From the Anchorage Daily News:
Gov. Sarah Palin announced today that she will resign in a few weeks. Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will take over at the Governor’s Picnic in Fairbanks on July 26.
“People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing’s more important to me than our beloved Alaska,” Palin said.
“Serving her people is the greatest honor I could imagine.”
Palin made the announcement at a news conference at her home in Wasilla.
“I am determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is not the easiest path,” Palin said.
“Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional ‘Lame Duck’ status in this particular climate would just be another dose of ‘politics as usual,’ something I campaigned against and will always oppose. It is my duty to always protect our great state. With that in mind, my family and I determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things, so that this administration, with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future, can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success.”
As for her future, Palin said: “I look forward to helping others — to fight for our state and our country, and campaign for those who believe in smaller government, free enterprise, strong national security, support for our troops and energy independence.”
The bright lights of the big city are calling. See the related post below.

This should be interesting…
A lot of powerful forces in the GOP openly question Palin’s fitness for office (any office) and consider her selection as McCain’s VP a flop.
How in the world will she be able to shift to the center, not lose the 20-25% ‘conservative’ base AND appeal to people who use logic deciding who to vote for as President?
Palin has a long, tough slog through that minefield.

Good Heaven’s I didn’t read the whole story…she is cutting and running from her current term!!
She’s a quitter…exactly the wrong thing I would think any sane person in her position would do in order to better position herself for the GOP nomination.

I just asked my Magic Eight Ball and it told me that she’ll run for Senator in 2010, then won’t finish out that term to run for President in 2012.
The problem she has is that this bizarre twist will be fodder for any Republican running against her. I feel her political career is over, maybe that’s what she wants.
But then again, Al Franken is a Senator now. I was watching the old movie “Predator” the other night and there was one standing Governor (Arnold) and a former Governor (Jesse Ventura) – stranger things have happened.
But if Palin is the GOP candidate for POTUS in 2012, I take back what I wrote earlier about Obama being a one term President.

Bosch: did your Magic Eight Ball know that she’s about $500K in debt from legal fees for all the ethics investigations that have been going on in the great white north?
She’s either going to hit the talk circuit or she’s going to be a TV talk show host. Nothing else will pay her enough to clear out the debt.

Jay says,
“So why do I bad-mouth Palin?
“Because of cultural issues? No. Because she would make a disastrously bad president of the country I love and admire. Because she doesn’t know a damn thing and believes it doesn’t matter. Because she is so far out of touch and so star-struck by the image in the mirror that she doesn’t even know what she doesn’t know. Because it reflects badly not just on the Republican Party but on the country as a whole that she could even be mentioned as a possible candidate for president.”
Unbelievable that a supporter of Obama, Mr. “Community Organizer,” who never ran anything other than a campaign (if he even did that), would accuse a former mayor and governor of not knowing “a damn thing.”
Jay also says, “Not only can you not sustain a campaign on cliches and platitudes. What on earth happens should you ever actually become president?”
Oh I don’t know, why don’t we ask Mr. “Yes we can!”? You Obama supporters are kidding, right? I, mean the guy was nothing but full of bumper sticker slogans and platitudes and he made all the way to the top!
Given who currently occupies the White House, I suppose we’ll find out soon “what on earth happens” when someone who doesn’t know “a damn thing” becomes president of the United States.

We all know that Sarah Palin does not operate via altruistic navigational charts. Either something’s about to come out that she knows will end her career anyway, or she’s positioning for something else ….. but this seems a peculiar way of doing so. Not surprising for her, but peculiar nonetheless.

Well, here we go again. Democrats will wipe out the Slash & Burn Campaign method on Bush and start lining up the pointless investigations, unprovable accusations, family attacks, manufactured records of every kind, print unattractive pictures, question her patriotism, secure her doctor’s records illegally, check out her parents, make claims of financial indiscretions, question who is the father of her children, and any bunch of hooey they can find.
Sarah Palin will remain looking like a strong ethical woman. Democrats will continue to look like the perpetual political shysters they put on display.

If she so chose, she COULD become THE most dangerous threat to politics as we know it after today.
Where could she wreak the most havoc? Right at the “heart” of the left-wing progressives.
