Over at Andrew Sullivan’s place, a reader asks how Fox News and the conservative right would respond to, say, Barack Obama, treating the American flag as cavalierly as this….
But the even better question is how they would respond if Obama posed with the flag something like this….

I mean, can you imagine? Obama posing with the flag literally wrapped around him? Oh the humanity!

Pres Obama in shorty shorts. Sorry, Jay, but that’s a visual I don’t want.
Always had fun with people who wanted a flag amendment. I’d point out the flags on their bathing suits, beer mugs – heck, I even asked a military guy if he ever tossed his uniform on the floor. He said “well sure” and I pointed to the flag patch on the sleeve. He didn’t much care for the implication.
But, I think we’re gonna hear a whole lot of criticism of Palin by many here – as they drink beer from their mugs and with their bathing suits on with their flag beach towels drying over the back of the chair.
I don’t much care for it, but then again, I can’t think of anything I own that has a flag on it. Except the flag I put on the front porch on appropriate holidays.

In our country you have the right to burn the flag in protest, so she has the right to use it as she wishes too. PS: It kills me to take her side…Just sayin’…

Huh. Just did a search on Palin American flag.
Got the usual fake pics. Then a bunch of articles – does Palin hate the flag? Thought it might link to these pics. Nope – they were letters from outraged Americans because they couldn’t see her lapel pin, she didn’t have a flag in her office and at speaking events she used a black background.
Can’t win for losing, it would seem.

“Is this an appropriate use of our national symbol?”
Why not? It’s not our nation, it’s just a piece of cloth. The flag means nothing if we betray the nation it stands for.
But there is NO doubt in MY mind that if Obama did that, he would be vilified.

I think there is a double standard when it comes to an actual flag versus items with the flag emblem imprinted on them. I have a few t-hirts with flags printed on them, and I do not throw them on the floor. I prefer to see a flag treated with respect, but I can’t control the act of others. Just knowing the blood shed for that flag from the American Revolution, to the Civil War and up to now in Iraq/Afghanistan causes me to treat it with reverence.
As far as the pics, I don’t think she meant any harm or disrespect, so just leave it alone.

Read the quote above about the Constitution. They didn’t shed blood for the flag…even if they say they did. If it wasn’t for the Constituion and our nation, it was shed for nothing.
The flag is a symbol, nothing more, nothing less. Reverence for the flag is pointless if you trample on what it stands for. It’s not a case of “My country (flag) right or wrong”…it’s about the WHOLE quote: “My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.”

“The flag is a symbol”
That is my point exactly. Not everyone can see, touch, smell, and feel the Constitution. However, that flag is a symbol of that (the Constitution) along with all that our country represents. I agree with you that it stands for nothing if you trample the ideals of which it represents, but put that flag on and walk thru a market in Pakistan or Baghdad and see what happens. To some it’s a piece of fabric, to others a symbol, but I believe it’s whatever you want it to represent.
