth and said “I was there when the President of the United States was born”?
I suppose you could argue that it is unreasonable to expect them to remember an inconsequential birth all those years ago. But let’s remember that Mr. Obama’s mother was an 18 year old caucasian woman with a Black husband many years her senior. Interracial births were extremely rare at that time – and especially in Hawaii which had almost no Black population. Even in the last census (2002) Blacks comprised less than 2% of Hawaii’s total population. So I’m pretty confident it would have been noticed.
If you want to argue on facts, let’s go. If you want to look into a crystal ball and tell me what I’m thinking, try someone else.

Allen – the factcheck.com site goes to great lengths to prove that the COLB was valid. The problem is that a valid COLB does not in any way prove where Barack Obama was born. From 1911 to 1972 a birth certificate could be issued in Hawaii without proof that the child was born there (the Laws of the Territory, Act 96, enacted April 17, 1911). Barack Obama was born in 1961.
Forgetting Factcheck’s ties to Obama (it is run by the Annenberg Foundation, which Barack Obama, along with william ayers, was associated with to disperse grant money over a period of years), even if what they say is true it does not prove a thing about his birth.
Why are you folks so determine to ignore the single most obvious issue, which is that if Barack Obama is legal, all he has to do is request and show the birth certificate?

The point here is that in order for Barack Obama to constitutionally be eligible for the office of President he must fulfill specific citizenship requirements. He has never provided proof that he fulfilled them. And our wonderful “neutral” media have not demanded it from him.
Compare that with the congressional hearings that took place to determine if John McCain, born on US Territory (in the Panama Canal zone) was legally able to be President. They didn’t look the other way for him, did they?
And compare it to the years (literally) of research so many in the media invested to “prove” that George Bush missed a few national guard meetings 35 years before – as if it meant anything about anything.
They would go to the wall for that, but not a peep out of them about the fact that Barack Obama has effectively stonewalled proof of his eligibility to be President.
Then they wonder why people call them biased.

As pointed out before, from 1911 to 1972, a child could receive this “birth certificate regardless of whether there was any proof he was born in Hawaii.

The real question should be why didn’t McCain have to prove he was a real American Citizen? He wasn’t born in the United States, He was born in Japan well his parents where stationed overseas…..so why is his birth certificate excepted as fact? If you’ve ever read the constitution, it states, that in order for someone to become a canidate for the presidency, then they must be NATURAL born citizens (born ON US soil). The birther point about O’s laws being invalid if he is not a US citizen may be incorrect. Much like what happened with George W, once the electorial congress anoints a president, its a done deal, no matter what facts come out. It’s pointless to try to discuss this when no matter how many times you point out that this was not Barack Obama’s birth certificate, they just keep saying it over and over again anyway, like parrots.
What Barack Obama produced for us is a Certification of Live Birth (COLB). Not a birth certificate. There is a birth certificate that is under lock and key in Hawaii. That is the one he has spent untold sums to prevent us from seeing.
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. The straight line issue here is why Mr. Obama will not allow his actual birth certificate to be seen. And no one seems to have an answer to that question, other than snide sarcasms and personal attacks.

Don’t these nuts realize that you can be a U.S. citizen without being born in the U.S.? My oldest son was born in Europe. He is a U.S. citizen because I am a U.S. citizen. Obama’s mother was clearly a U.S. citizen. What would be the benefit of altering his birth place?

Ken- First off, thank you for correcting me. And your right, it wasn’t polite of me to lump all ‘birthers’ into one group. But sadly, all I can see when I hear about this is racism. You guys talk like there is some giant conspiracy going on, when there isn’t, and I can’t get a straight answer from someone on WHY this makes such a big deal to people, other then the fact that he is black, or that he is democrat. So when the majority of the people supporting your group can only give me hateful answer, it gives me the impression that most of you are hate-filled. And believe it or not, we are all racist. We all have preceived notions of what people from other races and cultures are like, and we usually project that onto a person before every getting to know it (you do it, I do it, we all do it).
And you proved my point for me. The same group that had to apporved McCain to run, had to approve Obama as well. Same thing with any other individual who wished to run for president. And as much as it sickens some, he’s the president now. Get over it. He ain’t going anywhere for another three and a half years.

