Remind me to laugh.

According to TNGelding "logic", the reason that this President is retreating from his grandiose (and vacant) promises of ethical reform is because of George W Bush. It is the fault of the President who he challenged for the behavior that he, himself, has to continue acting in the same manner.

It's ok TN, you can feel free to acknowledge that he is hypocrite, liar, and thief while being happy that at least he is -your- hypocrite, liar, and thief. I suspect that you can find some solace in the fact that he says what you want to hear even if he behaves in a incongruent manner.

Sorry, but the fact that the -President- is on a rampant course to forget (or ignore) most of what he promised as the -Candidate- should not even be a story. With every promise that becomes a "policy reversal" to effectively a Bush administration argument, the swill and blather that was his campaign becomes ever clearer.

And too many of you are willing to trust your health care to a lying political opportunist like this under the incredulously naive illusion that he (and other nameless, faceless, -unaccountable- bureaucrats) can better provide for and make decisions for you and your family than you can.

For my good friend AmVet, the cultural / political battle is not "center-right vs far, far right". Frankly, a President effectively nationalizing entire industries, rampantly spending and wasting tax dollars (or acquiring debt at a historic pace), and seeking to take control our very access to health care has, with all due respect, not seen the "center" of any political philosophy in years. He is a collectivist grouned in the philosophy that it is acceptable to take under threat of injury (aka steal) that which is earned by producers and achievers to fund transfer payments and services to those who did not. He does it for the express purpose to acquire power and authority from those who benefit from his actions.

Frankly, AmVet, the political battle is between those who support freedom and opportunity versus those who support security and dependence. Personally, I side with those who support achievement and excellence recognizing that as the best way to continue America's growth and advancement. I support the idea that everyone should earn and produce for themselves; not that some self-appointed overseer should divide and share what some earn with those who choose not to.

That is the American political struggle and I know where I stand in the challenge.

AmVet, Maher's original rant on his show is worth reading:

<i>...speaking of the Republicans, if you can't shove some real reform down their throats now, then when? Folks, Barack Obama needs to start putting it on the line in fights against the banks, the energy companies and the health care industry.</i>

<i>I never thought I'd say this, but actually, what he needs in his personality is a little George Bush. He needs to stop worrying about being loved and bring out that smug, insufferable swagger that says, "Suck on it, America."</i>

<i>George Bush had horrible ideas—torture, deregulation, preemptive war, tax cuts for the rich—but he pushed them through in their full measure, never mind the Congress or the Constitution, the Geneva Convention — Magna Carta—Hammurabi's Code. The point is, he didn't care if it made him unpopular with every human on the planet not named Cletus or Fred Barnes. Which it did.</i>

<i>And what we need to do is to marry the good ideas that Barack Obama has, with a little bit of the Bush attitude and certitude. I'd love it if Obama came out one day and said, "Jesus told me to fix health care."</i>

Peabody, the previous gang implemented a de facto shadow government, one even more paranoid that Nixon's.

Throw in a US Congress that is getting more and more and more spineless in it's outright abdication of doing its job, serving the people and acting as a check and balance on the imperial presidents, and yeah, a whole lotta people get nervous...

Yes it is hypocrisy. The importance of the public having access to this information primarily revolves around be able to track the players regarding specific legislation and policy directives. It is pretty clear now why Dick Cheney didn't want the light of day shined on his energy task force. Only some creative snooping uncovered that the Cheney task force had requested maps from the National Archives showing existing oil leases in Iraq way before 9/11. Imagine how different things could be today if the public had that nugget of information during the runup to the invasion of Iraq. No government agency nor official should be allowed to work in absolute secrecy. Obama needs to change course immediately. Why I ask, should someone like, let's say, the Pope be on record as having visited the POTUS or whomever, but let's say a guy like Ken Lay gets secrecy? We all know why and we should all demand that this type secrecy end. The only way the American people win is when big money interest groups, individuals, lobbyists, and others of that ilk are forced to do their wheeling and dealing right out in front of the entire nation. How else will we ever hold any government official accountable when they can operate in total secrecy?
