“Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded. For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply point out that marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation.”

I see that there’s a new reality program where people who have never met are married for the entertainment of the rest of the country. Obviously, these people are honoring the institution of marriage, while loving gays are out to destroy it.

Aside from the hypocrisy on the issue of alleged marital sanctity, how does the fact that marriage “predates” the Constitution serve as an argument on its behalf ? Many institutions and practices that predated the Constitution (titled classes, monarchy, etc) were negated by the document and many institutions and practices that existed at the time of the founding have since been swept aside by Constitutional revision (slavery, male only suffrage, etc). Ensign is not really making an argument; he’s just asserting a crude unthinking bigotry.

My marriage would be between 2 people, and considering marriage by the state is essentially a contract between 2 people, who can decide on things like health care issues, right to die, property inheritance, etc for the other personn there is legal and coomon sense resson you can limit that to just one other person.
That said I am fighting for my right to marry, not the Mormons right to marry 16 times. They have quite a bit of money, let them fight for it themselves.

Obama: More benefits for gay workers only one step
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama signaled to gay-rights activists Wednesday that he’s listening to their desire for greater equality in “a more perfect union.” But he didn’t give them even close to everything they want, bringing to the surface an anger that’s been growing against the president. “We all have to acknowledge this is only one step,” Obama said in the Oval Office, where he signed a memorandum extending some benefits, such as visitation or dependent-care rights, to the same-sex partners of gay federal employees.

getalife – Get some news, the latest of course. He was being blackmailed. As it appears he foiled an extortion scheme by going public with the details.
It really comes as no shock to see the convoluted misinterpretation of what is meant by the term sanctity of the institution. Like the with the institution of Presidency, which I have the utmost respect for the sanctity of that institution regardless of the BUM that disregards the sanctity of that high office they have enjoined themselves to and took an oath to faithfully uphold its’ “values”.
The Institutions of life whatever they might be should retain sanctity no matter how grossly the un-sanctified parties therein that fail to so often live up to the lofty ideal standard demanded. Quite simply, man must always have things that are morally higher, more noble and more potent than his own shortcomings, for that is what makes an institution an institution.
Don’t know quite what to make of Ensign’s inference that gays stop ruining marriage. How can they, gays, ruin what they’ve never had? Marriage is a Heterosexual thing.
However, the gay response heard out from under the bus they had been thrown under by Obumer’s two-stepping shenanigans by meagerly throwing a few benefit scraps in their direction was very understandable.
Too little, too late!

To be honest, I didn’t know anything about this Ensign fella’s infidelity nor do I care.
I did read the thread where the two of you were in a discussion with Paul about DOMA. I’m in agreement with him. If gays don’t feel equal now, a word won’t make much difference.
One of you….can’t remember which, said that you’d be O.K. with it as long as heterosexual couples were restricted to civil unions. Neither my husband nor I have ever worn our wedding rings except for the ceremony of “our union”. When people ask why, my response is “Why would you assume we’re married? Could be we’re living in sin. Could be I’ve gone through the legal process of changing my last name to coincide with his.”
Could be…could be…could be…
After watching attacks that some within the gay community have launched against churches, it makes people like me suspicious that this drive for equality in marriage is to force the issue onto churches. Once that is done, it’s Katie (previous minister’s name) bar the door.
Civil Unions. The majority of Americans and many within the church are all too happy to accomodate. Try it…you may find that it’s all that you thought it wouldn’t be.
Never look a gift horse in the mouth. Ride that steed.

For those who believe as an article of faith that the Holy Scriptures of the Judeo-Christian tradition are the final word on all things social, theological, and political, compliance is a matter of personal which cannot always withstand scrutiny.
Among those of my tradition, there are the 613 laws, commandments or mitzvoth, depending on the terminology. The ultra orthodox who seek to live by them often find that they must all but completely withdraw from the greater society and live in communities where every thought, action and deed is being judged by all about them. For those of whatever faith who insist on being that observant, and I can understand their need to have such clear cut answers to any and all questions, it is best to withdraw.

Whiner I don’t want the Bible applied to my marriage.
Clyde- I understand where you are coming from but at what point do you want to shirk your adult responsibilities and be free from any rules? Would you like to kill a few of your business competitors? Would this make Clyde happy?
Trust me, homey, I don’t think we should be stoning adulterers or homosexuals.
But I also don’t think we should be promoting adultery.
I rule.

Come on josef…
Do images like this promote your cause?
Or this?
What is it with the nekkid body display? Is that all there is to the gay community?
Those images leave little to the imagination.
I’ve always thought that the gay cause would be better received if they’d police their own.

Kamchak–say one thing about marriage and divorce, it sure makes spiltting the blanket easier when it comes to community property! Somebody asked us one time how it was we were able to stay together and the answer was, “would you like to to split up that library?” We both like to read and have a library of some 5000 volumes accumulated over the years. About a third of them are decidedly his, about a third decidedly mine (i.e. determined by taste/interests) and about a third of them would be fought over like the War of the Roses….

I think you’ve been thrown under the bus Josef Nix. If you want to talk about civil rights being violated, don’t ask don’t tell tops the lists of our countries greatest shortcomings. It’s right up there with counting as 4/5 of a person.
Government has NO RIGHT to tell anyone to remain silent about their sexual orientation or punish them for their preference in human sexuality.

Far be it from me to be a scold about this (I’m the one saying DADT needs to be taken out back and shot, remember?), but, from November 4th, 2008…
If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled
… I dunno, maybe I’m just easily wowed, but I remembered hearing that and thinking “wow, gay folks actually getting mentioned by a president in an acceptance speech. About f—ing time.”

Whoop-de-friggin-do. Another politician cheated on his spouse. I could care less. So what, he’s a hypocrite, what else is new? All politicians are hypocrites.
That being said, people need to take the religious argument out of whether or not gays should be allowed to marry. All government sanction marriages are civil unions. If it’s about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, who gives a flying rats @$$ about who marries who? Two men getting married will not end my marriage. Two women getting married will not keep me from getting to heaven (insert any afterlife belief of any religion here). Personally, I think letting anyone get married can’t do any more damage than limiting marriage to heterosexuals has already done.
150 years ago, the bible was used to keep my people in bondage. Was that the best interpretation of the Scriptures? If that were the case, God would have kept us in bondage. People need to quit trying to be god and just be themselves.

RW,
Civil marriage boils down to a legal contract concerning property rights and benefits, and promising them to another person. “Love” means nothing in the eyes of the law.

How about if we just leave them in their mother’s womb, let them grow to be full, fruitful, loving caring adults, like all the rest of us?