I don’t claim there is a conspiracy, I claim that Barack Obama is moving heaven and earth to prevent us from seeing his actual birth certificate – which he is. Shelby – Barack Obama’s father was not a citizen and – if Barack Obama were born outside the USA (which is the issue here), his mother did not meet the legal requirements for him to be a naturalized citizen. She did not live within the US enough years after her 14th birthday (I’m working from memory here – it had to be either 5 or ten years — not that it would be relevant since she had him at the age of 18)

I’ve given you my theory– he likes watching the GOP acting goofy. It helps him. (And really, is there some kind of super-birth-certificate? My Pennsylvania birth certificate kind of looks like his and I only have one.)
But in all seriousness, it sounds hugely implausible that two local newspapers from the time would announce his birth as in Oahu, unless he was born in Oahu. But, of course, we can’t rule out that he has been raised since birth as a “Manchurian Candidate”.

I never accused you of being anything (after reading my last post, I can see how you got that impression, sorry for that, I really could of phrased it better). The point I was trying to make with that, was that, not one of these official ‘birthers’ can give me a legitament reason for why I should care about this issue at all (other then a political (i.e. he’s a democrat) or racial (i.e. he’s black) reason). I actually respect the fact that you can debate this issue without resorting to name calling or other childish behavior (which is more then I can say for a majority of the poster here–democrat or republican).

Of course, once the real birth certificate is releases there will be “experts” claiming it a forgery, arguing that it was produced by Obama agents and his minions in Hawaii either went along with the fraud or were intimidated by Obama’s thugs into going along. That is way these theories. The woman who spoke in the video above did not question whether Obama was a NBC…she said she knew he was not. Nothing…nothing will convice the birthers otherwise.

tmkls- I agree with you. He could photocopy the back of the certificate, which apparently has the stamp and signature, but he hasn’t and I think that’s on purpose. The louder these “Birthies” shout the better he likes it.
But the bigger problem the party has is that the wacky dittoheads they cultivated for the last 25 years or so have taken over the asylum. They can’t offend this mob because they are now their only reliable voting bloc. Fighting the Dixie Chicks worked for them, this doesn’t. (Incidentally Liz Cheney has come out supporting the “Birthies”! Wow!)

incase anyone is interested in the truth, Hawaii does not issue a certificate of birth for another area of the country as was suggested by a Republican earlier. ALL, as in ALL states only issue reports for their own state. As Hawaii law says “Vital records (birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates) for events that occurred in Hawaii are received and preserved by the Office of Health Status Monitoring, a unit of the Department of Health. In Hawaii, access to vital records is restricted by statute (HRS §338-18).
Certified copies of these records may be issued to authorized individuals and used for such diverse purposes as school entry, passports, Social Security participation, driver’s licenses, employment, sports participation, survivor’s benefits, proof of property rights, and other needs.”

For the record:
Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Lou Dobbs, Liz Cheney, Micheal Savage are pro birthers, although Lou Dobbs position seems to come more from stupidity than conviction. ( BTW, Michael Savage’s website is something to behold. Does he always beg for money so cravenly!?!)
Bill O’Reilly and Michelle Malkin are overt anti-birthers, with unequivocal statements saying so. I suspect Pat Buchanan is also anti-birther but I’m not sure on this.
Glenn Beck seems to be avoiding the issue overtly. His website has pro-birther articles on it, but that doesn’t neccesarily reflect his views.
Laura Ingraham is on vacation this week, but I haven’t heard her say much on this issue. My guess is that she is not a “birther”.

Sorry I didn’t answer this sooner. There’s this little issue of a night’s sleep……
Actually I do know the law. And I quoted it earlier. What YOU don’t know is that from 1911 to 1972 (Law of the Territories, Act 96) a child could be given a valid birth certificate in Hawaii without proof that he/she was born there.
And to the guy who keeps bringing up the birth announcements: What does that prove other than that someone, preumably in the family, wanted to announce the birth. Those announcements do not say where the birth took place, do they?
Trying to reason with people who “know” they’re right is frustrating.
I don’t know for sure where Barack Obama was born. What I do know is that no one else here knows either because he is making dead certain that we don’t get a peek at what would conclusively tell us the answer. And if that doesn’t make you suspicious, I don’t know how to reason with you.

