A little bittersweet travelin’ music tonight
A friend of mine by the name of Paul Hemphill, a tall, lanky guy from Alabama, died last weekend after a bout with cancer.
Paul was a very good writer, and an even better person. I don’t have any adventures with Paul to recount, although others do, because by the time I got to know him, most of his adventuring days were behind him. But he was a kind, straight-talking man of great wisdom, wit and humility. That ain’t half bad.
After leaving the newspaper business, Paul took up honest work as an author, and he was damn good at it. One of my favorites was “Lovesick Blues: The Life of Hank Williams,” a gently told tale about another lanky kid from Alabama. It’s a damn fine piece of work. I read it a few years back when I was on a reporting trip along the Gulf Coast during and after Hurricane Rita.
At night I’d read Paul — sometimes by the little domelight in my car, where I had to sleep because all the hotel rooms were filled with refugees from Katrina and Rita. You can hear Paul’s voice, his cadences and descriptions, as you read it. During the day, as I drove from town to town, I’d listen to Hank singing the songs Paul had written about.
Paul and Hank — not bad company for a business trip.

How strange it feels to have lived long enough to remember the deaths of both Hank Williams and Paul Hemphill. I was a school child, gathered around the family radio listening to WOAY, Oak Hill, West Virginia, and dreading the walk out into that bitter cold and snow to catch the school bus, when the announcement came that Hank Williams had been found dead in that Cadillac near the town. He was on his way to a gig in Ohio. And now his chronicler, Paul Hemphill, is gone.
Both men made remarkable contributions to American culture. May they rest in peace.

Well, Hank Williams was a great singer, ain’t no doubt about that. And Paul Hemphill started off good when he was a kid but went bad on us when he up and went librul. I recall the first time he showed up in the Atlanta paper. I expected a good Conservative Southrener, but I might of knowed they wouldn’t hire no Conservative. Well, he spouted librul junk for a few years and then they said he was going off to Harvard on some kind of grant. They ruint him for good up there.
He was a great writter, only he wrote the wrong kind of stuff. Kind of like a great country singer that decides he’s going to sing opera. I sort of wrote him off but some people said his book about Hank Williams was great. I just don’t see how a fellow like that got enough country singers to talk to him to be able to write a book. Everybody knows most all country folk are Conservative.
Anyhow, I don’t hold no hard feelings toward him and hope he rests in peace. Wherever libruls rest. I hope wherever it is it ain’t too warm for him. And tell the Whiner he ain’t got no heart to be writing junk like that in a blog about the death of a guy. He’s the kind of blogger that would throw the Baby Ruth candy bar in the pool at a swim party. Have a good night everybody.

I recall your reports from the area very well. I questioned at the time and still: What benefit did the people of the area gain by having all those people come there. Not just you but huge numbers of newspapers, TV Networks, TV Cable stations, radio stations, radio networks, support crews, equipment, generators and even Sean Penn.
Did the people of the area, the victims, reap a net benefit from all of you being there; eating the food, using the gas, etc., etc.?
I am not asking you to answer that complicated question. I would ask though: Having been there and having that experience, and assuming it was your decision alone to make; would you make certain that you sent an AJC Editor or reporter to the area devastated by the next hurricane?

JOEY–in reference to your questions of Jay…much of my family is down there. I shudder to think of what would have happened had the press not gone and covered it the way they did. For days on end the only clue we had on what had happened to some of them was from the press coverage. The relief we felt when we saw a street we recognized with friends and family on it, and the houses still standing, or the horror we felt when we read the coverage say, from Pass Christian, and still had not heard from the aunts and uncles there…

Thanks. I agree that some of the news media coverage provided benefit to everyone. And I am not condeming Jay or the AJC here. I know he went there because he believed it would help.
Maybe a way to help next time is for Jay to look in retrospect at his trip. Knowing what he knows, what he learned, and given it is his decision to make, would he make certain that an AJC editor or reporter was on the scene?

Either way, what’s become clear is that the week that was supposed to be the humiliating rout of old white guys in the Senate has turned into the surrender of judicial liberalism. That has become the philosophy no potential justice can admit to, even when her president owns the Senate. Whoever in the administration coached Sotomayor knows this: A conservative Supreme Court is not at odds with America. It is its reflection.
Now that they understand it, people are really starting to hate liberalism.

Well, howwwdeee folks. I see you are knee deep in the country cacophony of certain cappellas. Or should I say…. right up to your chinnychin chins in it? Nevertheless, I am soooo happy that you are HAPPPY and I am happy that I don’t really have to listen and happy that it is Friday and happy the local storm was only ten terminal raindrops and besides that, the happiest moment of all, I got the oil changed in my courtly Cavalier. Speaking of fine fellows, has anyone heard from Bosch? I might have missed it since I have been busier than a beaver in a log jam, a mosquito in a nudist colony, etc. etc. I hope he is OK.
By the way, glancing back I was delighted to see that some of you gentlemen are really interested in birds. Don’t know whether it was red headed woodpeckers or ivory bills or what but ‘peckers were definitely in study. I think Normal said his was on the endangered list. Sad…
Well, let me know about Bosch. I ‘m getting ready for the BRAVES. GO BRAVES!! That Maddux was a great pitcher. Wish we had another one just like him.
