Here’s Mike Castle, a Republican congressman from Delaware, trying to deal with the birther nonsense at a town hall meeting back on June 30. It really gets a little spooky when the woman hijacks the meeting with an impromptu demand for the Pledge of Allegiance. It’s hard to imagine a more vivid example of how easily false patriotism can trump reason and common sense.
Apparently, CNN’s Lou Dobbs — always on the lookout these days for a fringe issue to ride — is also jumping on the bandwagon.

my point was that if this would have been a record month for fatalities in Iraq, it would’ve been banner headline time, not a subpoint.
I’d kinda like a like:like example rather than recalled-from-memory observations. My recollection is that the harsher-sounding headlines about Iraq casualties were seen well after the fall of Baghdad; it was newsworthy because it was unexpected; the mission had been accomplished and peace and democracy were supposed to spread.
I don’t think anyone’s terribly surprised that a major military offensive has produced fatalities. Also believe that at month’s end, you’ll see an accounting of the human toll, as well we should see it.

Doug- Obama has satisfied EVERY qualification written in the Constitution to be POTUS. He HAS produced a birth certificate. You can see it online and even zoom in on the seal. They did this a long time ago.
What you are insinuating is a grand conspiracy of both political parties and each one’s opponents, the state of Hawaii, various courts and judges, the State Department, and the Secret Service. Honestly, it ranks a little less believable than 9/11 conspiracy theories.
You really think McCain’s people didn’t check this rumor out? Or Hillary’s people for that matter?

Finn, seriously? google MIHOP and LIHOP.
in a nutshell, you have the crazier MIHOP (Made It Happen on Purpose) guys who think the WTC was either a controlled demolition and the Pentagon was a cruise missle; and the somewhat less-crazy LIHOP (Let it Happen on Purpose) folk think Team Bush, or some cabal, were well aware that OBL and crew were planning the attack but let it happen because of the opportunities to suppress civil liberties and secure power.
Neither side gets much support from mainstream left wing blogs; MIHOPpers, who are the more authentic analog to the Birthers, are generally shunned, as well they should be.

That has to be about the most dishonest thing posted here in quite some time. You know darn well your lib friends almost cheered every time a soldier died, especially when it was near a milestone number, because it gave them yet another reason to bash Bush and blame him personally for each and every death. The way you’ve discounted this death toll after the way your crowd bashed Bush for it is disgraceful.

War is hell, if we are allowed to win, Hell is thrown at the enemy until his society is tired of dying and gives up completely. Like Japan, like Germany. After that we got weak. Korea, not allowed to win. Viet Nam not allowed to win. Gulf War I not allowed to finish the job. To fight in Afganistan may mean crossing lots of borders in pursuit and killing lots and lots of civilians. That is the cost of war.

Obama’s birth certificate has been made available; you can see it online. The seal is there. It IS a legal birth certificate.
None of that matters to the deranged birthers, of course. They’d prefer to claim that Obama’s birth certificate really isn’t a birth certificate, and that there’s a magical “REAL birth-certificate out there somewhere” so they can whine and moan about why Obama has refused to produce it.

I have to share this off-topic funny story:
I was sitting in the doctor’s office this morning, waiting to be called back. This little boy comes in with grandma and grandpa and he picks up a book and wants to read it. I noticed he picked up a copy of the New Testament. He asked his grandma to read it with him and she said she didn’t want to (she had a woman magazine and really didn’t notice what he had picked up because she didn’t look up from the magazine). So the little boy flips through the book for a minute and then looks at me and says, “You know? I really just don’t get this book!” After choking back laughter, I told him, “Ya know little dude, nobody gets that book.” I passed him a Highlights and told him he’d probably enjoy that book alot more.

US deaths hit their highs several years after the fall of Baghdad. The drumbeat of reporting was constant. Just review the headlines of the wire services, not to mention the papers or the tv news reporting.
Question to other readers: does anyone here recall that when US deaths in Iraq hit all-time highs, was it a footnote or a major story? Would a death toll the highest in years have been relegated to a footnote?
[[I don’t think anyone’s terribly surprised that a major military offensive has produced fatalities. Also believe that at month’s end, you’ll see an accounting of the human toll, as well we should see it.]]
Again, we had offensives in Iraq. Was that used as a mitigating factor, then? We sure didn’t have to wait until the end of the month for an accounting! Heck, we even had people here posting the results every day!
I do not know for sure what your position was, at the time, on the Iraq war, so this isn’t directed at you:
I’m amazed that the people who protested the death rate so loudly during Iraq are so… apathetic? silent? on the topic when the deaths occur under Pres Obama in Afghanistan.