The “frenzy” started at least a half year BEFORE the election. It was mostly ignored by mainstream media then and (though a few venues are very belatedly starting to talk about it) now as well.
And John McCain’s legal eligibility to be President not only was an issue, but generated congressional discussion and the possibility that he would be challenged on that basis – even though both his parents are naturalized citizens and the hospital he was born in was considered to be on U.S. Soil.
What Brian Kilmeade has to do with any of this I don’t know.

In Hawaii, WND was able to locate at the Honolulu public library microfilm of a notice placed in the Sunday Advertiser Aug. 13, 1961. The announcement in the “Births, Marriages, Death” section read: “Mr. and Mrs. Barack H. Obama, 6085 Kalanianaole Hwy., son, Aug. 4.”
Arakaki told Baro’s investigators she had no recollection of Obama being born or of the family living next door having a black child born to a white mother.
Baro sent a team of investigators to Honolulu to explore records regarding current residents of Kalanianaole Highway and to track down residents back to 1961.
Baro’s investigators were unable to locate any current or past resident of Kalanianaole Highway who could recall Obama or his family living at the address listed in the Sunday Advertiser announcement.

-Barack Obama has provided no proof of his birth, because the Certification of Live Birth does not prove a thing. It could have been issued to a child not born in Hawaii.
-Since you either did not see or just ignored the last time I posted this, I’ll do it again and use a different source (is google good enough for you?). The law enabling a COLB to be issued in this manner was in force from 1911 to 1972 (not 1961 to 1972 (I’ll assume that was a typo on your part). Besides, the benefits of US citizenship were – and still are – dramatically greater than almost anywhere else in the world, thus worth taking a risk to provide them to the newborn child).
-Why not look at Anne Dunham’s passport records? That’s a great question. I would LOVE to see them, because those records could shed light on whether or not Mr. Obama could have been born in Hawaii. Are they available? No. And who do you think is withholding them from public scrutiny? In this case, you’ve made my point for me.
-Finally, here is the law governing naturalized citizenship when one parent is an alien. It was in effect from “December 24, 1952, to November 13, 1986 (Mr. Obama was born in 1961): He would have had to be born to two U.S. citizen parents – or, if one parent was a US citizen, that parent would have had to reside in the United States for at least 10 years, and at least 5 years after the age of 14 — which would have been impossible for Anne Dunham, since she was only 18 when Barack Obama was born.

FYI, there is more than Act 96 involved here (I couldn’t remember the other source, so I didn’t mention it until now. It took a little googling, but I got it):
[§338-17.8] Certificates for children born out of State.
(a) Upon application of an adult or the legal parents of a minor child, the director of health shall issue a birth certificate for such adult or minor, provided that proof has been submitted to the director of health that the legal parents of such individual while living without the Territory or State of Hawaii had declared the Territory or State of Hawaii as their legal residence for at least one year immediately preceding the birth or adoption of such child.
Please note that Barack Obama would not – repeat, not – have had to be born in Hawaii for the birth certificate to be issued. As with the other evidence, this means that the Certification of Live Birth offers is completely meaningless to whether Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii.

1. It is not a birth certificate it is a certification of live birth. They are not the same. The COLB does not prove Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii. I have shown this over and over and over again.
2. I am not challenging the COLB’s legality, I am pointing out that it does not prove he is a naturalized citizen.

But what you are suggesting is that Obama ran for President knowing he was not eligible and hoped that he could keep the birth certificate locked away — i.e., that no one would leak it or that there was no other copy floating around somewhere (e.g., in his passport application). He had to assume or hope that his opponents in the primaries would not dig it up and that his opponent in the general election would not. Whatever you may think of Obama, he his not stupid. I have not followed this all too closely — I have a job and family to occupy most of my time. But as I understand it, the question is whether Obama meets the standard of being a “natural born citizen.” The difficulty is the Constitution itself does not define what a nbc is. There is no legislation passed by Congress that clearly defines it. And the Supreme Court has never provided a definitive definition. One needs to tease it out of various regulations, common law and some related but not clearly defintive court decisions. Even if this matter made it to SCOTUS, it would almost certainly rule it a nonjusticable political question to be settled by the other branches (as it often does on war powers issues).

