Politics as a rock opera

I don’t mean to ignore you folks, but I’m wrestling with a deadline for tomorrow’s column. So to entertain you in the meantime, I’ll post something I saw first on Andrew Sullivan’s blog at The Atlantic:

Big whoop. How about something more timely, like the price of gas? It rose in price for 54 straight day, a record. And it didn’t slacken until the feds started making noise about investigating traders or putting regulations in place. Now the price has retreated to a level that is consistent with current demand. While it may be true that the President has little control over the price of gasoline (whether he’s a Democrap or a Republicant), it is true that the threat of government heat sends the rats scurrying faster than Rush chasing an ice cream truck. Score one for the government.

Before I click the link, I should probably say up front that Rachel Maddow’s been pushing these Autotune the News bits for some weeks, and I’ve never found them funny before.

But who knows, maybe number 6 is charmed…

Uh, Joe, the price of gas almost always goes down after July 4 holiday as demand no longer keeps up with supply as we get closer to the end summer (and the kiddies go back to school in less than a month!).

As to the song… why didn’t they make Michele Bachmann naked at least? That’s about the only way I’d want to listen to her. Without that, it’s like listening to Palin on mind-altering drugs (her taking the drugs, not me).

Anyway Jay, I’m sure your finished piece will be worth the wait. Thanks for tossing out a new thread, the old one was getting smelly.

Kamchak,

I just had a thought – I know, scary, but, regards to Ralphy Reed 2.0 – he doesn’t seem to understand that he is one of the main reasons that the GOP is so irrelevant these days.

ByteMe

Bosch: he likely knows, but no one else will employ him, so the only thing he has left is his phone list of “true believers” who will swallow anything he says and fork over dough.

The list is a lot shorter these days, so that’s why he has to call it “2.0″.

ByteMe,

This is funny – it’s from the AJC article:

““You have to reinvent it,” Reed said. “It’s the political analog to the iPod and the iPhone. It would be cool. It would be transformative. It would transform our politics and bring younger people to our ranks. All of those are critical imperatives.””

So……you know, you have to be cool and hip and throw out words like iPod and iPhones to get the young ones attention. But then what?

Um, er, did the video ever get funny after the first minute?

I hate to say it, but Bachmann Boehner Overdrive doesn’t need any enhancement to appear completely ridiculous.

(”Run away! Run away! The Census Bureau is coming to COUNT US!!!”)

Speaking of counting, we can always count on Republicans to protect us from imaginary threats. That’s how they kept the country so safe. No invasion by Finland, no attack by the Atomic Mole People, no successful conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

Does anyone remember what the Bush FBI was consumed with in the months prior to 9/11? Strippers! Atlanta’s Gold Club. Heaven only knows how much time, effort and tax dollars were spent keeping drunken NBA stars safe from being overcharged by strippers.

True or false: Dick Cheney spoke the following words:

“The enemy may come individually, or in strength. He may even appear in the form of our own troops. But however we must stop him. We must not allow him to gain entrance to this base. Now, I’m going to give you THREE SIMPLE rules: First, trust NO one, whatever his uniform or rank, unless he is known to you personally; Second, anyone or anything that approaches within 200 yards of the perimeter is to be FIRED UPON; Third, if in doubt, shoot first then ask questions later. I would sooner accept a few casualties through accidents rather losing the entire base and its personnel through carelessness. Any variation of these rules must come from me personally. Any variation on these rules must come from me personally.”

False? Really? You sure?

LIZ CHENEY: “Well, in my view, you know, I think they don’t understand that it’s a war. And you know, they sort of, some of them have started to adopt the language of acknowledging it’s a war because they understand the American people know it’s a war. But fundamentally, deep down, I think they really are uncomfortable with the notion that we have to capture and kill al-Qaeda, that we have to get information, that we can’t win the war without intelligence, that if you just ask terrorists nicely and read them the Miranda rights they’re not going to give you intelligence. They’re uncomfortable with those notions, they’d rather treat this as law enforcement, they’d rather run these guys through the American court system and so I think this is in part an effort to discredit all of those programs that were very effective precisely because they did recognize that we were at war. But I think, you know, we’ve been down this path before and the American people have an awful lot of common sense about this: they know it’s a war. And I do think the Democrats are entering very dangerous territory here of reminding everybody once again why the Republicans do a better job of defending the nation.”

The next time the democrats defend America, it’ll be the first time.

USA Today — WASHINGTON — Most Americans want a big health care bill passed this year, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, but they are less enthusiastic about paying for it.

And while a majority of respondents say controlling costs should be the legislation’s top goal, more than 9 in 10 oppose limits on getting whatever tests or treatments they and their doctor think are necessary.

The findings underscore the difficult path ahead for the White House and Congress as the health care debate enters crunch time. President Obama, who has called for the House and Senate to pass bills within the next few weeks, was meeting Monday afternoon with two key congressional chairmen to try to hammer out financing for the $1 trillion-plus legislation.

“For those naysayers and cynics who think that this is not going to happen, don’t bet against us,” Obama said earlier in the day as he announced the appointment of Regina Benjamin as U.S. surgeon general. “We are going to make this thing happen because the American people desperately need it.”

One advantage for the president: A third of those surveyed say they trust him and congressional Democrats most when it comes to changing health care; 10% choose congressional Republicans. Doctors and hospitals are trusted the most, by 45%. Just 4% choose insurance companies.

One-third.

Whoopteedoo.