1. It’s fascinating to see the birthers simultaneously arguing that Obama was born in Kenya, but even if he was born in Hawaii, that he’s still ineligible (despite the 14th Amendment’s clear definition of citizenship).
2. Oh, yeah. There were contemporary newspaper birth announcements. Where did they get the info from you ask? Vital statistics. Where did vital statistics get their info from you ask? That’s right, HOSPITAL PROVIDED BIRTH CERTIFICATES. Again, this doesn’t matter, because the birthers have already made up their minds, and aren’t interested in considering information that pokes holes in their conspiracies.
3. At this point, no matter what Obama says, the birthers will scream “conspiracy”. It’s best for him to ignore them.
4. If Obama had been white, do you really think WND would be whipping this up?

And NOBODY other than terrorists was cheering US soldiers’ deaths. A lot of democrats “used” it to prove their political point- that Iraq was a huge mistake and was horribly mismanaged. But NOBODY cheered it.
Seems to me a lot of republicans are hoping Obama screws up, whereas most democrats were hoping Bush would STOP screwing up.
That’s a big part of why young people and those not under the daily influence of Rush Limbaugh despise the GOP. Believe it or not, even the poor “government-educated” young people can sniff out dishonest BS, like the whole “if you don’t support Bush’s invasion of Iraq, then you don’t support the troops, and you’re not a patriot”. No, my memory is sharp as can be, and it includes the kind of nasty accusations such as you’ve leveled at me, that we celebrated troop deaths in Iraq. That talking point got a lot of play as Bush’s numbers headed permanently south and Republicans desperately clung to straws for something, anything they could hurl at those who dared to challenge the wisdom of Bush’s Iraq invasion and occupation.
I’m simply calling you out, and telling you you’re full of s–t. I have friends and colleagues who are either over there or who have family who are, or were. That I would suffer fools like you gladly, who think I celebrate our soldiers’ deaths, or tolerate any such celebration, is simply a non-starter.
So put up or shut up. Tell me who among my “lib friends” celebrated in such a fashion. Or maybe try thinking for yourself instead of allowing some right wing idiot to do it for you.

Paul, you realize Iraq and Afghanistan are two different countries, right? You realize one could support the war in A-stan (seeing as they harbored Bin Laden- the guy responsible for 9/11) and not the war in Iraq (country that was no threat to us and wouldn’t sell us oil), right?
It IS telling, however, that less people are protesting the war in Iraq under Obama. That IS a valid criticism and I think it shows that a lot of the protesters were just anti-Bush.
But the fact that the media and the people don’t give the justified war in A-Stan the same treatment as the unjustified fiasco in Iraq doesn’t prove anything to me.

Yeah, I realize Iraq and Afghanistan are two different countries. The spelling difference was my first clue.
You’re not making the case the Iraq war was about oil, are you? Please, no….
Your second paragraph – seems to me a valid point.
But as far as the justified war in Afghanistan, here’s my take:
al Qaeda (bin Laden’s group) was given safe haven by, and was intertwined with, the government of Afghanistan (Taliban).
We were attacked by AQ, not the Taliban.
We attacked Afg and its government when they refused to hand over bin Laden.
We destroyed the gov’t of Afghanistan, sent the Taliban and AQ running.
(I’m still waiting for those who define ‘legal’ wars by citing UN provisions for proportionality, etc, to weigh in with how Afg is a just and legal war. You out there, CopyLeft?).
But… but… rather than walk away, we stayed. Impose our cultural values, democratic ideals, all that stuff. Pres Obama expanded the war (he was counseled not to by his VP and SecState).
So….
isn’t it possible to make the case that the //initial// invasion was justified, but…
the morphing of goals and their achievement through military means means we are essentially in a new war, or phase of war, and THAT justification is questionable?