So the issue of whether Mr. Obama is a citizen rests on whether or not he was born in Hawaii. If he was, there is no issue and he is a naturalized citizen. If he wasn’t, there is no issue, he is not a naturalized citizen.

If Obama’s father were a citizen, it would mean that both parents are citizens and would end the issue right there. The fact that he was not a citizen makes Obama’s citizen status subject to the rules governing one-parent citizens I just put up a few minutes ago. and for the 2 birth certificates – I have 2 after having to send of to my State of birth for a certified/stamped/sealed one to get a passport and car tag. After standing in very long gov’t run lines, they would not accept my “certificate of live birth”.

How about this. In order to obtain a U.S. Passport, one needs provide one of the following:
1. Previously issued, undamaged U.S. Passport
2. Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state*
3. Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
4. Naturalization Certificate
5. Certificate of Citizenship
Since I assume Obama has a passport, he needed to provide one of these to get it. I used my birth certificate, as I assume most people do. Anyone know what Obama used to get his passport?

It doesn’t say anything about that “five years rule” it says that she had to have been a citizen AND physically present in the US for at least one year and since his mother was 18 when he was born….well……you do the math!!!
Basically it says IF Obama was born out of the country and his mother was a US citizen, then HE IS A US Citizen. But that’s beside the point because Obama was born in the US!!!!

I think that the same people screaming that he’s not a citizen would be the same people that would want the constitution changed for the Cheney Bush Regime to get a third or fourth term!!! What is wrong with this logic:
1. To get a passport, one needs to prove citizenship.
2. Since Obama’s father was not a citizen at Obama’s birth, Obama could only be a citizen if he was born in the U.S..
3. Obama was granted a U.S. Passport (long ago).
4. Therefore, he has already proven to our government’s satisfaction that he was born in the U.S. (since that is the only way he could be a citizen).

Incidentally, has Mr. Obama madfe his passport available for perusal? The answer to that is “no” as well.
We can’t see his birth certificate, only a “Certification of Live Birth” which does not prove his citizenship status. We can’t see his college records. We can’t see his passport.
You would think there has to be some point at which even a skeptic sits back and says “Why is all this being hidden? Why would he prolong this controversy which doesn’t do him any good, if all he has to do is make documents available that say nothing other than what he has told us”? What is on those documents that would cause him to withhold them?”
For some folks that point will never come. They’re satisfied to pump out personal insults and assorted other invective – and occasionally speeches about racism, which have exactly nothing to do with the issue of Barack Obama’s citizenship status, but are a dodge to deflect the discussion away from it.
For others, however, I get the sense that they are getting past the reflexive attack-responses and wondering why he is hiding this information. One recent convert is Lynn Samuels, a hard-left radio show personality, who is now calling Obama “a liar” about his citizenship status.

WND’s investigator is Jorge Baros, “the in-house senior investigator for Elite Legal Services, LLC, in Royal Palm Beach, Fla.” Interestingly, he appears to be a director of something called the Association of Christian Investigators. Baro also has apparent ties to a group called Godly Men of Integrity, a Georgia-based men’s ministry born out of the Promise Keepers.
It’s clear that Baro lacks a notable piece of integrity, because he buys into false right-wing conspiracy theories about the birth certificate:
“This raised the question in my mind as to whether the ‘Certification of Live Birth,’ which is the only document that has been produced and as previously stated solely handled by the representatives of factcheck.org outside Obama’s campaign, is a certification of a live birth or a late birth,” Baro stated in his affidavit.
“I am left with the conclusion that a simple request from Senator Barack Obama to produce the ‘long form’ (redacted if necessary) would end any speculation or question as to his birthplace,” Baro’s affidavit continued. “His continued denial to do so is suspect, in my professional opinion.”
Baro also pointed out that factcheck.org is funded by the Annenberg Foundation, which “is at the center of the ongoing Obama-Bill Ayers controversy – hardly an unbiased source for information in my view.”
Neither Corsi nor Baro make mention of the fact that Walter Annenberg, whose money supported the foundation, was a prominent Republican )as we’ve noted). If Corsi and Baro want a less “unbiased source” for this claim, how about … WorldNetDaily?
A separate WND investigation into Obama’s birth certificate utilizing forgery experts also found the document to be authentic. The investigation also revealed methods used by some of the bloggers to determine the document was fake involved forgeries, in that a few bloggers added text and images to the certificate scan that weren’t originally there.
Baro’s an private investigator, and he couldn’t find this? Maybe WND’s paying him to hush it up. That might explain why WND won’t talk about now.
Will WND disclose to its readers how much it’s paying Baro for such paltry results? If Baro is accepting money to further WND’s increasingly dishonest anti-Obama jihad, he can’t be much of a “Christian investigator,” can he?
P.S. If WND is so eager to hire private eyes to gather negative information on those who it perceives as its enemies — Corsi wrote that “Baro sent a team of investigators to Honolulu” — isn’t that unseemly for an alleged news organization? And does that mean that we’re next?

And I acknowledge that his CURRENT passport probably would not yield any decisive information about citizenship status, other than that he is a citizen per se (not how/when/under what circumstances).

But only “natural born” citizens are eligible, not “naturalized” citizens — Kissinger is a naturalized citizen but is ineligible to be President. Since there is no record of Obama having gone through a naturalization process to become a citizen, the only way he can be a citizen (which he had to prove to get a Passport) is to be a natural born citizen — i.e., born in the U.S. to at least one U.S. citizen parent.

If, in fact, candidates were vetted and if the state Attorneys General even minimally verified credentials, how was it possible for Calero to appear on the same ballot as Obama and McCain? Obviously not all candidates are vetted, but are any vetted? Why would you wait until someone was president elect to vet him or her and raise the ire of those who elected him or her? Can you actually show a working mechanism that challenges the candidate’s credentials – emphasis on “working”? If not, why the outcry over legislation that does put a mechanism in place. This legitimacy issue should never have happened and certainly should never happen again in the future.

With one exception the comments that Ken Berwitz has made (and I have read) are accurate. McCain’s parents were not “naturalized” citizens they were in fact US citizens from birth. They were not foreign born; therefore, they did not require the naturalization process to become citizens. Both McCains’s father and grandfather were US Navy admirals.

Simply put, I’m a normal person of reasonable intelligence. When this issue first arose, last year, it seemed plausible that there could have been an issue about his citizenship since his father wasn’t a US citizen. But the birth certificate was posted by his campaign, and PLEASE KEN I think it’s a REAL birth certificate and I don’t care about your “live birth” argument, that settled it for me. It seems a little far fetched that a major presidential candidate for the most powerful country on earth would be able to successfully pass off a forged birth certificate. No? McCain accepted it, I accepted it.
Every piece of evidence since then confirms him to me as a citizen. The Haawiaan Official confirmed it, the Governor confirms it, the fact his birth announcement was in two local papers confirms it, factcheck.org confirms it, snopes confirms it. The only people who don’t confirm are wacky right wing web sites, and propeller heads like yourself.

Yes, he would’ve been born with dual citizenship however at the age of 21 Kenyan law states that he had could not hold dual citizenship. So, at 21 he had the choice to denounce his American Citizenship (which he did not do), to become a Kenyan citizen. Therefore, from 21 to present he is NOT a citizen of Kenya. Kenya was freed from British Rule in 1963.

Most references say that Obama’s parents were married, but you are right about the possibility that they weren’t. We haven’t actually seen those documents. If his father was a bigamist, who knows where that puts the marriage status, but I will stay with the “in wedlock” provision.
Again I agree with the dual citizenship issue, but that is even more clouded by the issue of Indonesian citizenship. I’ll accept that he probably is a US citizen, but we’ve never seen those documents either. Which is the point that a lot of us are making; too much is placed on word, supposition, and innuendo, and too little on documented fact.
The real essence is how “natural born” is legally accepted. John Jay was specific “Permit me to hint, whether it would be wise and seasonable to provide a strong check to the admission of Foreigners into the administration of our national Government; and to declare expressly that the Commander in Chief of the American army shall not be given to nor devolve on, any but a natural born Citizen.” (born was underlined). Which is the reason the term was inserted in the Constitution. “Natural born” is not defined there, but based on British law (the legal foundations that most knew at the time) the term referred to a child born of British subjects (plural meaning both). That’s why many claim “natural born” children have to be born of parents who are both citizens. The real question is how you interpret terms in the Constitution – according to the definition and usage of the time or current definition and usage. It would seem perverse to change the meaning of the Constitution based on current usage rather than original intent – such as “natural born” for “natural birth” vs Cesarean delivery. We could change the Constitution any time without dealing with those nasty amendment procedures by just reinterpreting the words. The issue needs to be investigated and resolved – not trashed on the altar of “standing”; that is the cowardly path the courts have taken. If no one has “standing” then no one has legal rights to challenge a perceived wrong. And some cases were rejected well before the elections.

