Prayer is done by all religions so its not a question whos a Christian but who prays to whatever God we believe in. America is founded by freedom...freedom of speech and religion. There all all kinds of days, holiday, months that are dedicated to honor. To honor black history, Martin Luther Kings birthday, several holidays to honor our soldiers and the freedoms we have for the men who faught for our nation, Thanksgiving a holiday to celebrate what each person may or may not be thankful for in our life and Christmas. It does seem like the Christian Holidays or things associated with Christianity is controversial. Not all Christians are good and not all Christians are bad but they are just people that are forgiven that just love God. I am a Christian and I love Jewish, Muslim, Gay people, Buddist and whatever other religion/race or choice someone makes in life who is it for me to judge im just an unperfect person who is forgiven daily by God. If you want to pray or dont want to that is up to that individual person but if i accept you for who you are and im not trying to stop what you believe in please dont judge me or stop me from a day of prayer or Celebrating my fathers birthday or death and resurrection. I think sometimes some people are just mean and want to fight and judge. Just love and accept and if you dont like it pray or choose not to be around it.

Praying is not religion. Prayer is talking to God. Our founding fathers did pray and gave thanks and were in public office. President John Adams called for a day of fasting and prayer because the U.S. came close to having a war with France. Ben Franklin updated the Lord's Prayer, which is the good news versions of the Lord's Prayer. Franklin is the one that asked to start each day of the Constitutional Convention with prayer because there were difficult times and other issues. Day of prayer is also honoring and bringing people together to pray for our country. It is a reminder that we need each other and God.

Really, what America do you live in? No one is incarcerated for not participating in the National Day of Prayer, but geesh don't flash your ignorance--your slip is showing! Since 1775 this great nation's leaders have invoked national prayer. Our Congress issues a prayer every time it opens session. Separation of church and state means that no official punitive religion will be the basis of this great(or once great, the system still rocks, it's servants maybe a little questionable) governmental system. Why prayer? Because it works. There is a great God who rules over us all. Otherwise, our laws and Constitution are meaningless. Or were we all supposed to bow to the almighty Darwin. Not.We as a nation have been greatly "blessed". Was the Civil Rights Movement pretend? Did those seeking basic civil liberties not rely heavily on the Lord? The answer is "yes", in case you were confused. Then why shouldn't our government. If I'm wrong, why ask about hell-stop bothering to celebrate Thanksgiving. Who are you thanking? We celebrate Thanksgiving as a National Holiday for a reason. Some of you are a little to scared of the "G-O-D" concept. What's even scarier is --He's real.

Wow, I have never seen so many people line up to rebutt the idea that the USA may be a christian nation. It is just a nation with christians is what many are saying. I suppose when the nation came together as one nation, and one voice to weep and pray for the fallen and for their surviving family members on 9/11 many of you were somewhere crying that you were offended because you were being forced to pray. Go figure!

Jay, what is the "Scripture in Matthew that advocates private rather than public prayer, because those who pray in public are generally hypocrites trying to advertise their piety for secular gain"? Why so vague?

Last night Rachel Maddow did a segment on this issue. Her guest was Rev. C. Welton Gaddy, who I thought brilliantly exposed the hypocritical political agenda of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. Take a look:
