Just who IS this Obama guy anyway?

To some people, Barack Obama is just a hard guy to figure out. He won’t fit easily in the usual mental pigeon holes, and that gets frustrating. Just this week, Rush Limbaugh referred to the president as “a half-black, half-white human being with no experience running anything of substance.”

I have no idea what made that “half-black, half-white” thing relevent. But apparently it’s an important observation, at least in Rush’s World.

Then there’s the matter of Obama’s religion. Over at Politico, they noted that “Barack Obama invokes Jesus more than George W. Bush.”

“In his speech Thursday in Cairo, Obama told the crowd that he is a Christian and mentioned the Islamic story of Isra, in which Moses, Jesus and Mohammed joined in prayer.

At the University of Notre Dame on May 17, Obama talked about the good works he’d seen done by Christian community groups in Chicago. “I found myself drawn — not just to work with the church but to be in the church,” Obama said. “It was through this service that I was brought to Christ.”

And a month before that, Obama mentioned Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount at Georgetown University to make the case for his economic policies. Obama retold the story of two men, one who built his house on a pile of sand and the other who built his on a rock: “We cannot rebuild this economy on the same pile of sand,” Obama said. “We must build our house upon a rock.”

But in the Washington Times, the increasingly loony Frank Gaffney insists that appearances not withstanding, Obama is actually … well, why not let Frank explain it to you:

“…. there is mounting evidence that the president not only identifies with Muslims, but actually may still be one himself. Consider the following indicators:

• Mr. Obama referred four times in his speech to “the Holy Koran.” Non-Muslims — even pandering ones — generally don’t use that Islamic formulation.

• Mr. Obama established his firsthand knowledge of Islam (albeit without mentioning his reported upbringing in the faith) with the statement, “I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed.” Again, “revealed” is a depiction Muslims use to reflect their conviction that the Koran is the word of God, as dictated to Muhammad.

• Then the president made a statement no believing Christian — certainly not one versed, as he professes to be, in the ways of Islam — would ever make. In the context of what he euphemistically called the “situation between Israelis, Palestinians and Arabs,” Mr. Obama said he looked forward to the day “. . . when Jerusalem is a secure and lasting home for Jews and Christians and Muslims, and a place for all of the children of Abraham to mingle peacefully together as in the story of Isra, when Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them) joined in prayer.”

…. In the final analysis, it may be beside the point whether Mr. Obama actually is a Muslim. In the Speech and elsewhere, he has aligned himself with adherents to what authoritative Islam calls Shariah — notably, the dangerous global movement known as the Muslim Brotherhood … “

half and half
So, to review:

Half black, half white. Half Christian, half Muslim. Half American, half Other….

Why, he’s President Half and Half! Pour him in your morning coffee and — voila! — suddenly it’s a little lighter in color, and a little less bitter on the taste buds.

And you know, maybe that’s the problem: I suspect that some folks prefer to swallow their bitterness straight up, no chaser. They prefer to see the world in stark black and white, with no shades of subtle gray.

And certainly no shades of mocha.

To me, it’s a life and death bill,” Graham said, after confirming that a filibuster is on the table. He said the White House has not only been supportive, but hands-on in the crafting of the FOIA exemption. “They had us write the language,” he said. “They’ve been very, very helpful.”

So, for Frank Gaffney, being able to talk to Muslims by using some “Muslim sounding phrases” makes him a Muslim?

1) You can talk to Muslims and learn quite quickly that when they say “Mohammed” they the immediate qualifier “peace be upon him”, so it sounds like Mohammed peasbeponnim.

2) Saying that using a story from the Koran makes him Muslim is. . . well. . . incorrect. I can see Obama having a few people helping with this part of the speech.

3) Saying “Holy Koran” helps Obama speak to his intended audience. Again, this does not make him Muslim. It merely indicates he has been educated in certain areas that many in the US have not.