Who is a natural-born citizen? Who, in other words, is a citizen at birth, such that that person can be a President someday?
The 14th Amendment defines citizenship this way: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” But even this does not get specific enough. As usual, the Constitution provides the framework for the law, but it is the law that fills in the gaps.
Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in those gaps. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are “citizens of the United States at birth:”

I’m back at my computer and I just saw the last two comments from Clark (who stayed up until 3AM eastern time, long after I was asleep, to post them).
Since they are loaded with insults and invective, and they make assumptions about me (party affiliation, what I think of the health care issue) that he doesn’t know a thing about, I won’t respond to them.
If he, or anyone else, wants a discussion of facts, I have no problem with that. But insults and assumptions (wrong, by the way: I’ve never registered with either party and vote for both Democrats and Republicans) are useless.

Incidentally, for anyone here who cares, I don’t know about this “birther” thing. I’m someone with an opinion on an issue. I don’t belong to a group or cult or anything associated with this or any other issue.
It is a hallmark of people who don’t have very much intelligent to say, that they try to “classify” people into groups that they can then demonize. It’s a lot easier than trying to discuss facts.

I thought about this overnight and have reached the following argument. Anyone want to tell me what its weak link is?
Here is my argument:
1. We know that Obama has a valid US Passport — he travelled abroad as an adult to countries where he would not have been admitted without one.
2. To obtain as Passport one must provide documentation that one is a citizen. So we know that Obama has proven to the satisfaction of the US government that he is a citizen.
3. Of course, this is not enough to be eligible to be president. There are two types of citizens — natural born (a citizen at birth) and naturalized (became a citizen after birth through a legal process of naturalization). Only natural born citizens can be president (e.g., Kissinger could not).
4. If one is a naturalized citizen there is a record of the application for citizenship and the process of naturalization. To date, no one has provided a single shred of evidence that Obama ever went through a process of naturalization, and there would be evidence.
5. If there is no evidence of a naturalization process and Obama has proven citizenship (which we know because he has a passport), the only option is that he or his mother provided the State Department with the necessary documentation to prove he was a natural born citizen.
The only alternatives to this are:
1. He did go through a naturalization process but no one has found any evidence of it yet.
2. The State Dept screwed up and gave him a passport by mistake.
3. Obama or his mother gave the State Dept forged documents to aquire his passport.

tmkls – it would not surprise me if the Certification of Live Birth was enough to generate a passport. That said, however, I don’t know for sure what the answer is.
But it still – and always – begs the question of why he will not make his actual birth certificate available. If it says what he claims it says, why in the world would this be any problem at all? Is there some secret about which hospital he was born in or what the doctor’s name is?
Common sense – not adherence to any group or philosophy, just plain common sense – tells me that if the birth certificate was what he claims, he’d have done so long ago, and the only reason he has not is that it isn’t what he claims.

But then that means that the U.S. government accepts a certificate of live birth as sufficient evidence of citizenship. Someone has told me, however, the a CLB is not accepted by the State Dept, only a “certified birth certificate” (though I have not been able to verify this). If a CLB is not accepted, then other sufficient documentation must have been provided.

You’re saying that Obama’s mama gave birth to him in Kenya, then went to Hawaii and pretended that his birth happened there. The problem that you have is not whether his mother was an American, she was, but that he, meaning baby Obama, was not born on American soil. So this is a soil problem. You’re absolutely right, Clark. Homer Simpson would have probably put up a better defense, although in all fairness, HS is more of a staunch populist. At this point, the birther movement has run it’s course, and it’s proponents will be remembered as the reactionary wing-nuts that they are. Especially the nativist nut-job woman at the town hall meeting. I think that come 2012, minorities particularly are going to remember her and what she represents.