We didn’t squash Al-Qaeda or the Taliban in Afghanistan. That’s why we’ve got this major offensive going on- the theatre was basically ignored and undermanned for years while we dicked around in Iraq, and the Taliban restructured and retook power.
As for Iraq and oil, I don’t think it was ALL about oil, but the facts are hard to deny: Before the war, Iraq forbade American oil companies from doing business and in fact sold most of its leases to China. Right now, Iraq is in the top 5 countries we import oil from and American and British oil companies have the leases.
And please don’t give me the standard defense of “well where is the oil then? why are gas prices so high?” First of all, gas and oil are two separate commodities. This theory also rides on the FALSE assumption that the government gives a half-crap about you or what you pay for gas. Their allegiance is to the super-corporations that bribe them and will pay them $250,000 a pop to give “speeches” to their executives after they leave office.

Somewhere in Second Peter, when asked when will Christ return,
he said “to G-d, a day is like a thousand years”. Now my question would be if it’s true for the end of time, why wouldn’t it be true for the beginning? What I’m saying is they just don’t get it.
an aside, on the fouth day, G-d said let there be light. “Now duty electrician, lay to the quarterdeck”…
dontcha think the CIA has dug into this?

I mean really – CIA, Cheney, Hillary, Bill, Bush, Rove, McCain… dontcha think that these guys dug into this issue BEFORE the election?
Really now – I cannot see that these political machines, with access to the CIA, would’ve let this escape them as Obama took the lead in the polls.
c’mon people

Copywrong doesn’t work, has never been on a date with a member of a sex he likes (he sounds gay, but I don’t want to presume or judge), lives in his mom’s basement and didn’t register to vote. He gets emails from the DNC every morning then put his silly sacrosant twist to it then annoys bloggers from here to San Francisco. Most of you liberal types I respect, not so Copywrong. He’s an idiot!

The stats say there are 2.1 billion christians.
If I could just get each of them to send me 1 US dollar, God said he will spare my life.
Now, my gentle flock, I must appease to your kinder nature so that I might be able to continue serving you and the Lord. Just send your check (and yes, it can be for more than $1 if you so choose) to the address below:

Lovely Liz are you suggesting the the Democrats that ran the South after reconstruction treated the former slaves better than the CSA? Had Lincoln lived it may have been different, but all the Civil War did was move former slaves from slavery to poverty.

but the tally was brought forth daily to support the left’s anti-war movement. Would you accept the word “exploit”.
By some? Sure! You’re going to get bozos and jerks in any movement, including the anti-war left.
RB was posting as if my support of such bozo-osity was something that was so forthright, it was still ringing in his ears, and if that were the case he’d surely have cites at the ready.

You see folks, we could only bitch and moan about the war while Bush was in office knowing full well he had no plans (no concept…the thought never even entered his mind) of ever leaving.
We won the election and our Kenyan (hehehe, rub yer noses in the salt) is in the White House sooooo now our concern shifts to how best to extract us from that stupid undertaking by doing the least harm to the rest of the civilian population of Iraq than we have already done.

If oil was our objective (even though we could buy all we wanted, prices were low) and we wanted to take over a country, Iraq was a pretty dumb move for several reasons. Venezuela would’ve been a much better target. IF we wanted to take over a country solely for their oil.
We didn’t quash them?
OBL was on the radio in Tora Bora, pleading for the fighters //and their wives and kids// to sacrifice themselves so they could escape. They fled to Pakistan. The gov’t of Afghanistan was destroyed and we installed a new one.
Now AQ’s base is Pakistan but their ability to launch worldwide efforts is not nearly what it was after 9-11. The Taliban is reconstituting as a tribal-based force – but not as the gov’t.
I’m not sure what it means to assert ‘we neglected Afghanistan.’ What are our objectives now vs when we went in? As I said, the mission’s morphed and Pres Obama’s expanded it. Do we want to keep AQ from attacking our homeland again? Keep the Taliban from taking over the gov’t again (what’s the problem with that, as long as they go back to what they were doing before they harbored AQ?).
Or do we simply want to stay embroiled in a hearts and minds contest while killing as many of them as we can?
See, if this’d been Bush as Pres doing this, I’d wager there would have been plenty of QUESTIONS about the wisdom and efficacy of it all.
