pat,

I don't know why but, for some strange reason that I just refuse to put my finger on, 'looking like an idiot' in your eyes just does not seem to bother me. In fact, I seem to derive some strange comfort from just knowing how you 'feel' about me. Hmmmm.

jt,

enter the following ¥ and leave a space on each side and hopefully you'll get ¥

Not uncommon. There would really be no war on terror if it had not been for more than fifty years of foreign policy in the middle east of backing up extremely brutal dictators because America's policy was one of keeping our access to oil secure with dictators rather than support democratic reforms in middle eastern nations. Though I dont support Ron Paul's political libertarianism, he was the only person with the balls to call it the way it is. Its easier to suggest that the people of other nations are somehow demons andf fanatics, when in fact, their reaction is not all that different from the Americans who started the American Revolution and those who supported it using methods like "tarring and feathering" Torries who didnt want to separate from England who made up almost more than half of all citizens in the colonies. Two thirds of the colonists were either Torries or didnt care one way of the other about separating from Britain, or were not convinced of the argument of those who wanted independence. Basically the American Revolutionaries were a minority who wanted something that two out of every three of their neighbors didnt want, or didnt care about at all:

The Revolutionary War was an astounding occurrence in a world sill dominated by kings. It established the first important republic since Rome in the middle of what at the time was a wilderness far from Europe. It was a war that the British could have easily avoided had King George and his advisors been willing to show the least flexibility. Many in Britain objected to the War and a minority of Americans wanted independence at the time the war began.

http://histclo.com/Country/us/hist/19/1812/1812-treaty.html

Tarring and fathering SOUNDS quite innocuous, but in fact, most of its victims died within days of it being applied, as a result of third degree burns over their entire bodies and the infection which followed from having the feathers stuck to it with the very hot tar.

For decades, the citizens of countries like Egypt, Iran and Iraq all beleived the hype about democracy, and would ask themselves "When will America come and help us fight our terrible rulers" and got a very rude awakening when they discovered that America was backing those rulers to guarantee access to both petroleum and the sea routes by which it gets back here. When they realized that it was America that was backing their own brutal governments, they decided to go back to their own Islamic roots rather than follow the western model of government.

These people started kicking themselves for actually beleiving that America stood for democracy OUTSIDE of America. We did. Sometimes. When it was convenient.

Democracies are not reliable things. People can vote to take over their own national resources rather than let American corporations run them and make money off them. So when the choice was other people's democracies or two cars for every American and cheap gasoline to run them, guess what America's policies were.

The conservative idea is that other people should just forget about it. No need to apologize.

After World War II, many nations decided they wanted the "free determination" that was promised and was American policy at the end of that war. Depending on the economic interests of the big businesses of the United States, some were allowed to have it, and others were not, and we installed various dictators who we were certain would look after the business of America rather than their own peoples. I will not even bring up the instance of the Anglo/British overthrow of the democratically elected government of Iran, resulting in an additional 25 years of the Shah's very brutal rule. Without that, there never would have been an Iranian Islamic revolution. The person elected was an Oxford Educated Economist. next of course there is Arbenz in Guatemala. When he was elected, he tweaked the nose of United Fruit, who had a good thing going by having labor that was almost enslaved, the U.S. sent in the Marines to overthrow that government. Of course then there is the American cancellation of free elections in Vietnam in 1956, because our own intellence indicated that if there were free elections, Ho Chi Minh would win in the North AND the South with 80 percent of the vote. That is in Eisenhower's own biography, because he was proud of preventing a communist from being elected in a FREE election, because American policy asserted that no one would ever ELECT a communist government. And then of course the overthrow of the elected Allende in Chile. Americans have this odd idea that the people of other nations should simply FORGET the grief our policies have cause them.

Jay, I appreciate your willingness to criticize the memos and the people who wrote them, but I urge you to please advocate for accountability. Your twisting of Naomi Wolf's words is disappointing. Nothing she said suggested against accountability. She's simply saying that we all have blood on our hands.

To AmVet: you said
"Or we can take matters into our own hands, reform the system, and reclaim our rights to legislate. It is in our name, after all – “we the people”—that the powers of the constitution itself are delegated."

That is the problem with progressive liberals! Reform the system! How about returning to strict interpretation of the constitution and stop adding and bench making laws that were never intended to exist in the first place.

How different would this world be if Clinton had not allowed Bin Laden to be released? Some of you keep raving about the last eight years of Bush but simply forget the ineptness of Clinton and his administration to protect America. Clinton did not fail just on 9/11 but in Somalia also.

You liberals are so funny with your selective memories, biased medias, and blame America mores. Enjoy your rule and watch America die.

There. That's clearly the highest level of communication your little brain can cope with. Have fun with it.