4) I feel that an Imam trying talk to a Christian audience may well try to learn a few things that merge Christianity and Islam, you know, to find COMMON GROUND.

And common ground is the beginning of the peace process. (So says the guy on Star Trek, the Next Generation, who was unable to speak on his own)

Hmmm. Jay’s thread hits on points that address liberal and conservative misconceptions. And the comments address the conservative misconceptions.

I noted during the primary and in the first little bit after January, when people would write about Pres Bush’s Christianity, as well as others’, and they would go on and on about it…

that Obama spoke the same language at least as often as Bush did.

No acknowledgment from the Left on that point.

Still isn’t. But I’ll bet someone on the Left will say, “That’s ’cause Pres Obama is a REAL Christian!”

The Gaffney piece? When are these guys going to figure out Pres Obama was not addressing a US audience? Ever have a politician come to your neck of the woods? What do the invariably say? Something about the region or culture, or anything, that says “Hey, I know about you. I understand. I connect!”

So Pres Obama used language his audience would appreciate. Well, DUUHHHH!

By Gaffney’s standards, next time a politician goes to, say, Boston or Chicago or maybe even Notre Dame, he should not ‘pander’ and lead off with “that guy in the Vatican who thinks he heads the same church he alleges existed since the time of that carpenter dude…”

I double dang guarantee he’ll get their votes!

And yes, North Korea has brunted all of our attempts at negotiation, just ask Madeline Albright and Jimmy Carter. But I would argue the taking of Americans as hostage, combined with the blatant disregard of the international community regarding nuke and missile tests, I would argue that this is a level of aggression we haven’t seen since the end of the war.
. Now, I know the president is busy apologizing for every real and perceived slight America has ever done to the Arab world. But perhaps he could, you know, postpone that for a trip to Beijing to get the Chinese on board with stopping their neighbors. And maybe get some of our European and Asian allies to push North Korea. It does answer my question. Chris, for G-d’s sake, I was just wondering! I am not of the Obama is a Muslim crowd. I am painfully aware that he is a practicing Christian (Prop 8, and sorry DB and @@ but it IS germane here). My reason for asking was simply that we don’t know how lucky we are to live in a society which does not practice this. When the deportations in France hit the Jews, most of the native French Jews were able to escape because their documents did not register by religion, When the deportations hit Hungary where Jews were living largely unmolested and going about their business as enfranchised citizens, the nazis were able to do their dirt in three months time because the Hungarians did register by religion.

The second point I was aiming for is that under the strictest interpretation of Sharia, one is required to kill the apostate and, were he registered as a Muslim in a Muslim society, this would make him a target of the fundamentalists.

Don’t be so knee-jerk. Like you, I am alarmed by those who would call him a Muslim and, even if he were, find that to be something to be in a dither about.

Being a member of that cabal, I assume this is in sarcastic jest, and if so, I second it!

All righty then. A bit of discussion on the Muslim angle (Doggone/GA, what do you want to be when you get reincarnated? :-) ) I even learned Pres Bush is Muslim, too.

But what I haven’t seen are any of the people who are:

1. Pres Obama true believers, who

2. Regularly ridiculed Christian evangelicals

address why Pres Obama is exempt from the scorn.

Well President Bush said these things, which prove he is a Muslim, right. Read what Bush himself said.

“The Islam that we know is a faith devoted to the worship of one God, as revealed through The Holy Qur’an. It teaches the value and the importance of charity, mercy, and peace.” (November 15, 2001)

“[I know] that the Muslim faith is based upon peace and love and compassion.” (September 28, 2001)

“The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That’s not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don’t represent peace. They represent evil and war.” (September 17, 2001 )

PAUL–why is he exempt? Because H-’s perfect. G-d in the flesh. Saviour of mankind. And, no, y’all I never said Ob-ma thought that, I’m just saying H-s followers of the cult of personality (Peron anyone? “Santa, Santa Evita…”) are certainly making the point FOR H-m whether H- wants it or not.

DANNY X–yes, he did say that. He did an awful lot to forego an anti-Muslim backlash at a crucial time (No Manzanar, folks) and is why my Bengali neighbor down the way voted for him.

Somehow, I don’t think he wants it. One can have an honest assessment of one’s superior abilities yet still have a very humble attitude.

Having a President with brains is pretty cool :)

Is their a wealthy bunch of libs someplace who are bankrolling Rush, or what? And have they also propped back up Simple Sarah? And kept alive the Muslim debate? The socialist debate?

To those on the right who spent last winter to drunk to watch TV:

You said the same crap back in the fall and got your backsides handed to you. Draw some new cards.

You visit foreign countries at your own peril. Especially unstable ones with deranged dictators. Don’t expect the threat of war to try to get you released if you are detained.

Plenty of proof Bush is a Muslim

Walked hand and hand with that Saudi prince in that strict Muslim country

Led a war against the infidel Sadam in Iraq which will now be run by Muslims.

And the statement Bush made.”The Islam that we know is a faith devoted to the worship of one God, as revealed through The Holy Qur’an. It teaches the value and the importance of charity, mercy, and peace.” Disgusting!!!!

He quoted the Qur’an. He said HOLY Qur’an. Bush hates Jesus.

josef nix June 9th, 2009 6:01 pm SAID:

It does answer my question. Chris, for G-d’s sake, I was just wondering! I am not of the Obama is a Muslim crowd. I am painfully aware that he is a practicing Christian (Prop 8, and sorry DB and @@ but it IS germane here). My reason for asking was simply that we don’t know how lucky we are to live in a society which does not practice this………………….

The second point I was aiming for is that under the strictest interpretation of Sharia, one is required to kill the apostate and, were he registered as a Muslim in a Muslim society, this would make him a target of the fundamentalists.

Don’t be so knee-jerk. Like you, I am alarmed by those who would call him a Muslim and, even if he were, find that to be something to be in a dither about……………..

CHRIS SAYS: Sorry, I didn’t get the irony. :-) Actually, there is no danger of his being accused of apostasy since (according to Shariah) you have to willingly and without duress, admit to having being a Muslim in the first place. Obama never admitted to that so the charge of apostasy doesn’t exist. Even his father, though born Muslim, was a self admitted atheist.

Josef, as an MOT whose mom and grandparents fled Germany, I can assure you it is in jest.

One of the regular trolls here thinks I’m an anti-Semite though!

I laugh when I think that it was not very long ago at all, and especially here in the deep south, that sentiment I made fun of was very much alive and well.

Between us and Those People, the good old boys had their hands full.

Nothing much has changed down here from what I can see – just the faces.

Now it’s the Mexicalis and the Sandies that they loathe overtly…

CHRIS–Thank you for being a gentleman. I must admit the irony was not clear, but I wanted to see the reaction…viva la reaccion! The hair splitting on the Shariah is of interest to me, coming as I do from a long, long line of rabbis! That was also why I was wondering if he had been registered as a non-believer which my Indonesian informant say is an option under Indonesian civil registry of population, in which case we could call H-m a non believer…continuing with the hair splitting and just playing devil’s advocate, was H-s school in Indonesia secular or Islamic? If the latter, would not H- have recited the prayer, “there is but one G-d, All-h and Mohmmad is H-s prophet…” Would that have been willing and without duress…? Just wondering… :-)

Did anyone notice that Hannity edited part of Obama’s speech in Cairo to make the claim that he wanted to give supporters of 9/11 a “voice”? LOL…..you know desperation when they resort to tactics like that.

On another note, our Right-Wing extremists and Muslim extremists have a lot in common. Obama’s message of tolerance and understanding is poison to both of them. They both believe that the other is going to hell. They both want this to become a war of civilizations. And they both consider Obama to be a “Wise Enemy” (a comment reportedly thrown around by extremist Islamic blogs). Next thing, they’ll probably join forces in the “common cause”.
